COJ #58 - Deconstructing Alex Murdaugh 2.0: A Look at the World’s Most Bizarre Sentencing Hearing

True Sunlight Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — unpack Alex Murdaugh’s psychotic and bizarre performance at last week’s sentencing hearing for his financial crimes. Alex’s 50-minute statement to the court was a reminder of how this dangerous man was able to leverage his family’s power to steal from so many for so long. Also on the show, what it’s going to take to break down and rebuild South Carolina’s highly corrupt judicial system once and for all. And thank you to all the amazing fans who came out to The Co-Op Hillsboro Village in Nashville on Sunday. We had a blast - big shout out to Mandy the dog and her parents.  Even after almost five years of covering this man, we still find ourselves with jaws on the floor constantly learning that even when we think we’ve seen the worst of this murdering thief, he’s always ready to show us that he’s just getting started. Last week was also a difficult one for the South Carolina justice system. Not only did we have to deal with Alex’s sick 50-minute performance at the hearing, we learned that the Judicial Merit Selection Commission NOMINATED David Miller … the 2nd circuit assistant solicitor who made his name helping lawyer-legislators like Rep. Todd Rutherford and Sen. Brad Hutto strike dangerous and practically off-books deals for their clients. Like we say in today’s episode, we are at war and it’s time put sunlight on the JMSC the likes of which they’ve never seen before. Let’s get into it.... On this episode, Luna Shark Premium Members get a couple super exclusive tidbits from EB about what Dick and Jim did immediately after the sentencing and a scoop about what's next for Judge Newman. COJ #57 - Alex Murdaugh to Face His Financial Victims + Why Is Law Enforcement Focused on Becky Hill’s Son and Not the Stephen Smith Case?

True Sunlight Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — talk about what people can expect to see at Tuesday morning’s hearing for Alex Murdaugh, where he’ll be sentenced for his financial crimes. Also on the show, who cares what Alex ate for Thanksgiving Dinner? (Certainly none of us, but some media outlets can't seem to help themselves). Plus what’s going on with the oddly timed arrest of Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill’s son and a look at the latest in the Stephen Smith case... On today’s show, Liz, Eric and I break down what you can expect to see in the hearing. Plus, we look at a ”48 Hours” update on where SLED stands with Stephen Smith’s investigation — including where things are at getting Stephen’s text messages. Premium members will get a deeper look at the odd timing of SLED arresting Becky Hill’s son right before Thanksgiving and what we think is behind all of it.  Luna Shark Premium Members get access to searchable case files, written articles with documents, case photos, episode videos and exclusive live experiences with our hosts on lunasharkmedia.com, Discord and YouTube LIVE through Lunashark.supercast.com. CLICK HERE to learn more: https://bit.ly/3BdUtOE. COJ #56 - Alex Murdaugh’s Plea Deal: Is This Justice?

True Sunlight Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — unpack the last-minute plea deal struck in Alex Murdaugh’s financial cases, including what was happening behind the scenes leading up to it. Why did Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin suddenly agree to 27 years? What will their next move be? And what reassurance do we have that Alex Murdaugh will live the rest of his life behind bars? Liz, Eric and Mandy are usually in agreement when it comes to Team Murdaugh and interpreting the winners and losers in their strategies. But not this time. The biggest question on our minds after Alex Murdaugh’s decision last week to plead guilty to his financial crimes was this: IS. THIS. JUSTICE? Once again — someone with means and influence can — for all practical purchases — still buy his way out of the worst trouble. This plea deal — at its core — buys Alex more time and gives him more space to work on getting out of his other charges — the roadside shooting and drug trafficking charges. It’s a big deal and could open up a whole new door for Alex...  In addition to that, our premium listeners will get to hear our conversation about what we think Dick and Jim's next moves will be… and what can be done about that. For now, though, we're going to celebrate Thanksgiving with our closest friends and family. Thank you so much to ALL OF YOU for listening. Liz, Eric and Mandy so grateful to be able to have these conversations with you each week. And we are also so thankful for Eric Alan because we are getting back to his riveting mountain mystery this week on True Sunlight Podcast. Go back to True Sunlight episode 15 for a refresher as we’re playing Episode 2 this Thursday. COJ #55 - Team Murdaugh’s Jury-Tampering Lie Has Been Exposed + Are Certain Lawyers Untouchable?

