Mark Garza of Embodyment / The Famine (Part Two)
Chapter 71: "Keep It In The Family" ...as read by Mark Garza of Embodyment / The Famine / Constant Seas
All in all, Mark Garza is happy with how his life has turned out. The drummer best known for his work with The Famine and Embodyment has become a successful business man, has a family submersed in musical talent and is still involved in producing quite a bit of music. In this second half of his story we discuss how record labels are what they are, his current project called Constant Seas and the slightly different goal that they have, music with his family and feeling accomplished with what he has achieved. This is an uplifting story that I hope is enjoyed as much as it is uncomfortable.

Mark Garza of Embodyment/ The Famine (Part One)
Chapter 70: "Our Shit DID stink" ...as read by Mark Garza of Embodyment/ The Famine/ Constant Seas
Mark Garza discusses building Dominoes Pizzas, Roger Martinez and being an honest musician in the studio. In the process of this interview Mark feels the need to call some people out which results in this being a long one that gets split into two chapters. We get to the bottom of why Embodyment went through such drastic changes and Mark's troubling position with Kris. Mark explains why he isn't on board with Nick Nowells' beliefs but he respects that Nicks'...beliefs takes....balls.... to say the least. We take a refreshingly real book at the Christian scene and some eye raising contractual obligations. All in all, Mark still respects Living Sacrifice for keeping it real. This was so great and I'm proud to bring it to you, rough edges and all. Whatever. Get over it. "I'll just leave that right there..."

John LaMacchia of Candiria
Chapter 69: "What Didn't Kill John..." ...as read by John LaMacchia of Candiria
YES! John Lamacchia of the almighty and seemingly indestructable Candiria tells us his chapter of the story. "BeBop" tells us of his early band Dead Air and Ken's band Intrigue and how that jam session resulted in John's enterance into the Candiria fold. John Lamacchia tells us about Ken's perhaps 500 deep song vault, the famous accident that should've killed the entire band, literally watching 9/11, prescription drug addiction, his band Spylocopa, new Candiria album with Metal Blade, working with new members Dan and Julio and sleeping in a childs sleeping bag on a dog mattress. Like Candirias' amazing music , there is something in this chapter for everyone. Thanks for listening.

Erik Mendez of Tourniquet (Part Two)
Chapter 68: "Do You Want To Play A Game?" ...as read by Erik Mendez (formerly of Tourniquet)
Here is the much anticipated follow-up to last weeks' show. Erik Mendez formerly of Christian metal powerhouse Tourniquet picks up with where we left off. We discuss a little more Ted, a few more stories and Erik and I step track by track through each song on Tourniquets' second LP "Psycho Surgery" and third LP "Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance". I am proud to close this chapter of the show. Erik was a biggie in a heavy-hitter band from my childhood. Thanks of listening.
I've also decided to release this entire video on the youtube channel. Check it out for extra footage and inappropriate behavior. https://youtu.be/CFdI0NnCJdI

Erik Mendez of Tourniquet (Part One)
Chapter 67: "Calling All Teds" ...as read by Erik Mendez (formerly of Tourniquet)
Erik Mendez.
Erik friggin' Mendez.
My lovely scattered few listeners...I'm not exaggerating when I tell you this is the least amount of control I have had during a discussion. Erik had so many entertaining things to say that I had to pull a double. We discuss everything from the demise of the quinessential Tourniquet line-up to taking fish antibiotics. We get acid dropping stories, almost fist-fighting in a bathroom in Germany, gun control, politics, playing guitar in the Philippines drunk as a twelve-year-old. Just enjoy a very rare appearance of the ever-elusive Erik Mendez. The only thing more amazing than his crazy guitar solos is what could possibly come out of his mouth next.

Kevin Leaman of Believer
Chapter 66: "In Leamans' terms" ...as read by Kevin Leaman of Believer
Oh man, oh man. Believer. One of my first favorites. One of my biggest influences. I got to talk to Kevin Leaman who plays guitar for them now. He tells us about meeting Joey Daub at the bank, joining the band and muscling through personal tragedy and illness to keep the band moving forward. We talk about our dogs, using coconut oil as a skin remedy (yeah...I'm serious) and what we can and most certainly can NOT expect from Believer in the near future.

Footnote: Needle 2 Square (1)
(1) “Needle 2 Square” …an ATSG footnote by Scott Mellinger of Zao
Scott Mellinger of Zao tells us a lil' bit about the Zao trip to Canada. Then Scott is joined by his daughter Sydney to tell us about an amazing run-in with Steve Wescott and Miles of Needle2Square. This is an amazing story.

