What have I been playing this week?
Tyranny – Story driven RPG where your choices mean all the difference in a world conquered by evil. Gorgeous graphics, in-depth RPG storyline where you’re engaged in conversations that actually matter and your responses matter. Loot is plentiful and combat is handled brilliantly with strategic battles that include a pause option to allow you to properly plan your parties attack and ability use. It’s not a casual game it’s a true RPG and requires a lot of planning and tuning of your characters abilities and powers.

Some information on Alan’s Bio
Alan has been a Community Manager at Canonical primarily working on Ubuntu for devices but is pretty much anywhere and everywhere that Ubuntu is.
He first encountered Linux in the mid-1990s, and ran Red Hat then Debian on the desktop and server until Ubuntu Warty came out. Alan has been using Ubuntu since 4.10 – the Warty Warthog and never looked back.
Previously Alan spent 13 years working as a system admin on some evil German proprietary software, but did what he could for Ubuntu and Linux in his spare time.
Alan became an Ubuntu member in 2006 and has in the past been the contact person for the UK LoCo team, a member of the LoCo Council and a member of the EMEA Membership board and the Community Council. He quite dislikes forums. Alan likes cats.
Setup and ran the Screencast Team which aimed to create a set of tutorial videos for new Ubuntu users. As part of that he managed the Ubuntu Screencasts Site. Since then Alan has now handed this over to another Ubuntu member.
Often runs development releases of Ubuntu early in the cycle to provide testing, bug reporting and triage help.
Helping to organise OGGCamp – a barcamp style unconference.

Started the Ubuntu Podcast and continue to co-present, mirror, co-produce and co-manage the show along with a few other members of the UK LoCo Team Mark Johnson & Martin Wimpress
UBP has around 3,000 core subscribers with each episode downloaded about 10,000 times. You also recently hit 1.4 million downloads which is quite an achievement for a niche podcast.

“I bought a second hand hdd from a sale the local school had. It’s a 2tb western digital blue I installed it, got it mounted and used it for about an hour before it became inaccessible. Reformatting at this point left me w a chunk of inaccessible data. Now either hdparm or disks put its status as frozen. From my understanding this can be fixed by power cycling the hdd without power cycling the computer? I’m wondering if this will be a continuous problem on this drive? Would the easiest solution be to put it in an external case?”

Just to set things straight, ArchMerge is a separate project from ArchLabs with a completely separate team. There is no collaboration between ArchLabs and ArchMerge and they have a completely different vision about a distro. They each go their own way. I apologize for confusing the two together.

What have I been playing:
This week has been full of Half Life 2 gameplay. It’s a relic that’s sat in my Summer Sale games archive for a while and considered by many to be one of the best games ever created by Valve. I’ve finally broken it out and starting to play through the story. It runs beautifully on Linux and so far find the very hurried pace and a solid story to be incredibly engaging. The fact that I am playing this means Half-Life 3 is confirmed!
Half-Life: C.A.G.E.D. from former Valve worker should hopefully come to Linux

This Week in Solus – Install #46
Solus 3 has had quite the reception but the work continues including a TO-DO list posted on Solus site for all the features, enhancements and bug fixes they’re working on. https://dev.solus-project.com/T4235
Some High Priority Items that are being worked on I think will be refreshing for many
Third Party support is one of the pain points I’ve heard and Ikey and the team have taken note. They’re going to be working on improvements to third party offerings in SNAP, upgrade improvements, and potentially more third party options.
X-Stack upgrades to help with compatibility with APU + AMD GPU combos
Improvements to Nautilus and Samba support
Preston package and licensing scanning and ferryd for faster indexing and syncing of repos.
Replacing eopkg with sol for software framework

Hey guys,
I’m currently listening to this week’s episode of Destination Linux, & I have a suggestion about GRUB that may be useful. If you want Ubiquity to not install grub, running “ubiquity -b” will be of use to you. In my experience, it hasn’t stopped Ubuntu from automatically mounting my EFI partition when I log into my Ubuntu partition, but it does prevent Ubuntu from overwriting the existing GRUB on the EFI partition.
I hope this helps.

Icons can now be automatically aligned on a grid, either in lines or in columns.
They can also be automatically sorted in various ways: By name, by size, by type or by modified date.
You can also change desktop icon sizes with a click of a button, and desktop icons are now handled in their own separate process, which isn’t tied to other nemo windows.
Cinnamon Spices
Cinnamon Spices website was rewritten from scratch
The goal wasn’t only to make it look better. More secure than before and attempting to guarantee better quality and better compatibility
The site supports oauth authentication via Google, Facebook and Github so you can comment and like your favorite spices
The maintenance of the spices themselves was moved to Github and every single change is now reviewed by the Linux Mint team to guarantee spices cannot be used for malicious purposes
Anyone can provide bug fixes and translations to Cinnamon spices
Both the Authors and the Linux Mint team is now directly involved in the maintenance of all Cinnamon spices. Many spices were removed, many were fixed, many were updated and the team is now able to add support to spices not only for current versions of Cinnamon but even for upcoming ones.
We’re getting closer and closer to a situation where everything “just works”, where quality spices are easy to find and where they work in your language.