The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office blasts Alex Murdaugh’s accusations of jury-tampering out of the water in an explosive new filing that leaves Team Murdaugh exposed. True Sunlight Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — discuss what’s next for the state prosecution and Judge Clifton Newman as Dick and Jim put it all on the line for a murderer. Plus, are some lawyers truly untouchable in the state of South Carolina? Also on the show, sexism and journalism and why it doesn’t look the way you might expect. We’re going to start today’s show off talking about what that looked like from Mandy and Liz’s perspective in the newsroom and why sexism doesn’t always play out the way you might expect it to. We think it’s so important to give voice to this stuff not only because it feels good to vent about it with y’all but because sometimes we think even our best allies don’t always know what it looks like when it’s happening. We also dive in deep with the state’s response last week to Team Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial and what we think will happen next. We especially get vocal about how Dick and Jim’s jury-tampering accusations are even more hollow than we thought they were. In addition to that, our premium listeners will get to hear our conversation about how Dick and Jim have misled the media and seem to be willfully misleading the court by leaving out the context … and what can be done about that. COJ #54 - The Worst Thing Team Murdaugh Has Done So Far + Judicial Hearing for Bowen Turner Prosecutor This Week

Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland discuss Dick and Jim’s latest attempt to blow up the system on behalf of Alex Murdaugh, the murderer, liar and thief.... and much more!  First, thank you to everyone who joined the Talk Shop Live virtual event on Monday - Jenny Fisher and Mandy sold out signed copies, but don’t worry if you missed it, we are adding a few more for anyone that could not make the live broadcast.  We have a really great episode for you today. We are angry. We are disgusted. And — though we disagree on some of the finer points on the effect of what’s happening. We’re going to be talking more about their judicial terrorism on True Sunlight this week, but for today we discussed the core effect of the Writ of Prohibition they filed late last week with the Supreme Court in their attempt to have Judge Clifton Newman removed from all of Alex Murdaugh’s cases moving forward. Also today we talk about a very important hearing this week — the hearing to qualify Prosecutor David Miller as a candidate for circuit court judge. David Miller is who cut that sweet deal for accused rapist Bowen Turner. That hearing is set for Wednesday at 3:45pm and we'll do our best to broadcast it, but we're learning that it might be held behind closed doors. We'll share all we can on social media and unpack it on True Sunlight this Thursday.  It’s important that every member of the JMSC know we’re watching. Let’s get into it. On the horizon, we hope that you consider attending some of these great in-person, virtual and hybrid events... check lunasharkmedia.com/events for the most current schedule.  USC event in Columbia, SC on Monday, November 13th - with special guests announced this week! COJ #53 - Who Has The Courage To Take on Alex Murdaugh’s Law Firm? + What Dick and Jim’s Latest Motion Might Tell Us About the Money

Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — discuss Alex Murdaugh’s latest motion to dismiss his appeal in the Satterfield case and what it might mean about how much money he ACTUALLY has. Plus Alex’s former law firm PMPED and Alex’s older brother Randy Murdaugh have officially put themselves in line with Alex’s victims. Also on the show, is it worth it to taxpayers to try Alex’s financial crimes separately? Before we get into, please accept our thanks for the hundreds that attended the two events this past weekend at the College of Charleston and The Co-op. It gave Mandy the boost of confidence needed as we’re 2 weeks out from Blood On Their Hands publication date of Blood on Their Hands. Now you can buy a signed from our Talk Shop LIVE sale on Monday November 6th at 7pm - click here now to snag your copy asap before they are gone! https://talkshop.live/watch/DN_X2D0UEt_t Now back to the show... we got to some really great — and IMPORTANT — discussions on today’s episode. Starting with Team Murdaugh’s seemingly strange dismissal of their Confession of Judgment appeal in the Satterfield case.  Also on the show we talk about PMPED’s and Randy Murdaugh’s gross and greedy decision to hop in line with Alex’s financial victims. Not only do their claims paint a clear picture for us on who these people are, it shows how little accountability they think they should have for Alex’s crimes. Plus, we discuss the case of a former Allendale councilman who pleaded guilty to raping a 12-year-old girl at a sleepover. The 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office struck a deal with him where he got to plead to a lesser charge, putting him in prison for TWO YEARS. Worse than that? The Solicitor’s Office made it a point to say that the victim consented to the deal.  Was justice served there?  All that and more... so let’s get into it... Luna Shark Premium Members are getting access to an exclusive conversation about potential plea options for Alex and early access to purchase a signed copy of Blood on Their Hands. Also despite telling a federal judge that they don’t plan to charge Alex a fee, Jim Griffin asks for more time to appeal a state judge’s decision denying their request for more of Alex’s money … to pay their fee. COJ #49 - Russell Laffitte Is FINALLY Behind Bars + How Is Alex Murdaugh Paying Dick and Jim?

Alex Murdaugh’s co-conspirator Russell Laffitte — the small-town banker who said he asked no questions about Alex’s scheme and who allowed Alex to use and abuse his family’s bank — has finally turned himself in to serve his seven-year federal prison sentence. Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — talk about what life will be like for Russell at what is basically a “bougee prison” for men who steal large amounts of money and defraud taxpayers. Also on the show the Good Guys subpoena Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin to find out just how much they’ve been making as they sell Alex’s story to Hollywood.  We also want to share some good news from Sandy Smith. Sandy and Mandy, along with Eric Bland had the opportunity to Join Vinnie Polatin on Court TV to announce that the Stephen Nicholas Smith Scholarship is now LIVE. You can learn more and donate at StephenSmithScholarship.com While Sandy still eagerly awaits any new information from SLED, she decided to take some of what is left over from the $130,000 exhumation and investigation fund, and create a Scholarship Fund in Stephen’s name.  Soak Up The Sun Premium Members will get a special pre-recorded happy hour with Sandy and Mandy with LIVE chat where we dive deeper into this topic and more on October 12th, but you can click the YouTube link below to see and hear Sandy’s request for support of this new fund. And there is still a $30,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whomever killed Stephen. If you know something… please… say something. Click here for Sandy's announcement of the Stephen Nicholas Smith Scholarship Fund: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6DH1tApmp0 On another serious note, South Carolina lost one of the Good Guys this week. Shockwaves rippled across South Carolina as we learned of Stanly Myers tragic passing. As a very close friend of Eric Bland's, we’d like to dedicate this episode to Stanley and his family. In the beginning of this episode, EB, describes how he’s going to remember his dear friend Stanley Myers. COJ #48 - Alex Murdaugh’s Latest Plot: Get Judge Clifton Newman Removed from His Case

Well, things keep getting crazier and crazier in the 'Land of No Consequences'. Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland discuss what happened at Alex Murdaugh’s federal plea hearing and how it’s just one step in a much larger plan. Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin seem to have one goal right now and that’s to get Alex moved to federal prison. There’s one person standing in their way: Judge Clifton Newman. On today’s episode we get into Alex’s federal plea hearing and how it’s just one step in his overall goal, which is likely to serve out his time in federal prison. Also on the show, we talk about how Cory Fleming is not as sorry as he seemed. Not only is Alex Murdaugh up to his usual trickery, but Cory Fleming — the man who has twice gone in front of a judge to cry about how remorseful he is and how undeserving he is of mercy — is already trying to get out of his state sentence. Anyway, we’re dedicating today’s episode to listener Trista from Mount Pleasant aka @tristathebarista on Instagram. Thank you so much, Trista, for spreading so much sunshine! The world needs more people as sweet and kind as you are. We now offer ad-free listening on Apple Podcast through a subscription to Luna Shark Plus on the Apple Podcasts App. And this episode is a bit longer for Luna Shark Premium Members who get an extra 45 minutes on Judge Gergel, a new documentary that you may or may not have seen, and what we hear went down at CrimeCon this past weekend. Luna Shark Premium Members also get access to searchable case files, written articles with documents, case photos, episode videos and exclusive live experiences with our hosts on lunasharkmedia.com, Discord and YouTube LIVE. CLICK HERE to learn more: https://bit.ly/3BdUtOE. COJ #47 - Judge Newman Isn’t Playing Games - Team Murdaugh Gets Knocked Down

Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — unpack the seven hours in hearings that were held last week for South Carolina’s “Unholy Trinity” Alex Murdaugh, Cory Fleming and Russell Laffitte. Judge Clifton Newman and S.C. Prosecutor Creighton Waters show the federal government that they’re not playing games. Plus will Alex go through with his plan to plead guilty in front of U.S. District Court Judge Richard Gergel now that he has a state trial date? Cory Fleming was sentenced to 10 years for the Satterfield heist and 10 years for what he did to Pamela Pinckney. He’ll ultimately serve less than 14 years for everything but this is still so much more than anyone thought he’d get … including Cory and his team. Alex Murdaugh was assigned his state court trial date, which interferes with his strategy of getting into federal prison. And the South Carolina Justice System made it CLEAR they weren’t playing the federal government’s games. Needless to say, Liz, Eric and Mandy could NOT WAIT to record this week’s episode because of how much there was to talk about.  Luna Shark Premium members get some special conversations about trends in criminal sentencing and the jury tampering in which EB has entered the fray on behalf of 4 jurors. Premium members get our full discussions about the topics and even more content on lunasharkmedia.com. COJ #46 - Dick and Jim Strike Again… But Will Their Scheme Work?

Attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin have gone even lower in their quest to get convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh a new trial. This time by blowing up the career of Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill. True Sunlight Podcast Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — discuss whether the accusations against Becky amount to jury-tampering, as well as the chances that one of Dick and Jim’s strategies might actually work. On today’s episode we break down Dick Harpootlian’s and Jim Griffin’s latest strategy — a motion for a new trial, which they’re basing on juror allegations that Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill tampered with the jury that found Alex guilty of murdering Maggie and Paul. We cover a lot of ground in this episode — including what a clerk of court does, what the accusations against Becky look like and whether we think this might be the one time Dick and Jim see a win. For premium members, we’ve included a conversation about what it was like working with Becky Hill during the murder trial last winter and our observations about her behavior. For enhanced episodes with additional content, virtual happy hours with our hosts, articles, documents and more, consider joining our Luna Shark Premium Membership community to help us SHINE THE SUNLIGHT! COJ #45 - Buster Murdaugh And The Latest Propaganda to Save A Family’s Reputation

Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland have a field day unpacking all the nonsense from The Fall of the House of Murdaugh, Fox Nation’s three-part series told from Alex Murdaugh’s and Buster Murdaugh’s perspectives. From Buster’s claims about worrying the “real killers” are still out there to Alex’s jailhouse diary to straight-up lies about what happened the night of the boat crash, the docu-series is yet another horrible idea from lawyers Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, who can’t seem to stop doubling-down. Last week was jam-packed with even more nonsense from the Murdaugh camp — both good and bad.  One good thing that came out of last week was that the South Carolina Department of Corrections announced its prosecution of Alex for violating two prison rules. One rule was broken when he read his so-called diary over the phone so Jim Griffin could record it and give it to Fox Nation. The second rule was broken when Alex used another inmate’s code to make phone calls. Anyway, obviously Liz, Eric and I had a lot to say about ALL of these things. Let’s get into it! COJ #44- Things Are (Finally) Getting Scary for Alex Murdaugh’s Co-Conspirators

Just when all hope seemed to be lost on the justice front, South Carolina prosecutor Creighton Waters comes to the rescue by NOT holding back in telling the Court how former attorney Cory Fleming helped his best friend, Alex Murdaugh, steal money. Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — break down what happened in the courtroom during Cory’s guilty plea last week, including how the mood shifted considerably when it became clear that Creighton wasn’t going to let Cory off the hook. COJ #35 - Ethics Of Jailhouse Calls and The REAL Update About Stephen Smith's Case

In today’s episode, True Sunlight Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell— and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland talk about Judge Carmen Mullen’s misguided recognition from the Innocence Project, whether inmate calls should be released to the public, misinformation in the Stephen Smith case and the latest updates in the investigation into his death. Eric, Liz and Mandy also talk about the issue of inmate privacy and whether releasing inmate calls represent an infringement of people’s rights and how it applies to a horrific case involving a fatal DUI in the Charleston, South Carolina area that left a bride dead and severely injured a groom. The couple was driving away from the happiest day in their lives when a 25-year-old woman, whose BAC was allegedly almost three times the legal limit, plowed into their golf cart. Later on in the show we dispel some misinformation that’s being reported in the Stephen Smith case and clarify what’s really going on there. Eric gives us some advice on how to avoid getting overcharged by your attorney. While Liz and I share some tips to get your case championed by reporters to get some well-needed sunshine…  Let's get into it! OH! COJ #34 - The Quest for Fame in the True Crime World

True Sunlight co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell— and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — unpack the latest developments in the many cases connected to South Carolina’s No. 1 Serial Criminal Alex Murdaugh. On today’s show, the three discuss Peacock’s latest hit “Based on a True Story”; the reaction to Bland Richter’s fiery response in the Satterfield case; and the significance of a profile highlighting the mystery of Buster Murdaugh. On today’s episode, Liz, Eric and I discuss Peacock’s new dark comedy, “Based on a True Story,” starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina.  We’re so thankful that Peacock is sponsoring Cup of Justice to get the word out about this new series. The show takes on the True Crime industry and imagines a world in which a couple — in a quest for fame and fortune — thinks creating a podcast with a serial killer is somehow their best option. COJ #33 - Big Little Fact-Checking: The Lies Keep Coming in the Murdaugh case

True Sunlight co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell— and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — talk about the latest fraud in the Lowcountry, what Al Capone has to do with the Murdaugh case and the very big punch Eric and his law partner are planning to lob back at Alex Murdaugh’s attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and JIm Griffin. On today’s episode, we started out by talking about a Beaufort woman who allegedly used Sandy Smith and her efforts to get answers about Stephen’s death as a way to defraud people out of money. It’s a really bizarre story but one that unfortunately has become familiar to us in the past two years with people attaching themselves to the Murdaugh case in self-serving ways. But also it reminded us of Alex Murdaugh himself. This woman was able to leverage her power and position in the community as a way to allegedly steal money that was meant to go to people in need or toward causes like Sandy’s. Liz and Mandy's former co-workers Delayna Earley and Mike McCombs investigated this case. You can read more about it on The Island News’ website.  Liz, Eric and Mandy tackle a number of topics today, including our continued concern over the federal government’s role in the Murdaugh case and whether it’s just a way to contain and manage any investigations into whatever it is that Alex and his co-conspirators were into in the Lowcountry. Also, Eric shared a bit a news about what he and his law partner plan to do next in their battle with Dick and Jim. COJ #32 - Cory Fleming Admits to Satterfield Heist, But What Does That Mean?

