First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Featured Topic: Are You Exercising Too Hard? In this week’s interview, I speak with Dr. Phil Maffetone, an endurance expert and someone who developed many of the protocols used today in aerobic training, including the Maffetone Method. Dr. Phil Maffetone is described as “one of the most sought-after endurance coaches in the world.” He entered the endurance sports scene in the late 70’s. In addition to working with some of the world’s top endurance athletes, Dr. Maffetone has written dozens of books and articles on health, fitness and nutrition, including The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing and In Fitness and In Health. During our interview, Dr. Maffetone discusses: -using heart rate variability to track whether you are training too hard -using aerobic testing to track whether you are training too hard -what to do if you find out you are training too hard -how to know if you are overtrained -and much more! One tool Dr. Maffetone mentions during our interview, is the ithlete app for measuring heart rate variability. --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Prior to asking your question, PLEASE be considerate and do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. 90% of the questions we receive have already been asked and answered here at BenGreenfieldFitness.com! ====================================== [contact-form-7 id="6222" title="Ask Ben"] ====================================== Craig has a call-in question about how to organize your gear when you are training. Dave asks: What's your opinion on Intravenous Vitamin Therapy, like a Meyer’s Cocktail? Is it an effective alternative for an athlete to do instead of taking 10-20 pills a day?  Should it as a one time deal to get your levels back to normal or more of a maintenance thing? I think it would be extreme for a healthy athlete to get an IV once a week forever. Kassidy asks: I was diagnosed with PCOS a year ago and my doctor prescribed Orthotricyclen so it would regulate my hormones. I was very low in progestin, estrogen and the FSH hormone. I am sure there are others but those are the hormones that my doctor mentioned are the most important. I’ve become more health conscious since then but I am now figuring out that putting synthetic hormones into my body probably isn’t the best way to treat my PCOS. I’m 23 years old and I would eventually like to have kids so I want to treat my body well so that I can live a long healthy life as well has have children. I just did what my doctor told me to, but now that I have more knowledge I’m questioning what I should do. Do you have any advice as to what supplements, diet, exercise, lifestyle habits, etc. that I should change? John asks: What is the deal with VDOT and the Jack Daniels training method? As I understand it, you train your running to a pace and not necessarily heart rate or perceived effort.  I have calculated my VDOT and  paces and the paces seem slow to me, especially the interval pace.  Is this method worthwhile?  Do you use or others you know use it?  Are the suggested training volumes correct? In my response to John, I mention this VDot Calculator   Mike asks: My question is related to exercising and giving blood. I am 53 years old, a larger runner (~215 - 6'1") and normally run marathons to mid distance ultras (albeit now nearer the back of the pack) and was working my mileage back up after 9 months of struggling with injuries and inconsistent running. I thought I was starting to make good progress and then I gave blood. I have given blood for 35 years so I thought I was used to the effects but I did the double red blood cell donation and it seemed to set back my stamina more than I remember. I know I can't give blood for 16 weeks, twice the normal 8 week period and I get that the red blood cells carry oxygen but I was still surprised that after 2 weeks it seemed to still be effecting me. The first week was really a struggle, week 2 was better but not normal. So I guess my question is, is this normal and how long does it take for the stamina to return after giving blood and is there any positive effect from exercising while my red blood cells regenerate? Matt asks: What are your thoughts on Smart Balance Peanut Butter?   Do you think this is a better choice than regular Smucker's Natural PB? Anonymous asks: I was listening to an episode of Endurance Planet in which you were a guest. You talked about how many people unintentionally over train for races and that there was no reason to do a 20 mile run 10 weeks out from a marathon. I am following a marathon training program that has me doing just that. What type of marathon training program do you reccommend? In my response to anonymous, I mentioned Marathon Dominator. Jim asks: You mentioned on the last podcast you are spending a significant amount of time lately in the sauna to prepare for the 70.3 world championships.  I plan on doing the same thing to prepare for Kona in 5 weeks.  What do you recommend in terms of frequency and amount of time to spend in the sauna as the race gets closer? Darren asks: I wanted to ask three questions: 1) I had been building up my mileage from zero. I didn't run very far but I made the stupid mistake of pushing my pace beyond my bodies ability and ended up injuring myself. I'm going in for surgery on Thursday for cartilage damage.  That won't knock me back but I wanted to ask am I mad getting into Triathlons after one ACL reconstruction and then this surgery on my other knee? 2) What kind of supplements would you recommend for someone with a history of bad knees who is trying to get into triathlons 3) Your BulletProof Knee knee programme is designed for people with an IT Band injury.  Would this be beneficial for people with other types of knee injuries? Finally, listener Luke has a call-in question about Triathlon Dominator and Bulletproof Knee programs. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! My only issue with it seems to be the increased risk of injury...especially with running. How would you suggest keeping the risk of injury low while still going hard? Scott asks: Have you heard of Whole Body Vibration? Thoughts? Is it safe? Chuck asks: Last week I had an impedance test done. I'm sure you know what it is, but they connect electric pads to you ankle and wrist and an electric current is sent between. Based on the time it takes, it measures your body fat, water, cell health, and water in your cells. The problem is, I don't recall what each of these measure, but for someone in great shape and very healthy, some of my ranges we low? Can you talk a little about this and why I may be low? Here were my results: Body fat: 2.9% Resistance: 404.0 ohms Reactance (Xc): 37.8 (I don't have the ranges, but I think this was one of the level she told me was low) Impedance (Z): 406.7 (Impedance (symbol Z) is a measure of the overall opposition of a circuit to current, in other words: how much the circuit impedes the flow of current. It is like resistance, but it also takes into account the effects of capacitance and inductance. Impedance is measured in ohms, symbol) Phase Angle (like overall health of cell): 5.3 degrees. This was low- which is weird--why? Lance Armstrong's is about 12.0 Craig asks: I have found ice baths after a run work for me. However, when it is really hot outside I have trouble getting them cold enough (54-59 degrees). What I do now is run the water and then put 8 trays of ice plus all the ice my ice-maker has made since my last run in the tub. This doesn't get it cold enough. I know that I could buy a bag of ice from the grocery store but this is not very convenient. On the other hand, do you know of something I could buy that would be something I could just keep on hand? In my response to Craig, I mention this Blitz 110% post. Matthew asks: Is there any natural glycolic acid or AHA peels you recommend for mildly acne prone skin? I took your recommendation to eat sardines and I feel that this is helping my skin, but I still could use a good method to help remove dead skin from my sensitive face. Peter asks: Looking for your thoughts on S.A.D. seasonal affective disorder, winter blues, weight gain around holidays, etc... Laura asks: Have you heard of the ARP wave clinic? I have arthritis in my knee and was considering this therapy after exhausting many modalities up to this point. What are your thoughts? David asks: A company named JD Premium has put out a product names Adapt Energy that can be added to water or taken directly to help with energy and concentration. I have heard you talk about the advantages of some adaptogens in past podcasts. Based on the products contents, are these adaptogens? Are the ingredients harmful in any way? In my response to David, I mention this podcast with Roger Drummer. Shawn has a call-in question about cyclocross and how to increase his ability to move up to the next level. Robert asks: I have what I call "congenital inflexibility" I’ve now been into triathlons for about 2 years, becoming an endurance athlete for the first time in my life, and I’m really enjoying it. However, I do feel that my speed gains are being greatly limited by my inflexibility. For instance, in the swim I cannot stretch my arms straight past my ears. In the bike I am limited in my aero position, etc. I do some limited before and after stretching now, but I also know there are very mixed results in studies in whether stretching before or after exercise is actually helpful (at least in preventing injuries). In addition, I feel that whenever I spend too much effort stretching, attempt yoga, etc I am twice as likely to hurt myself. I am really worried that my inflexibility is going to hold me back, particularly in the swim. Do you think it's possible for someone who is totally inflexible to ever become reasonably flexible? In my response to Robert, I mention Resistance Stretching with Dara Torres. Brock asks: I get quite a lot of bloating and gas about an hour after I do a long or intense swim workout. I assume it is from gulping in too much air while I swim. Is there anyway to work on eliminating this issue? Are there any drills you can recommend that could help with this. It uncomfortable for me... and everyone around me. John asks: I swam 40 X 50 yard laps in an outdoor heated pool today and threw up. I had a piece of toast 1/2 hour before swimming, felt fine. I did not swallow a significant amount of chlorinated water during the swim. I was feeling fit and fine before and during the swim. Any comments? Jon asks: The other day I did some hard 800 meter repeats and I had some foamy sweat below the waist. Have you ever heard of this and what is it? