The second book in the Austen Chronicles series out in October, 2023. Original work (his and others) fortnightly on the podcast Sonic Salon. SummaryTonya led a discussion on banned books with guests Brenna Thummler, Veronica Klash, and Tony Farina. They explored the importance of reading banned books, the fear often underlying attempts to ban them, and the need for ongoing conversations about these issues. The book under discussion was "This One Summer" by Mariko and Jillian Tamaki. The group also discussed the accessibility of books in schools and libraries and the impact of banning books on readers. Brenna expressed concern about parents restricting their children's access to books, suggesting a warning system to inform parents about book content. Veronica, Tonya, Brenna, and A.R. discussed the influence of literature on children and the concept of the "slippery slope" in relation to book banning. The discussion ended with Tonya noting a pattern in the themes that get books banned, prompting reflection on societal progress. The group also discussed the shifting power structures in society and the resistance to progress. They touched on the importance of reading books that may be considered offensive, as they offer the opportunity for empathy and understanding. The conversation also delved into the challenges of writing about mental health in literature and the responsibility of writers to educate themselves to avoid unintentionally using offensive statements. Veronica and Tonya emphasized the importance of anti-racist practices, including actively doing the work to avoid offense, rather than relying solely on intentions. "This One Summer", a graphic novel published in 2014 is a coming-of-age story, won several prestigious awards including an Eisner award and an Ignatz award. Brenna first discovered it in a thrift store in 2015 and was drawn to it due to its beautiful illustrations. The book influenced her to work on her first graphic novel, "Anne of Green Gables.” A.R. was one of the first to receive an advance reader copy (ARC) of "This One Summer" from Net Galley, and after reading it, he's been a fan ever since. Veronica was also attracted to the graphic novel format, as it was a type of literature she enjoyed in her childhood. Banned Books Week! Day 3: The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini

Banned Books Conversations: Where Radical Readers Discuss Prohibited Prose - join Tonya Todd and her guests as they delve into banned books! Banned books are works that have been removed from a library shelf or school curriculum. Over the course of Banned Books Week, this series will cover seven different books, the reasons they were banned, and the value in reading them. Host: Tonya Todd (@MsTonyaTodd & http://mstonyatodd.com) Video producer: JP ButlerAudio producer: Ria CarroganGraphics: Mike Burton Guest panellists Sherry Rosenthal: Professor of English at the College of Southern Nevada. She's working on a novel and is the author of nonfiction books, short stories, poems, & essays. Books on amazon; contact about panels [email protected] Ria Carrogan: Communications professional by day, the rest of the time podcast producer of Femme On. The podcast at Femmeon.show, Instagram @femmeoncollective Amanda Skenandore: Author of 4 historical novels, soon to be 5 and is a registered nurse. Find her at Amandaskenandore.com Episode Summary: Tonya hosted a lively discussion with Sherry Rosenthal, Ria Carrogan, and Amanda Skenandore about 'The Kite Runner.' Sherry said she didn't expect this sort of censorship to take root in the United States. In the past it was an idea that never seemed to happen. Books that offended her include titles by Ayn Rand, and Machiavelli but she would never support banning them, because as awful as anything might be to some, who is to be the arbiter? Ria finds the reasons for the banned books fascinating, mainly that they are rarely what she predicted. The vocal minority is dangerous and many of their reasons seem unethical. Banning means closing the discussion and when ideas are not talked out they can become dangerous. She feels that by banning books, you are deleting history. Ria breaks her own rule for diet books. Amanda is often surprised at the books on the banned lists, particularly this one, The Kite Runner. She is offended by casual racism in some books, but although she doesn't personally enjoy reading it, it is important to preserve these books in other times for how things were. We should not be banning any books because we need to keep them in the conversation. All three panelists enjoyed the conversation and agreed that The Kite Runner is an important book to read. Amanda added that reading it now gives us an opportunity to examine the twenty years we spent in Afghanistan and how we left them. Banned Books Week! Day 2: Nineteen Minutes By Jodi Picoult

Banned Books Conversations: Where Radical Readers Discuss Prohibited Prose - Join Tonya Todd and her guests every day this week as they celebrate banned books! Banned books are works that have been removed from a library shelf or school curriculum. Over the course of Banned Books Week, this series will cover seven different books, the reasons they were banned, and the value in reading them. Host: Tonya Todd (@MsTonyaTodd & http://mstonyatodd.com)Video producer: JP ButlerAudio producer: Ria CarroganGraphics: Mike Burton Episode summary: Tonya hosted a discussion with Lisa Rayne, Gregory Kompes, and Heather Young. The conversation centered around the book 'Nineteen Minutes' by Jodi Picoult. The participants expressed their views on the importance of free access to literature, particularly in educational and public settings. Concerns were raised about the increasing polarization in society and the silencing of opposing viewpoints. Guest panelists: Lisa Rayne: Teacher, writer, and former lawyer, Princeton alum. Lisarayne.com for books including Never Cross a Highlander featuring the first Black Highlander in romance. Scribal coaching authors how manage the business side of being an author. https://www.facebook.com/groups/scribal Gregory Kompes: Writer in many genres and university teacher and student. Sosheslays.com and their newest podcast So She Slays Presents The Hangover, unfiltered and unapologetic discussions about our adult struggles, dating, pop culture, and social faux pas, and hopefully, you will have a good laugh. Gregory doesn't usually like to read about violence himself and he expected the ban to be due to violence and bullying content, or even that it could be a template for a student bent on revenge. He was surprised to learn that the ban was due to a one-page sex scene. Lisa expressed her passion for literature and the importance of free access to it, particularly in educational and public settings. She is confounded by people's unwillingness to face reality and have good conversations about issues, especially when those conversations may save student lives. She also expressed her objections to certain classic literary works due to their portrayal of racism and the white savior complex. Tonya brought up an article/interview from the author Jodi Picoult, who says that she thinks often her books are banned just because others of her books are banned or because one person objects to something—like one mention of genitalia and then others jump on the band wagon but they don't actually read the book. The banning snowballs into something big based on nothing. Heather shared her love for reading that developed after discovering the ability to visualize stories. She mentioned that by not having these conversations about difficult or painful subjects we are missing the chance to help kids think through grey areas. This year's first episode is 'All Boys Aren't Blue' by George M. Johnson. They discussed their views on banned books, with Brandon emphasizing the importance of freedom to read. They also talked about the need for reader advisories to caution about potentially triggering or misinformative content. The team did not reach a clear conclusion on the matter. They also discussed the pattern of themes in book banning and the implications it has for society. Blake and Brandon discussed the target audience of a book they had been reading. Blake believed the book was written for a young adult market, particularly focusing on the college experience and the exploration of identity. Brandon agreed and added that the book, which deals with themes of gender and sexuality, could be particularly beneficial to young adults coming to terms with their own queerness or transness. Star Wars: Ahsoka Part 7 Dreams And Madness: Is This Show’s Sole Purpose To Bring Thrawn Back? Plus Action Scenes Interrupting Dialogue, Baylan Is Amazing & Ezra’s Interesting Return, With Angry Andy

Our discussion on Ahsoka continues with the penultimate episode of the series; Part 7: Dreams And Madness! Mike is joined by Angry Andy and their conversation begins with Andy’s thoughts on the series so far, before delving into Hera & The New Republic, Sabine, Baylan Soll & Shin Hati’s paths, Thrawn, Ezra and more! In more detail, the duo inadvertently are quite critical of the show, as they start with surface-level issues but end up pulling threads that lead to more & more questions, including; do Ahsoka’s actions have any impact on the outcome of this show’s plot (aka bringing Thrawn back)? Do Ezra’s actions make sense or do they just to prevent him being too overpowered? Can any character with a name die? Why is Baylan so interesting while Morgan Elsbeth is so dull? Is this show just a prologue to an upcoming movie? Mike & Andy ask these questions and more! TV & Movie Reviews: Doctor Mordrid (1992)

