Episode 466: Circles Around The Sun

Episode 466: Circles Around The Sun

Since its inception in 2015 as the soundtrack to the end of the Grateful Dead's long strange trip, Neal Casal's Circles Around The Sun has evolved and grown into something much greater than the sum of its parts (keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Dan Horne, and drummer Mark Levy) and original mission. In August of 2019, tragedy struck when Casal took his own life, but he didn't exit this world without leaving behind something for the rest of us: MUSIC. Circles Around The Sun, the band's third and final album with Casal, is a party the size of the universe and unlike anything the band has done before. It's also a bittersweet reminder that even when the light is barely flickering, there's still so much joy to be found if you just look in the right direction. We’re part of the Osiris podcast network. Episode 459: Jeff Parker's 'Suite for Max Brown'

Guitarist Jeff Parker is best known for his work with Chicago post-rock gawds Tortoise. But anyone who has followed his career knows that he has a long history of sharing the spotlight with heavy hitters like Joshua Redman, Meshell Ndegeocello, and more while continuing to occupy the more experimental corners of the jazz world with the likes of Makaya McCraven and the new Chicago jazz scene. Suite for Max Brown, a forged-from-joy mixtape from outer-space, expands the lexicon of modern jazz even when it lets off the gas to pay tribute to Parker’s roots, and isn’t just a high-point in Parker’s discography, but maybe a new bar for jazz as we know it today. Wes Covey joins us to discuss this unimpeachable masterpiece and why the future of jazz in 2020 looks brighter than ever.PLUS! Episode 455: In Conversation with Ryan Walsh (Hallelujah The Hills)

After garnering national attention and widespread acclaim for Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968 – one of the best books ever written about rock music, Van Morrison, Boston, or possibly all of the above – singer/bandleader Ryan Walsh knew that his next project would be a new Hallelujah The Hills album, and now I’m You, the band’s magnum opus is here. Episode 454: R.E.M.'s 'Monster' at 25

Twenty-five years ago, R.E.M was practically the biggest band on the planet. “What could they possibly do next?” was the question on everyone’s minds after the Athens, Georgia quartet’s career-defining double-shot of Out Of Time and Automatic For The People, and the answer, for many, was perplexing. Throwing glam-rock, psychedelia, punk, avant-garde, and a dash of pop sensibility into a blender, the band hit “crush” and the result was Monster, the most polarizing album of their careers. It was also one of their best.Let’s discuss. Lush, sophisticated, and at times transcendent, Wave isn’t just Patrick Watson’s (the band) best album, its ability to speak to not just personal pain, but the existential threats many are facing in 2019 make it a late entry in the race for one of best albums of the decade. We’re part of the Osiris podcast network. Episode 447: Wilco's 'Ode To Joy'

Episode 447: Wilco's 'Ode To Joy'

2015’s Star Wars and its 2016 follow up Schmilco delivered a shot in the arm to one of indie-rock’s most lauded and revered acts: Wilco. Both were shaggier affairs then what had come before — 2011’s The Whole Love, while it had its moments, was a more near-miss-than-hit power-pop extravaganza. And both showed that, at least for Wilco, smaller albums necessarily meant better albums as the band pushed into its second decade with the current, and most stable lineup in Wilco’s history. Enter Ode To Joy.Taught, anxious, and sonically adventurous in ways Wilco hasn’t been since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, their latest LP is an exploration of the myriad of emotionally microscopic ways the fucked-up world of today affects us both individually and as a collective people. And while the light may still shine through the multitude of cracks in the darkness on Ode To Joy — after all…Wilco still loves you baby — the personal politics of justifiably freaking out are where Wilco’s latest ultimately burns the brightest.Special guest Matt Dwyer joins us to discuss this essential work from a band that continues to surprise after a quarter century of breaking our hearts in all the best ways. We’re part of the Osiris podcast network. After several years working behind the scenes, the legendary Raphael Saadiq returns to the spotlight to deliver his most personal, and compelling album to date. Jimmy Lee (named after his brother who was an addict who died of AIDS) takes a profoundly human look at not just the consequences of addiction, but the underlying causes. Episode 432: Rosenau and Sanborn's 'Bluebird'

Episode 432: Rosenau and Sanborn's 'Bluebird'

Chris Rosenau (Collections of Colonies Of Bees, Volcano Choir) and Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso, Made Of Oak) have traveled in the same creative circles for years now, but it was an off-the-cuff improv set at the inaugural Eaux Claires fest that has led to one of the most powerful releases of 2019, Bluebird. The open window and doors of the small North Carolina studio that Bluebird was recorded in gives the EP a sense of place in the world, but it is the magic weaved between Rosenau’s guitar and Sanborn’s electronic wizardry that pulls the listener wholly out of time and space into a moment of creation that is unlike anything you’re likely to experience this year.PLUS! Alexandra Sauser-Monnig (Mountain Man) makes her debut as Daughter Of Swords on her new LP Dawnbreaker. Taking it’s subject from the eventual end of Sauser-Monnig’s relationship with her partner, Dawnbreaker is brimming with heartbreak, warmth, and quiet moments of wisdom on how we all deal with the end of a relationship, and learn to love not just someone else, but ourselves again. We’re part of the Osiris podcast network. Episode 429: Rose City Band And The Resurgence of Jam

In the modern music era, most new releases come saddled with histories we’re supposed to believe in, recycled narratives, and increasingly thirsty marketing “hooks.” Which is what makes Rose City Band’s self-titled debut such a unicorn of an album. There are only two things that we know for sure about this band:1) Ripley Johnson (Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips) produced it.2) It jams.Refreshing AF, right?Special guest Jonathan Hart (Brokedown Pod) joins us to discuss why Rose City Band is destined to be the soundtrack of your Summer, the resurgence of “jam band” music in the mainstream, and more. On his nineteenth album (and first in five years) rock and roll legend / Broadway star Bruce Springsteen is turning his gaze to the “West,” and the results are a totally unique, if not polarizing, new entry into his lauded body of work. Western Stars utilizes the sounds of late 60’s Capitol Records (Glen Campbell, The Wrecking Crew, Phil Spector) to color the stories of men on the frontier, not just of America, but the edges of their lives. Is Western Stars a fine return to form for the Boss or a stylistic bridge too far? Episode 427: Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The U.S.A.' at 35

Episode 427: Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The U.S.A.' at 35

Whether you see Born In The U.S.A. as Springsteen’s most significant achievement as an artist or just a strange, 80’s sounding outlier in an otherwise muscular catalog, it remains to this day one of the most potent statements about the down-and-out in America ever made. Despite its rock ‘n’ roll sheen, misunderstood rallying cries, and anthems to nostalgia, Born In The U.S.A. was a hopelessly bleak look at what it meant to be an American in the wake of the Vietnam War that, thirty-five years later, still resonates across generations, class, and race. A monument to the ‘everyman,’ it marked the end of an era for Springsteen that, despite its darkness, finally launched him into the pop stratosphere that he and the E Street Band had been chasing for more than a decade. On an all-new Discologist, we’re dissecting this classic to get to the heart of its persistent relevance today, how it shapes the long-view of Springsteen’s career and a particularly “moist” song that also happens to be particularly great.