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Nora Gedgaudas is Board-certified in Holistic Nutrition® through the National Association of Nutritional Professionals (NANP) and is recognized by the Nutritional Therapy Association as a Certified Nutritional Therapist (CNT). She has appeared as a guest lecturer on radio and television. She was host of her own top rated radio program on Voice America Radio’s “Health and Wellness” channel and her Primal Body Primal Mindbook is a highly recommended read. She maintains a private practice in Portland, Oregon as both a Certified Nutritional Therapist (CNT) and a Board-certified Clinical Neurofeedback Specialist (CNS). During my interview with Nora, we discuss... Why do some people crave carbohydrates? What type of methods are most effective for reducing carbohydrate cravings? How does biofeedback work for carb cravings? What can someone expect if they were going to try biofeedback for something like a craving, or a lifestyle or diet change? Is biofeedback something someone would need to continue your entire life? In my interview with Nora, she mentions her article: The Whacky, Wild and Misleading World Of Neurotransmitter Testing, and also references EEGDirectory.com for finding a neurofeedback practitioner. --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Prior to asking your question, PLEASE be considerate and do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. 90% of the questions we receive have already been asked and answered here at BenGreenfieldFitness.com! ====================================== [contact-form-7 id="6222" title="Ask Ben"] ====================================== Chris asks: I experimented with severe carb restriction a few times (veggies only carb source), and always experience equilibrium loss within a few days until I started eating carbs again. What's the deal with that? Christine asks: Is instant coffee safe? I try to avoid processed foods and drinks and have often wondered if the process of making instant coffee is safe or not. Don asks: My real question concerns training versus sleep for older "athletes". I am a 64 year old truck driver with highly irregular schedule. I've been doing sprint duathlons for about 5 years, and am trying to work up to international distance du's (10k run, 40k bike, 5k run). Currently i'm able to train 4.5hrs average. Would it be better to add training instead of sleep on days when i am physically tired, go the weekend warrior route, or forget the longer events. Cindy asks: I have a road bike and a tri bike. I ride the tri bike for racing and long rides and the road bike for group rides. Are there any disadvantages to doing all my winter indoor rides on just my road bike and leaving my tri bike until the weather is nice in the spring? Joe asks: I read somewhere that intense exercise "...produces high levels of adrenal steroid hormones that cause a testosterone deficiency..." Is this true? If it is true, then doesn't a diet high in caffeine, a known adrenal stimulant, cause testosterone deficiency as well? In other words, are hard workouts and my energy drinks both a contributing factor to my "Man-Boobs?" In my response to Joe, I mentioned ProstElan, and also this video I did on testosterone and other subjects: “Ben Greenfield’s Top 10 Diet & Fitness Breakthroughs Of The Year”. Matt asks: There's a growing scene here with plenty of sprint/Oly tris, aquathlons, 10k runs and time trial rides and I like to race as many as possible - isn't that where all the fun lies? Is it OK to have a season without an A race (or certainly not one between Sept and March, at least)? If so, how should my programme reflect this lack of one single peak? Angie asks: I notice that after a couple of miles of running, both my feet go completely numb. I have tried loosening my laces, changing my running shoes, stretching, rolling my calves and none of it seemed to help significantly. I have had an ultrasound done following 30 mins of running and have subsequently been diagnosed with chronic exertional compartment syndrome in both deep posterior compartments. I am not too keen on the idea of going down the surgery route, and just wondered if you were familiar with this and whether you can suggest any ideas before i give up on running altogether!? John has a call-in question: First, you recommended high intensity intervals. 30 seconds to 1 minute at maximum effort and then full recovery, I think? How may should I be doing? And, I think you said do this workout in afternoon every other day? Second, I ride with a group on the weekend. For now, we are doing 2 hour bike rides. I have been doing the rides "fasted". I eat a Gu Roctane at 1 hour and then at 1:30, and drink water otherwise. I have felt pretty good doing this and feel like I'm doing the right thing, guess I just need some reassurance. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Mary asks: I am curious what your opinion is on the HCG diet? Is it hype? Can you still train hard while doing this diet for the 6 weeks recommended to reset your weight. Susan asks: My 17 yr. old neice & high school track star suffers from a labrum tear. Thus far, PT and cortisone shots haven't helped and she's facing surgery. Timing is the issue. College recruiters have expressed interest in her. If she has surgery now, she'll miss 1/2 of cross-country season and may lose out on scholarship oppportunities. If she doesn't,she may not be able to perform as well. Her hip doesn't hurt when she runs but aches afterwards. Any suggestions on what she can do to get through the season? Thanks so much! Matt asks: I’ve got a question with working out for triathlons and having hypothyroidism. I’ve been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and am on hormone-replacement therapy. I’m supposed to take my medication on an empty stomach and not eat for an hour after. Unfortunately most of my workouts are in the morning before work so I’m consistently training in a fasted state, and I can tell my workouts suffer. Whenever I can train after work, I seem to have “breakthrough” sessions, but I think a lot of it has to do with having full glycogen stores. On the weekends I always work out fueled. In lieu of waking up earlier (I don’t think I could handle that). Do you have any suggestions or any experience in working with triathletes having this condition? Ben: I have been taking Vitamin E supplements for about 6 months for a variety of reasons most of all being restless legs, limbs at night. It seems to work great. I have recently read that there was as study that linked regular dosing of Vitamin E to an increased risk of stroke. I have a family history of stroke, and I would really like to not increase the risks. Any thoughts? Brian asks: My dad and other endurance athletes keep recommending I keep my foot strike cadence at about 90 steps per minute when I run, but I can't seem to hit this number without my heart rate sky-rocketing. Instead my normal cadence is about 83-85 steps per minute. What do you recommend in this case? Matt asks: My question is about chainrings and cassette combinations. I'm assuming different combination benefit different terrains. Can you explain which combinations are for which terrains and why? And what is the perfect all around combination. Alan asks: For a while i thought i had you pegged but there has been so much on the pod recently about 80% fat diets, 80% carbohydrate diets and plant based nutrition i think i am questioning what YOU think on the subject of nutrition. In my response to Alan, I recommend the book "Nourishing Traditions". -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! His formal education in the States included undergraduate studies in psychology, religion, and philosophy, and Graduate studies in Comparative Religions. Do you know much about these 2 products? Are they safe? Tony asks: I've a query about snacks; You advocate Larabars, which I like, however I've spotted Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch Gluten Free bars which are substantially lower in sugar when compared with the Larabar; 6g vs 19g. Obviously the sugary ingredients in Larabars are mainly dates and sugar is listed on the Nature Valley product, so which in your opinion is a better bet to grab in the convenience store for a quick energy pick me up? Alan asks: I just listened to your pod the other day talking about smoke points of oils and had a practical question. I use olive oil or coconut oil to fry up eggs every morning. i have no idea how hot the oil gets or how i would find out. should i be concerned or cook at a mid range temp on my stove instead of higher? any general suggestions or guidelines? Matthew asks: I just listened to the Podcast about electrolytes/sports drinks/water. The conclusions about electrolytes are amazing, though that doesn't change the fact about sugars and nutrition during exercise. Yes electrolytes aren't needed in sports drinks, but does that mean that sport drink formulas have to be re-vamped? Do the electrolytes do anything for the absorption/breakdown of say the malodextrin in Heed or simple sugars of Gatorade? durianrider asks: besides obese fad diet followers that believe you can be in great shape as an athlete on 400-600calories of carbs a day, do you know any REAL athletes that ONLY eat 400-600cals of carbs per day? Are you trying to tell us that you can restore glycogen on 400-600cals of carbs a day and eat lots of fat and protein AND recover in 24hours? lol! You need to playback the Doug Graham interview and learn some basic human physiology. Ed asks: love to do triathlon, but I'm afraid of swimming in the ocean or lake. I swim an 1hour, twice a week in a pool that is 12ft deep, can you help me, or give me some idea's of what to do, to overcome my fear. Cody asks: Every time I run, (mainly to stay in shape and train for basketball) I experience shin pain. Im not quite positive it is shin splints though, it starts almost instantly when I start my run, and never really gets worse, its a mild pain but enough to get me to stop running way sooner then I should be stopping. But the weird thing is when I play football and basketball or any other activity that involves me running, I dont get this pain which is what makes me question rather or not its is shinsplints. So to sum it all up when I run its unavoidable (for the past year and a half) but anything else it never happens. Chris asks: Hi Ben, in the past, you've recommended avoiding all sugars and starches for those active people looking to finally achieve that 6-pack, and who are already fairly lean. My question is about what to eat while avoiding sugars and starches. But what would the diet of an active person look like without sugar and starches, and how long would that person need to do that? My other concern is energy levels and motivation to workout, motivation suffering the most when I feel out of energy. Will trying to look good affect my ability to train my body?  I also mentioned I experimented with severe carb restriction a few times (veggies only carb source), and always experience equalibrium loss within a few days until I started eating carbs again. What's the deal with that? Finally, listener Ashley calls in about the Triathlon Dominator. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Craig asks: I'm looking for a gluten free cereal that I can just dump in my cereal bowl in the morning. I am adding blueberries and almonds to my cereal now. Ben has a call-in question about using glucosamine or Capraflex for recovering from an acute injury vs. using for chronic inflammation, and whether glucosamine chondroitin should be used long term. Christy asks: I just listened to episode 127 where you interviewed Udo Erasmus. What is the temperature where you start to damage saturated fats? Udo mentioned not heating fats to "frying temperatures", but I'm not sure what that means. Is it safer to bake meat, what about boiling it? Is the temperature of boiling water too high? Or steam? I believe the temperature of steam is higher than that of boiling water. I think deep fat fryers work at about 350 degrees, which is baking temperature as well, so is baking as bad as frying? Here is an oil smoke point chart. Jenn asks: I have a question about night-time leg cramps. For the past few weeks, I have been wakened several times a night with extremely painful spasms in my calves (mostly soleus), shins, and feet (both the tops and bottoms). They subside somewhat when I get up and stretch, but are a serious disturbance to my sleep and leave me achy and tired in the morning. I am a fit 38-year-old, and a former marathoner. I'm a daily commuter cyclist (about 45 - 90 minutes daily). I work out at the gym 3-5 days a week at a fairly high intensity, and do 2-3 yoga classes a week. My hydration and potassium intake are good. Other than somewhat increased cycling (clipped in for the first time this season), I haven't made any serious changes to my training. I have in the last 6 months switched to a diet lower in carbohydrate and have dropped about 10 pounds in that time, but my BMI is still a healthy 20.1. The only other time I've had cramps like this was when I was anorexic and quite underweight a number of years ago, but I'm sure that my caloric intake is adequate now (usually around 1200 - 1400). It does make me wonder, though, if it could be a particular nutritional deficiency that could be causing these cramps? (I don't think it's my pedals since I've had them since May and only started having these in the last month or so.) In my response to Jenn, I recommend she check out the magnesium http://www.pacificfit.net/supplements.php#naturalcalm and also this topical magnesium. Komal asks: Just wanted to ask which milk us better for us? 2% or 1%. Jeff asks: I'm a keen age grouper triathlete and have recently been diagnosed with osteitis pubis. Initial scans detected a small inguinal hernia but further investigation revealed OP which is what us causing me grief in the groin region. I've been advised to lay off running for 2 months but can swim and cycle. Do you have any advice to aid my recovery? Should I avoid kicking drills when swimming? Is walking ok? First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Featured Topic: Is An 80% Carbohydrate Based Diet Healthy? Douglas Graham, author of the 80/10/10 Diet, is a lifetime athlete and raw fooder since 1978, and is an advisor to world-class athletes and trainers from around the globe. Dr. Graham has served on the board of governors of the International Association of Professional Natural Hygienists and the board of directors of the American Natural Hygiene Society. He is on the board of advisors of Voice for a Viable Future, Living Light Films, Vegetarian Union of North America, and EarthSave International and serves as nutrition advisor for the magazine Exercise, For Men Only. Dr. Graham is the raw foods and fitness advisor for VegSource.com, the largest vegetarian website on the internet. He taught the Health Educator program at Hippocrates Institute, served as the "source authority" for Harmonious Living, and authors a column for the magazines Get Fresh! and Vibrance (previously known as Living Nutrition). During our interview, I ask Dr. Graham many questions, including: What Is The 80/10/10 Diet? What would a typical day of eating look like for the average person? What about for a highly active individual? In terms of volume, how much fruit and vegetable must be consumed each day for adequate energy? Should all the fruits and vegetables be organic, or does that matter? How do the muscles and brain thrive on such low levels of protein and fat? How do you respond to critics who say that fructose is a “poison”, or who vilify fructose? Why wouldn’t you want to cook any foods – don’t some foods become more nutritious with cooking? What type of nutrients might be missing in this diet, and how are those needs addressed? --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Craig has a call-in question about how to determine the macronutrient content of foods. James asks: Could you recommend something to give a race day boost without affecting the sympathetic response? Or is this exactly what it has to do in order to be a stimulant? Also have you seen any research into type one diabetics using higher insulin levels during races to replenish glycogen? Eva asks: I was wondering, what is your opinion of a new electrolyte drink, Sportaktive Easy electrolytes, as it compares to a product like Nuun. Sportaktive's website is www.Sportaktive.com. Johny G. asks: i currently live in southwest florida and it is hot and very, very humid down here. i seem to have a problem with dry skin but not necessarily dehydration. my skin is so dry that i will scratch it till i bleed. i drink well over a gallon of water a day and only drink water. i do run in the beach often and usually in the middle of the day when it is the hottest. it doesnt bother me but i do seem to have this dry skin....any suggestions? Ross asks: What is your opinion of using something like Hornet Juice or VAAM?  Do they work or it is placebo effect? Suzin asks: My boyfriend is training for the Ironman in Kentucky this August.  We have been disagreeing about shaving to reduce chaffing in his private areas.  I am aware of products like Dznuts but was hoping you could let me know where I can find any information about reducing chaffing/irritation. Ken asks: I have been getting a lot of tension and knots in my neck and back of my head lately. I got really into my nutrition 2 months ago going all natural, no sugar, 1 cup of coffee in the morning. I can't seem to get rid of this tension though. What do you recommend? Jack asks: Ben, how thin is too thin for endurance athletes? Obviously on average they are skinnier than the rest of the population, but where is the line where it becomes unhealthy or dangerous? I am more of a mesomorphic body type and have more muscle than average but very low body fat. I've been gradually losing weight as I increase training volume even though I am consuming 5,000-6,000 most days. Should I be avoiding fasted workouts, or do I still want to be able to burn more fat for fuel from a performance standpoint? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Featured Topic: Everything You Need to Know About Plant Based Diets, with Dr. Bill Misner Bill Misner, a Ph.D. nutritionist, alternative medicine practitioner, author of Finding Fitness For Life, and top Master’s runner, including National Trail race course record holder in the age 70-up category, has been on a plant-based diet for the past 20 months, and says that it allows for accommodation of higher training work loads and more strength/speed workouts due to elevated recovery rate. During our discussion, I ask Bill many questions, including: Have you always eat a plant based diet, and if not, what led you to "make the switch"? What does a typical day of eating look like for you? What changes have you observed? Do you think that part of "feeling good" on a plant based diet is just an acute response to making better food choices, and if so, once that response wears off, is it possible for there to be neural or muscular nutrition deficits down the road? What about common plant-based diet foods like legumes and grains - are you concerned about binding agents or phytic acids? There is some argument that neural problems like Alzheimer's are related to inadequate fat intake. If so, does that place someone on a plant based diet at increased risk? If you look at components like essential fatty acids, essential amnion acids, vitamin D, vitaminK2, CoQ10, preformed vitamin A, iron, vitamin B12, mineral ratios, hormones or A1C, do you see risks from eating a plant based diet. So do you take nutritional supplements? I also mention a refutation of the book "The China Study", which I  link to here (Weston Price Foundation).  --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Jeff has a call-in question about whether a "Kosher dairy certified" whey protein is beneficial. Helene asks: I just read this article you wrote and that is why I am writing you. I am an ultra trailrunner. I am also a Certified Natural Hygienist, which means I know everything about food combining. From my knowledge, I don't have information on how to apply it while doing endurance sport. I didn't found yet readings on the subject. I only found conventional readings on endurance nutrition where everything is mixed together. Even sources that are vegetarian or vegan also mixed up everything...Which means that in competition, I never used gel, energy bar or sport drink. All I ingest is water and fresh fruits. I still get very good results, I never have a cramp. But after 4 hours into it, I can steel feel a lack of energy. Do you have any interesting source of information on the subject? Kara asks: What's your take on the use of Humanofort to improve training recovery and performance? Igor asks: After hearing about the amino acids benefits from your podcast I'm thinking to start supplementing by them. You have been recommending the MAP product which I find a bit expensive for me. Do you have any suggestions for what to look while shopping for cheaper aminos? Will it make me more harm than good using the cheap aminos? Craig asks: I participated in a 70 mile charity ride yesterday and had to SAG in with severe cramping in my vastus medialis and slight cramping in my upper/inner quad area. I couldn't turn the pedals in anything but my lowest gear without bringing the cramps back in full force. I took in a 28 oz bottle of water plus 200 calories of Hammer Perpetuem and 4-6 Hammer Endurolytes each hour. I was taking on so much fluid I had to relieve myself at every rest stop. About 3 weeks ago I started a conditioning program at the Y 3 times a week. It consists of machines and cardio, including leg extensions, presses and curls. I'm doing low weight/high reps as my goal is to reduce fat. What steps do I take to overcome the problem? Dan asks: What are your thoughts on marijuana use and aerobic training? I don't use it all the time but enjoy it during long runs. I find that it gets me in the groove or mind set to maintain a steady pace. I've never used it racing. Chris asks: In a recent half ironman I tried to eat my normal race morning breakfast of pancakes and really struggled to get anything down due to "race stomach" nerves. This has been a little bit of an issue at all races this year with it being a bigger issue at the races I want to do best at. However at this recent half it really impacted me as I puked up everything I got down race morning once I got the race venue, it seemed this really disrupted my