The Road From Incarceration to Entrepreneurship is lined with Popcorn - Toronto - Canada’s Podcast
Emily O’Brien is the founder of Comeback Snacks popcorn company. It all started when she went to prison. Before, Emily was an entrepreneur and social media professional, having created her own firm at a young age and enjoyed great success. Regrettably, addiction caused her to make some poor choices that culminated in a four-year jail term.
As her sentence began, Emily made it her mission to transform herself, get clean, and make a positive difference during her term. "I didn’t know how I’d make a difference at the time," says Emily, "but I knew I would find something I cared about that would benefit from a purpose-driven facelift."
Thus, Comeback Snacks (formerly known as Cons and Kernels)was born.
Upon her release, Emily made a decision to start a popcorn company that used high quality, health-conscious ingredients to create unique flavours inspired by the ones she found in prison. A fun, self-deprecating brand that would also help remove the stigma around people who had prior convictions and provide newly-released offenders with the chance at a fresh start through training, empowerment, and education.

Get great on the areas of life you’re most passionate about - Vancouver - Canada’s Podcast
Growing up John Krik's dad was a pitchman. You could see him slicing and dicing at the country fairs, PNE or home shows throughout Canada. That business grew from shows to television or products being sold on television and then mass distribution in major retail stores like Walmart. John has followed in his father’s footsteps. He’s developed several products that have gone from concept to millions in sales all based out of his home office in Surrey, BC. This is where he conceives the products, brings them to consumer shows, proves the salability, develops a pitch and from there brings it to mass distribution via direct response television.

Competition Bureau – June 22, 2023, new legal provisions come into force
The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency that protects and promotes competition for the benefit of Canadian consumers and businesses. Competition drives lower prices and innovation while fueling economic growth.
The Competition Bureau works to support and protect Canadians by fostering a competitive and innovative marketplace. They do this using various methods, including advocacy, outreach, consultations, partnerships, and enforcement.
In June 2022, the Government of Canada made changes to the Competition Act, including adding subsection 45(1.1) to the existing criminal conspiracy provisions. This new subsection protects competition in labour markets by prohibiting agreements between employers to fix wages and restrict job mobility. Like agreements between competitors related to price-fixing, market allocation and output restrictions, wage-fixing and no-poaching agreements undermine competition and the efficient allocation of resources. Maintaining and encouraging competition among employers results in higher wages and salaries, as well as better benefits and employment opportunities for employees.
Today we’re meeting with Majid Charania, Director of Compliance. The unit is responsible for promoting compliance with the Competition Act and today we’re going to discuss a new section of the law that prohibits wage fixing and no poaching agreements.

Become an entrepreneur for the right reasons because it’s not an easy ride - Toronto - Canada’s Podcast
Two Canadian entrepreneurs, Tyler Dyck, Co-Founder & COO, and Brandon Goode Co-Founder & CEO, have partnered with global leaders in the mental health space to solve a growing issue in Canada. Despite the increasing ubiquity of antidepressants, their use cases, treatment durations, and side effects are widely misunderstood. The drugs have undoubtedly helped many Canadians facing anxiety and depression (candidly, including myself), but a sharp rise in long-term use (treatment guidelines say they are only supposed to be used for six-to-nine months!) has led to a growing problem: people don’t know how to get off of them safely—and no one is talking about it.
When Tyler Dyck decided he wanted to discontinue his antidepressants after years of treatment, he was met with a lack of information and resources surrounding withdrawal and ended up yo-yo-ing, much to the detriment of his mental and physical health. He found a major gap in recommendations he was receiving from doctors, psychiatrists, and psychologists, and chatted about this with his former colleague Brandon Goode, whose background in the healthcare space had him investigating similar issues. They quickly realized that there was no existing solution to a major issue more and more of their loved ones were facing.
Together with world-leading scientists and healthcare professionals, they created Outro Health, the first patient-focused, science-based off-ramp for antidepressants, which just launched in Canada. Outro’s user-friendly platform provides science-based, personalized tapering plans to slowly reduce medication dosage. It also provides proactive symptom monitoring, one-on-one chats and video appointments with practitioners trained specifically in safely stopping antidepressants, and a patient-first approach that minimizes the risk of relapse and maximizes the chance of successful tapering.

Founder and Head Designer at MARNIE & MICHAEL, Jennifer St. John, has been involved in art and design since her earliest days. In 2020, Jennifer launched her business, along with a mission to start a mental health initiative and began a retail shop during the peak of the pandemic, taking a risk that has paid off. "No entrepreneur does it by themselves. Every day, I speak to entrepreneurs about their businesses, and analyze and report on dozens of companies for thousands of people. I've noticed a pattern: what makes the basic building blocks of a successful business.
"I also know that entrepreneurship is a difficult, and often lonely endeavour. The best way to find solutions for your business is to talk to other entrepreneurs for insight and unique perspectives. But it's hard to find those people to talk to when you are working so hard.
"That's why I've decided to create a community to share advice, ideas and insights from experts, as well as the things I've learned from decades of studying successful businesses. Join us today to get the help you need to take your business to the next level."

Supporting Staff for Success - Vancouver - Canada’s Podcast
Tammie Hunter was raised on Vancouver Island and as an adult lived in several communities around BC before settling in Nanaimo near her family. After exploring a few careers, she discovered later in life that being an entrepreneur is the most rewarding and engaging. She often says she wishes she had known what being a business owner was like earlier on in life.
As an artist she has had a very successful career selling her art in several galleries and art shows over the past 20 years. Since she started LegArt Apparel her art has taken a backseat. But she’s itching to get back into her studio to continue her lifelong dream of being a serious artist.
Tammie started LegArt Apparel in 2014. Since then, it has grown to be one of the top apparel companies in Canada in its particular style of clothing, mainly leggings. The company has grown from the original box of 100 pairs of leggings in the basement to over 4,000 pieces of inventory in a large warehouse and storefront in Nanaimo.
After almost 10 years in the industry, Tammie has gained much experience, having learned mostly through trial and error what it takes to be successful in the apparel industry. Through many ups and downs, hard work both mentally and physically, and learning with a team of dedicated employees and mentors she feels it's time to implement an exit plan that will set her successor up for further success. The next three years will bring new challenges but she is up for it!

When vision and finance unite: great things can happen - Vancouver - Canada’s Podcast
Born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., Serge Biln entered the workforce with a job in the mail department at a banking institution. From here, he swiftly rose to the executive level, eventually culminating in the position of vice president at Canadian Western Bank.
After a rewarding career in finance, Serge ventured into the community pharmacy retail space. He built and opened his first Pharmasave in 2005, followed by six new locations, and two years on the board.
Serge’s serial entrepreneurial spirit kicked in once again when cannabis became legal in Canada. In 2019 he co-founded Inspired Cannabis with his cousin, Jesse, creating a family-run, independent cannabis retail business. Since launching its first location in Courtenay, Inspired Cannabis has grown to 16 stores nationwide, with its most recent flagship location on Robson Street in Vancouver.
Adopting a unique approach to traditional cannabis retailing, Inspired Cannabis recently introduced the House of Brands, an interactive gallery experience in its flagship store. Here, customers can experience Canada’s top brands like never before with pop-up greenhouses, product showcases and other interactive elements that promote much-needed education in this emerging industry.
With further growth expected in 2023, Inspired Cannabis launched an online store and delivery service, connecting customers across the Lower Mainland with a range of products that can be delivered to their doorstep between 9am-11pm daily. Inspired Cannabis’s 16 stores include seven locations in BC, two in Saskatchewan and seven in Ontario. Additional store openings will be announced in the coming months.