Zao should get a website: https://www.facebook.com/ZAO.Official/?fref=ts
Intro music is called "Believe The Lie" by Umphrey's McGee and is used without permission (but they're probably cool with it)
You heard Zao play their song "Lies Of Serpents..." live from Amnesia Rockfest 2016 on 06/24/16...only the freshest metal for you, my lovlies.

Amy Sciarretto of Atom Splitter PR
Amy Sciarretto takes some time to talk to us about being too busy, the music industry, the Phillies, her passion for dogs, writing for a fashion blog, being an Eagles fan during the Michael Vick era and last but not least...a Glenn Danzig story. Oh yeah.
My condolences to the loved ones of those whose lives were taken in Orlando yesterday. My heart is truly broken for you and all who have lost due to these terribly misguided tragedies. If anyone is interested in further research of gun violence law and education I would advise this site (in PA) http://www.ceasefirepa.org/ or a similar corresponding site for your own state. I'm not saying outlaw anything. Settle down. It's just a website link.

Bjorn Bauer (Artist/Illustrator) Part Two
Welcome to the second half of the Bjorn Bauer story! If you haven't already please listen to the first half (chapter 62) of Bjorns' story before delving into this half. We get a bit heavier about dealing with boredom/depression and how Bjorn was able to steer all of it into a constructive outlet which became a career. Bjorn comments on how Zao was "meh" at first and how the Smashing Pumpkins became one of the most important bands in his development into who he is today. FOLLOW THIS MAN. Hit his site and do what you need to do to keep an eye on him. Show posters for Kowloon Walled City, Wovenhand and Intronaut. I am so glad this guy emailed me. He will ALWAYS be one of us. Bjorn Bauer (Artist/Illustrator) Part One
Artist and new friend Bjorn Bauer joins us for two weeks of stories of what it's like to be a missionary kid in search of music. Bjorns' story is a reminder as to how priveledged we are and take our resources for granted. Bjorn made due with barely anything and developed a hunger for music which became a passion for art. He tells how a UN soldier handed him a shoebox of dubbed cassettes with no art that changed his life. A random missionary woman handed Bjorn his first metal cassette...he doesn't even know why she had it with her that day. It only takes a spark to get a fire burning. I love this story and I hope you do too.

Jason Hamacher of Frodus, Lost Origins
Oh my God. I thought I'd have to tape up my ribs. Jason Hamacher of Frodus is about as unique as they come. Drummer of Frodus, Regents, Zealot (and about a dozen other bands you've heard of) joins me and guest host Seth W for TWO podcasts! This is the first of the two. I tried to make this one wrap up but Jason...is Jason. Story after story after story made me so thankful I didn't hit the stop button. Hamacher talks Frodus, his land breaking and nothing short of historic relationship with Syria, we get heavy Christian theology, the super touching story of Jason's life from 1999-2003 that changed all the directions, massaging Ben from Dillinger Escape Plan...just hang on. It was just too good for one podcast.

Sam West of Stavesacre (Scaterd Few, Violet Burning, Saviour Machine)
Happy Easter, you!
Sam West, drummer of Stavesacre joins the story with his story. This guy is a drumming hero of mine. Scaterd Few "Sin Disease" and "JawboneOfAnAss". Are you kidding me? Sam tells us about his family and how he is surrounded by musicians. Sam tells us about Stavesacres' upcoming album and producing it with the great Paul Figueroa. He covers his timeline, auditioning for the band AMEN, kid stories, how he came into Scaterd Few and how grumpy Omar was at the audition. Sam tells us about subbing for the Supertones, Plankeye, Audio Adrenaline, legal issues with recording Jawbone, first Saviour Machine show which led from their drummer not showing up. Seriously?
We get Sam's introduction to the film industry through our hero Matt Kitchens which led to his day job on The Real. Then for some reason I tell a story about a Violent Femmes show...not sure why I felt compelled to tell that story. I get to tell Sam that I used his "Speakeasy" drumset on my band's new ep. It'll be out VERY soon...like next week. There's a link below to a Johnny Cash cover off our upcoming EP "Paroles De Fue".
Plus the podcast debut of Nick Dinitto. You're gonna dir from the cuteness.

Chris Raines of Spitfire, Sunndrug
Chris Raines has played drums for Spitfire, Norma Jean and now Sunndrug. Chris was nice enough to lay out his timeline and resume for all to hear. We discuss having twins and coaching little league. Chris Raines tells us about getting Stretch Armstrongs' studio time at Trax East, the story of Spitfire, owning a record store, joining Norma Jean, starting Sunndrug with Jimmy, and being a prank call ninja. Check out his new band Sunndrug through the link below. Thank you SO much for making the Zao double-chapter the highest listens I've ever gotten. Onward and upward!