stomach as I struggled through the whole bike portion to get food down and absorbed into my system, I threw up a couple times on bike and run and then about mile 8 on the run it seemed my stomach finally came around and I successfully put down 3 GUs in the last 5 miles of the run. Unfortunately my lack of caloric intake before and throughout most of the race left me feeling quite flat and unable to perform to my potential. I did this race the previous year and my time this year was about 15 minutes slower but I feel my fitness is better this year and it has shown in other races. So, I feel like pre-race nerves kind of got the better of me in this half and really impeded my performance, so my question is kind of 2-fold, do you have any advice for coping with pre-race nerves, and do you have any good ideas of pre-race meals that are easy to handle if I'm having some trouble getting food down race morning? First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Kristen asks: In one of your podcasts you spoke about beta alanine. Is this safe to take with caffeine know an empty stomach and are its effects on women different than men? Matthew asks: I have been looking into this machine called a versa climber to help improve my running and cycling. Do you have an opinion about it? Should I just stick to running and cycling? Joseph asks: My feet are nasty. my wife is on my case to get a pedicure, which i have refused. my latest argument is that the calluses on my feet are protective and if they sand my feet down i will get blisters. even i assume this argument has no merit. on the other hand i see no substantive reason to get one either. are there any good argument for or against getting pedicures (aside from being a man/looking pretty)? Tony Maldonado asks: Ben, I am an experienced ultra marathoner. At least I like to think I am. I've run a 100 miler, a couple of 100k and seven 50k events. Along with a few marathons. I am a middle of the packer. I am currently training for my first 50 miler on a very familiar very hilly course. I also want to run a flat 20 miler that takes place 1 week before the 50 mile event. I usually have a low mileage run the weekend before an ultra but really want to run this 20 miler and feel I can pull it off. What are you're suggestions or thoughts on this? In my response to Tony, I reference my article about Lightning Speed Recovery Secrets. Chris asks: What is your opinion about Phosphatidylserine and its use with endurance athletes? In my response to Chris, I mention Jarrow phosphatidylserine. Kathleen asks: Goat's Colostrum seems to be such a good supplement and I want to take it. But, I've had breast cancer and the info. talks about a growth hormone. It is important that I do not raise my estrogen levels. Is this growth hormone something I should stay away from? I am not on any anti-cancer drugs because of their side effects. Also, it says goat's colostrum can raise low blood sugar. Should people with diabetes not take this supplement? Tifani asks: In one of your podcasts, you mentioned that you were writing, or had written a book about eating in accordance with your body type. I have realized recently that I am a skinny fat person and as a vegetarian that despises weight and resistance training, I am trying to figure out what the right balance of protein/carbs/fat is for me. Thank you for any insight you can give me! Tomaz asks: TUM (Techniche Universitat Munich, Germany) has recently published research of positive impact of beer on endurance sport (emphasizing alkoholfree beer). What is your thought on that? Tom asks: At a running expo before a local run, a salesperson gave me a sample of a dietary supplement called "Limu Original", the "premium fucoidan blend". What is this? Jack asks: I recently competed at the IM70.3 UK and was in a good position going onto the run but after about 1km of the run I began to feel bloated and sick. This GI distress continued over the whole run and so I was unable to take on any more fuel and most importantly was unable to put together the sub 1h25m half I was looking for. Instead I was forced to slow down and stop to be sick regularly causing me to finish severely disappointed with a 1h42m half. I had similar issues last season at both IM70.3 and IM UK so this year I have adopted a paleo diet similar to that outlined in Joe Friel’s book to not only improve my diet but to help reduce GI distress. I thought the reduced gluten leading up to the race would help but this was not the case. During the race I had a gel just before the swim start and then consumed 500ml of Gatorade with a gel per hour of the bike. My thoughts are that the other causes could be the energy gels consumed on the bike or inadvertently swallowing the lake water during the swim. I would appreciate your thoughts and ideas to help me discover the cause and prevent it from ruining yet another race. Justin asks: I just finished my 2nd half ironman this past Sunday, I followed one of your training plans on training peaks an took 23 minutes off my first 1/2 iron time. I wasn't sure how it would go as I missed a TON of workouts, but I guess between absorbing as much knowledge from your podcast and doing the workouts I did it came together for me on race day. My question is I have another 1/2 iron race in just under 4 weeks now. Knowing that I have the endurance to get thru the event I want to focus on getting faster now if I can. Should I be doing large ring hill repeats and running hills to boost my strength and speed? Or why is the best way to add some speed over the next few weeks? Sarah asks: I started doing crossfit Dec 1st. My background in fitness is a more traditional bodybuilding type workout with your typical cardio (running, elliptical etc). At first I had a hard time with crossfit since it's powerlifting type stuff, it was like I had to be trained all over again. Since then until now, I've improved greatly, but I lack in the intensity and endurance. Many times I'll stop midway to catch my breath and regroup, but I see the others pressing forth and pushing past. I'd really like to get better at it. I've heard that doing two WODs a day may help in my endurance and intensity, but isn't that overuse? I crossfit 5 days a week at 5:30 am, and my coach is stellar. What recommendations do you have for a crossfitter to get faster, stronger, and to gain endurance and stamina? In my response to Sarah, I recommend the Elite Performance Profile from Bioletics. Craig Huggart asks: I'm training for a sprint distance triathlon. At what point would you recommend including some speed training? Philip asks: I recently started taking Lipton Iced Green Tea for beneficial purpose, as i could not take the plain green tea. After bringing some 36 cans at one stretch, i realized that it would provide approx. 80 Cal for a full 330 ml can (every 100 ml is reported to produce 28 Cal). After this i have reduced the intake to 1 can a day with some exercise. Is it really harmful? will taking the 36 cans over a month really cause me health problems? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! The "Perfect Health Diet" book  claims to have the four steps to renewed health, youthful vitality and long life. But what is the Perfect Health Diet? In this interview, I talk to author Paul Jaminet, and ask him the following questions about the relatively high fat and unique diet contained in the "Perfect Health Diet" book. In your book, you list several reasons you believe a 20-65-15 carb-fat-protein ratio to be ideal…what are those reasons? Isn't glucose the body's primary fuel? What about people who are exercising like an Ironman athlete? Can they really eat that much fat, and have you seen this done? Why do athletes think that eating more protein helps them to add muscle? In your book, you list what you consider to be the four most dangerous foods. What are they, and why are they dangerous? In your book, you say that you eat "conventional supermarket meats". Does that mean you don't eat organic, grass fed meat, and if not, why? In your book, you list vegetables as a fat source. Can you explain how that works? You say that coconut oil leads to a naturally slim waist. How? Why do you recommend people supplement with high dose iodine? Why do you encourage long ketogenic fasts? ...And much more! ----------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -New! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Craig has a call in question about swimming, cycling and running all in one day during triathlon training. Mario asks: I like to listen to music and podcasts, is there a set of headphones you would recommend for use both indoors in the gym and outdoors. I especially hate when they snag and rip out of ears, what do you use? In my response to Mario, I recommend Yurbuds. Alan asks: I eat low carb (not much processed foods/sugars) but my father is having kidney issues (doctor can not explain it but kidney function is down to like 50%) and is being told he can not eat much in the way of protien (like 30 grams/day) or potassium. he is also being told to eat everything i have learned is bad and will lead to weight gain and insulin issues such as white bread. he is also on blood pressure medications, etc. this is certainly beyond me and the doctors/nutritionists are advising and do not seem concerned about what seems to be an extremely unhealthy diet. do you have any thoughts on what he could do or where to look for better advice? Sam asks: I just read this article.  What do you make of it.  Are Tour de France cyclists exceptions to the rules, or how does this assessment compare to yours?  These cyclists are surely putting their bodies through considerably more stress than any AGer.  On the other hand, their nutrition and rest/work cycles may be more controlled than an AGer.  Did the time period have anything to do with it (Gatorade was not invented yet!)? http://www.wired.com/playbook/2011/06/myth-too-much-exercise/ Craig asks: Jeff Galloway's philosophy of Run-Walk-Run has helped me in runs. Could this apply to Triathlon (at least the bike and run legs)? In my response to Craig, I recommend he watch the Bobby Mcghee video interview series at EndurancePlanet.com. Andree asks: Beer gut. Is there really such a thing? Anonymous asks: My whole life I have had lumps, or nodes of tissue under my nipples. I am a 32 year old male and have never had any issues with this and am in great health, however, what are these and is there a way to make them go away? In my response, I refer to Get-Fit Guy's man-boobs episode. Chuck asks: I've heard that taking coconut oil can "increase your metabolism up to 48%" over 14 hours (not sure exactly on the time). Is this true? Also, what I'm more interested in, is that I've heard it can increase energy? Is this true, and if so, how much coconut oil should I take to accomplish this? Would it be a good idea to incorporate some before a workout? Tony asks: Having been newly diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and having experimented with a gluten free regime positively, I'm now struggling with blood sugar highs and lows, I'm concerned that the relatively high gi foods I'm now eating such as rice and potatoes are causing these issues. Any tips on minimizing these probs would be gratefully received. