Won't You Be My Neighbor Day - Welcome To The Neighborhood
Won't You Be My Neighbor Day is a celebration that takes place every March 20th. The day is dedicated to honoring, appreciating, and celebrating the late Fred Rogers, who was the beloved host of the preschool TV series "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood". The show aired from 1968 to 2001, and even though it hasn't been broadcasted in the last 21 years, it still holds a special place in many people's hearts. In fact, some still consider "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" as the benchmark for all other children's programs. The show is so iconic that those who grew up in the '70s and '80s undoubtedly remember watching Mister Rogers travel to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe and sing songs with his puppet friends.

Welcome To The Neighborhood with Brad Meltzer
“Ordinary People Change The World” is the friendly, fun biography series written by Brad Meltzer that inspired the PBS Kids TV show Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum. One great role model at a time, these books encourage kids to dream big.
In the new book, “I Am Mister Rogers,” the beloved children’s television host becomes the 31st hero in the New York Times bestselling picture book biography series for ages 5 to 9.
The book’s author, Brad Meltzer, has stopped by for a podcast visit to tell us all about this neighborly new addition to the “Ordinary People Change The World” series, and I could not be happier about that.

Eliot Daley - Show Writer of Mister Rogers Neighborhood
Welcome To The Neighborhood
Welcome To The Neighborhood: A Mister Rogers Tribute Podcast
I’m your host, Rick Lee James of RickLeeJames.com and I run the Mister Rogers Quotes Twitter account found @MisterRogersSay.
As we again walk into this podcast neighborhood, we want you to know that no matter where you are from, you are welcome here. I’m glad to be your neighbor. Every daughter, every son, every tribe, and every tongue, in the Spirit of Fred Rogers and the life of welcome that he lived, welcome to the neighborhood.
This week in the neighborhood, we’re having a visit with Eliot Daley.
About Our Guest (In His Own Words)
Eliot Daley
www.eliotdaley.com
My life’s work spans multiple causes and enterprises. Early in my career I taught and counseled at both the high school and college levels, was a chaplain (Middlebury College) and a parish minister, while simultaneously studying the social impact of TV. Realizing that children’s exposure to the world through TV (not a feature of my own upbringing in the 40s and 50s) would dramatically change their social and emotional and informational environments, I pursued all the available research on the subject and shared what I learned by producing workshops and writing articles on the subject for various national publications.
As part of my ongoing research into children’s programs, I encountered the then-fledgling production of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” in 1969 and set up a meeting with Fred Rogers to learn more about it and to write an article about his program and work. We spent a weekend together with our families and realized instantly that we were comrades-in-arms. Shortly thereafter he asked me if I would consider joining him as his co-writer and executive head of the company, and I eagerly accepted his invitation.
In the early years, I wrote 15-20 of the 65 programs we produced annually, but my management responsibilities for the ancillary non-broadcast products (books, records, educational materials) eventually displaced my time for writing scripts. Production of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was recessed in the late 1970s after nearly 500 episodes, and I went on to undertake other pursuits. But of course Fred and I remained intimate friends all the rest of our lives and conferred often about matters both the serious and silly.
Later, I founded or co-founded several consulting companies. The first of these provided counsel to philanthropists, foundations and major corporations like AT&T to optimize their charitable contributions. Another of my companies developed long-range strategy for health care organizations including Mayo Clinic and Johnson & Johnson. Later, I was a leader in several medical technology companies, from which pursuits I retired to devote myself to full-time writing.
I maintain a blog (“The Daley Almanac”) and am the author of Father Feelings (William Morrow and Pocketbooks), Sick and Tired of Being Fat (HarperCollins and Hazelden), numerous articles and Op-Eds and letters to the Editor. I have completed manuscripts for two more books, Taking Your Lumps (a lessons-learned-in-business memoir) and Formerly Called ‘Retirement’ (reflections on the psychological transition to a world beyond the realm of employment).
I hold the A.B. and M.A. degrees in the social sciences and education, respectively, from California State University at Fresno and the Th.M. degree in theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary (Presbyterian). I am married to the Rev. Patricia Daley, and we are the parents of three adult children engaged in non-profit pursuits to heal the breaches in creation. In addition to spending time with my family and other friends, my personal delights include tennis, sailing, golf, travel, theater, music, books, auto racing, fireworks, worship, kite-flying, writing, singing, and daydreaming.

It’s been a little while since we had a visit to this podcast neighborhood, but I’m so glad to tell you that this week we have guests; singer-songwriter JJ Heller and her husband Dave Heller. In addition to making music together, they also hosted the podcast, INSTRUMENTAL with Dave and JJ Heller.
JJ Heller Bio
At some point in our lives, we all want someone to believe in us, to remind us there is beauty in the world, and to tell us that everything’s going to be ok.
THERE IS A CHILD IN ALL OF US, AND THAT’S WHO JJ HELLER MAKES MUSIC FOR.
JJ writes thoughtful intimate songs that feel like balm for the soul. Her soothing voice and inspiring melodies blend with poignant lyrics to stir the hearts of listeners of all ages.
In 2017 JJ began regularly releasing a new song on the first Friday of each month. It’s a strategy that helped her grow from 800,000 to over 15 million streams per month.
In addition to releasing monthly singles, Heller is busy working on her orchestral I DREAM OF YOU albums, I Dream of You: CALM, JOY, SLEEP, LOVE, and coming this November, I Dream of You: CHRISTMAS.
Few musicians have the privilege to look back on 20 years of full-time music-making, but as far as JJ Heller is concerned, she’s just getting started.
JJ has released covers of Fred Rogers’ music before, and her new single, Neighbor, is a song that I feel Fred Rogers would have strongly resonated with.