TV & Movie Reviews: Doctor Mordrid (1992) After a long stretch of time off from the TV&Movies, we're Chris and Dave are back to tackle the totally-not-ripped-off-Doctor-Strange movie, "Doctor Mordrid". This 1992 film is like a magical cocktail mixed with a hint of Marvel confusion and a splash of supernatural sorcery. It's as if Doctor Strange decided to take a vacation but got stuck in copyright limbo and had to go by a different name. Picture this: You've got Jeffrey Combs, who's basically the lovechild of Sherlock Holmes and Merlin, playing Doctor Mordrid. He's like your friendly neighborhood sorcerer, but with an impressive collection of mystical artifacts instead of web shooters. Now, let's meet Kabal, our villain. He's got that classic bad guy look with the evil laugh to match. He's trying to bring chaos and darkness to the world, but he probably missed the memo that says "no capes," because he's rocking some serious villain attire. But wait, here's the twist – "Doctor Mordrid" wasn't allowed to throw the Marvel name around, so they had to get creative with their own sorcerer-in-chief. It's like they had to change his name from "Steve Magicpants" at the last minute. The film's got mystical battles, sorcery showdowns, and more spells than a Harry Potter marathon. It's a low-budget, straight-to-video extravaganza that's part superhero flick, part fantasy, and all-around charming in its B-movie glory. So, buckle up for a magical mystery tour with "Doctor Mordrid," where mystical artifacts, cheesy effects, and a dash of confusion combine to create a cult classic that's pure enchantment... or something like that. Plot Summary: Doctor Mordrid is like if Doctor Strange decided to take a break from saving the world and started moonlighting as a magical landlord. Meet Doctor Mordrid, the sorcerer-next-door who's here to fix mystical plumbing issues and keep supernatural pests in check. He's like the ultimate tenant, but instead of paying rent, he's battling ancient evil and taking out the magical trash. Think of him as the Martha Stewart of the mystical realm – he's got spells for redecorating and warding off interdimensional pests. But wait, trouble's brewing in the mystical condo complex! Kabal, the neighborhood villain, is trying to unleash chaos. It's like the equivalent of a bad neighbor cranking up their stereo at 3 a.m. but with more fireballs and dark magic. Doctor Mordrid doesn't just use a plunger; he's armed with spells, incantations, and a cape that rivals Batman's. And yes, he probably has a magical "no soliciting" sign somewhere. In a world where sorcery meets suburbia, get ready for a rollercoaster of supernatural shenanigans, magical mishaps, and the most enchanting eviction notice you've ever seen. "Doctor Mordrid" – because every neighborhood needs a sorcerer on speed dial! www.twitter.com/comicsinmotionp [email protected]

Comics On Trial: Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull – Does It Fit In With The Original 3?

After 2 years, Comics On Trial is back with a bang (or a whip?) – each episode sees members of the Comics In Motion family take up on opposite sides of a geek battle! With Dial Of Destiny coming out, we decided to tackle the fourth instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise; Kingdom of The Crystal Skull! Mandatory Music and CD: The Real Thing by Faith No More

The Real Thing Review by Ned Raggett [-] Starting with the careening "From Out of Nowhere" driven by Roddy Bottum's doomy, energetic keyboards, Faith No More rebounded excellently on The Real Thing after Chuck Mosley's was fired. Given that the band had nearly finished recording the music and Mike Patton was a last minute recruit, he adjusts to the proceedings well. His insane, wide-ranging musical interests would have to wait for the next album for their proper integration, but the band already showed enough of that to make it an inspired combination. Bottum, in particular, remains the wild card, coloring Jim Martin's nuclear-strength riffs and the Bill Gould/Mike Bordin rhythm slams with everything from quirky hooks to pristine synth sheen. It's not quite early Brian Eno-joins-Led Zeppelin-and-Funkadelic, but it's closer than one might think, based on the nutty lounge vibes of "Edge of the World" and the Arabic melodies and feedback of "Woodpeckers from Mars." "Falling to Pieces," a fractured anthem with a delicious delivery from Patton, should have been a bigger single that it was, while "Surprise! You're Dead!" and the title track stuff riffs down the listener's throat. The best-known song remains the appropriately titled "Epic," which lives up to its name, from the bombastic opening to the concluding piano and the crunching, stomping funk metal in between. The inclusion of a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" amusingly backfired on the band -- at the time, Sabbath's hipness level was nonexistent, making it a great screw-you to the supposed cutting-edge types. However, all the metalheads took the song to heart so much that, as a result, the quintet dropped it from their sets to play "Easy" by the Commodores instead!