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! A burgeoning industry has developed around machines or devies to ionize or alkalinize water, structure water, subject water to magnetic fields, or oxygenate water. In this episode, I interview Dr. Stephen Lower, who has a doctorate in chemistry and runs the Aquascam website. During our discussion, Stephen introduces the chemistry and concept behind many of the popular water health trends, and whether each is based on chemically sound theories. You'll find out things like... Is Alkaline water safe? Is it possible to Ionize water? Can you increase blood oxygen when you drink Oxygenated water? Can you Structure water, and if so, does it stay that way? Why would Magnetized water be healthy? First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Paula asks: Back in mid-March, I noticed that my neck suddenly became stiff. It honestly seemed to happen for no obvious reason (I didn't fall or injure myself, etc.). Still, today, I can only turn my head about 45 degrees to both the left and the right, while looking straight forward. When I reach the 45 degree point, my neck is completely tight and painful all the way down each side, from the base of my skull to the top of my shoulders. This makes exercise no fun, particularly swimming. I saw an ART guy who did some very deep work and gave me exercises. I also saw my regular MD who prescribed some pain medication. The pain still persists, and neither seemed too concerned about it. I found anacupuncturist who hasn't been able to give me any relief, but has suggested that I take Vitamin B, preferably in the form of an injection (the one she suggested is called Neurobion and is a series of injections done over 5 days). It is also available in pill form. Why is she suggesting this and what are your thoughts? Pamela asks: I have heard or read you talk about rollers and that you use a rumble roller. Do you suggest the black or blue roller and why? Do you suggest the compact or full length and why? I prefer deep tissue massages when I get one (which is rare) so I'm thinking the black rumble roller may be better. Ben asks: In epsisode 140 KC Craichy stated "So really what you want to look for is 180 or 120 being the first number on the EPA and DHA, that is the number, that is the natural ratio which you find it in nature." What does the 180 and 120 refer to? Is that mg? Also his stance on converting ALA to EPA seems to be in contrast to the creator of Udo's oil. Where do you come in on this? Ron asks: I have a question regarding a couple products and my timing of using them as Recovery Drinks and Meal Replacement. I normally work out at 5:00 AM (on an empty stomach) for 60 minutes at a high intensity for 5 days a week (on my 6 day I do a LSD run) after 6 hours of sleep. In addition, I do a lunch time tempo run for 30 minutes about 8-10 hours later. Following my AM workout I take a product made by Beachbody called P90X Recovery Formula within 30 minutes of finishing the workout. I then go and walk the dog for about a mile (about 20 minutes) and upon returning, I have a serving of Myoplex Original (in powder packets) mixed with 1/3 cup of Silk Vanilla Almond Milk (no-GMO), 1/3 cup Silk Very Vanilla Soy Milk (non-GMO) & 1/3 cup of Horizon Organic Milk (2%) (with Omega-3 added in). So both are consumed within an hour of my workout. Prior to leaving for work (about an hour after finishing the above drinks) I have my breakfast meal Replacement, a product made by Beachbody called Shakeology. I take this with the same combo of milks above. I also take another P90X Recovery Formula after my lunch time run. My question is twofold: Firstly, could you review these products (I've attached the nutritional information)? Secondly, Is my timing of consuming these supplements ideal or would I better served by taking the Myoplex at night (around 7:00 PM) to put recovery nutrients into my body prior to bed time. Am I overkilling it in the AM? Should I spread it out more? In my response to Ron, I recommend he check out my latest post on 8 post-workout recovery snacks. Elizabeth asks: I'm wondering if you've heard of a product called "Generation UCAN" and what you think of it for use in half to full IM training/racing. Christian asks: Does lifting weights before or after a long cardio session - 20mile run or 100 mile bike provide any protective effect to prevent muscle catabolism? Jen asks: I'd like to start a running program. I consider myself to be in good shape as I've been working out regularly for a year. I've mostly been cycling and weight training and I'd like to switch it up. In the past, every time I start running, even for short periods of time, my achillis tendon swells painfully and hamstring/glute muscles on my right leg 'injure' instantly. When this happens, I can't train for a week! I don't know if these are 'weak areas' and what I can do to prevent it. So, how do I begin? In my response to Jen, I recommend this free report: Muscle Imbalances Revealed. Kathy asks: I have heard you say a few times that you wouldn't recommend eating a lot of fruit if you are aiming to lose weight. Both my husband and I are fairly fit and are training for several triathlons, but we'd like to trim a few pounds. Can you explain more why fruit is not ideal for weight loss, and what carbs to consume instead? I try to limit my gluten intake and already eat sweet potatoes every day (thanks to you!), so does that leave mostly rice and quinoa? Finally, Jack has a call-in comment... -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Lisa has a call in question about metabolic testing and the respiratory quotient, and whether she can lower her RQ to switch to "mixed fuelds", and what the test costs. Michael asks: Hi Ben, I am extremely concerned about my blood sugar levels. Last year I had an occupational health physical and they told me my fasted blood sugar levels were elevated at 118. After that I started phasing in healthier food choices and for at least the past 6 months I've been eating very clean, whole, organic foods and spending about 5 hours a week lifting and interval training. I'm about 5'11 and 155lbs and relatively low BF%. I just got my bloodwork from this years physical and my blood sugar was 118 yet again. I thought maybe I should give you some background. I'll eat a banana first thing then hit the gym. I have post workout shake consisting of oats, whey, chia seeds and whole milk and then my morning coffee with whole milk and stevia. Lunch is usually my big meal where I'll usually have something like an egg salad sandwich and a green smoothie. Around 4 I'll have a snack like naan and hummus and dinner usually consists of turkey burgers and maybe some fruit. I supplement with 4,000 iu of vitamin D and 3 tbspns of Udo's oil every day. My HDL was 40, LDL was 62, and my triglycerides were 84 (which are all improvements over last year). Sorry for the long question but I am quite concerned and don't understand. I do eat a whole lot of carbs and was drinking a lot of milk to bulk up. Would a more paleo/zone diet be beneficial to me or could this be something unrelated to my relatively healthy lifestyle? Josh asks: I've been training for Ironman 70.3 Kansas since December. I started out weighing around 160lbs and am currently at 153lbs. I'm 5ft 10in, in my 20's and have a "cyclist" build (small all over except for my quads). I've been zoning in on my racing weight of 150lbs or slightly below. Just a few days ago after a brick workout in the summer sun I dipped down to 148lbs due to water loss. This is normal for me as I'm a heavy sweater. But today I weighed in at 159lbs after my swim session! How in the world could this be? I eat very healthy and watch my caloric intake. I'm sure some of it is water weight, but 6lbs worth? Whats going on here? Eric asks: I have a question regarding some I know who's experiencing some creeping weight gain. She is a competitive age grouper in the marathon (sub 3:30) and is a periodic triathlete. She is good about tracking every bite of food. After workouts consumes a smoothie containing yellow pea/hemp/brown rice protein blend along with some greens and fruit. Also began supplementing with BCAA's as well. She recently got better about taking nutrition during runs and bike rides. Despite being careful to keep carb/fat/protein ratios in the proper limits and monitoring calories she is still seeing her weight slowly creep up. Could this be the early indicator of over training (i.e. overtaxed endocrine system)? This is someone who commonly has 50-70 mile running weeks on top of 3-4 swim sessions and 3 bike workouts a week, so we are not talking about a casual exerciser. Any insight you may have would be greatly appreciated! Chuck asks: I've been reading some lately on intermittent fasting and working out. Can you explain a little more about this- who it's good for, why to (or not to do it), and if there is ever reasons for endurance athletes to do it--It seems like it would be hard to have the energy for a hard workout after not eating for such a long time (i.e. 24 hours). Also, it seems like a lot of the reasons revolve around vanity and having your muscles look ripped, but I'm guessing thats not the main reason? jen asks: I recently started taking a low dose birth control (6 months ago) I feel like my performance has decreased and that I am just not as strong. And am unable to push myself as hard as I use to. I have gained 5 lbs. My period were regular before I started the birth control. Is there any research on weather the increased hormone level could be the cause of decreased performance in females. And if so could I do anything about it ? Monte asks: How do you do Prolozone therapy? Christian asks: My wife has started training for a sprint triathlon. When she exercises in the heat she gets significant swelling after 15 minutes. The swelling is mostly in her arms and hands- bad enough that she gets a carpal tunnel type syndrome. No cardiac or other medical issues. We eat a gluten free, low carb diet. She has tried adding salt to her water bottle without any change. Any ideas or suggestions? Jeff asks: What are your top five "can't miss" audio podcasts on any topic? In Episode #90, I talk about my favorite books. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Melanie asks: I need advice on how to reduce estrogen dominance. I'm not interested (at least right now) in using a progesterone cream. I'd like to reduce estrogen naturally. Which foods will help reduce and which foods will increase the problem? I avoid soy like the plague and I eat a mostly organic, whole foods diet. I exercise (maybe not enough) and I try to avoid drinking from plastic and avoid parabens in cosmetics. Also, I read that high fat diet should be avoided. Does this apply to healthy fats? I eat lots of fats, but the good ones (love nuts and seeds). Any advice is appreciated since PMS derails my exercise and healthy eating. Joy asks: I'm doing my 1st Sprint Triathlon in July. I own a stationary bike and was wondering if and or what the big difference is between using an indoor trainer or a stationary bike? Was thinking of buying an indoor trainer but didn't know if I should spend the money when I Do own a SB. Chris asks: Do you have any advice for general Achilles health?  