Based on anthropological evidence found in ancient humans, horsehair was used as one of the first types of dental floss. Toothpicks and chew sticks with sharpened points are also two of the tools early humans employed for interdental cleaning. In 1815, Dr. Levi Spear Parmly, a New Orleans dentist, created the earliest iteration of the modern dental floss. It was a thin, waxen silk thread that he encouraged his patients to clean between their teeth. This thread was readily available everywhere because it was used in tailoring. In 1898, Johnson & Johnson patented dental floss and began producing all types of waxed and unwaxed dental floss. Johnson & Johnson’s dental floss used the same silk material as surgical stitches. Dental floss has since evolved and now comes in different textures, materials, and flavors. but it can't work if you don't use it!

The Ancient Greeks and Egyptians often used gingerbread for ceremonial purposes. gingerbread was a favorite food of an Armenian monk, Gregory of Nicopolis, brought gingerbread to Europe around 992 AD and taught French Christians to bake it. Gingerbread was often used in religious ceremonies and was baked to be sturdy as it was usually molded into images of saints. In England, gingerbread biscuits were sold around the 17th century in monasteries, pharmacies, and farmers’ markets. The German version of gingerbread cookies is known as Lebkuchen are often heart-shaped and decorated with names and messages of love written in icing. Gingerbread houses become a fixture in Europe with the introduction of the Hansel and Gretel story. Now gingerbread cookies are popular in many western countries and especially baked around the holiday season.

There’s no denying our love affair with peanuts and peanut butter considering that over 75% of modern American households contain a jar or more of peanut butter. In 1991, when Hasbro overtook Parker Brothers, they developed many new versions of the game including Super Mario Bros, Friends, National Park, Millenials Disney and many more... and in 2008...the first-ever mobile edition of Monopoly was released for the iPhone. The soup is loved by many because of its thick and creamy texture and easy preparation. Culinary historians haven’t been able to pinpoint one clear origin of this soup. One narrative of its history dates back to King Louis XV of France who, in his fear of being poisoned, asked his servants to taste a potato leek soup he had been served, and by the time he started eating it, it had gone cold. Although the soup is traditionally eaten as a cold dish, you can vary the temperature according to your preference. Julia Child offered another narrative and called it “an American invention.” Her version claims that in 1917, a French chef at the Ritz-Carlton in New York City called Louis Diat, who grew up in a small town called Vichy in France, adapted his mother and grandmother’s potato and leek soup recipe, which led to the birth of Vichyssoise.

Hermit cookies are cookies made with exotic spices such as cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, and cloves, mixed with raisins and currants. they are similar to homemade gingerbread...why are they called hermit cookies?  a couple different theories: Some say that hermit cookies got their name because of how long they can be stored. Some also believe that this name evolved because the ingredients are simple spices that a hermit living in a forest would use. you can occasionally find them in specialty bakeries...or they are available via mail order...or you can make your own.

The story of candy begins in India. Around the 4th century BC, the Persians and Greeks learned that the people in India had, what they called, reeds that make honey without bees. These reeds were actually sugarcane and the Ancient Indians would boil sugarcane juice, turning it into individual pieces of sugar, which they called “khanda.” In the late 13th century...people used candy as a form of medicine, candy calmed the digestive system or cooled a sore throat. Candy first came to America in the 18th century from France and Britain. Very few colonists were skilled in sugar work, meaning only the wealthy were able to enjoy these new treats. In the 1830s, when the Industrial Revolution was in full swing, technological advances allowed candy to be accessible to more than just the rich.

It was after this airplane crash that the pre-flight checklist was introduced and adopted as a permanent, mandatory tool for pilots. Vittorio recovered and eventually became a king. The crisp grissino became the preferred bread in the Savoia household...and then all over Italy, then europe then made their way to America.

It’s a cake with an identity crisis!  when the Boston cream pie was first invented, cakes and pies were baked with the same kinds of pans, and most bakers at the time even used the words pie and cake interchangeably....It all started back in 1856 at the Parker House Hotel in Boston. (which is now the omni parker house) A clever chef thought, “What would happen if I put custard between cake layers and top it with chocolate?” And just like that, the Boston Cream Pie was born. The recipe is so simple —bake 2 yellow cakes, put custard in between the layers...and top with a chocolate ganache.  you can even make them as a trifle cake or eclairs or cupcakes.

Mulligans can be applied to our regular lives too...those with the determination to fight through the adversity of the mishaps of life. Necessity is said to be the mother of invention. The need for a caffeine fix was the impetus behind Dimitris Vakondios shaking up the first frappé at the 1957 International Fair in Greece. Vakondios was representing the Swiss-owned Nestlé food company at the annual international exhibition, where Nestle was introducing a new instant chocolate beverage made with milk and shaken in a shaker. Vakondios could not find hot water to make his usual Nescafe instant coffee during his break, so he improvised by mixing his Nescafe with cold water and ice in one of the exhibit shakers. Voila!  Today’s popular American versions of the Greek frappé contains milk, cream, or even ice cream, blended with instant coffee. in 1994 coffee shop owner George Howell invents the Frappuccino in Boston and trademarks the name Frappuccino, a name play on beloved international coffee favorites – the Greek frappé and Italian cappuccino....that same year Starbucks' ceo Howard Schultz buys George Howell’s coffee stores and the rest is history.

In 1560 coffee made its way through Europe and quickly became popular...by the 1600s coffee houses sprung up all over Europe, the beans followed the wave of colonization and found themselves in America. today there are lots of different types of coffee, differing in strength and richness...and we all can take coffee differently... black, with sugar, with milk, and even with flavoring syrups.

Jubilees are traditionally hosted to celebrate events like a queen's reign. cherries jubilee was first served in the 1800's at one of the jubliee celebrations for queen victoria...and the popularity skyrocketed.  This classic dessert is served a flambé, which means that the dish is literally set alight when it hits the table. Though dramatic and impressive, this fire doesn't really affect the taste of the dessert. After the cherries are poached in syrup, they are mixed with alcohol, traditionally brandy...When the dish is set on fire, this alcohol burns so quickly that the flames flare up and burn out without damaging the cherries at all. The end result is a warmer, more caramelized cherry concoction that still has some of that liqueur flavor left over.

An ebook (electronic book) is a book presented in digital format that people can read on dedicated e-readers, mobile phones, tablets, or P.Cs. Due to ebooks’ accessibility and immense popularity, many classics and old bestselling books have been republished as ebooks. Even many authors are now choosing to mainly publish their books only in ebook format. In 1949, a Spanish teacher, Angela Ruiz Robles invented the first automated book reader, the Enciclopedia Mecánica...her idea of an automated reader was born out of the desire to reduce the number of books that kids had to carry to school every day. today...only 7% of the American adult population read ebooks....so today is the day to give it try if you haven't before.

It is a variation of the French croque-monsieur sandwich that was first served in a cafe in Paris in the 1910s. The sandwich is said to have exploded onto the American food scene from its humble beginning in California when restaurants in and around Disneyland started serving it to customers of the park in the 1950's. most chefs recommend using a sturdy white bread like a sourdough that can support all of the ingredients that need to go in between and around it, so the sandwich doesn’t fall apart. it's a great fall sandwich perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

Early guacamole recipes only included mashed avocado and it became very popular due to the excellent health benefits of the avocado. Adding in the tomatoes and onions came later, which was a natural development since those are also native to the Americas. Eventually the lime juice was added, which originated in the Middle East but made its way west with the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
