The Sound of Accra Podcast
Business
Adrian Daniels
In 2019, Adrian Daniels had a brainwave to launch a podcast platform to showcase Ghanaian excellence to the world. The internet is already crowded with content from Ghana: YouTube, Social Media pages, etc. However, after hosting 2x Networking Events during Christmas 2018 & 2019 in Accra for the Global African Diaspora, Adrian noticed a lack and desire for networking, whilst meeting many creatives and entrepreneurs from around the globe. In January 2020, The Sound of Accra Podcast was born. Powerful interviews with Top Founders, Entrepreneurs and Creatives from Ghanaian heritage or interest, leaving listeners with meaningful takeaways for life, business and career. New episodes weekly. Fintech Fridays #4 | Ghana is fast moving to the forefront of Cryptocurrency adoption finds new Binance survey
On the fourth edition of Fintech Friday, we're diving into the exciting world of cryptocurrency adoption in one of Africa's leading countries, Ghana. In this episode, we'll explore how Ghana has emerged as a fast-growing economy and a hub for technology and startups, with a notable surge in smartphone adoption. We'll also delve into the results of a recent Binance and Pulse survey, revealing Ghana’s position as a front-runner in cryptocurrency and blockchain adoption on the continent. Join us as we discuss the potential impact of this trend on Ghana's financial landscape and what it means for the future of digital finance in Ghana. Quote from Operations Manager of Binance Africa, Yande Nomvete:“Our pulse survey really underscores how Ghana is embracing blockchain technology and how open they are to engaging on the topic,” says Yande Nomvete, Operations Manager for Binance in Africa. “The quiz achieved more than 20,000 impressions with a reach of more than 20,000 users over a three-day period, which is exceptional.”The quiz was designed to unpack some of the core beliefs and understandings held by users in the region. From asking how important it is to have financial literacy in the context of cryptocurrency to unpacking how cryptocurrency can positively impact financial adoption in Africa, the survey prioritised core issues affecting companies and consumers. More than 50% of respondents believed that the significance of financial literacy in the context of cryptocurrency meant having an understanding of market trends, avoiding investment scams, and making informed decisions, highlighting a deep awareness of the rigour required to make the right investment choices with this currency.More than 70% of respondents believe that cryptocurrency can positively impact financial inclusion in Africa by fostering innovation in the fintech sector and promoting economic growth, and yet the vast majority (more than 70%) are aware that using cryptocurrency requires vigilance and an awareness of security protocols.“It was impressive how many respondents chose the correct security answers to questions around best security practices and approaches,” says Nomvete. “For example, when asked what was not a recommended security practice for cryptocurrency users, more than 70% said sharing private keys with friends. Users in the region also immediately identified the importance of anti-money laundering (AML) best practices in mitigating fraud, and the value of doing extensive research into reputable cryptocurrency exchanges before handing over their funds (60%).”Ghana has a solid understanding of cryptocurrencies and the importance of building up a portfolio with a trusted service provider that has a reliable and proven reputation. Binance is determined to play a role in driving the adoption of trusted, reliable, and accessible cryptocurrency to the global market. Understanding the importance of crypto and how it can benefit the economy is key to ensuring growth, and working with a platform that prioritises security is essential to building a thriving portfolio. Binance has strict protocols, follows industry-leading technical measures, provides advanced data privacy tools, and has embedded security into the foundations of the organisation.“Our understanding of the market wedded to the impressive cryptocurrency savvy of Ghanaian users equals long-term success for investors in this country,” Reference links from today's episode:https://watra.org/ghana/<a...

On Today's Fintech Friday edition, Adrian explores the Ghanaian Cedis reaching an all time low of one pound sterling to eighteen point seventy-five Cedis (£1 to GHC 18.75 Cedis). Bloomberg reports:"Ghana’s cedi is in a record-breaking weakening cycle. The currency hasn’t gained versus the dollar in the past 22 trading sessions, the longest streak according to data compiled by Bloomberg going back to 1994. The cedi traded 0.3% weaker at 13.9310 by 1 p.m. in London. It’s declined 14% this year, a slump beaten only by currencies that have been devalued, including the Egyptian pound and Nigerian naira."Dr Andrews Ayiku also writes:"The falling cedi has made it more difficult for SMEs to function successfully and compete in the market. These enterprises frequently operate with thin profit margins and insufficient means to hedge against currency changes, making them more vulnerable to the negative effects of the cedi’s depreciation."How the declining Cedi is impacting businesses:Increased production costsCredit Loan difficulty Challenges with cash flowVolatility in input pricesDecreased competitiveness in export marketsInflationary pressuresListen to previous Fintech Friday Episodes:Fintech Friday #3 | Empowering Women in Crypto and Fostering Financial Inclusion | Yande Namvete (Binance Africa)Fintech Fridays #2 | Funding Raised by Start-ups in Ghana and Africa since 2019 | Biggest African Startup Deals of 2023Fintech Fridays #1 | MoMo in Ghana hits a Trillion | Bank of Ghana suspends transfer services | Cedis depreciates in time for December in Ghana tourists | Car Loans to be available through Ghana CardSocial Media Let us know your thoughts! Vodafone Ghana rebrands to Telecel | The Future of Ghana Telecommunications | Medase Vodafone! (PodBites Ep. 42)
Vodafone has finalised the sale of its majority shares to Telecel Group (70%), with the Ghanaian Government holding 30% of the shares. This week, they have announced the rebranding of Vodafone Ghana to Telecel, where they had the rights to the Vodafone Ghana name up to February 2024.  Margherita Della Valle, Chief Executive of Vodafone, said: “The sale of Vodafone Ghana to Telecel Group is a further step in simplifying Vodafone’s African portfolio. Since entering the market in 2008, Vodafone has helped to develop Ghana’s critical network infrastructure supporting customers, businesses and communities.” The Vodacom Group (The subsidiary that manages Vodafone's African Portfolio), also takes a step back from other countries including Egypt and Kenya.  Vodafone Ghana were not able to compete effectively with MTN, which has the largest marketshare of telecommunications in Ghana and arguably across Africa. MTN own over two-thirds of the market share (66%) in Ghana, whilst Vodafone owned less than one-third (17%).  Vodafone made a significant contribution to the African market by launching M-Pesa in 2007, Africa's most successful mobile money service, providing access to financial services for millions of people Let us know your thoughts!