I've had to modify a lot of the hill training simply because after I do the hills my Achilles will ache.  I've also noticed (all the sudden) that at distances greater than 13-14 miles I start getting achilles pain. Suzanne asks: I saw that you were taking Phenocane as a COX2 inhibitor. In your opinion how would you compare this to Saligesic or White Willow stem bark for pain management? And for inflammation comparing Boswellia and Proteolytic enzymes (and of course fish oils -omega 3's)? I know that everyone is different and you have to be willing to be your own test dummy sometimes, but it's helpful to gain insight from others. Also, do you recommend a specific high quality supplement company for Phenocane? Brian asks: I noticed a lot of pre workout supplements have 1,3 dimethylamylamine is this a safe ? I currently take Jack3d with the following ingredients: Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, Creatine Monohydrate, Beta Alanine, Caffeine, 1,3-Dimethylamylamine (Geranium [Stem]), Schizandrol A Rich asks: What are your thoughts on the supplements: Juice Plus & Mona Vie from a general health point of view? I have been taken these two supplements for awhile and as a new listener I am thinking about maybe switching to or at least adding the Living Fuel Supergreens to my diet. Jack asks: I'm 17 years old, and for as long as I can remember I've had very shaky hands. Usually not a big deal, but I'm a competitive rock climber and going into the Army, which both require steady hands. I've been to many doctors with little success. Any diet or supplementation advice that might help? I eat pretty healthy, especially for my age, but my diet still isn't perfect. I've been trying Natural Calm Magnesium for a little while, but no success yet. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Brian Mackenzie from Crossfit Endurance is an expert in strength and conditioning for endurance athletes, and is the creator of CrossFit Endurance. He is a Level 3 CrossFit Certified Trainer, and is a Level 3 POSE Certified Running Coach. Brian has been working in the fitness industry to some degree for the last 20 years. He has an internship program for professional trainers. Brian has been at the pinnacle of training athletes and clients of all shape, size and ability for the last decade. Starting his training career as a physical therapy assistant and volunteering with adaptive PE programs for stroke victims, he has used the simplest to the most complex of modalities. Learning how to powerlift at an early age, Brian understood functional movement at the beginning of his career. Moving into the endurance world, he worked with Dr. Romanov (Creator of POSE Method of Running), and learned about running mechanics very early in his career. He has trained professional athletes from a multitude of sports including the NFL, MMA, and AVP, Running, Cycling, Swimming, and Celebrity. Brian has successfully used CrossFit as the cornerstone of his programming for endurance athletes, while supplementing with sport specific wods. His athletes train sometimes a third of what the norm train with superior results. Brian has been a competitive Ultra Runner. He competed in Ironman and more than 30 ultra marathons ranging from 50k to 100 miles including the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100. During our interview, I ask Brian: -what is crossfit endurance, and how is it different than regular crossfit? -what principles do you use to guide workout design and programming? -can you walk us through a sample week of workouts? -how do you think crossfit endurance compares to the traditional method of triathlon training, and do you think someone could go faster in a triathlon with your method? -how do you reply to critics who argue that weight training does not benefit endurance athletes? During the course of the interview, Brian mentions Arthur Lydiard, Percy Cerutty and Peter Coe as additional references of information for Crossfit Endurance. ----------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: -Click here to donate $1 to keep this podcast going! -BenGreenfieldFitness Inner Circle is now just $1 for a 14 Day Sneak Peek! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Gina has a call in question: I have a question about my 13 yr old daughter. She's a swimmer and practices 2 1/2 hrs 4 times/wk and attends meets 2 times/month. My daughter is 5 ft 3 inches and weighs 103#. She swims year round and is off 3 weeks in the fall and in the spring. I noticed during her fall/winter season, she was often sick, fatigued, and her swim times didn't improve. After evaluating her food intact, I noticed she was only eating about 20-30 grams of protein/day. She is a "picky" eater and prefers carbs over protein. I have since been pushing protein, but I'm having difficulties getting her to eat a variety of sources. She will eat chicken, turkey, and eggs. I've tried a variety of whey protein smoothes, but she doesn't like them. She takes a multi-vitamin. I will be changing her to one you recommend on your web site. How much protein should she be getting and are there any other supplements you think would be helpful for her? Lori asks: I've been observing a pattern in myself in the last few months concerning protein powders and I'm hoping you can help me make sense of this puzzle. I've noticed when I consume a protein shake containing whey that my blood sugar takes a dive within an hour and I have to eat something else. I've observed with any mix with whey in it. I currently have some Hammer whey and some Mt. Capra double bonded goat protein powder. On the other hand, if I consume a protein shake with other kinds of protein--and in this case I'm referring specifically to Living Fuel (which is brown rice and yellow pea protein) or Nutiva Hemp protein powder that I can potentially go 4-5 hours quite comfortably. I thought perhaps it was just what I was adding to the powder or when I was using it. In an effort to sort it out, in the last month I started to use all of the above (proteins) in the exact same way (after exercise,) and I kept the added ingredients that I added exactly the same--almond milk and frozen strawberries. I got the same results. Whey behaves like it is giving me a glycemic spike--even when consumed in those first 30 minutes after exercise. Does this mean I just don't do well with whey? What is going on here --I'm perplexed. Mike asks: Ben, you've mentioned that taking vitamin supplements near the time of drinking coffee can reduce the affects. How long before or after drinking coffee should one take supplements to get the most benefit. In my response to Mike, I recommend reading http://www.pacificfit.net/coffee.php Rebecca asks: I recently listened to one of your podcasts where talked about the negative affects of hormonal birth control.I have seriously been thinking about switching to a non-hormonal IUD because I think being on the pill has been hindering my ability to lose weight. In your experience, how much easier is it to lose weight being off of hormonal birth control? Also what is your opinion of non-hormonal IUDs? Bill asks: I've listed to a number of your podcasts (which are excellent!) and hoping you can advise me on how best to lose approx 10 lbs over the next 2-3 months before I enter my build up phase for my next Ironman (IM WA  in December).   I'm 6'2"; 185 lbs and 48 yrs old.  The area I'd like to target is stomach and thighs.  I' recently started changing my diet to reduce intake of sugar; whites and processed foods and reduce on carbs in evening meal to reduce insulin response.  Your advise/tips would be greatly appreciated. In my response to Bill, I recommend he: -Go to the upper right corner of http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com -Do search for "fat loss video" -Access the top 3 results Mike Burns asks: I was wondering if you might be able to help me. I get pain on the inside of my forearm, just above the elbow when I use the preacher curl machine at the gym. It feels more like stop doing what your doing pain, rather then muscles being worked pain. The machine has stationary handles so I can't adjust the way my wrists are turned. I can do concentration curls with dumbbells, and curls with the cable machine with no problems. Should I just avoid the preacher curl machine from now on? Etana asks: I'm a vegan Ben. Some vegetarian vegan products such as cheese have casein in them. Am I cheating on my vegan diet by consuming dairy subsitute products such as "dairy free" cheese and coffee creamer by consuming products with casein in them? It's hard to find dairy free products without casein, a milk derivitive. Craig asks: What do you think of Dr. Romanov's Pose method of Triathlon? I've been a Pose runner for years but I'd love to hear your take in it. Finally, Luke Powell calls in with a testimonial about the Triathlon Dominator. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     ---------------------------------------------------------------   Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Mike asks: Just wanted to know your opinion on Naked juice? Pam asks: I really enjoy dry roasted, in the shell, unsalted peanuts. Do you know if microwaving the peanuts for a couple of minutes will eliminate the afflatoxin? In my response to Pam, I talk about Inner Circle Podcast #1 - Is Microwaving Food Bad? This is the form of flower pollen extract I recommend to Joe Joe asks: I've heard you tout the benefits of pollen extract paired with zinc for increasing testosterone levels. I went to my local health food store and couldn't find pollen extract. I did find Bee Pollen (nature's way brand). Is there an appreciable difference between the extract you suggest and the bee pollen that is readily available? Nicki asks: Today during the Tour of California coverage elliptical chain rings were brought up. Is there any benefit for triathlon? Will it help to save legs for run? Jeremy asks: I heard the Ben Greenfield podcast recently about colostrum so I ended up here: http://www.pacificfit.net/supplements.php#colostrum. My question is can you tell me why this product is better than, say, the Swanson vitamins brand? The one you recommend is from goats, and most others seem to be from cows. Also, it appears yours is almost 1500 mg  which is three times the 500 mg on the Swanson brand. Jackie asks: Hi Ben. I've heard chia seeds have all the essential omega-3/omega-6's. Is this true, and are they in the correct ratio? Can chia seeds replace fish oil as a vegetarian option? (And are they better to or comparable to flax seed?)   