In our latest MarketVoice Podcast, Walt Lukken, President and CEO talks with former FIA Chairman Jerome Kemp about the movement towards real-time settlement in the derivatives industry. Kemp, the former global head of futures, clearing, and FX prime brokerage at Citi and currently president of post-trade solutions provider Baton Systems, noted that the global cleared derivatives markets continue to prove resilient and efficient on the whole. However, he notes that over the last few decades the industry has largely focused on the execution side, without properly addressing delays, risks and some bottlenecks when it comes to settlement. "You can execute in essentially real time, and when it comes to settling a trade or moving margin you're looking at at least 24 hours," Kemp said. "The implications of that are massive."

Dr. Mara Antonoff, Associate Professor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center, talks to FIA Board Member Jamila Piracci about her practical approach to inclusive recruitment that can be put into practice regardless of industry or sector. In this episode, FIA President and CEO Walt Lukken talks with Greenwood Project founders Elois and Bevon Joseph, two impressive individuals who both worked on the floors of exchanges and now dedicate their lives to helping black and Latinx students get trained and placed for internships at financial companies in Chicago, New York, London, and beyond. To date, their organization has placed 470 interns in 36 companies. Some of these interns go on to full time jobs in financial services companies. These internships are a wonderful way to introduce students to our markets and to develop a pipeline of talent for our industry. This effort is special to FIA. At our annual Boca conference this year, Walt announced a new partnership to facilitate summer internships with our member companies.

In this episode,  we feature one of the most distinguished individuals in the futures industry, Leo Melamed. Leo is a giant in this industry having served as Chairman of the CME during a time when the Merc moved from an agriculture-based futures exchange to the global powerhouse it is today.  Leo’s story is one for the ages. He escaped Jewish persecution in Nazi occupied Poland during World War II on a journey that led him across Russia, through Japan and ultimately to the United States, where he settled in Chicago. He began his work in the futures industry as a runner on the floor and rose to heights of the financial industry including becoming CME’s chairman and an advisor to US presidents and foreign leaders. Leo is the author of several books, and he has published his second autobiography called Man of the Futures: the story of Leo Melamed & the birth of modern finance.

In this episode, Russ Behnam of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission talks with FIA President and CEO Walt Lukken about the CFTC agenda and the commissioner’s groundbreaking work on the risks to financial markets posed by climate change. Commissioner Behnam has been at the commission since June 2017, and as sponsor of the Market Risk Advisory Committee has published a new report on climate-related financial risks. 

10 years of Dodd-Frank.  On July 21, 2010, President Obama signed into law the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.  The Act for the first-time regulated swaps in much the same manner as the futures industry has been regulated for decades.  In this episode, two major players of the Act are featured, CFTC Commissioners Dawn Stump and Dan Berkovitz.  Commissioner Stump was the lead staff member for the Republican side of the Senate Agriculture Committee, where the derivatives title originated. Commissioner Berkovitz was the General Counsel at the CFTC during the deliberations of the Act and the subsequent implementation by the agency. Both are now CFTC Commissioners whose job, in part, is tasked with the ongoing implementation of this historic law.  

This episode features a discussion about FinTech with Innovate Finance CEO Charlotte Crosswell. Ms. Crosswell talks with FIA President and CEO Walt Lukken about Innovate Finance, how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting FinTech, the state of the FinTech industry, the role of government partnerships or “sandboxes” and bringing greater diversity to the financial services industry.  Ms. Before joining Innovate Finance, Ms. Crosswell spent most of her career in finance and market infrastructure roles, running an exchange for NASDAQ, serving on the London Clearing House Board, running international business development for the London Stock Exchange and beginning her career with Goldman Sachs.
