Ep. 187: EmptyMania

Hal, Lindsey and Danielle are back together… in a manner of speaking. They’re hanging out remotely just like 90% of wrestlers in the world.  This week we finally got to see what WWE is going to do about WrestleMania in the wake of safety concerns with COVID-19. The show will take place the first weekend of April as scheduled, with some major differences; It will take place in an empty Performance Center over the course of two days.  While this is probably the best way to have a show on this scale in the midst of a pandemic, we’ll speculate as to how you have the biggest show of the year without any fans present. Plus, we’ll explain why AEW has already gotten the empty arena shows down a bit better than WWE so far… even if their other shortcomings are still present. Plus, the long awaited rebirth of Gronka-donka-doo! The Three Count Danielle and Lindsey put over Big E’s antics on Twitter. Hal put over MJF on AEW. Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Hal has an upcoming show live streaming over the internet on Sunday March 22nd benefiting the New York and LA food bank. Tickets are sold here! Ep. 185: Rap slack and Edge’s career

Hal and Lindsey discuss AEW’s Revolution PPV. The match that undoubtedly stole the show was Kenny Omega and Hangman Adam Page defending the titles vs. The Young Bucks. It exemplified the strong story-telling that Kenny and his cohorts are capable of. We’ll discuss why we love the match so much and why we can’t wait for what’s next. Plus, we’ve got a new AEW World Champion! Jon Moxley has reached the mountain top after beating Chris Jericho. And while we’re excited about him as champion, we’ll also discuss why the match didn’t quite reach the heights set by the rest of the PPV. But all is not entirely great in the land of the elite. Lindsey will explain why she’s become disheartened by the AEW women’s division, especially compared to its Wednesday night counterpart on NXT. The Main Event He was a star for more than ten years. He understood heel psychology better than almost anyone of his time and eventually became one of the biggest stars of the WWE. Between tag teams, 5 second poses, championships, a live sex celebration (Yeah, that really happened) there’s never been a star like the Rated R Superstar, Edge. And now that he’s back, we’re going to discuss our favorite moments from his career. The Three Count Lindsey put over the upcoming Elizabeth Warren's dog Bailey.. Julian put over John Cena attacking Edge. Danielle put over Johnny Gargano's interview with Mauro. Hosted by Hal Lublin and Lindsey Kelk. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 184: Thank your local Bella

Danielle’s once again in the throes of some real-deal TV work and hasn’t had much time to watch wrestling. But, luckily we’ve got a Lindsey Kelk here to chat things up. That includes NXT, which is shaping up its road to WrestleMania and TakeOver nicely. Bianca Belair lost to Charlotte Flair. With a number one contendership ladder match coming up at TakeOver, will that be Bianca’s next opportunity to shine? Or is she destined to regularly edge close to glory without going all the way? Plus, it looks like WALTER and Imperium want the Finn Balor rub (don’t we all though?). Vague shades of fascism aside, it should be incredible. We’ll discuss it in full. And AEW has their first PPV of 2020 coming up this month. Between the Bucks vs. Page & Omega and Nyla Rose vs. Kris Statlander, there’s a lot to get excited about. But Lindsey thinks that there are a number of things that need to be improved if we want to continue whole-heartedly embracing the land of the Elite. All of that… and yeah, we’ll talk a little bit about Goldberg being the new Universal Champion. The Main Event Just as we expected, Nikki and Brie Bella are the latest inductees to the WWE Hall of Fame. And just as we expected, a whole bunch of people are big mad about it. We’ll explain why the Bellas are such transcendent stars worthy of such an honor as we recap some of the biggest moments from their careers. The Three Count Lindsey put over the upcoming New Japan cup tournament. Julian put over Nyla Rose on Talk is Jericho. Danielle put over NXT’s Melanin Magic PPV. Hosted by Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 181: The Wrestling Cinematic Universe

Pod Dad Hal Lublin is finally back! And in the absence of Danielle and Lindsey, he’s hanging out with producer Julian Burrell to discuss his retrospective thoughts on all the wrestling he’s missed. That starts with the Royal Rumble and the two winners of the titular matches. Lindsey and Danielle really and enjoyed the Rumble, a sentiment Hal and Julian share… if a little less enthusiastically. But where they completely differ is their assessment of the men’s Rumble. They’ll explain why they thought the use of Brock Lesnar worked for them so well. Plus, Cody Rhodes delivered what Hal considered the most affecting wrestling moment Hal has ever seen on television. And Julian is excited to see the collision of the Queen, the NXT Champion and the EST of NXT. And we’re also proud to introduce you to the Wrestling Cinematic Universe and all of the possibilities that it holds for our heroes (hint: a lot of dentists). The Three Count Julian put over Frank Turner's wrestling fandom and Dr.Chris Raynor’s explanation of Edge’s surgery. Hal put over the Britt Baker's promo. Hosted by Hal Lublin and Julian Burrell Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 179: Hornin' it up

