Covenantal Corporate Culture (Interview w/ Russ Crosson)
On this episode, Russ Crosson shares how he and the leaders at Blue Trust cultivate a covenantal culture in their company as they share Bible-based financial guidance with their clients. Russ Crosson is chief mission officer and senior partner of Blue Trust. Russ was hired in 1980 as the second employee of Blue Trust. Prior to his current position, Russ served as president and CEO of Blue Trust (2002 – 2017). From 1999 – 2002, Russ served as executive director of the National Christian Foundation (NCF). Russ is the author of several books including Your Life Well Spent, The Truth About Money Lies, What Makes a Leader Great, Your Money Made Simple, and Leverage. He has also been a featured speaker in many venues. Russ graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in mathematics and a master’s degree in education. Russ and Julie live in Roswell, Georgia. Flower Company Mentoring At-Risk Youth (Interview w/ Quilen Blackwell)
On this episode, Quilen Blackwell shares how he’s using a sustainable flower farm, shop, and delivery company to mentor at-risk youth. Quilen Blackwell is the cofounder of the Chicago EcoHouse and Southside Blooms, organizations dedicated to eliminating poverty through sustainability. He’s the grandson of Arkansas sharecroppers who moved to Milwaukee so his grandfather could secure a factory job in the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement when racial tensions were high. After earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Blackwell went on to serve in the Peace Corps in Thailand. When he returned to the United States, he enrolled in a Chicago ministry school where God led him to commit to a life of community service. He began by tutoring high school students in Englewood, where he saw the devastating impacts of inner-city poverty. Eventually he and his partner (now wife), Hannah Bonham Blackwell founded the Chicago Eco House to transform blighted urban lots into sustainable flower farms. That grew into Southside Blooms, which provides jobs on these farms and in a flower shop to at-risk youth. Jason is a former Executive Director of the Society for Business Ethics, an international association of business ethics scholars, and received that organization’s Presidential Award for Service in 2023. Jason’s research is on religious ethics in organizations, moral imagination, and the application of Christian theological concepts in business ethics. His calling to the management academy is informed by his desire to forge and share insights into faithfulness and ethics that he wishes he had during his consulting career. About 50 percent of all company earnings are donated immediately to charity. The remaining 50 percent is used to grow the business, and in 2007, they gave the entire company to National Christian Foundation. Though they still run its daily operations, the brothers will never reap its accrued value; they keep none of it. Alan and his wife, Katherine, have six children and reside in Tennessee.