It’s been another week full of twists and turns in the Alex Murdaugh story. With each new development in this case, we’re getting to see the inner workings of the justice system and how it just simply works better for certain people. The first plea deal has been struck in Alex Murdaugh’s web of crime and corruption. Former attorney Cory Fleming, who was Murdaugh’s best friend — and godfather to Buster Murdaugh — has agreed to cooperate with the federal government and provide information in exchange for leniency. Murdaugh Murders Podcast hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — discuss the latest in the Murdaugh Murders saga, as well as how clients can protect themselves from lawyers like Alex and Cory. We’re asking people — specifically those who have had cases with PMPED and other related law firms — to request copies of their files and to CHECK their disbursement sheets and expense sheets to see if there’s anything questionable on there. COJ #30 - In a Broken System, Victims and Their Families Get Absolutely No Respect

Mandy Matney, Eric Bland and Liz Farrell talk about lessons learned at the recent victims’ rally in Columbia, South Carolina; the latest ruling against Alex Murdaugh and his attempts to take money away from victims; and the problems with legislator-attorneys. In today's episode we dive deeper into a topic that’s always on our mind: Victims' rights. And not just victims’ rights but how our Justice system treats victims across the board. Which is not good.  Over the past few years, we've heard story after story about how victims have been disregarded, not listened to and flat out ignored.  It’s disheartening and it needs to change.  Eric and Mandy were recently at the annual Victims Rally on the Statehouse steps. It was yet another reminder of how important it is that we all work together, make more noise about the things we see that are wrong and do everything we can to empower victims.  Without victim empowerment, the system doesn’t stand a chance at changing.  Now, let’s get into it … Find us on social media: Twitter.com/mandymatney - Twitter.com/elizfarrell - Twitter.com/theericbland https://www.facebook.com/cupofjustice/ YouTube Please consider sharing your support by leaving a review on Apple at the following link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cup-of-justice/id1668668400 *The views expressed on the Cup of Justice bonus episodes do not constitute legal advice. COJ #29 - Utter Disgrace: Alex Murdaugh and His Attorneys Go Even Lower with Latest Antics

Even from prison, convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh manages to further traumatize his victims. This time it’s the Satterfield family. On today’s episode of Cup of Justice we talk about one of the most upsetting things to have happened since Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in March. Murdaugh Murders Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — discuss Murdaugh’s admission that he lied about how Gloria Satterfield died and what that means, and what it DOESN’T mean, for the case. They also delve into male egotism, prison romance and why Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian might still be slumming it. Last week, Alex filed a response to the federal case that was filed against him by one of the two insurance companies in the settlement that was supposed to go to the Satterfield family — which totalled $4.3 million. In that filing he admitted to lying about the dogs tripping Gloria. The fallout from that was the suggestion that the Satterfield family might have to pay back the money they received as a result of Alex’s admitted legal malpractice and the alleged legal malpractice of the family’s attorney at the time, Alex’s best friend Cory Fleming. In other words, the solution to Alex’s admitted crime — in his and his supporters’ eyes — is for Nautilus to go after the family who was swindled by him. Because our co-host Eric Bland and his partner Ronnie Richter are the ones who helped the Satterfield family be made whole, you better believe Eric was fired up in this episode. There’s always something to talk about with him … let’s get into it! COJ #28 - Murderer on the Lam: It’s One Major Mess After Another in South Carolina

If there’s one thing we’ve all learned over the past two weeks it’s that South Carolina’s justice system is nowhere near fixed. Far too often, it seems like those in positions of power are choosing to do what’s good for them individually over what’s good for public safety. This is a theme that we noticed long before the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh and it’s a topic we will continue to tackle as we look to shine massive amounts of light into the darkest corners of this country, right where crime and corruption meet. So much drama has happened since we last talked. The state Supreme Court ordered Jeroid Price back to prison. Predictably, the “Godfather” of the Bloods gang in South Carolina failed to turn himself in after the state Supreme Court ordered him back to prison last week and remains on the run. This week, Mandy, Liz, & Eric and I discuss the latest in the Jeroid Price case and how — no matter how many times we point it out — the state’s justice system keeps on showing us just how little it thinks of victims. Now it’s everyone’s mess to clean up. And we have a lot to say about that. Let’s get into it... COJ #27: How Did This Happen? Latest Scandal Shows Just How Much Secrecy Exists in Judicial System