A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR A NEIGHBOR - Sculptor: Paul Day
Paul Day has spent over twenty years developing a highly personal approach to figurative sculpture with a particular interest in representing the figure in architectural space using high-relief, an art form that combines drawn composition and fully rounded sculpture.
In 2019, Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, commissioned Paul Day to create a commemorative sculpture of Fred Rogers for the Campus. Mister Rogers was their most famous Alumnus and very well known in the United States for having created and animated the famous “Mister Rogers’...
On October 28th, 2021 The 360-degree sculpture titled A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR A NEIGHBOR was unveiled. It depicts Rogers surrounded by children, hand puppets from his show, lyrics from the series’ theme song and the show’s Neighborhood Trolley.

(Special Guest David Newell - Mr. McFeely)
This week in the neighborhood, our special guest is Mister Roger’s Neighborhood’s Very Own Mr. McFeely, David Newell.
Serving Mister Rogers Neighborhood since 1967, David Newell played Mr. McFeely, the Neighborhood’s cheerful “Speedy Delivery” man. He was Mister Rogers’ most frequent visitor. When there was a knock at the door, there was a good chance it was Mr. McFeely in his mustache, cap and vintage blue uniform, bringing a package, a film, or a visitor.

My guest today is Tim Madigan. In a journalism career spanning more than three decades, Tim has written for the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Politico, Reader's Digest, and for thirty years the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Tim's books included the critically acclaimed The Burning: Massacre, Destruction, and the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921; and a novel of the Greatest Generation and the aftermath of World War II, Every Common Sight.
It was a 1995 assignment for the Star-Telegram that led to Tim's interview with Fred Rogers, the icon of children's television, and a close friendship between the two men that last until Rogers' death in 2003. Tim's memoir, I'm Proud of You: My Friendship With Fred Rogers, is an intimate account of Rogers' human greatness, and a testament to the healing power of friendship.
That transformative relationship and Tim's own experiences as seeking and healing human being remain at the heart of his work. More than a decade after it was first published, I'm Proud of You continues to inspire readers around the globe, and Tim continues to speak of Mister Rogers and matters of the heart to varied audiences around the nation.

Hello Neighbor! with Special Guest Matthew Cordell - A World Kindness Day Special
Hello Neighbor! with Special Guest Matthew Cordell - A World Kindness Day Special
To help celebrate World Kindness Day (Friday November 13th), we are sharing this conversation with Matthew Cordell, Author and Illustrator of "Hello Neighbor", The Authorized Picture Book Biography of Fred Rogers.
About Hello, Neighbor! The Kind and Caring World of Mister Rogers
Groundbreaking in a quiet, generous way, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood introduced a generation of children to the wonders of the world in the comfort of their own living rooms. Fred Rogers took young viewers to art museums, introduced them to different professions, and talked through difficult subjects like losing a loved one, or experiencing parents' divorce, with compassion and reassurance. Share that deep respect, care, and quiet joy in the day-to-day with the only authorized picture book biography of Fred Rogers—lovingly created by Caldecott Medalist Matt Cordell. Lively, colorful illustrations explore Fred Rogers' early life and the events that led him to create his enduring show. Exclusively published archival photographs, provided by Fred Rogers Productions, offer a behind-the-scenes look at this historic show and the people whose hard work made it possible. A brief biography of Mister Rogers and a history of the show is included, as well as a note from author-illustrator Matt Cordell about his inspiration and longtime admiration for Fred Rogers and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Welcome To The Neighborhood Election Day Special: What Do You Do With The Mad That You Feel?
Welcome To The Neighborhood Election Day Special: What Do You Do With The Mad That You Feel?
In the United States it's election day and for many of us it's a time of strong feelings and great tension. No matter who wins, there will be many who are filled with great joy and many who are filled with great anger and disappointment.
I'm very much concerned about what we do with those strong feelings like joy and anger so I recorded this episode to (hopefully) help us find healthy ways to deal with our anger by using some valuable lyrics from Fred Rogers.
I hope you find this show helpful even when it isn't election day. Let's all work to find ways use our strong feelings to love each other well.
Thanks for listening,
--Rick Lee James

You Are My Friend: The Songs of Fred Rogers - Daniel Knox Talks About His Latest Album
You Are My Friend: The Songs of Fred Rogers - Daniel Knox Talks About His Latest Album
This week is a special bonus episode with Chicago based singer and songwriter Daniel Knox
Daniel Knox has a commanding baritone voice that can invoke both power and tenderness interchangably. On his latest album, You Are My Friend: The Songs of Mister Rogers, Knox captures the care and generosity of Fred Rogers music, honors the original spirit of the music of Mister Rogers, while infusing it with the complications adding his own musical idea.
Hearing the childlike, welcoming lyrics of Fred Rogers through the sound of a strong baritone voice makes this album unique and original among the library of Mister Rogers tribute projects that have released over the years.
Knox’s blanket of simple piano melodies and distinctive vocals invite the listener into a playful atmosphere where they can grapple with that joys and fears that that confront both adults and children alike. You Are My Friend is like a Mister Rogers album for contemplative adults that helps us to laugh, cry and reflect on and navigate the joys and sorrows of adulthood. It’s like musical medicine for weary souls who long to see the world again through the eyes of a child.
About The Album:
You Are My Friend is made up of 11 songs from Mister Rogers Neighborhood, recorded for piano and voice. Kit Shields sings the part of Lady Aberlin to my Daniel Tiger on the duet “Sometimes I Wonder If I’m a Mistake”. The beautiful cover art is by Lake Wilson.
The music video for “Some Things I Don’t Understand”, directed by Lily Ekimian and A.T. Ragheb of Dog Door Films, is a simple and beautiful portrait of Rogers’ hometown of Pittsburgh.

Joy Ike is a Pittsburgh based singer and songwriter whose music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to great female musicians like Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and Regina Spektor. Her polished, precise and graceful music defies easy categorization.
A write-up on NPR's All Things Considered says "The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop...a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small."
Recently Joy released a brilliant cover song and music video for the Mister Rogers Neighborhood Theme song, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”. She has stopped by our podcast neighborhood for a visit today and I am just thrilled have her with us.

Bonus Episode: Shea Tuttle Exactly As You Are: The Life and Faith of Mister Rogers
Bonus Episode: Shea Tuttle Exactly As You Are: The Life and Faith of Mister Rogers
Fred Rogers fiercely believed that all people deserve love. This conviction wasn’t simply sentimental: it came directly from his Christian faith. God, he insisted, loves us just the way we are.
In the book, Exactly as You Are, Shea Tuttle looks at Fred Rogers’s life, the people and places that made him who he was, and his work through Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. She pays particular attention to his faith—because Fred Rogers was a deeply spiritual person, ordained by his church with a one-of-a-kind charge: to minister to children and families through television.
Tuttle explores this kind, influential, and sometimes surprising man: the neighborhood he came from, the neighborhood he built, and the kind of neighbor he, by his example, calls all of us to be.

Bonus Episode: A Conversation with Tom Junod
This week we are pleased to bring you a bonus episode in cooperation with Sony Pictures and the new movie "A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood".
This week in the neighborhood we are joined by award winning journalist, and Senior Writer at ESPN, Tom Junod.
Tom has written a number of memorable pieces over the years but he is perhaps best known for a profile article he wrote on Fred Rogers for Esquire in 1998 titled, "Can You Say. . . Hero?". That Esquire article serves as the framework of the movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood in which Tom Hanks portrays Fred Rogers, and Matthew Rhys portrays Lloyd Vogel, a character loosely based on Junod.
The movie opens in theaters everywhere this November.
Special Thanks to Tom Junod and Sony Pictures for helping us bring this wonderful conversation to you this week.

Episode Eight: The Self-Control of Fred Rogers
Welcome To The Neighborhood: A Mister Rogers Tribute Podcast
Episode Eight: The Self-Control of Fred Rogers
In 1968 Fred Rogers wrote a song that asks some important questions:
"What do you do with the mad that you feel
When you feel so mad you could bite?
When the whole wide world seems oh, so wrong...
And nothing you do seems very right?
What do you do? Do you punch a bag?
Do you pound some clay or some dough?
Do you round up friends for a game of tag?
Or see how fast you go?
It's great to be able to stop
When you've planned a thing that's wrong,
And be able to do something else instead
And think this song:
I can stop when I want to
Can stop when I wish
I can stop, stop, stop any time.
And what a good feeling to feel like this
And know that the feeling is really mine.
Know that there's something deep inside
That helps us become what we can.
For a girl can be someday a woman
And a boy can be someday a man."
-Fred Rogers

Welcome To The Neighborhood: A Mister Rogers Tribute Podcast
Episode Seven: The Gentleness of Fred Rogers
"Most of us, I believe, admire strength. It's something we tend to respect in others, desire for ourselves, and wish for our children. Sometimes, though, I wonder if we confuse strength and other words--like aggression and even violence. Real strength is neither male nor female; but is, quite simply, one of the finest characteristics that any human being can possess."

Welcome To The Neighborhood: A Mister Rogers Tribute Podcast
Episode Five: The Goodness of Fred Rogers
This week in the neighborhood, our subject is Goodness.
“In the external scheme of things, shining moments are as brief as the twinkling of an eye, yet such twinklings are what eternity is made of -- moments when we human beings can say "I love you," "I'm proud of you," "I forgive you," "I'm grateful for you." That's what eternity is made of: invisible imperishable good stuff.”
