321. Mentorship and Networking at All Stages with J. Ryann Peyton
321. Mentorship and Networking at All Stages with J. Ryann Peyton
Today, my guest is Ryann Peyton. Ryan serves as the Director of the Colorado Attorney Mentoring Program (CAMP), as well as Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice in the great state of Colorado. She is a former litigator (as she'd like to say, a reformed attorney) and she now lends her skills as an advocate for professionalism, diversity, and equity in the legal field, particularly through her role as the director of these two programs. We talk about a wide range of subjects, including the partnerships that they’re developing with these programs in the commercial world outside of the association. She’s delightful, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Ryann discuss:Finding your passion (and having permission to change your mind). What Bar Associations can do to bolster and sustain the next generation of lawyers. How CAMP helps its constituents. Being part of programs to build mentorship and networking to make a difference. Key Takeaways:If law firms and bar associations don’t recognize the changes in technology, they will not be able to sustain the profession and those practicing in it. At any stage of your career, it is important to have a mentor that can help support you with where you are and where you want to go. All the skills in the world will not overcome bad behavior. Who you are and your reputation mean everything. Well-being is a core component of professionalism. "The law has to shift; the profession has to shift. It has to meet the needs of modern clients; it has to meet the needs of modern lawyers." — J. Ryann Peyton Get in touch with J. 320. Fitting Wellness Into Your Life with Carl Ficks
320. Fitting Wellness Into Your Life with Carl Ficks
Today my guest is Carl Ficks. Carl is a 30 year litigator who has now pivoted and started a new business called No Surrender that focuses on wellness and physical wellbeing for attorneys and other professional services types. We're going to talk about why fitness and wellness is so important to attorneys and the legal profession, and some of the really sobering statistics about the extent to which we aren't paying attention to our own health needs as we try and navigate the world of being a solo or small firm practitioner. I will tell you, in all candor, this is going to be kind of a true confessional episode, because I really feel like I'm the poster boy for the kind of client that Carl is trying to reach. So we're gonna get a little personal here. I hope you don't get tired of hearing my own shortcomings, but I think that's the best way to illustrate what Carl is trying to do and what services he has to offer. There is something for everyone here. In this episode, Neil and Carl discuss:Taking care of your health for busy professionals. The first steps to wellness (hint: start small). Tips and tricks to establish consistency in your wellness. The positive, upward trend in lawyer health and wellness. Key Takeaways:You are your own best asset. You need to treat it the way that you would treat your brand new dream car. Self care is not selfish. If you don’t take care of yourself, you will not be able to show up as your best self in your communities or with your clients. Celebrate how far you’ve come and the changes that you make along the way. You can’t cut corners in the practice of law, and you can’t cut corners in fitness. "Focus on the gain, not the yawning gap that may lay in front of you." — Carl Ficks Get in touch with Carl Ficks:Website: https://carlficks.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carlrficksjr/ 10 Simple Steps to Get Back in the Game: https://carlficks.com/free Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 319. Achieving a Gold Standard Client Experience with Charlotte Isaac
319. Achieving a Gold Standard Client Experience with Charlotte Isaac
Today, my guest is Charlotte Isaac. Charlotte is an expert in the client experience; she looks at helping professional services companies, such as law firms, develop their end to end client experience, and primarily assisting them in automating the whole process as best they can, often using a platform called Dubsado. Although she's not affiliated with the company, she uses the Dubsado platform to help professional services providers to automate the entire end to end client experience. We talk about what's involved in defining that experience, and how you can translate that using a tool such as Dubsado. I think it has a lot of relevance for US attorneys, and I hope you enjoy listening to Charlotte Isaac as much as I enjoyed having the conversation. In this episode, Neil and Charlotte discuss:The client experience from start to finish. Identifying shortcomings in your client experience. Being consistent in your client experience. How Charlotte uses Dubsado to help her own clients (and how you can too!). Key Takeaways:You are the expert at your own client experience. Understand what you are already doing and from there you can flesh out that experience. Find the balance between automation and personalization. With software, you can automate some of that personalization and framework so every client is getting the best experience possible. Engage and connect with your clients even beyond just their case. It will give you a clearer picture of your client and help you to understand how you can amplify the client experience and better serve them. Build your client connection where, even when automated, it looks like it is coming directly from you. You do not want to send things to “Dear Client”. "Building empathy and a connection with your clients is a huge way to build referrals in a very non-sleazy way." — Charlotte Isaac Get in touch with Charlotte Isaac:Website: https://charlotteisaac.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/charlotteisaachq/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlotteisaachq/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.au/charlotteisaachq/ Enroll in Charlotte’s FREE Course: https://charlotteisaac.com/tle Reference: Dubsado: https://www.dubsado.com/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 317. Cracking the Code to Attracting Talent with Jonathan Merel
