For a lot of us, the hopes of our kids returning to school at the end of summer quickly turned into a scramble of us trying to figure out how we were going to deal with kids learning remotely. Right now there are two overwhelming emotions I'm seeing in the voice acting community, both in social media and through the private coaching I do with voice actors for business and marketing. Those two emotions are guilt and fear. Neither of them serve you or your business, and neither one of them should be stopping you from going to work each day. For talent who are still working, there's a sense of guilt when so many others are out of work. It shouldn't be this way. It doesn't need to be this way. Still for others, there's a sense of fear. Since caveman days, our brains have been genetically pre-disposed to protection. Our programming is designed to keep us safe. Reading through the pages of a book written in 1880 by a very successful businessman, was a reminder to me of why it's absolutely essential to have a follow-up strategy for your voice over leads, prospects and clients. Nobody can eat just one cookie... nobody who's being honest, anyway. One cookie ALWAYS leads two. Sometimes three. Sometimes, in the case of a certain barbecue loving, voice acting Canadian who shall remain nameless... six or eight. The point is, once you start down a slippery slope... you slide! It's no different with the goals you've set for yourself and your business. Building a legit home studio is a dream goal for many voice actors. To finally have a place to work in that isn't a closet! Before you dive into a build, there are a lot of factors you need to consider. Many things you need to plan for. If you're going to finally build your space, you want to build something you're happy with. A place you're excited to spend your days. While I am not a home studio expert, I did go through a complete build from scratch and certainly learned a few lessons along the way. Success is in the follow up. This is something I preach from on high every time I have an opportunity to say it to anyone who is willing to listen.
