#5 Unlocking the One-And-Done Secret for Sepsis Management with Matt and Fitzgerald
How do medical devices contribute to the critical treatment period for patients with sepsis, and what design features are most important in these situations?
Welcome to another episode of Transformation Nurse Academy!
Today, we're diving deep into the world of medical device innovation with two very special guests—Matt and Fitzgerald. Matt, the founder of Reavill Med, shares his personal journey and the motivations that led to the creation of life-changing medical devices after the tragic loss of his father. Fitzgerald joins the conversation with his expert insights, bringing us stories all the way from Johannesburg, South Africa.
Together, we navigate the complexities of needle stick injuries, the latest advancements in dialysis access, and the powerful impact of new technologies on infection prevention. Get ready to explore the nuances of the sepsis bundle, the challenges medical professionals face in critical care, and the revolutionary "one and done" device that promises to change how we approach vascular access and phlebotomy.
Whether we're discussing the technical details of device modifications, the intricacies of IV therapy, or simply why a southern accent makes a difference in patient care, this episode is packed with rich discussions.
So let's get started!
Three Key Takeaways for Healthcare Professionals:
🔹Sepsis Management Revolution- Understand the vital role of the new "one and done" device in the 'golden hour' of sepsis treatment to accelerate care and save lives.
🔹Infection Prevention Priority- Discover how changes in hospital reimbursement policies are steering a massive shift towards infection prevention with securement devices and protocols.

About Matt Reavill and Samuel Fitzgerald:
Matt Reavill is the Founder & President at ReavillMED based in Plainfield, Illinois.
Previously, Matt was the Regional Sales Manager at Progressive Medical and also held positions at Medegen, ALARIS Medical Systems, Sempermed USA, US Medical Instruments, BD.
Samuel, originally from South Africa, entered the construction industry in London after high school. His journey led him to low-voltage electrical systems, which he continued in the US after meeting his wife. In 2007, while studying electrical engineering and expecting twins, he crossed paths with Matt.
Their meeting was sparked by Samuel's quest for information on an IV securement device. Matt introduced him to ReavillMED, sharing a video and details about central venous catheters. Intrigued by the potential to improve a life-saving process, Samuel and Matt collaborated on the Trauma PICC, a device that enhances patient outcomes by simplifying catheter insertion.
Over the years, the device evolved, addressing challenges like site selection, contactless insertion, and prevention of medication leakage. Their goal remained consistent: keeping the initial peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) patent, minimizing needle sticks, and facilitating easy escalation to longer catheters when needed.
Their innovations in fluid insertion aimed to replace occluded lines without additional patient discomfort, spanning applications in oncology, TPN, PPN, and sepsis. A decade of progress showcased their commitment to advancing medical solutions for better patient care.