317. Cracking the Code to Attracting Talent with Jonathan Merel
Today, my guest is Jonathan Merel. Jonathan owns a family law practice in the Chicago area that has experienced some pretty phenomenal growth as of late, now reaching 17 attorneys and support staff that are associated with those attorneys having started as a solo practitioner, and really grew as a law firm pretty quickly. One of the things we're going to spend a fair amount of time talking about is how to attract talent to your law firm, because one of the things that most people are complaining about these days is their inability to find qualified candidates for the jobs that they do have open. Jonathan seems to crack that code a little bit. I think there's something to be learned from this interview, and I hope you get something out of it.In this episode, Neil and Jonathan discuss:Growing Jonathan’s firm from a solo firm to a firm of 17 attorneys. How to attract talent to your law firm.Creating a culture where people want to be. The onboarding and transition process. Key Takeaways:Build your book of business from the beginning. You never know if you’re going to want to go on your own or how it can further help in your career even if you stay in big law. As you are learning how to be a lawyer, take note of what you do and don’t want your own practice to be like. A personal one-on-one in an interview is important. You wouldn’t invite them to interview if they weren’t a good attorney, you’re looking to see if they are a good fit for your firm’s culture. You need to take the time to focus on the business, not just in the business. That is how you are going to grow your firm and attract and retain the best talent. "Marketing is not just about targeting clients, it's about targeting talent as well. I believe that by creating a good brand and a culture and an image, that will ultimately attract good talent." — Jonathan Merel Get in touch with Jonathan Merel:Website: https://chicagodivorce.com/ Email: [email protected] Show: https://www.merelfamilylaw.com/media/podcasts/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-merel-6629353/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. 316. Investing Across Borders with Lauren Cohen
316. Investing Across Borders with Lauren Cohen
Today, my guest is Lauren Cohen. Lauren is an attorney originally from Canada, who now is located in South Florida, and licensed to practice law in two countries, which I think is pretty cool. She is the founder of a number of different businesses, all focusing around her primary mission - investing across borders. Her practice areas deal with all the different issues that people who are conducting business across borders have to deal with, whether it be immigration, finance, law, relocation services, business, commercial transactions, and more. Anything having to do or touching upon the transaction of business across international borders is something that Lauren and her team spent a lot of time helping their clients with. It's a niche practice area that is very broad. Seems to be a contradiction of terms, but I think that summarizes it pretty well. In this episode, Neil and Lauren discuss:How Lauren fell into immigration law and created her full service company for immigrating to the US or Canada. The business of practicing law.Being a lawyer running a business versus being an entrepreneur who is not a lawyer. Removing yourself from the day to day running of the firm to build stronger procedures. Key Takeaways:Unless you're working as a lawyer in a firm, where everything is handled for you, you’re going to have to learn to run a business. Through failure you find success. You don’t know what you don’t know and what you do know is less than you think. Collaboration and business relationships can change the game for your law firm. Being in touch and being available can be both a blessing and a curse in your firm. "It's always about collaborating and building trusted relationships and knowing that you don't know everything. You need to be able to say and acknowledge that and bring in team members that complement what you do and can help you to build a stronger, scalable business." — Lauren Cohen Get in touch with Lauren:Twitter: https://twitter.com/eCouncilInc Website: https://laurenesq.com/ Website: https://realestateacrossborders.com/ Email: [email protected] Show: https://laurenesq.com/latest-episodes LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ecouncilinc/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/investing_across_borders/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 315. Keys to Productivity with Demir Bentley