Ubunsys Gives Ubuntu Power Users Easy Access to Scary Options
Installed today
Needs some work – but is still in dev.
Adds PPA’s, etc like welcome. But a 3rd party – may want to check what it is adding.
Seems to need a lot of BG access – expected.
Some of the option like repairing PPA actually rely on other tools that need to be installed from 3rd party PPA’s – but no dependency, just not found – like the y-ppa-manager, but available in the options to install.
Chrome 59 arrives with…
Some updates for the other OS’s like mac notifications
30 some bug fixes
To avoid over-prompting users, Chrome will now temp stop an origin from requesting a permission following the third dismissal of that permission request.
Some cosmetic changes like a material design overhaul in the settings page
The Image Capture API allows higher resolution images than before. That means developers get full control over camera settings such as zoom, ISO, and white balance.
Seems to be mostly developer related updated
Stuff like:
vTouch events
new worker-src Content Security Policy directive
vgetInstalledRelatedApps function (smartly consolidate push notifications)

Hi Rob and Rocco,
Just thought I’d give a shout out to my new favourite podcast, thank you both for all of your hard work, and on your respective YouTube channels too.
As self-confessed distro-hoppers I was wondering if you could discuss elementary os and maybe a focus on minimalism in distros – being ill right now gave me an epiphany that I used to distro-hop like crazy until I landed on elementary. When I started using it, I felt trapped because it’s not as flexible as (for example) KDE and hated it until I realised that it has its own work flow that prevented me from breaking it – now I rely on it and can’t imagine switching. Is this minimalist approach key to stability in the Linux desktop? When I can configure a desktop, I find I will and then I inevitably switch to another distro when I break it – but when I can’t tinker with it, I get things done more effectively and am more likely to stick with it.
Sorry for the short essay, thanks, and keep up the great work!
Kind regards,
William Willis Whinn

I listened to the MP3 ‘Destination Linux Update’ dated 20th April 17 on Podbean. The last regular episode I had was Number 14 dated 1st April 17. I’m sorry you’ve been having problems and really like the show. However, I resubscribed to the show and still had the same episode listings as before.
I don’t understand the finer details of podcasting and subscriptions and so I’m wondering how it is that I got nothing from Episode 14 apart from the ‘Update’? Surely, if I got the ‘Update’, I’d at least get every episode since then?
Thanks for bearing with me and for your help in my Linux journey.
Best wishes
Andrew

Hey guys great to see you finally have a real website. And thanks for the referral message. My Podcast Addict still had the old feed and I was beginning to wonder was going on.
Enjoy the show, and really enjoy the “safe for work” aspect of the show. And while I listen to other podcasts, many I can’t recommend to others.
BTW- The Email link and the Telegram links don’t work.
Keep up good work!
Thanks,
David

Hi Rob & Rocco
With the never-ending nonsense from YouTube regarding flagging videos for no logical reason, etc. – would ye guys consider moving to another video site? I recommend Dailymotion. Additionally ye could upload your videos (past & future) to archive.org.

Hi guys
Absolutely love the Destination Linux podcast & both of your own YouTube
channels. Fantastic work!
I’d be interested to find out if either of you have tried Chakra?
https://chakralinux.org/
I’ve recently started to run Chakra as my daily driver and find it to be
a superb KDE implementation. By far the best Linux distribution to fit
my needs.
From what I can tell they’ve been going a few years now & came up with
the idea of a half-rolling release model long before Linux Mint or KDE
Neon.
I don’t see many reviews or videos available for Chakra & I believe they
deserve much more attention.
I’d really appreciate any thoughts or comments!
Kind Regards
Mark

Hello: Rob & Rocco
Just wanted to tell you all, that the new Ubuntu Mate 17.04 does not work on my system. Big deal! That’s not a deal killer for me i will just use something else. What works for me. ( fedora 25 ) yes like all the distro’s they are all in need of some work. I will say to you guy’s keep doing what you are doing. Your shows are for everyone to enjoy. And i do, Those who don’t like what you say about distros or the comments, or reviews don’t need to complain. If they want to do a disto review. just jump right in, and do your own assessment of the distros. And they can then put on their big boy pants, and see what happens! Everyone is a expert but the expert!
Love the show, reviews and guests. Keep going it is all good and fun.
Jalu ( just a linux user )

Keep up the great shows guys.

Instructions for the Fix
==============================================================
1) Make sure gedit is installed (sudo get-apt install gedit)
2) We need to install 3 items: (Synaptic Package Manager recommended)
Pulseaudio (if not installed)
pavucontrol (if not installed)
swh-plugins
3)Type in konsole:
sudo gedit /etc/pulse/default.pa
*(nano doesn’t work)
4) Scroll to the bottom of the file “/etc/pulse/default.pa” and add the following lines:
### Pulseaudio Dynamic Range Compression

.nofail
load-module module-ladspa-sink sink_name=compressor plugin=sc4m_1916 label=sc4m control=1,1.5,401,-30,20,5,12
.fail
.endif
5) Save the file and restart PC
6) Open pavucontrol and choose LADSPA output module
(this may not actually look like it’s selected, but the icon of the output device should say “LADSPA stream on”
7) Then set each Application output to the LADSPA module.
8) Done. Your ears will thank you. Pass it on.

Ubuntu Snaps to Integrate Fully with GNOME and KDE
“Snaps continue for Ubuntu and other distributions (now Fedora, openSUSE, Debian and others). They will also integrate fully with GNOME, KDE, and I hope Elementary, MATE, etc. too,” said Mark Shuttleworth. “They are an amazingly clean way to deliver apps and since most of the major software companies target Ubuntu this is a good way to enable other distros to benefit too.”

Hi there
I’m on 16.04.2 lts
I always used to have this problem. Instead of a reboot I found online (can’t remember where) using ‘Sudo systemctl restart network-manager’ Worked and prevented a reboot.
The problem stopped recently for me. However my upgrade to 16.04.2 coincided with a change of ISP and router. Didn’t think until I listened to this episode that I hadn’t pinned the problem to the router or wifI driver (I use broadcom with kernel firmware)
All the best
Jim

keep on the great work.

Rob, I’ve been thinking about this for the past few weeks.
What are your thoughts on whether or not the Linux distros should seriously begin thinking about making the desktop UIs more touch friendly? I ask this because as you know, more and more ultrabooks and even some of the desktop all-in-one PCs have touch screens nowadays.
By and large the Linux desktop user interfaces are still primarily mouse and keyboard focused. Perhaps the Unity desktop comes the closest to being more touch friendly, but then there’s the question of the applications that are written for Linux as well. Not that I’m suggesting that mouse and keyboard go away, but just provide touch capabilities as well. The OS could add support for touchpad gestures, etc.
Just wondering what your thoughts are? May be a good discussion for you and Rocco on Destination Linux. I know you have the Solus guy on there a week or so ago. Perhaps he has some thoughts on this.

The Revenge Installer is a program made by our friend Jody James, which is a Graphical Installer for Arch Linux to make installing vanilla arch an easy task. It walks you through the steps by asking you questions and before you know it, you will have a brand new plain vanilla arch with the desktop of your choice.
Thank you Jody, for all of the hard work you put into it.

I was wondering if there is a way to normalize the master audio output in Linux. I love Linux but don’t like playing movies or music because the audio out is not normalized and I have manually adjust the volume levels constantly. In Windows I use K Lite codec pack which has a plugin option to normalize the main audio out, but I can’t seem to find a way to do this in Linux. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, great show, loving it !
Had the same problem with normalizing sound and this is how I solve it, it’s pretty easy, in your distribution find and install LADSPA plugins, then just edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and add this two lines at the end :
load-module module-ladspa-sink sink_name=compressor plugin=sc4_1882 label=sc4 control=1,1.5,401,-10,20,5,12
set-default-sink compressor
Reboot and it’s all good
Possible answer as well

From RK:
I have successfully installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS on my Mac Mini as a dual boot system. I also got rEfind installed manually on my Mac. The thing is that rEfind can’t seam to boot Ubuntu. I did figure out how to boot into it from a recovery boot in Advanced Systems. I have it all setup, and it is working well, except for that. Do you have any sage advice that could help me solve that boot up problem?
RK Fixed:
I can’t believe it, but I solved the problem myself. I was searching the Internet, and I saw the word “nomodeset”. I used that command to launch the live disk. I thought,,, “Of course”. I found a web page that told me how to edit my grub file to make it permanent, and … It worked!!! Hooray!

I get that you use Antergos a lot from your videos. Antergos installer (cnchi) has a hidden mode also which lets you chose some other unlisted desktop environment which is not generally available. Its for developer, but heck most of the rolling releases are, that never stopped us from trying them right. To use it quit the installer, open terminal and type “sudo cnchi -dvz” . Contact me if you enjoy it.
