How to forgive yourself (with Josh Harris)
SHOW DESCRIPTION: Curiosity is so important because challenging your beliefs is how the mind-brain connection is structured to work, which is neuroplasticity. So we should be constantly looking at ourselves deeply, really thinking about the why behind what we believe, say, and do, and working on questioning this and growing- this is mind management in action. So, when you find something is wrong with the beliefs you have held for so long, and that has basically defined you, how do you find the strength and direction to make these changes, how do you forgive yourself and not let the shame and guilt destroy you, how do deal with the loss of friends and family when you change. In today’s podcast, I talk with Josh Harris, former pastor and unpublished author of the book about purity culture, How to Kiss Dating Goodbye, about exactly this- and about the 100% change he made in his life. Just a note to the listeners, we experienced some tech issues toward the end of this podcast, so you might notice a shift in audio quality.💡OFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS: -Neurohacker: If you’re in your late 20’s or older, adding Qualia Senolytic to your diet can play a CRUCIAL role in combating negative aging symptoms. The one thing to never say when setting boundaries
Pre-order my new book HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD CLEAN UP THEIR MENTAL MESS here: https://www.mentallyresilientkids.com +Pre-order before August 8 to get access to bonus content! SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about the importance of teaching your child about boundaries. This is part 2 of my series on parenting, boundaries, and mental health. Part one can be found here.Whenever you, as a parent or caregiver, set a boundary, make sure that you always explain why in a way that your child will understand. Use the moment to model healthy boundaries for your child and teach them what a healthy boundary looks like, using language that encourages your child to think about the situation and what it means. Avoid using language that shuts them down such as saying “because I said so”, which will make the boundary feel more like a punishment than a teaching opportunity. How to teach your kids about boundaries
This is part 1 of a 2-part series on parenting, boundaries, and mental health. From the moment children are born, they are tied to their environment and the people within their environment. They are born into a community which they both shape and are shaped by. A child’s identity is closely tied to their community – their family, friends, and other acquaintances. Children develop a sense of who they are in relation to who they are with. This has both a huge potential for growth and connection and a huge potential for harm, which is why teaching your child how to have healthy relationships from a young age is so important for their mental and physical wellbeing. SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk to Alicia, a concerned mother, about helping sensitive children manage their emotions. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health. This was Alicia’s question:“How do I help a sensitive seven-year-old move on after they make a mistake? I have a very sensitive seven year old girl. She likes to follow the rules. However, she does from time to time need some course correction. When I do so, she instantly withdraws, and becomes very quiet and sad, often for a long amount of time. I have a hunch that she’s beating herself up about whatever mistake she made, and I would love some help figuring out how to help her receive correction without being so hard on herself.”Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-to-help-sensitive-children-manage-their-emotionsSign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleafOFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:-Chime: Start building your credit up. What I learned about parenting from watching Ted Lasso
Pre-order my new book HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD CLEAN UP THEIR MENTAL MESS here: https://www.mentallyresilientkids.com/+Pre-order before August 8 to get access to bonus content! SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about embracing “messy” parenting. This is part 2 of my series on parenting. You can listen to part 1 here. As I mentioned in part 1, it’s ok to be a “messy” parent. We need to normalize, not stigmatize, messy parenting. This means embracing our feelings and mistakes and learning from them, using them to grow and learn as parents. It means using our own struggles to help our children understand how to manage the “messiness” and challenges of life through example and open communication. Indeed, one of the best ways we can teach our children how to manage their mental health is by modeling how we deal with life’s difficulties, including how we parent them and how we embrace, process and manage our own mistakes. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health. This was Oyindamola’s question: “Why does my preschooler (4 years and 5 months) tend to cry at a range of issues which seem understandable e.g. stubbing his toe or spilling a meal to others less so such as, his nanny leaving before he could say bye, water touching his face during a shower (despite the fact this is part of the process every morning)? It could be said that these examples have in common a perceived lack of agency but they seem to vary in magnitude quite a lot. We try various things: listening to the issue in his own words, asking him to take deep breaths, acknowledging his feelings, and asking him to proffer solutions but sometimes it just doesn't seem to work.” Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/teaching-kids-how-to-understand-navigate-emotions-feelings-thoughtsSign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleafOFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:-Qualia Senolytic: If you’re in your late 20’s or older, adding Qualia Senolytic to your diet can play a CRUCIAL role in combating negative aging symptoms. Pre-order my new book HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD CLEAN UP THEIR MENTAL MESS here: https://www.mentallyresilientkids.com/+Pre-order before August 8 to get access to bonus content! SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about something great you can do with your children this summer: getting outside! This is part of my summer series on brain-building activities you can do with your children to help them build up their mental resilience and manage their mental health while having fun.We all know that getting outside is great for our mental wellbeing. Just think of how you feel when you go for a walk in the sunshine or spend time reading at the beach. Nature has a way of calming us down mentally and physically. The same is true for our children. Playing outside is one of the best things they can do to boost their mental and physical wellbeing. This may seem obvious, but consider that the average American child spends 4-7 minutes a day in unstructured play outdoors and over 7 hours in front of a screen. This is a cause for concern, as research shows that that children should play outside for around 2-3 hours, or at minimum 20 minutes, a day for optimal mental and physical development. As much as modern technology has improved our lives, it should not replace the act of enjoying the outdoors and what nature has to offer. I personally have been through extensive brain rewiring and parent accordingly to help my kids overcome toxic thought loops. However my 8 year old loops more often than not and is incredibly spiritually sensitive and is very empathic. I really believe her migraines are stress induced as they almost always follow a tough day at school, being bullied, or when she has had a day of high and happy emotions. While I try to implement as many calming and mind-management strategies as possible, I find myself completely exhausted and burned out as a result of trying to do the deeper mental work with her to help her stay mentally healthy and build resilience to and through tough emotional days. Podcast 482: Can we be too self-aware?
Download my new and improved brain detox app here: https://neurocycle.appSHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about self-awareness, why it is helpful, and what happens when we become too self-aware. As you have heard me say many times on this podcast, we need to self-regulate what we think, say and do. This is key to living a life of mind management and learning how to deal with the many ups and downs of life. However, it is possible to be too self-aware. This happens when we start trying to intellectualize away our feelings and emotions rather than learning from them. We have to feel so we can heal—trying to rationalize away how we experience life can be as harmful as suppressing or ignoring uncomfortable emotions.