Mark asks: Just bought a new stationary bike trainer (with Power Meter) to add additional cross-training to my marathon training. Love the bike and the additional training at odd hours and bad weather is great. The problem I'm having is the toe clips (I think), I believe they are causing achilles pain that I feel when I run. The pain is real close to the heal. I switched shoes but that didn't make a difference. I lowered the saddle that didn't make a difference. I've decided to remove the toe clips next. Any ideas that might help? hksparky asks: As I've learned we train at the top of the Fat Burning Zone in order to teach our bodies how to burn fat. (1) Why bother teaching our bodies that when we race well into our Carb Burning zone? What race benefits do I get if my body will never see that low HR in a race? (2) Is it possible to train my body so that the top of my Fat Burning HR zone allows me to run at my race pace? (3) When you run your 1:30 Half Marathon in the Half Ironman's are you burning predominately Fat? Paul asks: I am planning on running a 50 mile ultramarathon. My question is what type of training would your recommend. I would think 5 days of running per week with some type of interval/hill work each week, but not sure. Also with high running mileage I assume that cross training would be minimal? Paul asks: I had something really strange happen to me after a race recently. After completing a 14 mile trail race, I took a seat. When I stood back up and reached down for my water, I got this crazy taste in my mouth. To me it tasted like my fillings. My hands also seemed to tingle. It lasted about a minute or two. Granted, I was a bit undertrained, and probably a bit dehydrated, but never had this happen before. Any clue? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Andrei asks: I heard from different sources that you should not eat fruits with or immediately after a meal (instead, wait for at least 2 hours). Is it true and if it is, why? Thanks! Kalley asks: My question is about my heart rate, specifically when working out. I am 24, a very healthy weight, and active. I've been working out with a trainer for 8 months. I do a lot of strength training, and a decent amount of cardio (varying comfortable jogs and interval training) - but I feel like I have an abnormally high heart rate. When I do intervals, my heart rate will jump to over 200. When I am jogging at a comfortable pace (one I could easily hold a conversation during) my heart rate is around 170 - 180. I'm baffled. Everything I've read suggests that is too high - but I'm an active, healthy 24 year old. Is it possible that my heart rate is higher than normal? I know the standard equation (226 minus your age) isn't necessarily accurate, but a lot of resources lead me to believe I am either horribly out of shape, or have a heart problem. In my response to Kalley, I talk about how to self-test your heart rate zones. Click here to read more. Craig asks: I water fast one day per week for religious reasons. I would love to here your thoughts on how to make this work while training for endurance events. Issa asks: What is advisable to use Spiropent? Does it have any side effects? Jeff has a call-in question about shoe recommendations for gym based workouts, including Vibram Five Fingers. Nick asks: You have mentioned Bioletics on the podcast before however I can not recall you ever talking about Spectracell (they offer a simlar testing service), and was wondering if you had heard of them / what your opinion on them is, specifically the Micronutrient test. On face value it would seem more comprehensive / better value for money then Bioletics $249 test. In my response to Nick, I recommend this test from Bioletics: The Injury and Recovery Profile. Susan asks: I'm intrigued by the biolectics testing. When I last had blood work done, I had asked for a cortisol test. It consisted of 1 blood draw in the morning. While I don't know the actual results, I was told they were normal. I am concerned about all the stress I place on my body through intense and prolonged exercise. With the sudden weight gain I've experienced (yes, I guess I am in menopause - previous podcast #142)I'm just grasping at straws, trying to figure if there's ANYTHING I can do. Can the saliva test tell me anything more that the blood draw didn't? Thanks again In my response to Susan, I mention: http://www.diagnostechs.com/TestPanels/AdrenalStressIndex.aspx. You can also get this test through Bioletics, and be sure to let them know I sent you. First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Kalley asks: My question is in regards to birth control. I am 24 years old and have been on birth control pills since I was 18. In the last year or so I have taken a real interest in my health: changing my diet to be mostly real foods, working out with a personal trainer, and begun training for a half marathon. That said, I have become increasingly aware of the lack of (credible) information available surrounding birth control and the effects it may have on women's hormone levels, weight loss, and overall health. Estrogen seems to be linked to many health problems, so the increased amount being introduced into my system through daily birth control doses makes me nervous. (Especially considering we are also exposed in other forms in the environment). What are your thoughts on this topic? What kind of effects may taking birth control have? Should I be worried about this? Are there some forms of birth control that are better for overall health than others? Amy asks: I was watching a video interview of Jenn Shelton recently and have been impressed by her ultramarathoning, as I am hoping to run an ultra in the next year or so. She briefly talks about her diet and basically says it isn't a good one, she loves Taco Bell & Mountain Dew. How can she run ultras as well as she does while fueling in a not-so-healthy manner? Stephen asks: A guy at work is telling me about Dr. Hulda Clark and her parasite zapper. He swears by it's effectiveness. Hocus Pocus or real medicine?? This might be an interesting topic for an upcoming podcast. I'd like to hear what you think. glen asks: Hi Ben. First, thanks for your earlier advice on maintaining optimal T levels while I was prepping for my first BB show at the young age of 53. It was instrumental in winning the NPC Natural Ohio Over 50 Master's Championship on April 16th. Fast forward to today, after a 2 week major flu illness, I am back to training, but would like to add minimumal 5k mileage training to compete competitively in my age group this summer. Any suggestions on how to incorporate my mileage and pace training as not to burn up my lean mass. I am lifting 2days on, 1 day off, 2 days on per week. Presently, I am doing treadmill work for 2 miles at a moderate pace 3 days a week. Have competed in 5k's in years past and know I have to bump up my mileage and intensity, therefore need your expertise in accomplishing this in a intelligent manner. Kyle asks: If I person has full glycogen stores at the start of a marathon, which is enough to run approximately 16-18 miles, why does so many online articles about the marathon say that running out of glycogen is the cause of "hitting the wall" when a runner is only getting about 70% of their fuel from glycogen, and other 30% or so from fat? Also take into account that they are likely fueling with some sort of CHO supplementation during the event. What I'm asking is, is there any physiological basis for fatigue occurring at mile 20? James asks: Any suggestions on how to resolve why I consistently can't sleep on higher training volume days (any day I ride 50 or more miles or do a brick workout)? Kathy asks: I had a question about how much Vitamin A and beta carotene to take in. My husband, who is 31, and I are both into cycling, and he's gearing up for his second season of triathlons. He smoked heavily from roughly 16 - 28. From what I have read, it seems that smokers or ex-smokers should avoid supplements with either Vitamin A or beta carotene. We eat a fairly healthy diet, and he eats a ton of fruit and probably two servings of vegetables a day. I considered trying the enerprime superfood you recommend, as we travel once a month or so, but was hesitant due to the extra beta carotene put in. What are your thoughts? Craig asks: In the Q&A section of episode 139 you mentioned flax reducing the effect of estrogen. We secretly give our daugher, who just started puberty, ground flax for fiber. Anyway, should we be concerned with the effects of flax on her physical development? She doesn't get more than 2-3 tablespoons in the course of 24 hours. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)     --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Eric asks: Yesterday I completed my first 130 mile weekend with 80 of those moles on Sunday. I did the best I could regarding nutrition in the saddle but I'm still super hungry today. What would be your replenishment plan after an effort like that. Garmin said I burnt up around 4500 calories. I'm 174 6'1 & male if that helps at all. Emily asks: I am a runner, and I used to be a smoker. I recently quit, but I am wondering if there are any supplements or health tricks that might help my lungs heal faster and to keep me motivated from going back to the dreaded cigarettes? I have run a marathon while smoking, and I can't wait to run one smoke free! Melanie asks: Not to keep on the whole fasted morning exercise thing that you've talked about, but I'm wondering your opinion on a very small woman with no muscle to lose on what point should I actually be concerned of "eating" muscle. I'm 5'2 and 105 and approx. 