Today, my guest is Demir Bentley, a productivity coach! Now, I am the poster child for someone who needs help in becoming more productive. I like to think of myself as productive, but my Achilles’ heel is planning. I am not a good planner. And that is where Demir really shines. This interview to me was personal and mind blowing. He has some really great ideas on how to take that giant leap, just one step at a time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. In this episode, Neil and Demir discuss:Demir’s journey from a background of burnout and overwhelm to being a productivity coach. Unique challenges the law industry has in regards to productivity. The necessary customizations of solutions and willingness to change. Planning your week to win your week and structuring it as a reward. Key Takeaways:The biggest hangups in the legal community to becoming more productive are the billable hour and the this-is-how-it-is-isms. Leave everything you touch 1% better for just 3 months. And you will be better than you have been in years without realizing it. Making changes will take less time than you think it will - you just need to start. The smallest thing you can do to maximize your productivity is to plan your week every single week. "If you keep working on the things that you're willing to work on, it's just a matter of time before you get the willingness to work on the things you weren't willing to work on." — Demir Bentley Get in touch with Demir Bentley:Website: https://winningtheweek.com/ & https://lifehackmethod.com/ Book: Winning the Week - coming July 12, 2022! https://winningtheweek.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/lifehackbootcamp Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 314. Growing and Marketing Your Firm with Video with Dara Rosenbaum
314. Growing and Marketing Your Firm with Video with Dara Rosenbaum
Today, my guest is Dara Rosenbaum. Dara is one of the founding partners of a firm out of New York called Rosenbaum and Taylor, and they represent individuals and businesses on a variety of legal issues, including contract negotiations and business disputes and all kinds of things having to do with business owners and entrepreneurs and solopreneurs. She counsels and advises them on transactional matters as well, and represents them in litigation and lawsuits. Dara and I met on a video socials website, which is a platform run by a gentleman who was on earlier podcast ours, and she has her own video podcast that she has launched. I wanted to have her on today, and we discuss her journey through the practice of law, the legal space, and how she's become a business owner and a video marketing entrepreneur. In this episode, Neil and Dara discuss:Dara’s evolution from law school to being a business law attorney. The early days of going out with a partner from a larger firm. Preparing to move from a large firm to your own practice. Growing your marketing and branding. Key Takeaways:When going out on your own, there are resources out there to take some of the burden from you as a new owner. Utilizing a PEO service (such as NexFirm) can give you a good grounding as you are learning to go out on your own. As your firm grows and evolves, you will likely need to adjust how the firm is run and the resources you are using to run that firm. Step out of your comfort zone. You never know what you will come to love and how it will grow your business. "We realized, probably much later than many other people, that you need to have an online presence, not just a website. People have to be able to see what you're doing, learn who you are, and find you in places that aren’t necessarily getting to your website somehow." — Dara Rosenbaum Get in touch with Dara Rosenbaum:Website: https://www.rosenbaumtaylor.com/ Compelling Conversations Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/3v66xoV5zZCh9PGSpCtkd4 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4OPbiRUhS_Vc6-9Z7h42CA Twitter: https://twitter.com/RosenbaumTaylo1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Rosenbaum-Taylor-110606327214608/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dara-rosenbaum-b4148012/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rosenbaumtaylorpc/ Reference: Video Socials: https://videosocials.net/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to <a...

313. Becoming Superbold with Fred Joyal
313. Becoming Superbold with Fred Joyal
Today, my guest is Fred Joyal. Fred is a fascinating individual. His latest book Superbold: From Under Confident to Charismatic in 90 Days, teaches us a systemic way for anyone to radically increase their boldness and confidence to a remarkable level in a very short period of time. You're going to hear how he started out as a very shy person but pushed himself to become bolder. And, as a result, met some amazing people, started successful businesses, and has graduated to the point where he can speak to audiences of 5000 or more with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. He's written two books on marketing and dabbled as a stand up and improv comedian. By his own account, he acted in a few bad movies and some excellent TV commercials and visited over 44 countries around the world. I'm sure you're gonna find this interview pretty interesting, particularly for those of us who might identify as introverts or are shy individuals in the legal practice and maybe want to make some adjustments or some changes there. In this episode, Neil and Fred discuss:What it means to be Superbold (and how anybody can become Superbold regardless of their personality type). Fred’s transformation from wallflower to performer. Fred’s PRIDE method to becoming Superbold. Moving past perfection and into action with intent. Key Takeaways:Shyness is a behavior, not a genetic thing. Stop telling yourself that you are shy. Start asking open ended questions, then don’t go into a long monologue when it is your turn to talk. Be interested, not interesting. Actively listen to everyone that you are communicating with. It is a choice to be embarrassed, it is a choice to be humiliated. 99% of the time bad things only happen because you think it was bad. "It is also very important to understand something that bold people understand is that most people are not thinking about you anywhere near as much as you think. They are thinking about themselves. They go back to themselves very quickly." — Fred JoyalGet in touch with Fred Joyal:Website: https://fredjoyal.com/ Book: geni.us/Superbold Twitter: https://twitter.com/fredjoyal Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/realfredjoyal LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fredjoyal/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fredjoyal/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 312. Negotiating Your Own Professional Prenuptial Agreement with Jotham Stein
