The Future of eCommerce: Industry Leaders' Predications | #167
In this week’s special, mid-week episode of Add To Cart, we share a sneak peak of some of the content from eSuite’s eCommerce Accelerator student programme, which commenced on the 21st March 2022. This bonus ep includes the answers to a question Nathan posed to ten leaders in eCommerce, ranging from leaders to retailers to agency folk to consultants to journalists. Some of them have even been on Add To Cart before. We wanted them to answer one simple question for our Accelerator students - “what excites you most about eCommerce in the next five years”.As a bit of context, we have created the eCommerce Accelerator at eSuite to teach the foundations of eCommerce across strategy, marketing, technology, analytics, finance, supply chain and more. It’s a ten week program done 100% remote and designed to fit around work/life and general chaos. Our aim is to help upskill those at the start of their eCommerce journey, upskill those in retail who want to know more about eCommerce and help retail businesses build internal pipelines of eCommerce talent. What you’re going to hear today is one of the Industry Voice videos that our students will have access to throughout the course. As well as these videos there will be ten two hour live lessons, over 20 cheat sheets and templates, a load of curated eCommerce resources and a community to connect with your peers. You never know where that alone will lead! We’re also lucky enough to partner with Shopify for some hands-on experience with the platform and you’ll leave with your entry level Google Analytics certification. Horses Are Better Than Unicorns: The CitrusAd Story | #164
n this episode of Add To Cart, we are joined by the guy who used to play in Wayne Carey’s number 18 jersey at the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Nowadays, he is better known for having recently sold his retail media business, CitrusAd, to Publicis for $200m. Brad Moran is the CEO and Founder of CitrusAd - they monetize the digital shelf of eCommerce retailing sites. Or to put it simply, they take the old school grocery shelf buying and make it accessible for online retailers so they can generate additional revenue from the eyeballs they attract. And no doubt they were a healthy acquisition target - CitrusAd powers media sales and ad-serving for more than half of the top 20 retailers in the world. This includes Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Argos, Bed Bath & Beyond and here in Australia, The Iconic, Woolworths and Coles. As you’ll hear from Brad, retailers can earn anywhere from an additional $5K a month to $10m a month in revenue by making their website real estate available for bidding. Apart from getting a great overview on how CitrusAd works, we go into depth on the emergence of Amazon in Australia, why category terms are more powerful than brand terms and the “chasm of death” when it comes to selling the business that you have founded. Get Your Sheet Together: The Lad Collective Story | #160
In this episode of Add To Cart, we are joined by Bill and Ed Ovenden, brothers who have established the bedroom brand, The Lad Collective. But jokes aside, there is a serious side - they’ve developed a version of the product which is registered with the NDIS - National Disability insurance scheme which even includes braille sewn in. In this very entertaining conversation, Ed and Bill share the launch prank they did in the Brisbane river which got the PR machine pumping and their business started. We also discuss cease and desist letters, how they screwed up their first pre-orders and why Ed has his mobile number in the website footer. There are some gems in there too I promise. From Avalanches to Nipple Hugs: The Milkdrop Story
In this episode of Add To Cart, we are joined by Alex Sinickas who is the Co-Founder and Engineer at Milkdrop. Milkdrop is changing the way breast pumps feel for women, by redesigning the pump from the nipple up - and as you’ll hear from Alex, they have a much bigger mission at play. Established in 2019, Milkdrop has already attracted funding, won the Amazon Launchpad, worked closely with universities and won government grants. Today Alex talks us through her approach to product prototyping with her engineering background. We also discuss some of the ways Alex and the team are getting information on the size and shape of Australian women’s nipples - which includes getting flashed in public. Just a standard day at work really. And totally unrelated but very cool, Alex tells us about her time as a ski patroller where she had to use dynamite to trigger avalanches. Having worked as an Associate Advisor at Macquarie Bank for four years, James was acutely aware of a gap in the corporate tailoring market: he and his colleagues struggled to build a wardrobe of quality suits ready for daily wear at affordable prices. There was, he found, always a compromise on quality, fit or range, particularly for younger generations with less disposable income. The rest is tailoring history: James left the finance industry and established InStitchu as the leading player in made-to-measure tailoring, focusing on quality, affordability and fit. Combining his business acumen with an entrepreneurial flair and excellent sales skills he has helped propel InStitchu to the forefront of Australia’s competitive tailoring industry. In later years Robin developed his background in eCommerce, helping him recognise the opportunity in the Australian market for high quality made-to-measure, tailored suits at a reasonable price. Robin used this experience and opportunity to transition to the start-up world in launching InStitchu with James.
