The Downsides of Bossware
Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.Bossware, workplace spyware or tattleware is another one of those trends we’ve seen emerge in recent years. We share background to a Canadian case in January where an employee was ordered to pay a fine for time theft that was picked up through monitoring software.https://decisions.civilresolutionbc.ca/crt/crtd/en/item/523029/index.doWhile there are elements of monitoring that can be helpful when it comes to individual productivity, we express our concern about the evasiveness of this sort of technology and how it can be abused by companies. Our view is that the bigger challenge is around measuring productivity and we point to the research from Microsoft report and their term productivity paranoia (see below), but we do challenge ourselves to explore any benefits it can provide. Spoiler alert … there aren’t many and we’re fans of macromanagement! Here is a link to the Microsoft report on Productivity Paranoiahttps://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work-is-just-workAnd to the idea of micromanagementhttps://www.fastcompany.com/90832818/how-to-be-a-macromanager-and-why-you-need-toQuick reminderDon’t forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter foHRsight at www.futurefoHRward.com/foHRsight.Follow us on LinkedIn:Mark - www.linkedin.com/in/markedgarhr/Naomi - www.linkedin.com/in/naomititlemancolla/future foHRward - www.linkedin.com/company/future-fohrward/And on Instagram - www.instagram.com/futurefohrward/And finally big shout out to our Producer Emily Milling at The Ultimate Creative for making us sound great! We saw this one popping up in a few articles so thought it would be a good one to delve in to.Essentially it means having a plan B to help keep yourself employable in a turbulent employment market. Of course that has implications for companies who are working hard to hold on to their top talent … but as we conclude it seems a sensible strategy for individuals to take!Link to one of the original articles here! You’ll also hear us provide us debate our respective POV on the most common term of 2022 – quiet quitting! Here is a link to the podcast Brave New Work that Mark references in his feelgood - https://www.bravenewwork.com/podcast. Productivity and Prioritization
Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. The start of the year is the time when many organizations are rolling out the priorities for their teams. In this week’s episode we make the case for thinking about prioritization in a broader sense beyond the top corporate goals. Many leaders don’t feel their teams are being productive (see Microsoft report below) and while this is contrary to the views of individuals, it does present an opportunity to focus on measuring outcomes.Taking the time to think about how you can simplify often complex tasks at work and streamline meetings can help people to prioritize their time and ultimately be more productive. As next week’s guest Gustavo Razzetti says “… busyness is a wicked problem.”A few extra resources:Microsoft Work Trend Index - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work-is-just-workHow to say no in No-vember for a happier, healthier, more productive work life – from Naomi - http://collaborativity.ca/how-to-say-no-in-no-vember-for-a-happier-healthier-more-productive-work-life/Quick reminderDon’t forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter foHRsight at www.futurefoHRward.com/foHRsight.Follow us on LinkedIn:Mark - www.linkedin.com/in/markedgarhr/Naomi - www.linkedin.com/in/naomititlemancolla/future foHRward - www.linkedin.com/company/future-fohrward/And on Instagram - www.instagram.com/futurefohrward/Support the show

Our reflections on the year that was 2022
Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. How did we get to Episode 3 so quickly! In this seasonal episode we share our reflections on the year that was 2022, but before we got in to that it was a long overdue introduction to our dogs (Tilly, Cori and Charlie – images available on Instagram!) and did a check-in on our favourite Holiday traditions. You’ll find a recipe to bread sauce here - https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/bread-sauce-0.The year that was 2022After a slow start, our sense was that 2022 was part of the much-needed process of developing a new (better) set of norms for work. This involved a lot of test-and-learn, experimentation and maybe even a little bit of ‘paralysis from analysis’.This is perhaps understandable as many leaders were cautious about setting clear expectations when they weren’t sure how their people would react – particularly in a very tight labour market. It will be interesting how 2023 unfolds – we’ll cover that in a future episode! Here is a link to some relevant articles:Thinking about quiet quitting? It’s dominated the headlines and the work of HR leaders for the last 18 months and has certainly been a big area of focus for our work as well.In this episode we start by sharing the framework we use to think about the new world of work – it’s also how we structure our newsletter foHRsight.Building the Worker EcosystemEnabling Talent to Get the Work DoneThe Learning-Agile OrganizationWellbeing in the WorkplaceFollowing a check-in about why we’re both so excited about our new podcast, we talk about the opportunity that hybrid work brings to organizations and how they should think about it.This includes:The crossroads we are at with organizations pushing for a return to the office while many employees are looking to hang on to the flexibility they have enjoyed over the last couple of years. The risk of thinking that hybrid work is all about the return to the office. It’s not.
