Cassandra Mcneil Owner of Sapphire23 Jewelry| Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 70

How Sapphire23 came to be a jewelry & lifestyle company was pretty organic. We are a family owned, mother- daughter duo. Cassandra (mother) is an HR Professional by day & inspiring entrepreneur by 5:01pm. My style is simple, neat with amazing color combos. I have always enjoyed adding beautiful, unique accessories to really accentuate my natural look & eccentric personality. Madison Rose (Daughter) loves ballet & unicorns with dreams of becoming a scientist. She dresses to comfort with sweatshirts, leggings/shorts, sneakers or flip flops. However she loves rainbows, sparkly, dainty colored jewelry such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces and hair bows.    The name Sapphire23 comes from our birth month September. The 23 is in remembrance of my sister Latoya’s born day September 23rd. Latoya passed away in December 2011. I made a personal commitment to keep her memory alive with each opportunity we create.   Two years ago, we came up with the idea to start a business creating hair bows. We purchased the items to create the hair bows. However, we never took the time to start the business.  Some time later, I came up with the name Sapphire23. My Mom (Momo) agreed the business name is perfect for our jewelry business. Then out of the blue, COVID19 happened and everything shut/slow down. We were home for work and school. Our busy, hectic schedules changed to work and school at home only. This allowed for the actual creation of Sapphire23! 0 Comments SORT BY Add a public comment...

DJ Montay Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 68

DJ Montay Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 68

Artists all over the country know that if they want to secure a mega hit, all they have to do is contact super-producer DJ Montay. Montay Humphrey exploded with back to back Top 10 hits in 2008 alone. His most successful claim to fame is producing the number one smash hit "Low" by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain. "Low" stood at the number one spot for 10 weeks on the Billboard singles chart, and was one of the biggest songs of 2008, with 450,000 digital downloads in one week and earning two Grammy nominations. It also helped Montay secure a Producer of the Year nomination at the Ozone Awards as well as several BMI music awards. "Low" has topped every chart including: iTunes, Billboard’s Top Digital download, Billboard Pop singles, Billboard Top R&B/ Rap singles, Billboard Top Rap singles, and countless others. This single features an instantly recognizable bangin’ beat, a signature T-Pain hook and a hot, lyrical flow from Flo Rida.  Describing how the song broke nationwide, DJ Montay said, "It started with DJ Khaled in Miami and I was playing it here in the ATL, and it took off from there." By 2006 DJ Montay assembled an impressive list of production credits, but it was the smash hit single "Walk it Out," produced for fellow Oomp Camp member Unk, that solidified him as a household name. The song started on the radio in Atlanta in early 2006 and then eventually took off, peaking at number one on the Billboard R&B singles. It instantly became a club classic that had people running to dance floors all across America. The DJ Montay- produced remix, which featured Andre 3000, Unk, Jim Jones and Big Boi, became an instant hit in its own right as a digital download favorite. Shortly after the breakthrough success, DJ Montay delivered another club banger "2 Step," the follow- up single from Unk's debut album "Beat’n Down Yo Block" distributed by Koch Entertainment. Its booming bass drops and unique melody reached the Billboard Top Five. And as with any other DJ Montay-produced hit, the remix featured appearances from big names like T-Pain, Jim Jones and E-40. Incredibly, "Walk it Out" and "2 Step" have generated over 2 million ringtone purchases combined.  Not one to rest, DJ Montay produced "Who the F#k is that" by Konvict Music/ Jive Records late artist Dolla featuring Akon & T-Pain. He also produced "I’d Rather" for the Academy Award-winning group Three 6 Mafia and "Creepin" by Chamillionaire featuring Ludacris. His credits also include Ice Cube's "It is What it Is" off of his "I Am the West" album, "Twisted" by Gorilla Zoe featuring Lil Jon and the irresponsibly catchy "Everybody Drunk" off of Ludacris' "Battle of the Sexes" album. In addition he produced the hit record "Foolish" for Atlanta-bred rapper Shawty Lo and songs for the Ying Yang Twins, DJ Kay Slay and Sheek Louch from the Lox. His newer production credits include rapper T.I.’s “Can You Learn” off his “Trouble Man” album featuring R. Kelly, Lil Jon’s “Pop that P**$y” and a track for Memphis rapper 8 Ball. Montay has assembled a production discography that can’t be messed with. His latest hits include “Mainstream Ratchet” and “So We Can Live” by 2 Chainz and “Money Can’t Buy” by Ne-Yo featuring Young Jeezy. He’s also responsible for producing popular songs like “Up Down” (Remix) by T-Pain, “Geronimo” by Clinton Sparks and “Mexico” by Cash Out. DJ Montay has firmly established himself as one of the top producers in the country and his musical resume continues to grow. He’s the product of hard work and –even though he’s already achieved so much- he’s still in the studio six days a week.  With his relentless work ethic, you never know whose hit he might produce next."I’m trying to be versatile- not just ATL projects. You never know what to expect –R&B, Pop, Rap, the list goes on.