17% body fat. I want to get to 13 - 14% body fat but don't need to lose much weight or any muscle. Should I even be doing fasted exercise? Is it okay to do fasted 45 minute strength training? Susan asks: Please Help! How can I tell if I'm truly in menopause or experiencing exercise induce amenorrhea. I lost my cycle at age 42 while doing heavy volume triathlon training while following a low carb vegetarian diet (stupid, I know). I got very lean. Dr. figured it was related to low body fat. Now almost 4 years later, it has not returned - I cont. to train heavily but BOOM! put on almost 10# even though I made no changes to my regimen. Now doc says it's menopause. My FSH wa 34.8 (menopausal) but my LH was low (7.2). I've tried to research but, from what I can tell, the levels are usually either both high or both low. Do my results mean anything? Todd asks: I switched gyms and have gone from chlorine pool to saline pool. I find my times are better and swimming seems a bit easier. Is this because of saline buoyancy? Gerry asks: Hi Ben, my best half marathon time to date is 95 min. However, in a 70.3 race, I've struggled to go faster. My best there is 115 min. What's the most effective way to train to improve that half marathon time during a 70.3 race? I'd like to do it under 100 min without fatigue or cramps. Janet asks: I work out 30 min. every morning six days a week. My workouts are 1 minute hard resistance/ cycling with cadence of 55 or 60 with my heart rate getting up to max 180 beats followed by recovery for 1 minute with cadence of 50 or 60 and heart rate around 150. Workout Is 30 min. Could you give me some ideas for other spinning workouts I could do? Can my body get too accustomed to this? Mike asks: I recently passed a kidney stone. My urologist had me do a 24 hr urine test, which showed high urinary calcium and oxalate. He has recommended I avoid Vitamin D supplementation (I'm currently taking 3000 IU daily), as well as decreasing coffee, cola, chocolate, nuts, spinach and green leafy vegetables. I don't drink cola and only 2 cups of coffee/day, but I really don't want to give up my big salad, handful of nuts, and small piece of dark chocolate. I've researched other "high oxalate" foods and it's a lot of otherwise very healthy foods that I love! What can you suggest for eating healthy while maintaining a "low oxalate" diet. Tony asks: I have recently finished my first 1/2 marathon, and my first Biathlon. My partner and I are signing up for a trail marathon in October. We are both in good shape and are dedicated to being better. I am a professionally diagnosed genetic hypertension person. I take two tablets each morning so that I will not stroke out. They are Procardia and Hyzaar. As I train, how should I approach supplements? What type of drug interactions do I need to be aware of? Melanie asks: Melanie asks: Hi Ben, What do you know about D-ribose? A health and fitness person that I follow sometimes said he just completed his own trial of ribose after being sent a sample and said after one week he felt a big difference in his energy level. Wondering if this is a good option to increase energy and what the drawbacks might be? Carlos calls in and asks: I am just a beginning amateur runner and am wondering if "regular" Multivitamins and Protein will be detrimental to my health. I hear you mention a lot of things about regular multivitamins and other regular supplements, but you never recommend them. Are they actually unhealthy for a beginner like me? By "regular" I mean, the more popular & affordable supplements used by a greater number of people such as products by Nature Made, GNC, and Optimum Nutrition. Are the supplements you recommend specifically for triathletes? My health is no where near a triathlete. Do I still need to take these "special" supplements or am I good taking the regular ones? I heard from another source I trust, that the differences between "special" and "regular" supplements are slim, and unless you are professionally training, the slightly higher benefit from taking special supplements is not really needed. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail [email protected] And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! Weekend Special Update: "How To Grow a Healthy Baby"

Weekend Special Update: "How To Grow a Healthy Baby"

In this September 27, 2009 free audio weekend update, Ben has a special guest on the show to discuss how to grow a healthy baby. Here is the letter that accompanies this episode, written by Jessa Greenfield from Bud Organics: "For the past six months, Marta Greenfield and I have been developing a fresh, new and exciting idea.  We have been working very hard on a business plan, marketing strategy, community surveys, focus groups and many hours of due diligence – and we now feel that we are ready to unveil this business and our product to you. The organic industry has grown by over 20% in the last three years, while the commercial food industry has suffered as consumers become more aware of where and how their food is grown.  Along with this growing trend, many parents are becoming aware that commercial baby food is not the best way to feed their babies.  Every parent wants the best for their baby, and it is becoming more apparent that what is on the shelf right now is not the best, and could actually be harming a baby’s fragile body. I experienced the same feeling as I searched for the right baby food to grow healthy bodies for River and Terran. I learned that the common method of preserving baby food is canning.  The problem with this is that the food is heated to a very high temperature to kill the bacteria that cause botulism. This heating method kills much of the nutrition in the food. An inspection of the ingredients in all the commercial baby foods revealed the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), which are crops generally made up of corn, soy, cotton and sugar beets. These have been linked to allergies, asthma, digestive ulcers, learning disabilities, cancer, low birth weight, infertility and antibiotic resistance! I didn’t want these for River and Terran, especially since most of the world has banned GMO’s based on multiple research studies. The baby food found on the shelves of most grocery stores is comprised of fruits and vegetables that were picked several months before ripeness, rendering the food tasteless and deprived of nutrients. Furthermore, harsh chemical preservatives are necessary to keep the food for many months as it is shipped around the country (typically grown hundreds or thousands of miles from the economy where it is finally purchased), and nutrient-stripped “fillers” such as corn, soy and wheat are added to thicken the product. Many of the pesticides found in non-organic commercial baby foods contain probable human carcinogens, neurotoxins and pesticides that disrupt the normal functioning of the hormone system, and some of the pesticides are considered “Category One”, which is the highest designation of oral toxicitiy. A 2003 Washington University study found that babies who were fed organically had six times fewer pesticides in their urine than those that were not fed organically! I learned that A) much of an infant’s digestive and neurological development happens in the first 2 years of life; B) an infant’s body is less efficient in eliminating toxins; and C) an infant’s digestive tract absorbs much more than an adult’s. This was the final straw. Our goal for River and Terran was to raise them in as healthy a manner as possible, and commercial baby food was obviously not the solution, for their well-being, for our local farmers, or for any of the other mothers in Spokane, Coeur D’ Alene and across the United States. So after countless hours spent in the kitchen, on farms, in the library, in grocery stores and with mothers from across the region Marta and I have established a solution: Bud Organics. In sum, Bud Organics will be a producer of frozen organic baby food. But what is most important to Marta and I is to provide an affordable, quality alternative to commercial baby food to as many babies as possible.  We want to give these vulnerable young bodies the best possible start they can get.  That means that their food should be incredibly fresh and 100% free of pesticides and GMO’s, with zero “nutrient-void” fillers, preservatives, and chemicals. How are we going to ensure this? We have established a relationship with farmers within a 200 mile radius of the Spokane and Coeur D’ Alene area. A majority of our produce will be bought locally from these farmers.  The reason for this is two-fold; 1) it helps with our local economy and our money stays in the area, supporting a sustainable region; 2) our food will not be picked months before ripeness, and shipped across the world, which would leave it tasteless and nutrient deplete. To ensure freshness, our food will be picked at the peak of ripeness and processed immediately in our certified organic kitchen in Spokane.  All the produce used will be “certified organic”, which ensures that there are no pesticide or herbicides sprayed on the produce that goes into our product. Not only will none of the common “filler” ingredients like flour, soy and corn appear in our food, but because our produce is organic, there will be no GMO's. We have also established a relationship with several local grocery stores (both commercial and organic), farmer’s markets, mother’s groups and baby stores who are anxiously waiting for the first line of Bud Organics to hit the market. And the unique method of preservation? We can ensure our product is more nutritious to our counterpart because we freeze our product. Freezing still gives a six month shelf life, but doesn't kill any of the food components, and instead locks in the valuable nutrients until the product is naturally thawed and ready for the baby to eat! The combination of frozen, fresh and organic baby food is a unique concept with a massive market, as the numbers in our business plan and market analysis have proven to us. We want to ensure that we fund farms that are growing and helping the local environment that we are leaving to our children.  Organically grown produce is a sustainable method of farming.  Rather than stripping the land of nutrients, organic farming grows soil by composting and applying natural matters (not chemical), planting poly-culture crops and letting their land “rest”. “But,” you may say, “My mom fed me non-organic food when I was raised and look at me!” That is very true, but today many weeds and pests have built up a resistance to the growing use of herbicides and pesticides, so more sprays have to be applied than what was needed 10, 20 or 30 years ago.  Also the FDA has said that the levels of pesticides and herbicides on commercially grown produce is OK for the adult consumer, but they have not taken in to account young children and infants.  Ultimately, there is a growing need for an alternative to commercial baby foods, and Bud Organics can be that alternative that parents are desperately searching for, exactly as I did. Despite knowing the danger that their baby faces, not every parent will be able experience what I experienced: spending hours at local farmer’s markets and then in their own kitchen, preparing, mixing and freezing their own organic, frozen baby food. And Bud Organics is the solution. Marta and I hope that you all find this as important as we do.  We have discovered that we find no better calling in life than to help our future generations grow up healthy and in a better, cleaner environment and economy. That is why we are asking for your help.  Currently, this idea only exists “on paper”, and to the small batches that we have provided to local mothers, who are calling us for more! To make Bud Organics a physical, tangible, vibrant living business, we will need funding. We would rather go to our friends and family first, because you are the people that we know and who have shaped us into what we are now. This letter is our plea for a little assistance to begin helping America grow healthy babies. In launching Bud Organics, the cost of commercial kitchen, produce contracts, marketing materials, certifications and licensing, production and delivery methods can add up quickly, and this is our primary hurdle to turning this viable idea into a growing enterprise. Rather than overwhelming you with our 27 page business plan, we would simply like to know if you are interested in helping, and we can provide you with any of the business, marketing and revenue details at that point. Thanks for all your love, your support and your hope that we can make a lasting positive impact in this world." Bud Organics is currently raising capital to launch the first line of organic frozen baby food!
