Learn science-backed answers to make the most of your mind and your life. CURIOUS? Growth Mindset Psychology is the "self-help sceptic" podcast for the curious. Whether you want to improve performance, navigate setbacks, or know who you are. We find answers to the true science of self-improvement. So put down the astrology chart and start working with your mind, instead of against it. With over 8 million downloads and 60,000 monthly listeners, you’re invited to join. PROCESS Instead of telling you what to think, we discuss how thinking works. Armed with a stack of science journals, textbooks and a boatload of curiosity, we uncover the mechanics of the mind. Why? >>> Success is personal! You might want to make the most of your neurodiverse strengths, start a business, or simply find more reasons to smile. Hone your ability for independent thinking and growth with mental models to pursue your definition of success. HOST I’m Sam Webster Harris, a lifelong learner with ADHD, a raging curiosity, and an obsession with finding answers to hard questions. After launching several businesses, travelling the world and nearly dying a few times I concluded that science and Psychology are where it’s at. What actually makes people happy? What’s the best way to treat a brain? How can I get more done? Studying the answers we find that changing behaviours requires building mindsets, mental models, and a healthy relationship with failure. I run the show to help listeners enjoy nutritious content that feeds their minds (and I needed a legitimate excuse to cover for my reading addiction). The Psychology of Black Friday - Social Contagions, Deal FOMO & Retail Rage

What are the secret drivers behind the year's biggest shopping day, and why is there so much fighting? Black Friday has become an inescapable part of life, with a deal notification even popping up as a type this... (thanks Grammarly I don't need 50% off) But it wasn't always this way. In the early 1950's Philadelphia after Thanksgiving, a flood of traffic would swell for the local football game and downtown shopping. Cops called the gridlock "Black Friday" as a derogatory term. It was slowly adopted by shops and morphed into the retail phenomenon we know today. We pull the curtains back on this crazy day: Psychological levers that get us to spend Case studies of different fights and drama How shopping impacts our emotions What are we really seeking from a deal Learn about why our rational thinking gets turned off as shops manipulate our minds to get us into a buying frenzy and how it can turn violent. The Psychology of Mistakes - 7 Ways To Fix Lazy Thinking

We celebrate 'hard work" but forget to consider the benefits of thinking "hard thoughts". This episode teaches how to navigate uncertainty without taking easy options by building a capacity for complexity. Allow doubt to improve our decisions Understand multiple causes behind outcomes Reduce judgement of others Improve your field of vision Weight statistics properly Take ownership of forming opinion without using others Accept lower confidence and greater accuracy The mind is full of complexity and it relentlessly tries to optimise and take shortcuts. This serves is well in many aspects but cultivating a practice of taking the harder path in our thinking allows us to see hidden truths behind out assumptions. To arrive at better decisions we need to learn to balance uncertainty with statistics and see beyond our limited field of view. 7 Painful Paradoxes of Self-Improvement that Create More Problems Than They Solve

A lot of the self-improvement industry and advice is backwards. The more books we read the further away from our goals we become. Ultimately we want to be happier yet we are accruing more and more things to fix before we are happy with ourselves. In this episode, we explore the biggest paradoxes where the work we do can make us more brittle and breakable: Effortlessness Paradox - The harder we try the harder we make it Happiness Paradox - Pursuing Happiness instead chases it away Validation paradox - Seeking external validation prevents internal validation Emotions paradox - Suppressing emotions makes them overwhelm us The Shadow - Rejecting our flaws makes them worse Planning Paradox - Overplanning reduces adaptability Self-Improvement Paradox - The more things you find to fix the more broken you feel Searching and finding can be different things. We learn a more subtle approach to self-improvement that spends more time building wisdom and focusing on smaller immediately actionable steps with less chasing and running in circles. We find answers to the question "How do we balance the art of wanting to improve whilst also wanting to live in contentment in the present?" 7 Time Management Tips for Busy Mortals

The anti-hustle guide to finding a balance that maximises happiness through intention and wisdom. Optimising every second of your calendar to the nth degree isn't a recipe for dreamlike productivity, it's a collision course for anxiety-riddled burnout. In our era of ever more time demands what are we to do? Oliver Burkman in his book 4,000 week presents a guide to living as a human being in a messy and demanding environment that allows you to prioritise what's essential in a calm and rational manner. The key is to not forget what else is important in a life well lived besides productive output. We can't be everywhere and do everything but anything we do commit to takes from the things we don't. Growing old and missing out on a bunch of important non-urgent life goals is not where you want to end up. The Neuroscience of Fear - Understanding anxiety, trauma & tools to overcome fears (Lessons from NPD, BPD and ADHD)

Anxiety is built into all our brains, examining the role of trauma in building fear responses helps us understand how to combat fear. We can also learn how trauma manifests in General Anxiety Disorder, Borderline (BPD), Narcissism (NPD) and ADHD. By studying the neuroscience of how fear and anxiety work in the brain we understand how life events and trauma shape our perceptions. To overcome the different fears we can learn from strategies required for individuals with specific disorders relating to fear to reduce their emotional reactions. Fear is controlled by 4 main areas in the brain, the Amygdala, the hippocampus, the Pre-Frontal Cortex and the Hypothalamus. They can keep us healthy, alive, and functioning normally. But different life events can cause them to become impaired or over-active in subtle ways causing much greater levels of fear and irrational behaviours. The episode explores how fears hold us back and the specific chemistry and biology to creates it and techniques we can learn to rebalance our brain towards more rational thinking and level responses. To achieve that we examine: The nature of Free Will and desire The role of our consciousness as an observer and actor Unconscious thought processes and behaviours How to master control of our responses in any situation How to observe physical and mental pain with curiosity This episode touches on some very important concepts deep in the fabric of our experiencing self as a human being. Navigating the River of Time - How to decide what matters

There is no better time to contemplate the meaning of your existence than a Tuesday. Tackle the meaty questions of life, using philosophical tools and some lessons from the school of Positive Psychology. We curiously dive through the principles of physics and the lessons of history to contemplate the effect of time on our lives. Opposingly we examine the effects of our life on everything else and why we even do things. Along the way, we'll take on ideas from Ghengis Kahn and Julius Caesar to songwriting and dancing. Some questions answered" What makes something worth doing? What is the point of Legacy? How can I be consistently happier? Why does no one want to be a mummy (Egyptian style) these days? What is the coolest saying ever? This is one of our more 'out there' episodes and Sam would like you to know he has not been taking drugs and that he is always like this. Several life skills make all the difference in your social and professional life. We'll even learn essential ideas that make us happier, more patient and more right. Yes, that's a thing.
