This week Mike is doing another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era; A Test Of Courage by Justina Ireland! Although the book is aimed at “middle-school” readers, this is a book that will appeal to all ages due to the writing, characters and themes throughout. In more detail, for the first half of the episode, Mike gives a bit of information on the other releases for The High Republic (the first two waves within Phase 1) and then delves into his spoiler-free review; primarily providing information from the blurb and within the first few pages; talking about the book’s themes and what he enjoyed about it. In the second half, Mike provides more details on the characters within the story and gives examples on how the book’s themes work so well with the story being told, which falls into light-spoiler territory. He gives plenty of warning before delving into his more detailed review, so you can listen to as little or as much info about AToC before picking it up yourself – Mike ends the review with a spoiler-free overview of the first 3 High Republic books and talking about where they fit chronologically with the comics & other High Republic content A Test Of Courage is from Phase 1, Wave 1 of The High Republic, also in Wave 1 is Light Of The Jedi and Into The Dark. Phase 1, Wave 2 includes The Rising Storm, Out Of The Shadows and Race To Crashpoint Tower. A Test Of Courage was released January 5th 2021 by Justina Ireland. TV & Movie Reviews: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) This week it's the first Freaky Friday!!! That's where Chris and Dave are replaced as hosts and this week we have the talented Tony, JAC and Ria taking the reigns to review the 1992 movie, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Way before Sarah Michelle Gellar took the role, it was Kristy Swanson playing Buffy and starring alongside Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, Rutger Hauer and Luke Perry. Plot Summary: Buffy Summers (Kristy Swanson) has the lifestyle any young woman could want. Cheerleading, dating the Captain of the basketball team, and copious amounts of time spent shopping with friends. She had no idea of her true calling until a mysterious man named Merrick (Donald Sutherland) approached her and told her that she is the Slayer; one woman called to defend the world from vampires. Reluctant to concede to the fact, Buffy soon learns that Merrick speaks the truth and so begins to take her new life seriously while trying to maintain the sense of normality her life had once been. With her best friends slowly abandoning her, Buffy finds solace in the town outcast, Pike (Luke Perry), who knows very well the terrors that have arisen. Chris and Dave go back to 2016 for this movie directed by the Russo brothers and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd and Daniel Brühl. Plot Summary: With many people fearing the actions of superheroes, the government decides to push for the Hero Registration Act, a law that limits a hero's actions. This results in a division in The Avengers. Iron Man stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed, but Captain America feels that saving the world is daring enough and that they cannot rely on the government to protect the world. Mike embarks on the final Star Wars comics written by Kieron Gillen; The Scourging Of Shu-Torun! These comics include another appearance by Queen Trios, as well as The Partisans (Saw Gerrera’s Rebel extremists), Tunga; the shapeshifting clawdite, infiltration, destruction and the death-worshipping Cult Of The Central Isotoper! In the last 10 minutes of this recording, Mike talks about the new Comics In Motion Book Club, what’s coming over the next few weeks of SWCIC, recent guest spots & other suchlike. This arc is set around 1 ABY (1 year after A New Hope, 2 years before Empire Strikes Back). All issues were written by Kieron Gillen, with Guru eFX as colour artist and Angel Unzueta as artist on issues 63-67, with Andrea Broccardo as artist on issue 62. TV & Movie Reviews: Darkman (1990) The guys go back to 1990 and review the Sam Raimi character - Dark Man starring Liam Neeson. A reviewers dream movie but does it stand up 31 years later? Plot Summary: Peyton Westlake is a scientist who has discovered a way to produce synthetic skin. This could revolutionise skin grafting, except for one minor glitch; the synthetic skin degrades after 100 minutes of exposure to light. When gangsters attack Peyton, he is horrifically burnt, and assumed dead. This week, Mike embarks on the penultimate Doctor Aphra story-arc from the 2016 run; The Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon! In addition to detailing what this superweapon is, these issues give backstory to Aphra’s relationship with her mother and shows a huge amount of trickery & madness (as standard with Aphra), plus Mike gives information on RA-7 protocol droids, Gigorans, some of the artifacts in the Empire’s Gallery Of Peace and more of the connecting tissue between this story & the rest of the Star Wars universe! At the end of this episode Mike gives information on next week’s episode, War Of The Bounty Hunters, as well as what you can expect from SWCIC over the coming months. These comics are set between A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back, after all 2015 Vader comics.