Dan, Jeff and Scott from Zao...again (Part Two)
Dan Weyandt, Jeff Gretz and Scott Mellinger of Zao continue laying out the entire upcoming album "The Well Intentioned Virus" track by track. This chapter will cover tracks six through ten, plus a very special remix of Xenophobe called "Xenophyle" by Joey Milligan of Anberlin. Zao just KEEPS GIVING! Don't forget about that giveaway that ATSG, Skull Toaster and MetalBandCampGiftClub are collaborating on. Listen to the rules and listen closely to the podcast. The answer was revealed in chapter fifty last week. Listen closely, follow Skull Toaster and WIN THAT POSTER!
Chapter 51 Music: all Zao from the upcoming album The Well Intentioned Virus (and working titles)
"Xenophobe": First single from the album. I take a stab at what I think the meaning would be. Jeff discusses a bit about pressing this to vinyl.
Never before released: "Xenophyle" remix by Joey of Anberlin. Why? Because Zao loves their fans. Just give us a few minutes to discuss the heroin stronghold on Pittsburgh.
Bonus clip of "Fear Itself" Did you know this song was left over from Awake? This is Dan's self proclaimed anxiety attack song.
"The Haunting Pools" (Megalodon): Holy crap, Dan's head is a scary place. A fever dream led to an encounter that Dan isn't quite sure how to even describe what he experienced. "It was broken when we found it; we found it like that." This is what happens when you live next to a cemetery.
"Observed/Observer" (Osiris): This is based off of a witch chant and inspired by something Dave Grohl said on Howard Stern. We learn about the sorry jar at work. Turns out Moby was right about carbon.
"The Sun Orbits Around The Flat Earth Witch Trials" (Unpleasant): What are we wrong about right now that we are accepting as correct? This leads us to a discussion about technology and who's running what.
"I Leave You In Peace" (You Are Not Free): You can pick sides and ague or you can just...walk away. What if you just don't care anymore? Zao is done with categories.
We then discuss the recording process at Treelady Studios, our dogs, the song writing process with members who live all over the place, the album artwork, label vs indie release, and Dan's daughter makes her first podcast appearance.

Dan, Jeff and Scott from Zao (Part One)
Fifty is a nice big round number so let's do something big, shall we? How about Dan Weyandt's first podcast?
Dan, Jeff Gretz and Scott Mellinger of Zao are laying out the entire new album "The Well Intentioned Virus" track by track. This chapter will cover the first five tracks. Seth W joins me to let you all in on a contest give away that ATSG, Skull Toaster (and even MetalBandCampGiftClub) will be collaborating on. Listen to the rules and listen closely to the podcast. The answer is in here.
Chapter 50 Music: all Zao from the upcoming album The Well Intentioned Virus
Xenophobe
"Weeping Vessel" (Working Title: "Leviathan") Dan's wife miscarriage and Jeff hears Dan's perspective for the first time.
"A Well Intentioned Virus" (Working Title: "Devil") Zao had difficulty in tracking this song. Lots of perspective.
"Broken Pact Blues" (Working Title: "Fire") Touching story about Dan's brother Matt...and Scott's dog...and Anthrax lyrics...and Scott's dog again...
"Jinba Ittai" (Working Title: "Flesh") The rider and the horse become one. Mortality. Jon Bunch. This gets heavy.
"Apocalypse" Scott tells us a bit of how the guitar led to the lyrics. We then somehow get into the Paris shootings and the tragic murder of Dimebag Darrell.
Xenophobe, again.

Eyal Levi of Creative Live (Daath)
Eyal Levi is a well known metal producer and toured the globe with his band Daath. Eyal has a very special Creative Live project starting March 7th called "Recording Metal: A Bootcamp" with the band Monuments. Eyal discusses in great depth how this is all going to work and his PR company Fresno Media chose ATSG as an outlet to discuss it. (Super cool; thanks Brian.) Eyal and I discuss having a more brutal sense of humor and how that helps deal with constant mispronunciations of his name (present company included). We cover the big topics like how we enjoy certain beverages, growing up with a genius orchestra leader father and how the metal bug bit him.
In the intro I thank Jerry Adams for his generous Patreon contribution and I play ya'll a little ditty from the new Slaves BC album.

