Brewing My Coffee Brand: 2023 Lessons to 2024 Goals
Send us a textIn this wide-ranging podcast episode, I frankly discuss the journey I'm on to build my coffee brand and business. I talk about my goals for 2024, including expanding my podcast output, upgrading my video gear to improve workflow, revamping my website to create a "digital coffee shop", putting out recipe content, simplifying my coffee offerings, getting onto Amazon, and finding the right partners. Underpinning it all is my dedication and motivation to keep pushing myself even when frustrated, the lack of a defined "endgame", and my belief that the journey itself brings opportunities.I also use a just-roasted Kenyan coffee to exemplify how I want to bring listeners along on the process of seeing how different beans respond to different roast profiles and brew methods. I admit the current batch has a strong "green" taste but am curious to experiment with it more, calling myself "the Antichrist of specialty coffee" - never content to accept the status quo....For good tasty coffee, check us out at: everydaybeans.comFor tips, tricks and still trying to figure it out: https://www.youtube.com/@everyday-beans

Send us a textIn this podcast episode, I discuss my thought process around getting back to basics when it comes to making coffee. I share how, as specialty coffee producers, we often focus intently on controlling the full process and experience for the customer. Roaster's Inside Perspective: Discovering A Delicate New Kenyan Coffee
Send us a textIn this podcast episode, I discuss my experiences as a coffee roaster and some of the recent coffee origins I've been working with. I compare how the latest Ethiopian and Kenyan coffees are tasting compared to my memories of them, noting that many current coffees seem more delicate and their flavors less vibrant than what I recall. I explain why as a roaster, I get to understand a coffee's characteristics more intricately since I roast samples in numerous ways from light to dark profiles. This allows me to really get to know a coffee on multiple levels.I then explain how I plan to take listeners along on my journey of discovering how to best roast and brew a new Kenyan coffee that the importer described as delicate. Rediscovering French Press - The Muddy Flavor Struggle is Real
Send us a textIn this podcast episode, I discuss my experience with a Guatemalan coffee roasted to a medium level and prepared using a French press. I share my journey with various coffee brewing methods over time, from starting with French press to exploring pour over and Chemex, and ultimately landing on filter coffee as my preferred method.I brew the Guatemalan coffee in a French press and find that it produces a "muddy" and lackluster flavor that I'm disappointed with. This leads me to a discussion about the impact of brew method on a coffee's taste profile. I contemplate whether my manipulation of the coffee to try getting a better taste defeats the purpose of impartially evaluating that coffee. Revisiting French Press Flaws and Wins on My Coffee Roasting Journey
Send us a textIn this podcast episode, I brew French press coffee and discuss my experiences with this classic manual brewing method. I'm using a dark roast Sumatran which produces a muddy, muted cup lacking clarity and flavor when prepared as French press. I describe the taste as just "hot motor oil" rather than the sweet spot I typically find as coffee cools. I explain how I started with French press years ago for simplicity but moved towards pourover and espresso gadgets over time. However, I'm revisiting French press now to recreate that nostalgic taste and will try different coffees and recipes. I also give listeners a behind-the-scenes look at recent coffee roasting, securing new bags for packaging, and exploring Amazon listings to grow my roastery.Listeners will get an honest critique of French press preparation using a less-developed dark roast, learn why I’m reexploring this manual brewing style, and hear about my ongoing efforts to scale up operations through roasting, packaging...For good tasty coffee, check us out at: everydaybeans.comFor tips, tricks and still trying to figure it out: https://www.youtube.com/@everyday-beans

Roaster's Revelations: Inside My Evaluation Methods and Scaling Plans
Send us a textIn this podcast episode, I discuss my enjoyment of recording these podcasts and how it has become something I look forward to rather than see as a chore. I talk about the coffee I'm tasting - an "outcast" blend of South American and robusta beans - and how I use a clear glass Bodum cup which allows me to better evaluate the roast. The see-through glass keeps the coffee honest, letting me clearly perceive flavors rather than being influenced by any preconceptions as the roaster. I feel this cup also slows me down to fully appreciate the flavors as the coffee cools. Later in the podcast, I describe vacuum sealing and freeze drying some leftover roasted coffee to preserve and revisit batches later. I also touch on upcoming plans, like finalizing bag selection, connecting with vendors to roast more coffee, and being strategic in growing the business.Listeners will learn how I honestly evaluate my roasts, my process for saving and revisiting coffees, and some of the behind-the-scenes planFor good tasty coffee, check us out at: everydaybeans.comFor tips, tricks and still trying to figure it out: https://www.youtube.com/@everyday-beans

Empowering Coffee Drinkers Through Flavor Experiments Not Universals
Send us a textIn this episode, I discuss my experiments using a coffee refractometer to adjust grind size and other variables to optimize extraction and flavor. I share anecdotes about the variability of coffee over time, even from the same roaster, and how factors like freshness, age, crop changes and more mean flavor profiles fluctuate between orders. I urge consumers not to simply accept a roaster’s tasting notes or brew guides as definitive. While they provide an insightful starting point, individuals’ preferences hold equal importance in determining an enjoyable cup.Ultimately, I examine the limitations around controlling others’ coffee preparation Rituals despite roasters’ expertise. Comparing brew recipes to cooking recipes, I explain how people adapt methods to suit their tastes anyway. Beyond the Rules: Finding Joy in Imperfect Coffee Amidst Life's Hustle

I urge listeners not to get so caught up in the constructed perfectionism of coffee rituals that we lose sight of simply enjoying the drink.Through anecdotes of overwhelmed times, I gently challenge the illusion that strictly adhering to specifics like optimal temperature, grind size, brew time etc. defines a ruined or perfect cup. Coffee Roasters don't know shit...part 1
Send us a textIn this solo podcast, I share weekend anecdotes including cooking for my kids while my wife is traveling. I discuss how baking gluten-free treats has expanded my knowledge around developing flavors and textures that I apply to coffee roasting. I analyze a recent batch I roasted and brewed, noting how extraction readings conflicted with my taste perceptions, proving roasters rely too heavily on individual palates over relatable experiences connecting us to coffee drinkers.I urge consumers not to simply trust roasters’ flavor profiles or brew guides, but instead connect with their own preferences. Listeners gain insight into my roasting and brewing process and belief that while professional expertise has validity, individual palates hold equal weight in specialty coffee evaluations. The main takeaway: perfection and objectivity matter less than enjoying coffee rituals. Decoded: Analyzing Grocery Store Coffee Labels Through Sensory
Send us a textI discuss my recent experience taste-testing an Amazon Fresh branded Columbian medium roast whole bean coffee. I wanted to analyze the packaging and flavor profile both as market research and to validate their labeling. Going into sensory analysis mode, I outline the standard stages of the roasting process from green to first crack to second crack in order to contextualize what chemically denotes light, medium and dark roasts along that continuum. However, perceptible roast levels remain subjective depending on factors like processing method and the bean varietal’s inherent flavors. In this case, despite being branded medium roast, systematic measurements and tasting the very muted fruitiness and cocoa notes evidenced an actual dark roast. My ultimate takeaway is that specialty coffee terminology still varies widely, so rather than pretentiously quibbling over imprecise language on cheap grocery store offerings, I should remain focused on properly categorizing and showcasing my own cofFor good tasty coffee, check us out at: everydaybeans.comFor tips, tricks and still trying to figure it out: https://www.youtube.com/@everyday-beans
