65: The World with Richard Engel and Yalda Hakim

Lauren Layfield introduces The World with Richard Engel and Yalda Hakim on the series recommendation show Your Next Podcast. The idea for The World podcast stems from two events in the careers of its presenters. In 2007 Richard was invited to the White House for a private one-on-one meeting with President George W Bush to discuss Iraq and Middle East policy. It was Richard’s ability to be in the thick of the fighting while at the same time provide fast, accurate and wide-reaching analysis of what was happening that interested the president. Since then, Richard’s in-depth knowledge and expertise has continued to be in demand among influential figures across the globe – and it is precisely this insight we will be offering to the audience every week. In 2021, immediately prior to the fall of Kabul, Yalda received a call from the Taliban live on air. In a world exclusive, the spokesman assured Yalda that no one in the city would be harmed by their troops when they entered the city.  It was an episode that highlighted that Yalda is one of the best connected and well-respected journalists in the business – and the show will be drawing on her extensive contacts book to provide most knowledgeable and high-profile guests. Join Richard and Yalda for The World as they cross the globe from the mass migration routes of Mexico to the frontline battles of the Middle East as they report, probe and ask the questions to make sure you can really understand what is happening in the world today – and why it matters to you. Follow The World with Richard Engel and Yalda Hakim wherever you're reading this.

46: To Catch A Scorpion

Lauren Layfield introduces How to Catch A Scorpion on the podcast recommendation podcast - Your Next Podcast. To Catch A Scorpion: The dramatic hunt for one of Europe's most-wanted people smugglers, recorded as it unfolds. BBC journalist, Sue Mitchell, and former soldier and aid worker, Rob Lawrie go on a search for a crime boss: a people smuggler on the run, whose codename is Scorpion. He is one of the central characters controlling the transport of migrants from the European mainland into the UK. Barzan Majeed - codenamed Scorpion - leads the Scorpion gang. He's on international most-wanted lists. He started his criminal career in Britain and went on to build a smuggling empire which now spans the globe. An international police surveillance operation trapped more than 20 of his gang and almost netted Scorpion himself, but he was tipped off and escaped. Sue and Rob, two seasoned investigators, team up to try to do what the police have been unable to achieve: to find Scorpion, to speak to him, to ask him to account for his crimes and to seek justice for the families he has harmed. Their investigation takes them to the heart of an organised criminal gang making millions from transporting thousands of migrants on boat and lorry crossings that in some cases have gone dangerously wrong, causing serious injury and putting lives at risk. They witness his operation in action and record as intense situations unfold, where vulnerable people desperate for a better future, put their lives in the hands of ruthless and dangerous criminals. As they edge ever closer, they meet the people helping and supporting Scorpion and unpick the financial side of his business funding his luxury life. As they start to understand the man himself, can they garner enough clues to trace his whereabouts? You can follow How to Catch A Scorpion and listen to all of the episodes on BBC Sounds, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.