Happy Monday, y’all! We have always talked about the Murdaugh case in terms of “Monsters” being around every corner — meaning, that back when Liz and Mandy started reporting this case in 2019, it seemed like every new bit of information led to a monster. Another rabbit hole to go down. This week we were reminded that those monsters don’t just exist in the Murdaugh world. This week, we couldn’t wait to talk about the Jeroid Price case.  Price — a convicted murderer and alleged "godfather" of the SC bloods who was just starting year 20 of his 35-year sentence — hired a high-powered legislator-lawyer who was somehow able to broker a secret deal with a solicitor and a retiring judge that allowed for his early release. And it seems like they told no one about this … not the Department of Corrections, not law enforcement and, most importantly, not the victims, the family of Carl Smalls Jr. who was killed by Price in 2002.  Of course, right after we put our Cups Down on Thursday, more breaking news happened so this episode is a little longer than normal with an extra 30 minutes starting around the 52 minute mark.  Let’s get into it … Find us on social media: Twitter.com/mandymatney - Twitter.com/elizfarrell - Twitter.com/theericbland https://www.facebook.com/cupofjustice/ YouTube Please consider sharing your support by leaving a review on Apple at the following link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cup-of-justice/id1668668400 *The views expressed on the Cup of Justice bonus episodes do not constitute legal advice. Sheryl is not only a Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, she’s a big fan of fighting for what’s right and, much to our surprise when the trial ended, she has followed the Murdaugh case from the beginning.  Cups up, y’all! COJ #24: No Apologies: Stephen Smith Exhumation and What’s Next

Happy Monday, y’all. We have some really good news to share with you today. On Friday, the body of Stephen Smith was exhumed and taken to Florida for a second autopsy. His mother, Sandy, waited nearly eight years for this moment to come.  It was a very emotional day but also a peaceful one. Sandy could feel the love and knew her boy was in good hands. We want to again thank all of you who donated to Sandy’s GoFundMe. You helped make this happen and I feel confident that we are now well on our way to getting answers — whatever those answers may be. We also want to thank SLED Chief Mark Keel and every agent who took the time Friday to connect with Sandy, who kept everyone safe and protected during the exhumation and who accompanied Stephen’s body to the autopsy. And thank you too to forensic pathologist Dr. Michelle DuPre for your empathetic and professional approach. You put everyone at ease during a difficult time. This independent exhumation and autopsy were critical because of how the investigation into Stephen’s death was conducted and all the questions surrounding his case. The system had given Sandy no reason to trust in it. Investigators needed to start at Square One and this gets them there. These are just the first steps to finding out why Stephen Smith was found dead on a Hampton County road in 2015 but they are really good first steps. Liz, Eric and Mandy got together online Sunday morning to talk about how the exhumation went, the strange drama surrounding it and what comes next. We also found a little time to talk about the latest with Alex Murdaugh and his life in prison.  There was a lot to say, so let’s get into it … We all want to drink from the same Cup Of Justice — and it starts with learning about our legal system. COJ #23 Justice for Stephen Smith: We’re Finally Moving In the Right Direction

Well, y’all, this was a BIG week. Right after our last Cup of Justice episode was published, Eric’s law firm Bland Richter announced they will be representing Sandy Smith in her mission to finally get answers about Stephen’s death. Within a day of announcing this partnership, SLED chief Mark Keel called Eric and told him that his agency believes that Stephen was NOT hit by a car but rather was murdered and that SLED is devoting more resources to finding out who killed Stephen. I cannot express how emotional and bittersweet it has been this past week. I’m so happy for Sandy, Stephanie, the Smith family and everyone who knew and loved Stephen in that they finally have a fighting chance at getting some answers.  But this took FAR TOO LONG. No family should have to work this hard to get law enforcement to acknowledge the truth about how their loved one died.  Now that we’re here, though, we’re ready to see some much-deserved JUSTICE for Stephen Smith. So lets get into it... We'd like to thank Better Help for sponsoring this episode. And a big shout out to Rabia and Ellyn Solve the Case - Mandy recently sat down with this amazing duo and we'll be sharing parts of that interview with the COJ audience soon.  We all want to drink from the same Cup Of Justice — and it starts with learning about our legal system. COJ #22: Getting Answers about Stephen Smith’s Murder and How to Solve Cold Cases

