Controlled traffic farming to increase root growth of crops
Heavy farm machinery results in soil compaction, which can damage the root growth of crops and reduce crop yields. By using permanent lanes in the fields – known as controlled traffic farming – in the production system of organic vegetables, the yield can be increased.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johannpretorius/message Hosted on Acast. Maybe use a co-bot until the robot is truly autonomous’
There are many ag-robots for sale. Does this mean you shouldn’t buy a new tractor anymore? I don’t think so, robots are not a one-on-one replacement for tractors. Any farmer knows how to use a tractor. A new one, even when it’s a different type, doesn’t take long to get used to. That’s different with robots, even the ones that look like a tractor.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johannpretorius/message Hosted on Acast. Feeding the world sustainable in the Future
It’s a simple question: Will we be able to feed everyone if the population of the planet rises from about 7 billion people today to 9-10 billion in 2050? There is a desperate need for farmers to control rodents because they destroy 15% of the crops growing in African fields. The most common solution is to use poison. Some regions of the Eastern Cape were never truly out of drought- South Africa
My intention is not to introduce doubt to the current favourable rainfall forecasts for the 2020/21 production season, but rather to reflect on the scars of the previous year. While most regions received late rains and proceeded well, parts of the Eastern Cape did not get sufficient rains to improve dam levels. This was muted until recently, with now increasing reports of a potential “day zero” in Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johannpretorius/message Hosted on Acast. Re-imagining Africa's food future at the intersection of agriculture and conservation
Across Africa, agriculture is the primary source of livelihoods and the majority of households consume at least a portion of the food they produce. All too often, however, the way food is produced, distributed and consumed in Africa is at odds with the natural capital on which both people and wildlife depend. Unsustainable agricultural practices are driving biodiversity loss and leading to increased human wildlife conflict, land conversion and the loss of critical habitats, declines in water quality and quantity, soil degradation, and increased pollution. With Africa 's population expected to grow to 2.5 billion by 2050, there will be even more growing pressure to convert more land for agricultural production, further threatening wetlands, forests, grasslands, soil health, water quality, and the resilience of the smallholder farming communities that depend on them.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johannpretorius/message Hosted on Acast. Poor weather has caused less damage to global grain crops than feared
International price movements in these commodities do influence trading conditions in the domestic market to an extent. For rice, wheat and soybean meal, of which SA is a net importer, global market conditions matter even more. The livestock and poultry industries, which rely heavily on maize and soybean meal for feed, often bear the brunt of global grain market aftershocks--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johannpretorius/message Hosted on Acast. South Africa set to have the largest wheat harvest in a decade, and largest canola and barley harvest on record-
In a nutshell, the favourable rains that the Western Cape received in the past couple of weeks, and good soil moisture in other provinces has been of immense benefit to the South African winter crops. We can now safely say – with caution, of course, as the season is still at early stages – that South Africa will not only have one of the good summer crops seasons but a brilliant agriculture season. I have discussed elsewhere the good outputs coming out of the horticulture sub-sector, and also recovery in the livestock industry, which completes the statement I have made about 2020 having been a season of abundance in South Africa’s agriculture. The importance of research in agriculture- John Deere
Since the start of the agricultural evolution, the sector has been defined by research and innovation to increase productivity to meet the food demand of the world. More recently research and innovation include technology development that is adopted throughout the value chain, comprehensive and inclusive digital solutions, and very importantly ethical and safe practices – both for industry role players, consumers and the environment. In this week’s episode of Tech Terrain Tony Ndoro talks to two distinguished academics on the value of research for the sector. Matome Ramokgopa, Managing Director: Enza Zaden South Africa discusses the application of agricultural research on the African continent. You can also look forward to a discussion with Admire Mutsvario, Business Operations Analyst: John Deere Sub-Saharan Africa (JD SSA) and Hein Snyman, Territory Sales Manager: JD SSA on the 6M tractor, that is all about choice.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johannpretorius/message Hosted on Acast.