Willie Macc of BET College Hill Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 62

Willie Macc  has quickly come a long way as a member of young black hollywood since first becoming known to a national television audience as the funny man on BET's extremely popular College Hill Virgin Islands in the Spring of 2007. He has become one of the few Reality TV stars to make the transition from Reality TV to that of a working actor in Hollywood. Willie Macc's big screen break came with his appearance in the 2008 comedy spoof "Meet the Spartans" where he played a "Yo Mama" joke cracking opponent of the Spartan army. In his second film, "House Arrest", Willie Macc co-stars as the Chris Tucker like side-kick in the "Friday" like direct to home entertainment comedy. Cited as a "modern day Eddie Murphy", Willie Macc continues his destiny to stardom with two additional roles, one being in the action / comedy, "Chicago Pulaski Jones" (written by and starring Kel Mitchel of the "Kenan & Kel" show, and includes a directorial debut by Cedric the Entertainer), and the other being "The Greatest Song" (a wonderful romantic comedy starring Lamman Rucker of Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married" and "Meet the Browns", and national comedian and TV Host, Joe Clair). He can also soon be seen on the small screen in a recurring role in the upcoming television show, "Friends and Lovers: Ski Trip 2". Both an actor and comedian, Willie Macc made his first professional stand-up comedy debut at the famous BB Kings at Universal Walk in Los Angeles on July 31, 2007. He continues to hone his comic skills by performing stand-up comedy routines in and around Los Angeles for both teen and adult audiences. A lover of sketch comedy in particular, he has developed a sketch comedy TV pilot with Barry Floyd (Tee Tee from BETs The Game) and Jonathan Kite (Oleg from Two Broke Girls)

Mad Skillz Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 54

Mad Skillz Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 54

Venerable Richmond, Virginia rapper Skillz is the hip hop head’s hip hop head. He's the guy who spun on cardboard as a kid, sprayed graffiti, and deejayed by connecting his mother’s turntables together. Never in a million years would he think that years later he would become an in-demand songwriter, producer, artist & deejay. Born in Detroit, Shaqwan Lewis, otherwise known as "Skillz" spent time in Fayetteville, North Carolina before landing in Richmond, Virginia. There he attended high school, where he soaked up all the Rakim, Kool Moe Dee, Run-DMC and anything he could get his hands on. “I’ve been a fan of hip hop since day one,” he says. “It always seemed like it was speaking to me directly.” He was a standout English student, honing his rap skills and enrolling in talent shows all over town. Answering an ad in the back of The Source magazine in the mid-90s, he sent in a one minute acapella rap, and won an opportunity to perform at the New Music Seminar in New York City. He finished second in a freestyle competition and drew the attention of Atlantic Records, who quickly signed him.His 1996 debut, From Where???, which some labeled an underground classic made his name and talents known throughout the hip hop world while his partnership with Atlantic eventually dissolved. Skillz (then known as Mad Skillz) eventually turned to writing raps for others. Before long he was introduced to soon-to-be rap potentate, Timbaland, through their mutual acquaintance Magoo, and Skillz signed with Timbaland’s label. Though nothing would come of the deal, he appeared on albums like, Tim’s Bio and Indecent Proposal, and toured with Missy Elliott in addition to acting as her hype man. Perhaps most importantly, his fellow-Virginian collaborators showed him how to compose a great song. “Before, it was just me rapping – a battle rap, and then maybe a hook,” he says. “But through Missy and Timbaland, I started paying attention to songwriting.” He next signed to underground label Rawkus Records, where he released his classic track, Ghostwriter, detailing his experiences secretly penning tracks for more-famous artists. Turns out he had become a ghostwriter by accident; a fellow DJ heard him recording one day, and said he’d like to use Skillz’s hook and beat for another MC. Eventually, he came to be known as a first-rate lyrical gun-for-hire, and went on to write songs for Diddy and Will Smith. And those are just the artists he’ll name. “A good ghostwriter never reveals all his clients,” he notes, adding: “I’ve definitely made a lot more money on songs that I've  written for bigger artists, than for myself. Sometimes it makes sense for me to sell a record rather than hold onto it.”  He just released his New Podcast  Hip-Hop Confessions