In BREAKING NEWS - Eric Bland and Ronnie Richter have been retained by Sandy Smith to help her get Justice for Stephen. Mandy joins Sandy and Eric in a press Conference today, Monday March 20th at 8:30am on the Bland Richter Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/blandrichter  Now that Alex Murdaugh will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murders of Maggie and Paul, it’s time to put the focus on getting answers in the Stephen Smith case. For almost eight years, Sandy Smith has fought to get answers about her son’s murder. Whether or not Alex Murdaugh had anything to do with Stephen Smith’s death, the Murdaugh name is connected to the case in some way. Our greatest hope right now is that the momentum from the murder trial and the powerhouse duo of Bland & Richter encourages people to come out of the shadows to finally speak up and say what they know about Stephen’s murder in 2015. In this episode, we talk about the reasoning behind the exhumation and how private exhumations work. Smith's family believes he was murdered, and they want an unbiased look at his body and an accurate determination of his cause of death based on facts. At the date of this release the Go Fund Me has raised over $61,000.  We also catch up on Russell Laffitte’s attempt to use Alex Murdaugh’s witness stand exoneration as grounds for a new trial. And we take a look at ways community members can help get answers in cold cases. Murdaugh Murders Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — talk about the next steps in the Smith case and how people can get answers in cases that have gone cold. We all want to drink from the same Cup Of Justice — and it starts with learning about our legal system. What questions do y’all have for us? COJ #21: Randy Murdaugh Hits the Reset Button and Russell Laffitte Has Bills to Pay

One week after Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life for killing his wife and son, Murdaugh Murders Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — take a look at the questions surrounding a juror’s connections to a witness, the problems with the judicial selection process in South Carolina and the need for reform and Russell Laffitte’s overdue bills. It’s been over a week since Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to two consecutive life terms for killing his wife and son, and there hasn’t been a break in the news. On Monday, federal Judge Richard Gergel denied Russell Laffitte’s motion for a new trial. Now his case moves to the appeals phase, which Russell will go through without the help of his original attorneys Bart Daniel and Matt Austin because on Thursday Bart and Matt filed a motion to dump Russell. Apparently Alex’s co-conspirator hasn’t paid the balance of his legal bill at Nelson Mullins. According to our amazing co-host Eric Bland, Russell will be sentenced in May or June of this year and, after reading Judge Gergel’s scathing order Monday, we’re all expecting he’ll receive a significant punishment.  We have a really interesting show for you today. We talked about the unwarranted criticism surrounding James the Juror and his connection to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, Dick Harpootlian’s Good Ole Boy fragility and the need for judicial reform in this state. Cup of Justice 11: Days of Bowing at the Altar of the Good Ole Boys Are Over

*Originally Published As Bonus to Murdaugh Murders Podcast, December 2022. In this first part of a two-part episode, Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland talk about the suspicious circumstances surrounding Alex Murdaugh’s one big case as a lead prosecutor; the untouchable “retired” judges who are reluctant to give up the power (and money) that come with the black robes; and the time Eric had to go to Circuit City to buy something to place at the altar of Dick Harpootlian. As we revisit the ONE CASE Alex tried as a lead prosecutor — the Emmanuel Buckner case in 2019 - we talk in depth about that in episode 73 of Murdaugh Murders Podcast. If you haven’t listened to that one yet, we recommend you start there. We also got some really good perspective from Eric on what it is really like out there for young attorneys in South Carolina who weren’t born with the last name Murdaugh. *Originally Published As Bonus to Murdaugh Murders Podcast, December 2022. After hosting another spirited live-chat of Alex Murdaugh’s latest pretrial hearing in the double-murder case, Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland break down the most interesting — and most irritating — moments of Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin’s efforts to shape the narrative surrounding the state’s evidence against Alex.