Bill Meis of eOne (Alove For Enemies)
We are joined by Bill Meis of eOne. Bill is the former guitarist of the Long Island Facedown band Alove For Enemies...so he's been there. Now, he works with the likes of Black Crown Initiate, Zakk Wylde, Ace Frehley, and St. Louis' Black Fast. Bill and I discuss Cornerstone generator stages, the drive in the weekend warrior tour stories and how we would change nothing. We get to reflecting on being a part of the Christian music scene which was a LOT of fun to discuss. Bill ain't no dummy neither; he has taught english in Prauge. He articulates how working at a record label doesn't make you the enemy...something we all need to be reminded of. Bill is one half of the workbench podcast with our beloved Seth W. We close it out with a little baseball talkies and Bill Meis introduces me to the "baseball player name game".

Adam Robinson of Portlandia
Nope. Not kidding. Adam Robinson of the hilarious Portlandia shares his chapter with us...phone issues and all. (Gotta love technology.) Adam was influenced by his musician father who is still in three bands in his mid-70s! He tells us about his new teenage mutant turtles guitar, his mom fighting cancer, his first bands and earliest gigs, his love of the band jellyfish. Adam tells us how Portlandia came to be. It all came from a strange opportunity because "some dude broke his foot"...hey, ya never know. His story of the FIRST time he met Fred Armisen is hilarious and how he's still a fanboy of Steve Buscemi.
I am joined in the intro by Mister Werkheiser and I get to tell you all about the awesome experience I had at an Umphrey's McGee show. This has been a great week.

Kelsey Zimmerman of Blast Beat Network / Manutara
Kelsey "Chapstick" Zimmerman joins the story. Kelsey tells us how she went from a West Virginia drummer/rock fan to a New York City metal industry artists' spouse. She is part of the metal twitter family and is actually kinda hilarious. Kelsey works for Blast Beat Network and gives some insight on what metal advertising is all about. She is an accomplished drummer having won awards in her past; she now plays in the band Manutara. Kelsey's first spin was Zeppelin which CLEARLY leads a metal fan to Incubus...I know just listen. She reveals how she meets her husband (artist Aaron Zimmerman) but she still loves this one dude named Jasper even more. She also teaches my old ass about "mean mugging"...which I had to look up. Ugh. I suck. Another fun chapter from awesome industry folk who are worth the listen.
Seth W of the Skull Toasting W's joins me on the intro to tell us about a new podcast that I want everyone to subscribe to because it's hilarious. The new METAL MINUTE is exactly up the alley of all of this growing online community and #metalbandcampgiftclub supporters. Kris Myers of Umphrey's McGee
This snow-covered chapter is all about Kris Myers of Umphrey's McGee. Kris tells us about his first drumset at eight years old all the way up to the upcoming Umphrey's tour. Kris Myers talks about his college days of studying jazz, touring with his school jazz ensemble and playing weddings on the weekends. He covers the transition from his band Kick The Cat to coming into the UM fold. Then come the stories...Chris Poland (formerly of Megadeth), Buckethead, Les Claypool, Huey Lewis (!!!), Adrian Belew of King Crimson...a truly amazing list. But for as big of a band as Umphrey's McGee is there is a lot of diy to be discussed. Umphrey's McGee have started their own label and Kris has started his own production company called Good Night Nurse. This is good inspirational stuff.
The raw footage of this chapter is available on the youtube channel and you can get extra unedited footage that was edited out of the podcast. (Link is below)

Tessa Allen of Destroy Nate Allen
It's been said there are only two constants in this life and they are death and taxes. I found that to be a perfect title for this weeks chapter considering the two main topics.
Death: I hate to start off with a sad solomn note but I had to tip my hat to the late David Bowie. You will be missed, Starman. I wanted you all to hear Iggy Pop talk about him from 1990 and the famous clip from 1983 when Bowie calls out MTV for not playing black artists. We wrap up with Jimmy Fallon mentioning Bowie and we have a small moment of silence before moving on.
Taxes: Ok. More bad news. Taxes are due in about three months. NEVER FEAR! Onward to Tessa Allen of Destroy Nate Allen. We talk about how her and her husband met and started a punk rock revolution one unamplified show at a time. Tessa happens to be wicked smart at taxes and I thought a discussion on how a current DIY musician could learn a few things might be a good idea. Now that avenues such as Patreon and Kickstarter exist, folks need to learn how to deal. Who better than a folk punk rocker?

Tymon Kruidenier of Our Oceans, Exivious (Cynic)
Tymon Kruidenier is the former guitarist of legendary metal band Cynic. I could just stop right there. But I won't. Tymon was nice enough to take some time to tell us all about joining Cynic, starting his instrumental band Exivious and his new project Our Oceans. Tymon sings for the first time in Our Oceans and he tells us how that decision came to be. Tymon Kruidenier also tells us why he decided it was time to move on from Cynic. Trav then introduces "douche-chills" to Holland. We get pretty deep about how to manage emotions in music which is an interesting topic I've always wanted to discuss with someone. Consequently, Tymon admits that this was the most "interesting and more personal" interview he has ever done and that makes us very proud. This podcast is about making connections with artists we don't know and getting to know them in front of the listener. Take that, nay-sayers.