Tracey Lee Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 53

Tracey Lee Interview | Bess Conversations Podcast | Episode 53

After graduating from Howard University with a degree in Communications, Tracey Lee inked a recording deal with Bystorm/Universal Records under which he released a solo album entitled, Many Facez (1997). This album included the hit single, The Theme (It’s Party Time), which settled on Billboard’s Top 100 for thirty-seven weeks.  He had the opportunity to collaborate with award-winning artists such as the Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes, and Kanye West. Some of Tracey's performances and appearances included BET Rap City: The Basement, BET Teen Summit, Keenan Ivory Wayans Show, and HBO Original Series: ARLI$$. Tracey's whirlwind music industry experience prompted him to earn a Juris Doctorate Degree from Southern University Law Center making Tracey the 1st former major label hip-hop artist to earn the abbreviation Esq. behind his name. Some of his clients include Eric Roberson (Grammy-Nominated R&B Singer/Songwriter), Invisible Productions (for Kelly Rowland, Solange Knowles and Kobe Bryant), and DJ Young Guru (Tour DJ & Engineer for Jay-Z). In 2014, Tracey returned to the music scene as an independent artist under the LLeft Entertainmentlabel that he owns with his wife, Lori Nelson Lee. To date, he has released 3 major projects; ESQ. The Revelation, with appearances by DJ Young Guru, Eric Roberson, and Algebra Blessett, Expect The Unexpected, which received rave reviews from some of music industry's top DJs, and his most recent release, Glory, which is already being revered as Tracey's magnum opus for his ability to so poetically capture the strife of a major societal shift, (Covid-19, Quarantine, Police Brutality, and Civil Unrest), and turn it into pure art. Glory is a product of the now and the way forward on a landscape cultivated entirely by the production of super producer, Ojizz. Fall of 2016, Tracey joined the faculty staff of Coppin State University as an adjunct professor teaching The Business of Music to aspiring artist, and he gave a presentation on Contracts, Copyrights & Performing Rights Societies at the Music Industry Symposium for Singers and Musicians in St. Lucia. Currently, Tracey sits on the Governor's Board for The Recording Academy Washington, DC Chapter, and is a member of Black Entertainment and Sports Law Association (BESLA), American Bar Association (ABA), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). https://www.traceyleemusic.com

Happy Memorial Day GUYS!!!!!   Hope y'all enjoying the interviews got another good one today..  "Lil' Rick" a.k.a. "Ricky Ruckus" was born in Washington, DC on September 18, 1983. He moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1996. He earned the name "Lil' Rick" from his father Big Rick, and the name "Ricky Ruckus" because of his furious rapping method. His masterful mic skills and "in your face" attitude come from the many battles that this young rapper faced as a challenger. Ricky Ruckus became serious about rapping while attending high school. At the same time, DJ’s took notice and started giving him radio coverage -- DJ’s like “DJ Ceasefire” (Shadyville/102 Jamz/http://www.102jamz.com/). With the increased radio coverage, came challenges from other rappers, which only helped provoked him to hone his skills even more. With radio coverage, his name skyrocketed and he became well known in North Carolina and some parts of Virginia. It allowed him to open shows for Jay-Z, 3-6 Mafia, Mike Jones, Slim thug, The Game, Juelz Santana, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Juvenile, U.T.P, Franchise Boys, etc.....  Now a days you can find Ricky working in his own studio he runs Rucko Media..