312. Negotiating Your Own Professional Prenuptial Agreement with Jotham Stein
Today, my guest is Jotham Stein. Jotham is a principal of the Law Offices of Jotham Stein, located in California, and he has more than a couple of decades of experience representing entrepreneurs and C-Suite executives in a whole bunch of different types of companies. He also represents board members and investment bankers as well as less senior employees of all different sized companies. He has written a book called Negotiate Like a CEO, and it looks at how all employees can protect themselves with the lessons that he's learned from representing top entrepreneurs and executives, and how you can profit from it as well. I think it's particularly enlightening in terms of the legal space these days, with people hiring and firing and merging and acquiring. So I think it's something that we could all benefit from. In this episode, Neil and Jotham discuss:Why Jotham wrote Negotiate Like a CEO and how it can help all lawyers. The purpose of a PIP (performance improvement plan) and how they are often used. What to look for in an offer letter or in a separation agreement. The importance of leverage in negotiation. Key Takeaways:As the entrepreneurial space has grown and evolved, so too have the legal needs of those in the entrepreneurial space. The most important thing you should look for is how to protect yourself in employment in your offer letter. That includes having a severance agreement argued on day 1 if you do have room to negotiate. There may be a red flag (depending on context) if you get push back when you try to negotiate on your offer letter. Negotiating is the same regardless of what you are negotiating, whether it is a product or yourself as a person. "It’s the concept to protect yourself, to read everything or get a good adviser to read everything, to negotiate with leverage, just like a CEO would negotiate with leverage." — Jotham Stein Get in touch with Jotham Stein:Book: https://negotiatelikeaceo.net/ Website: https://jotham.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jotham-s-stein-7b92474/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 311. Law Firm Lessons from Kobe Bryant with Henry Gereis
311. Law Firm Lessons from Kobe Bryant with Henry Gereis
Today, my guest is Henry Gereis, and Henry is a criminal defense attorney near Bakersfield, CA who has an interesting journey, having transitioned from family law, ultimately into doing criminal defense work. It's an interesting story about how he attributes a lot of the success that he's had to the fact that he's a huge fan of Kobe Bryant's and learned a lot from Kobe and how Kobe approached his life in terms of being prepared and understanding all the nuances of what he was facing. Henry has taken that approach and applied it to his practice of law. It's a terrific homage to somebody who meant a lot to him and I think you can see it in what he does for his community. In this episode, Neil and Henry discuss:Henry’s transition from being a family law attorney to being a criminal defense attorney. How Kobe Bryant affected Henry’s career path and life. Challenges of being a solo or small-firm practitioner. Helpful tools utilized in Henry’s law practice. Key Takeaways:Every person deserves to be treated with respect and decorum, regardless of where they are from and their walk of life. If you are prepared to the best of your ability, there is no need to be nervous. You do not have to be great at everything. There are many other professionals that are out there to help you run your firm. With everything, break it down into its smallest components and take it one piece at a time. "I like to think of branding as what we represent. 310. Finding Your Mindful Return with Lori Mihalich-Levin
310. Finding Your Mindful Return with Lori Mihalich-Levin
Today, my guest is Lori Mihalich-Levin. Laurie is an attorney who, as she likes to say, practices law as a side gig. She's a solo practitioner and also the founder of called Mindful Return. This is a really interesting business organization, course, book, and blog, all about the issues regarding the return to the workplace of parents after parental leave and that more transient dynamic that is associated with going on parental leave. It's a fascinating discussion, I think she's hit on something that is really important in the workplace and is certain to grow by leaps and bounds going forward. So I'm very happy to be able to share with you my conversation with Lori Mihalich-Levin! In this episode, Neil and Lori discuss:How Lori balances practicing law, running Mindful Return, and being a mom to 2 rambunctious boys. What it means to do policy work. The importance of taking care of parents returning to work (that doesn’t have to do with the baby only). Setting boundaries with work. Key Takeaways:There are more practice areas than are talked about in law school. More work than most people know goes into the policy log that is referenced in 30 sections on the evening news. Build in time for micro moments of mindfulness as new parents. Small, intentional changes throughout your day will drastically change how you show up for yourself, your clients, and your children. More and more places have gender neutral leave policies, but it is still not equal. "What I wish is that employers would focus more on conversations around logistics, making fewer assumptions around or just dictating, having open ended conversations, and recognizing that the person who left before they had a child is not the same person who was coming back afterwards." — