Richard Ashley Hamilton joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner to discuss the newest graphic novel he's written: Tectiv. Richard is an award-winning Cuban-American screenwriter and author. Working with artist Marco Matrone, Tectiv tells the story of Bingo Finder, the only literate person in a far future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. After Bingo's friend disappears, Bingo turns to the books she loves to solve the mystery of her friend's disappearance. Part noir, part dystopian sci-fi adventure, and all beautifully rendered. Jimmy chats with Daniel Kibblesmith to talk about comics and Daniel's fascinating career. Daniel, once considered "The Clown Prince of Groupon" according to the headline in an Intelligencer article, went from senior marketing copywriter there to writing for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. As someone from the disability community, I’m often let down by how our community is portrayed in comics and it is rare to see our struggle reflected accurately. A month or two ago on social media that shall not be named, I saw screenwriter Peter Warren talking about his new comics project The Tin Can Society dropping right now from Image Comics on Rick Remender’s Giant Generator Imprint, where he’s using a sensitivity reader to help with the portrayal of the main protagonist tech mogul and superhero Johnny Moore. It has become common for writers to enlist a little help to make sure they are sensitive to the challenges of different marginalized groups, something I’m wholeheartedly in favor of, so I reached out to Peter and sensitivity reader Gianna Marie to hear more about this unique type of collaboration and what exactly it entails. You are in for a treat today because I have writer Tananarive Due on the podcast with me to chat about her new Image Comics project Moon Dogs. It's a brand new Cryptid Creator Corner! Jimmy had a chance to chat with both Archie Bongiovanni and Mary Verhoeven about their new graphic novel being published by Maverick, an imprint of Mad Cave Studios: Teleportation and Other Luxuries. So here we have yet another outstanding Maverick original graphic novel, after recently chatting with Jeremy Whitley, the writer of Navigating With You. The title of TaOL immediately drew me to it, and I was not disappointed in the story or the art. Mary packs so much into every panel, be it emotion, information, or jokes. I loved hearing Archie talk about how they came up with all the techno-babble. It adds a fun element to this story. It's not all fun though, this book really serves up the dangers of certain mega corporations and how they treat their workers, which I think is too close to the truth to be satire. I'm delighted to introduce first time guest, Jeff Morris, on the show with me today to talk about his new crowdfunding project, True Believer, a collection of three short comics about his journey through grief. Each story draws inspiration from his personal experiences with loss and is bound to make you cry. I know personally, grief is a weird thing. I’ve had to deal with more than my fair share of it recently learning to come to grips with the loss of who I was with my disability. Identity is such a fragile thing and the exploration of grief is something I typically avoid because it channels as a downer but these stories do not, they all plot a clear path through it in very different ways. I met Jeremy Whitley at this year's Baltimore Comic-Con and picked up a copy of Navigating With You at the Mad Cave Studios booth. I had read a few things Jeremy had written and was excited to dig into this new graphic novel published by Maverick, a Mad Cave imprint. On today's episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner we're getting in the Halloween spirit with horror writer J. Michael Donohue. Since I started this comics journalism journey, I've been lucky enough to meet some truly amazing people. One of those is comics writer and fellow native East Tennessean Dakota Brown. We were trying to figure out what to do to celebrate Halloween on the podcast and fortuitously Dark Horse marketing reached out and asked if we had anything planned. Bryan and I have been Comics Twitter friends for some time now, so it was incredibly exciting to have him on the podcast to discuss his first series Milk Run being published through Scout Comics. More than any other episode in our 275 plus now, this one hits home for me and is the most personal version of me you are likely ever to get on the show. I don't often dip back much and reminisce about my time in the music business. I'm a don't look back type of guy, but I couldn't resist on today's show sharing an anecdote or three because this project is all about music. When the first volume of Survival Street came out, I hadn't seen anything like it on shelves and it ended up immediately being one of my picks for the first annual Comic Book Yeti ICE or Indy Comics Excellence Awards in 2022. I'm joined today by newcomer on the show Max Hoven. I was first introduced to his work a few years ago with It Eats What Feeds It and Max is back at it again with the same creative team, co-writer and friend Aaron Crow and artist Gabriel Iumazark, with a fantastic cyberpunk horror project called Liquid Kill which has been described as Ghost In The Shell meets John Wick. As one comic ends another begins! Shane Connery Volk is on the Cryptid Creator Corner today to discuss the end of Nottingham and the beginning of Prairie Gods: Race the Devil, which hits your local comic shop on September 4th. I’m always excited about getting to talk to comics creators about their projects but today I’m ecstatic. Not only do I get returning guest Pornsak Pichetshote back on the show, who is one of the nicest people in the medium, but it’s a double treat to get to introduce artist Terry Dodson on as well. They have an amazing project dropping soon called the Horizon Experiment: The Manchurian with Image Comics. This will be the opening salvo of a series of five one shot projects, designed as something akin to a tv pilot, each featuring original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons. Pornsak is co-editing the series with industry veteran Will Dennis (check out my interview with Will here) and the plan is to host all of them on the show if calendars and lives cooperate over the next five months before their release to give you a rounded flavor profile of all the cool eccentricity the Horizon Experiment has to offer. This book is fantastic. I love a big swing and often lament creators not having the opportunity to take them. Pornsak has not only crafted a great story here, but he's also providing the platform for other creators to take their own swings as well with the other Horizon Experiment books dropping soon. Today I’m joined by comics writer Joe Casey. One of my favorite people in the comics business returns to the show today, Ryan Claytor.