Danielle and Lindsey are ready to breakdown the final shows before WWE’s Royal Rumble show! No matter how we’re feeling about the current WWE product, the Rumble always seems to draw back the audience at large. Why? Because it’s the formal start of WrestleMania season and consequential stories in WWE! But there are also stories in AEW to take note of. But things seem to be going awry in the house that Tony Khan built, at least from the storytelling perspective. We’ll explain why we’re feeling unsure about Dynamite’s direction, while still voicing our optimism that their eventual move to two nights a week could be great for them. Finally, we’ll talk about NXT. It continues to be a great and successful show week in and week out. Between the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and Keith Lee as the new North American Champion, there’s a lot to love. And that includes Finn Balor’s....appearance in his match this week. We’ll explain. The Three Count Lindsey put over Becky Lynch on WWE Backstage. Julian put over these pictures from Keith Lee across the years in WWE. Danielle put over the Big E's dream match from the Feel The Power podcast. Hosted by Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 178: Wrestling should be FUN w/ Darnell Mitchell

This week, Danielle and Lindsey are joined by Darnell Mitchell. He’s one of the heads behind the Brooklyn-based wrestling promotion Uncanny Attraction. Like any respectable wrestling organization, Uncanny Attraction will be in Tampa Bay on WrestleMania week (April 2nd at 11PM). He’s also ready to announce the show’s main event: Effy vs. AEW’s Sunny Kiss! Tickets are going to be available soon! Darnell will tell us all about what it was like to go from a fan to a professional in the industry, which independent wrestlers and promotions he’s most excited to see and why so many wrestlers need to step up their suit game. The Main Event Tessa Blanchard was known across the international wrestling scene as someone whose star was only going to burn brighter. She’s been a champion in multiple organizations, including the current World Champion of Impact. But in the midst of her greatest accomplishment, word has come out from multiple wrestlers that Tessa has a history of being a bully and a racist. It’s a lot to take in, but we share our reactions.  The Three Count Darnell put over artist Lauren Moran and the MV Young No Ring Death Match Extravaganza  Lindsey put over this week’s episode of NXT, especially the debut of Mercedes Martinez. Danielle put over the latest episode of Being the Elite with Kris Statlander and Orange Cassidy. Hosted by Danielle Radford, Lindsey Kelk and Darnell Mitchell. Ep. 177: Wrestling Kingdom 14 w/ James Durbin

Buy the new Tights and Fights shirt at maxfunstore.com! This week, Hal and Lindsey are joined by James Durbin. He’s a known singer, actor and American Idol participant who’s also a HUGE wrestling fan. But a major blindspot in his fandom has been New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 14.  For the first time ever, this event was split into two days of extremely long cards. There thankfully was no noticeable drop in match quality across both shows, but it cannot be understated: This is a LOT of wrestling and watching it all will take at least a little bit of patience. In that spirit, we take a look at some of the major matches, including the champ-champ efforts of Tetsuya Naito, the heelish tactics of Jay White and KENTA and discuss whether or not Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho’s appearances mean we should expect more collaborations between NJPW and AEW. The Three Count James put over The New Day Podcast Feel the Power. Lindsey put over Jushin “Thunder” Liger’s retirement ceremony. Julian put over the press conference with Jushin and Tiger Mask. Hosted by Hal Lublin, Lindsey Kelk and James Durbin. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Tights and Fights Ep. 176: Full Jellicle