Mike Mowery of Outerloop Management
Mike Mowery of Outerloop Management is crazy busy. On top of Outerloop Management and it's sister label Outerloop Records, he runs an EDM label called Crime Kitchen. As if he isn't busy enough, he just launched Jabber Jaw Media, a new podcasting media network with a few Bad Christian guys. To think...this all started as Mike Mowery...former bassist of Good Clean Fun.
So yeah, Mike Mowery has done it all. Magic Mike Mowery was nice enough to squeeze in some time on his trip to Boston to talk to us about it all. GCF, touring with Refused, Snapcase, veganism, being straight-edge then non-straight-edge, soft tickets vs hard tickets, bumper cars...it's a longer chapter, but stick around to the end to hear some playful end of podcast chit-chat layered over some killer dub. Chris tells us all about his current band Know Nothing, how he met Steve Austin and joined Today Is The Day, programmed drums, touring and hanging out with Lemmy (yay! Lemmy stories!), fishing and crabbing and machine shops and simpler life.
And...oh my God...Bobcat Goldthwait possesses Christopher Debari and channels himself onto our show.
Stephen and Trav discuss a little about Neurosis re-issues and the new Carved Up. Guys, guys...seriously. The new Carved Up. Please go listen to the new Carved Up.

Joey Sturgis of Foundation Recording Studio
Award winning metal producer Joey Sturgis talks about coffee. Yeah he opens with coffee! Joey discusses his humble beginnings and tracking down The Devil Wears Prada for his early gigs. His discography includes pretty much everybody who's put out a metal album since 2008. There is some inspiring stuff in here. Joey gives a lot of perspective about what he believes the future of the music business will entail, which includes Apple Music and signing youtube artists. But in the end, Joey Sturgis is just a waiter.
Stephen and Trav open up with a funny story about Trav embarrassing himself at work due to this podcast. It is "last call" on the upcoming Timothy Henderson Warlord comp. We introduce a new band called "The Wolf And The Epitaph" from Canada. So much metal up in this. Peace.

Ben Sharp of Cloudkicker
Dude. Ben Sharp of Cloudkicker. I seriously can't believe how blessed I am with the guests Stephen and I have been able to get on this show. Ben Sharp is a bit tricky to book for a show. He's a commercial airline pilot so he's either totally home or totally not. I caught him at his new Pittsburgh home. Such great conversation. Ben Sharp took his show on the road with Intronaut. Ok wait, I mean his band WAS Intronaut. That's crazy enough, right? Intronaut is incredible...and Ben borrowed them for a tour. What a cool story!!! He talks a bit about his first, only, and as of now last (?) tour. What Ben Sharp is doing with Cloudkicker is the ultimate example of DIY. We respect that here at ATSG. Thanks to John Petkau for introducing me to Cloudkicker.
After some of the music stuff is resolved...we get deep. What a rewarding conversation. Ben is rad. He's full of love for his fellow man, including you. Take care. Bye bye.

Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice and Alex Kenis (formally) of Becoming The Archetype join Trav to discuss MEGADETH!!! Today is the 25th Anniversary of Megadeth's album 'Rust In Peace" and we are celebrating with a Megadeth party. We covered 'Holy Wars...The Punishment Due". Just because. We talk all things Megadeth and even poke fun at some of it. But it's Megadeth. It is part of our bloodstreams.

Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice
Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice joins the story with many of his own stories. Ya'll ain't gunna believe this one. LOTS of music in this chapter. We discuss Mark Fields, Stryper, live Quicksand and Hum. Trav embarrasses himself with a story that Bruce can't even remember. Fitzhugh talks about what he's doing now at Manhead Merch. We discuss a lot of older Living Sacrifice, DJ, early albums...lots of old school Living Sacrifice fans will dig this stuff. Bruce Fitzhugh was heavily influenced by the DC scene and it pokes it's head in a lot of places you may not expect it. Bruce gets into the R.E.X. debacle and what lead Living Sacrifice to Solid State (...turns out Brandon Ebel may be a stalker.)
Then...the news we've been dying to drop on the audience: it turns out we are at war. A Holy War. Bruce Fitzhugh discusses...the punishment due. Just listen all the way to the end. It'll make sense. Dave Mustaine AND Bruce Fitzhugh both love you. Take care. Bye-bye.
