Google+ Twitter @popey TriggerPope Mastodon Youtube Launchpad Github Ubuntu Member Ubuntu LoCo Member Ubuntu Membership Board Some information on Alan’s Bio Alan has been a Community Manager at Canonical primarily working on Ubuntu for devices but is pretty much anywhere and everywhere that Ubuntu is. He first encountered Linux in the mid-1990s, and ran Red Hat then Debian on the desktop and server until Ubuntu Warty came out. Alan has been using Ubuntu since 4.10 – the Warty Warthog and never looked back. Previously Alan spent 13 years working as a system admin on some evil German proprietary software, but did what he could for Ubuntu and Linux in his spare time. Alan became an Ubuntu member in 2006 and has in the past been the contact person for the UK LoCo team, a member of the LoCo Council and a member of the EMEA Membership board and the Community Council. He quite dislikes forums. Alan likes cats. Setup and ran the Screencast Team which aimed to create a set of tutorial videos for new Ubuntu users. As part of that he managed the Ubuntu Screencasts Site. Since then Alan has now handed this over to another Ubuntu member. Often runs development releases of Ubuntu early in the cycle to provide testing, bug reporting and triage help. Helping to organise OGGCamp – a barcamp style unconference. Welcome to Destination Linux for 10-30-17 This week we will be covering…………. Ubuntu 18.04 LXqt Xubuntu Antix Linux Mint and the latest gaming news But first, we have a viewer email “I bought a second hand hdd from a sale the local school had. It’s a 2tb western digital blue I installed it, got it mounted and used it for about an hour before it became inaccessible. Reformatting at this point left me w a chunk of inaccessible data. Now either hdparm or disks put its status as frozen. From my understanding this can be fixed by power cycling the hdd without power cycling the computer? I’m wondering if this will be a continuous problem on this drive? Would the easiest solution be to put it in an external case?” Eric Noah J. Episode 39: Destination Linux EP39 – The Bit You Should Read

Welcome to Episode 39 of Destination Linux for 10/02/17 Correction from last week Just to set things straight, ArchMerge is a separate project from ArchLabs with a completely separate team. There is no collaboration between ArchLabs and ArchMerge and they have a completely different vision about a distro. They each go their own way. I apologize for confusing the two together. News Ubuntu Is Dropping 32-bit Desktop Images Last year OMGubuntu ran a poll asking how which version of Ubuntu you use: 32-bit or 64-bit. The results of that poll revealed that 92% run Ubuntu 64-bit already. It’s a relic that’s sat in my Summer Sale games archive for a while and considered by many to be one of the best games ever created by Valve. I’ve finally broken it out and starting to play through the story. It runs beautifully on Linux and so far find the very hurried pace and a solid story to be incredibly engaging. The fact that I am playing this means Half-Life 3 is confirmed! Half-Life: C.A.G.E.D. from former Valve worker should hopefully come to Linux Might be worth letting them know in the post if you’re interested. ‘SC Controller’ has a pre-release to support more gamepads Atari is launching a new gaming system, the ‘Ataribox’ Official Website WWI FPS ‘Tannenberg’ from the developers of Verdun to see day-1 Linux support Rocket League’s huge ‘Autumn Update’ is now available The SNES Classic Mini Uses the Same Hardware as the NES Mini Admin Destination Linux Apparel Where Can You Find Us This Week Rocco and Ryan will be playing Rocket League live this week on DasGeek Channel Friday Night Live on the BigDaddyLinux Channel Twitter @dasgeekchannel @bigdaddylinux A big thank you to each and every one of you for supporting us and Thank you For Watching Destination Linux Have a great week and remember the Journey ITSELF is just as important as the Destination

If you want Ubiquity to not install grub, running “ubiquity -b” will be of use to you. In my experience, it hasn’t stopped Ubuntu from automatically mounting my EFI partition when I log into my Ubuntu partition, but it does prevent Ubuntu from overwriting the existing GRUB on the EFI partition. I hope this helps. -Mark Destination Linux Apparel Admin A big thank you to each and every one of you for supporting us and Thank you For Watching Destination Linux Have a great week and remember the Journey ITSELF is just as important as the Destination