Don’t let that final segment on RAW fool you; there was actually a lot of really great wrestling to end 2019 and kick off 2020! Buddy Murphy and Aleister Black continue to impress in their second outing, Andrade and Zelina are back on track with the United States Championship in tow AND MJF cut another fantastic promo. But it’s not all good news: AEW’s production has continued to slip in the past few months. We’ll examine why the company’s picture-in-picture strategy isn’t working for us. Plus: after the women’s championship fatal fourway, one thing has become very clear: the company has ONE woman with a clearly defined character and it’s not the champion Riho.  All of this… plus we’ll somehow find a way to mix in conversations about Cats throughout the show. Misandry Corner The Bobby/Lana/Rusev story has been maligned by the audience for a while now. But this week it somehow took a turn for the worse with Liv Morgan getting involved as Lana’s former lover. How bad is this story for everyone involved? Is anything being salvaged? And most importantly: Who would play these roles if we recast them all as men? Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 167: Only slightly inappropriate

This week Lindsey and Danielle embrace the last week of wrestling before Blood Money Jewel and its fall out is upon us. Speaking of the Saudi show, news came through prior to our recording that Natalia and Lacey Evans would be allowed to take part in a match at the event. However, this doesn’t solve all of the issues we have with the show. Far from it. On the positive side, Finn Balor now has an exciting new direction as a heel for the first time in his WWE tenure. We’ll explain why this is the breath of fresh air that will endear him to fans now that he’s back in NXT. On AEW there’s still a lot ot enjoy, including Cody forming the Nightmare family to take on Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle. But there are a few things to take issue with: For one, why has Kenny Omega not gotten the portrayal as a superstar that he’s more than capable of? And for another, why is the women’s scene in such a holding pattern, especially when compared to NXT’s incredibly deep counterparts? The Three Count Lindsey put over Asuka’s YouTube Channel. Julian put over the Big Game Leroy. Danielle put over the Sunny Kiss and Dustin Rhodes’ tag match on AEW Dark. Hosted by Lindsey Kelk and Danielle Radford. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 166: A rabbit hole of WWE history w/ Bill Hanstock

This week Hal and Lindsey are joined by Bill Hanstock. He’s known for his wrestling writing in Uproxx and SBNation. But now he’s got a new project: a book about the complete and comprehensive history of WWE. Yeah. In addition to getting all the details about that, we’ll also talk about a bunch of recent wrestling programming. For one, RAW had no women’s matches. It certainly didn't make the show easier to watch, especially as the build to the Saudi show is in full swing. What did get us excited though was the debut of Humberto on Monday nights. AEW Dynamite continues to keep us entertained. One common criticism has been that each show has only one women’s match. How long are we willing to give the company the benefit of the doubt? We’ll explain. Plus, our thoughts on what they could continue to do from a production standpoint to truly stand-out from WWE and, yeah, we’ll weigh in on the Marko Stunt’s "controversy". In contrast to AEW, NXT has maybe as deep a women’s roster as they’ve had in years. Multiple stars are vying for Shayna Baszler’s women’s championship. We’ll discuss who should get the nod as number one contender and explain Roderick Strong’s cast-type in film. The Three Count Lindsey put over Emily Pratt’s article about the Daddy’s of WWE. Hal put over the Bayley’s heelish actions on twitter. Hosted byHal Lublin, Lindsey Kelk and Bill Hanstock. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 165: Everybody’s eatin’ it

Show:  Tights and Fights This week Danielle, Lindsey and Mike break down tons of Wednesday night’s AEW and NXT. This week Danielle, Lindsey and Mike take a look at the October 9th editions of AEW Dynamite and NXT. Perhaps the biggest story detail from AEW was the introduction of Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle. Sammy Gueverra, LAX and Jake Hager are on the list of Le Champion. We explain our reservations with one of the members faction and marvel at the sight of Jericho as the very top guy of a company. In terms of matches, Private Party upsetting The Young Bucks was a fantastic showcase of tag team wrestling and it’s great to see Dustin Rhodes after such a lengthy career. We discuss it all, including what Mike’s son thinks of the show after his first exposure to wrestling. And on the WWE front, NXT continues to showcase tons of great matches. Most notably, Lio Rush is the new Cruiserweight champion and Kushida had an outstanding match with WALTER. But surprisingly, the thing we’re most excited for from WWE was on Smackdown. And it had to do with the deaths of some inflatable tubemen The Three Count Julian put over WOW Women of Wrestling. Lindsey put over the tribute to the fallen Bayley Buddies. Danielle put over NWA Powerr. Hosted by Danielle Radford, Lindsey Kelk and Mike Eagle. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 164: Get them nuts w/ Jacquis Neal

