Thoughtful Thursdays: Do you take the opportunity to reinvent yourself whenever possible?

Do you take every opportunity to reinvent yourself as a leader? On this week's #ThoughtfulThursdays episode, Lorenzo discussed the importance of resetting your leadership when you change teams.Buy Lorenzo's leadership book here:Vision, Clarity, Support: A Leadership Crash Course on the 3 Pillars of Success#Leadership #HackingYourLeadership #StarkEngagementConsulting #[email protected]@starkengagement.comHacking Your Leadership WebsiteHacking Your Leadership InstagramLeadership Memes TwitterStark Engagement ConsultingLife Of LozoHey everyone this is Lorenzo from hacking your leadership and welcome to another thoughtful Thursday episode! Happy New Year and thanks for listening to the first episode of the 2020.We have some new concepts and more content coming out this year and Chris and I wanted to thank you for all of the feedback, questions and support during 2019.I know we ask every Thursday, but your reviews and subscriptions to the podcast really help us quite a bit, so if you didn’t get a chance to write a review or click the subscribe button last year or you just started checking out our show, please take a second to review us or subscribe right now while your listening to this episode! Thanks in advance! On this episode, I want to talk about reinvention. As leaders we typically get a chance to reinvent ourselves or at least hit a little reset button when we get promoted or even just move or transfer to a new team. When done correctly, we consider what things we want to be known for and what things we want to leave behind. Many times, just joining a new team allows us to shake some of the old bad decisions we made or strained relationships we caused. Chris and I spent time talking about our Culture Acronym in a previous series and the first letter of the acronym is the letter C standing for Consider yourself and it really is about thinking about how you want to show up for your team to increase overall Culture. As a leader joining a new team, one of the things you really want to consider is that first impression and how you spend your first few weeks engaging with and getting to know the people you work with. This is critical to quickly building equity in the relationships that lead to trust and alignment.Recently, I’ve been investing time speaking with leaders that have joined new teams, leaders that are returning to previous teams they have worked with and leaders that are new to role and are no responsible for the teams they may have recently been a part of. I’m a firm believer that promoting someone and moving them to a new team at the same time is really best for all parties involved, it doesn’t always work out that way, but it is extremely difficult to get that reset or reinvention with people who are already very familiar with you and may struggle with seeing you in a different role, especially if that role is directly leading them. In my career, I’ve experienced both scenarios and I can testify that my greatest growth through reinvention happened when I changed teams. Something to be very conscious of though is that you have to be authentically you. I’ve seen leaders take the opportunity to change teams and get a promotion and then attempt to show up as someone that they are not, usually its a role where they are the sole person responsible for the team or business unit and they may attempt to hide any vulnerabilities or over index in false confidence to divert from the fact that they really don’t know what they are doing. So in conclusion, when you or one of the people you lead gets a chance to reinvent or reset, take the time to plan. Contemplate and Discuss how to show up and what people should takeaway from initial interactions and conversations.Look at every one of these opportunities as a chance to realign values, sharpen skills and eliminate distractions. Thanks for listening, happy new year and talk to you all next time!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/hacking-your-leadership-podcast--4805674/support.

Thoughtful Thursdays: Do you have any Leadership resolutions for 2020?

Have you considered making any Leadership resolutions for 2020? Should you?. Hacking Your Leadership continues to grow because of listeners like you and we so greatly appreciate when you not only subscribe, download and listen to the show but when you take the time to share with your friends, family and followers. As we wrap up 2019, I wanted to talk about goals for the New Year and/or resolutions that you may have. According to the internet, A New Year's resolution is a tradition, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life. I always set 3 lofty goals to accomplish every year and this year I’’m happy to announce that I accomplished 1 and the other 2 are in the works! However, I’ve never considered Leadership related goals so I figured what I great way to start a new tradition and share them publicly to maybe inspire a few of you to do the same. So here we go;Leadership goal #1 Read 6 new books this year. Now to some people that might be a weekend. But for me I prefer audio books, podcasts and youtube videos, so I am committing to actually reading cover to cover 6 new leadership books. Now this will be super helpful to this podcast because Chris and I have discussed doing book reviews and this will be a fun way to meet a goal and share my thoughts with all of you!Goal #2 Spend an hour a month speaking with one of my mentors about my current thoughts on leadership and being open to be challenged to learn. I spend allot of time talking to my people, my peers and those that work with me frequently, I don’t have a current strategy to make sure I am consistently checking in with my mentors to bounce ideas and discuss current philosophies of leadership. And Goal #3 Review my notes and touch bases with my people from 2018 and follow up with where they are today and help to connect dots from where they were to where they are now. Many of us are so good at reflecting over the past few months or maybe we are really good at thinking of a year while doing reviews, but to look back to 2 years ago may provide a different perspective and really allow for amazing growth conversations and dialogue.Hope you enjoyed this episode and if you have any goals that you would like to set for yourself, please feel free to post them to the world, send them to us or just write them down somewhere! Thanks for listening and we’ll talk to you all next time!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/hacking-your-leadership-podcast--4805674/support.

Thoughtful Thursdays: Do you allow your team to have dialogue and debate?

Do you allow your team to have dialogue? Do you allow your team to debate? On this week’s #ThoughtfulThursdays episode, Lorenzo shares his thoughts on how dialogue and debate lead to development.Elizabeth Boyd LinkedInBuy Lorenzo's leadership book here:Vision, Clarity, Support: A Leadership Crash Course on the 3 Pillars of Success#HackingYourLeadership #StarkEngagementConsulting #[email protected]@starkengagement.comHacking Your Leadership WebsiteHacking Your Leadership InstagramLeadership Memes TwitterStark Engagement ConsultingLife Of LozoEpisode Transcript:On this episode, I want to talk about how dialogue and debate lead to development.I was recently talking with my team about the importance of dialogue while we were working through a strategy together. I expressed that dialogue is more than just conversation because it allows people in the room to not only hear others opinions but consider the ones that may challenge their current thought process or provide perspective that helps to make a different decision.  According to the internets, The definition of Dialogue is to take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem. And the definition of a conversation is a talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people, in which news and ideas are exchanged. The difference between the two being about resolving a problem. This matters because I firmly believe that if you are empowering your team to work together to solve problems then you must give them the time and space to disagree, debate, listen to each other, debate some more until a solution is found that can be agreed upon and executed together with commitments from everyone.That. Is. Development. When you are developing people to become better leaders, the ability to teach them how to communicate their thoughts effectively, challenge others on ideas, and be open enough to change their mind are all critical skills that leaders need to sharpen to create and maintain healthy and positive work environments. I saw a post today about curiosity versus obedience by friend of the podcast Elizabeth Boyd. I will add a link to her LinkedIn account in the show notes. She says, and I quote;“The fundamental ingredient of leadership that has been neglected is a leader’s intellectual CURIOSITY to truly understand the business, the people they are supporting, and the clients they serve and how to make everyone's experience…better, memorable, enjoyable, enduring, and mutually beneficial.”What I hear in this post is that if you are not allowing your people to have dialogue to solve problems and debate each other AND you as their leader, you are killing their curiosity. And a lack of curiosity kills innovation and a lack of innovation kills a fun and productive work environment.Allow for Dialogue, Allow for Debate and allow those to be opportunities to better develop your people. Thanks for listening and talk to you all next week! Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/hacking-your-leadership-podcast--4805674/support.
