Episode 19: Numbers, Notes & Taxes with Matt Green of Ledger Medial
In this episode of "Confessions from the Home Office," Matt Green, owner of Ledger Medial Accounting, is my guest!
Matt transitioned from pursuing music in Nashville to returning home and deciding to pursue accounting in 2012, eventually obtaining his bachelor's degree, MBA and enrolled agents license. After working at a CPA firm for a few years, he launched his own virtual accounting practice in November 2020, Ledger Medial, serving clients across the United States.
Matt offers critical advice for business owners, emphasizing three key strategies:
1. Understanding the emotional relationship with cash
2. Recognizing both income and expenses, and
3. Maintaining simple, clear business structures.
He recommends entrepreneurs set up an LLC, obtain an EIN, create a separate business bank account, and avoid commingling personal and business funds.
When it comes to hiring, Green suggests seeking referrals, checking references, developing clear training processes, and being quick to make personnel changes if someone isn't working out.
We also talked about tax preparation. Matt advises using a tax return checklist, providing requested documents without overthinking, and engaging with tax professionals proactively throughout the year. He highlights an upcoming requirement for Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) filings, noting that businesses with 20% ownership or substantial control must file by year-end.
Matt's firm, Ledger Media, offers comprehensive accounting services including tax preparation, LLC registration, and financial consulting, serving clients virtually and committed to helping businesses understand their financial health.
