Some cities and states have long restricted the construction of accessory dwelling units, or ADUs—also known informally as in-law apartments or granny flats. Typically, an ADU has its own kitchen, living area, and a separate entrance. It can be a standalone structure or a converted basement or attic, but it shares utilities with the primary house. He's been in the appraisal business for more than five decades. He started out in the 1970s with a small Bristol practice that covered England and Wales, then worked at several large firms after that. In 2010, he began a five-year stint as technical director of the International Valuation Standards Council, which is basically an international version of USPAP. Chris is also a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, which has been around since 1868.