This week Hal and Danielle are joined by Jacquis Neal from the Culture Kings podcast. After months of build up, AEW and NXT are officially live in primetime on Wednesday Night on TNT and USA, respectively. Naturally, the two shows are going to be compared a lot but, more importantly, they’re going to be appreciated for the entertaining programs that they are. We do a bit of both, looking at the matches that we enjoyed, nitpicking the things that need work and explaining why Wednesday night may be the only night in wrestling we unabashedly look forward to. Of course, WWE’s flagship shows also made headlines after the premier of Smackdown on FOX and Hell in a Cell on Sunday. Smackdown started with a lot of positives on the presentation front; but a lot of that promise was washed away by Kofi Kingston lose the WWE title to Brock Lesnar in seconds. As if that wasn’t enough, Seth Rollins retained the Universal Title against the Fiend after a convoluted finish to a chorus of boos. We take a look at the shortcomings of both shows (and not without pointing out the great parts of the shows as well). Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford, and Jacquis Neal. Ep. 162: Crashing Crowns

This week Hal Danielle and Lindsey take a look at the first week of NXT on USA. Tons of great wrestling got a chance to shine, including Candice LeRae who now has a shot at the NXT women’s title on Oct. 2nd. Not only that, but the Undisputed Era now holds every men's title on the brand. With Roderick Strong defeating Velveteen Dream for the North American title, it looks like NXT has its central antagonists for once their on for a full two hours. Plus: with NXT now on live TV, more people under the WWE umbrella will be stopping by Full Sail for the exposure. That included WALTER with the Imperium faction from NXT UK and Oney Lorcan and Lio Rush from 205 Live came through. We’ll explain what we thought of their showings. All of this, plus who on RAW and Smackdown got our attention on the “season finales” of the shows as they prepare for major reboots? Is Carmella the master of the long con? And have King Corbin and Chad Gable found the grounds for a real rivalry? The Three Count Hal put over Carmella winning the 24/7 championship. Lindsey put over Kairi Sane. Danielle put over Ali in Hawaii. Hal LublinDanielle Radford, and Lindsey Kelk. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. Ep. 161: Clash of Champions w/ Rachel Millman

This week Danielle and Lindsey are joined by Rachel Millman. She’s one of the founders of the "WrestleSplania" podcast. She’ll explain how her journey into wrestling led to her starting the podcast and how she plans to reboot the show in the coming weeks. Clash of Champions This past weekend, WWE held "Clash of Champions," the final PPV before they air three live televised wrestling programs every week. Seth Rollins may have lost on of his championships, but he is still the Intercontinental Champion. And while his match with Braun was good, if a little rushed, the bigger story is his next opponent: Bray Wyatt aka The Fiend. Is Braun being lost in the shuffle with all of this? And does WWE have things pointing in the right direction for its most significant title with competition closing in? And speaking of new opponents, Brock Lesnar has challenged Kofi Kingston for the WWE title. Is this the end for the dream run? And how do we feel about Brock being the one to end it? Plus, Baron Corbin is your new King of the Ring, The Revival continue their career resurgence and why Danielle sees Randy Orton as a buffer version of certain celebrity (hint: 500 Days of Summer) The Three Count Rachel put over Jake Atlas vs. Priscilla Kelly at Rise. Lindsey put over Yamashiro restaurant in Hollywood. Danielle put over MJF on Twitter. Danielle Radford, and Lindsey Kelk. Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun. They’re collectively known as The Nobodies on their YouTube series where they breakdown wrestling events. Bearica and Ariel are both relatively new fans while Accident Report has watched since childhood. And since they started their show they’ve learned something very important: the venn diagram of the world of drag and the world of wrestling is a very large circle. They’ll explain why the entertainment mediums are so identical. They’ll also discuss how they feel about modern WWE, what it’s been like to cater to an underserved population of wrestling community and why it feels like international wrestling promotions are finally starting to gain a greater amount of attention. The Nobodies are hosting the Mx. Nobody Pageant beginning August 8th at Brooklyn Bazaar. The Three Count Lindsey put over Pro Wrestling EVE establishing a trade union deal for its wrestlers. Ep. 153: Mike Quackenbush on high-spot pornography and the joy of wrestling.