As self-confessed distro-hoppers I was wondering if you could discuss elementary os and maybe a focus on minimalism in distros – being ill right now gave me an epiphany that I used to distro-hop like crazy until I landed on elementary. When I started using it, I felt trapped because it’s not as flexible as (for example) KDE and hated it until I realised that it has its own work flow that prevented me from breaking it – now I rely on it and can’t imagine switching. Is this minimalist approach key to stability in the Linux desktop? When I can configure a desktop, I find I will and then I inevitably switch to another distro when I break it – but when I can’t tinker with it, I get things done more effectively and am more likely to stick with it. Sorry for the short essay, thanks, and keep up the great work! Kind regards, William Willis Whinn Mentions: Elementary Tweak & Elementary Plus (Missing Icons)

It’s Now a Real Theme Viewer comments I listened to the MP3 ‘Destination Linux Update’ dated 20th April 17 on Podbean.  The last regular episode I had was Number 14 dated 1st April 17.  I’m sorry you’ve been having problems and really like the show.  However, I resubscribed to the show and still had the same episode listings as before. I don’t understand the finer details of podcasting and subscriptions and so I’m wondering how it is that I got nothing from Episode 14 apart from the ‘Update’?  Surely, if I got the ‘Update’, I’d at least get every episode since then? Thanks for bearing with me and for your help in my Linux journey. Best wishes Andrew ——————————————————————————————————————— Hey guys great to see you finally have a real website. And thanks for the referral message. My Podcast Addict still had the old feed and I was beginning to wonder was going on. Enjoy the show, and really enjoy the “safe for work” aspect of the show. And while I listen to other podcasts, many I can’t recommend to others. BTW- The Email link and the Telegram links don’t work. Keep up good work! Thanks, David ——————————————————————————————————————- Hi Rob & Rocco With the never-ending nonsense from YouTube regarding flagging videos for no logical reason, etc. – would ye guys consider moving to another video site? I recommend Dailymotion. Additionally ye could upload your videos (past & future) to archive.org. Torin —————————————————————————————————————– Hi guys Absolutely love the Destination Linux podcast & both of your own YouTube channels. Fantastic work! I’d be interested to find out if either of you have tried Chakra? https://chakralinux.org/ I’ve recently started to run Chakra as my daily driver and find it to be a superb KDE implementation. By far the best Linux distribution to fit my needs. From what I can tell they’ve been going a few years now & came up with the idea of a half-rolling release model long before Linux Mint or KDE Neon. I don’t see many reviews or videos available for Chakra & I believe they deserve much more attention. I’d really appreciate any thoughts or comments! Kind Regards Mark ————————————————————————————————————— Hello:  Rob & Rocco Just wanted to tell you all, that the new Ubuntu Mate 17.04 does not work on my system.  Big deal!  That’s not a deal killer for me i will just use something else. What works for me. ( fedora 25 ) yes like all the distro’s they are all in need of some work. I will say to you guy’s keep doing what you are doing. Your shows are for everyone to enjoy.  And i do, Those who don’t like what you say about distros or the comments, or reviews don’t need to complain. If they want to do a disto review. just jump right in, and do your own assessment of the distros. And they can then put on their big boy pants, and see what happens!  Everyone is a expert but the expert! Love the show, reviews and guests. Keep going it is all good and fun. Jalu ( just a linux user ) Ben S ————————————————————————————————————— Hi guys, great channel – loving the weekly shows. I don’t know if you already have one, but have you considered creating a Patreon page as a way to accept donations? Happy to contribute in a small way, as I’m sure others are, towards the cost of keeping the doors open :-). Keep up the great shows guys. What are your thoughts on whether or not the Linux distros should seriously begin thinking about making the desktop UIs more touch friendly?  I ask this because as you know, more and more ultrabooks and even some of the desktop all-in-one PCs have touch screens nowadays. By and large the Linux desktop user interfaces are still primarily mouse and keyboard focused.  Perhaps the Unity desktop comes the closest to being more touch friendly, but then there’s the question of the applications that are written for Linux as well.  Not that I’m suggesting that mouse and keyboard go away, but just provide touch capabilities as well.  The OS could add support for touchpad gestures, etc. Just wondering what your thoughts are?  May be a good discussion for you and Rocco on Destination Linux.  I know you have the Solus guy on there a week or so ago.  Perhaps he has some thoughts on this.