This week, Hal Danielle and Lindsey are joined by Mike Quackenbush. He’s the head of the Philadelphia-based promotion Chikara. In just a few months, Chikara will be host to the largest pro-wrestling tournament in the world: King of Trios. Mike will tell us about which teams he’s excited to see. Mike is also known as a reputable trainer in the wrestling business. He’s worked with tons of well-known stars like Drew Gulak and Aleister Black. Even though he’s still a busy guy, he says that going to the performance center is his equivalent of Christmas. He’ll explain why. Plus, his thoughts on All Elite Wrestling, how the modern landscape of wrestling is shifting so much and why he believes in balancing quality story-telling with high-spot pornography. Mike Quackenbush’s newest project is the YouTubeTil We Make It where he tries to give potential wrestlers (and even fans) a look at the best practices and etiquette to begin your professional career. Ep. 151: Rob Van Dam on his career, concussions and CBD

This week, Hal, Danielle and Lindsey are joined by Rob Van Dam. Through his 30 year career, he’s been seen in dozens of wrestling promotions and been a champion for just about all of them. He’s perhaps best known for his time in WWE where he was a multiple time Intercontinental and tag champion before he beat John Cena for the WWE Title in 2005. RVD is also known for being one of the original founding performers of Extreme Championship Wrestling. While he doesn’t think ECW content will ever be welcome in mainstream TV again, he does think there’s still one particular fledgling company that is embracing the philosophies that made it successful. Rob will discuss his career highlights, why he wants to keep wrestling in spite of having such a long career and why he’s dedicated to finding CBD treatments for concussions. RVD’s documentary Headstrong is available now. All of that, plus New Japan’s G1 Climax, Impact Wrestling’s Slammiversary and whether or not WWE’s main roster is getting left behind in a Summer full of awesome wrestling events. Ep. 150: Tights and Fyter Fest

This week, Hal, Danielle and Lindsey discuss AEW’s sophomore event, Fyter Fest. While, there was tons of great wrestling and promos throughout the entire show, there was also an unprotected chair-shot to the head Cody Rhodes that overshadowed a lot of the other good things on the card. But that’s not to say there wasn’t stuff to be excited about too. MJF, Jungle Boy, The Lucha Bros. and others had great showings and we’ll discuss what stood out to us… and what we’re still not sure about. Plus, it appears that WWE has finally revealed what their creative response to AEW’s presence will be going forward. Late last week, it was announced that Paul Heyman will be responsible for the direction of RAW and Eric Bischoff for Smackdown. We’ll look at what changes are evident for the future of the product, whether we’re into them and question their newfound desire for minor obscenities from promos and Corey Graves. All of this… plus one more look at the G1 Climax at the stories that will come to a head at wrestling’s biggest tournament of the summer. Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford, and Lindsey Kelk. Ep. 148: "One Fall" w/ David F. Walker and Brett Weldele

This week, Hal and Danielle are joined by David F. Walker and Brett Weldele. They are the writer and artist (respectively) behind the new comic series "One Fall." The book is all about a third-generation wrestler who fights for survival and profit in a world of supernatural creatures who all want the honor of killing him in the ring… again. They’ll tell us all about their project, how they became wrestling fans and the finer points of the best bars to watch wrestling at. The Beatdown: Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero (2005) Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero were both credited for helping popularize a lucha libre in the U.S. like few, if any, ever could have. They were best friends and frequent partners. And in their final series of matches, the stakes got more personal than most rivalries in WWE ever do. It was a contest that featured beat downs, betrayals, great promos and the custody of children. Hal and Danielle will look into what made one of Eddie’s last major storylines work so well… and why it wouldn’t have worked if they both weren’t so good. The Three Count Danielle put over Effy’s Twink Gauntlet and Stokely Hathaway’s quest to regain his CD player. Hal put over Daniel Bryan’s commentary during Heavy Machinery’s match. Ep. 144: An Encyclopedia of Women's Wrestling w/ LaToya Ferguson

This week, Danielle and Lindsey are rejoined by LaToya Ferguson. She’s the author of the brand new book "An Encyclopedia of Women’s Wrestling: 100 Profiles of the Strongest in the Sport." In it, she details some of wrestling’s most important and impressive female athletes through the years, from Act Yasukawa to Wendi Richter. The panel will also discuss Money in the Bank. As WWE’s first PPV after WrestleMania, it had the responsibility of setting the tone for the future narratives of the company, which it did in some ways we’re excited about and in others that we’re less sure about. In good news: Bayley won the Money in the Bank ladder match and used it on the same night to become the Smackdown Women’s Champion. But now that Becky is one title short, what will the story be going forward? Should Bayley and Becky have a match or is The Man going to focus on RAW and take on Lacey Evans.
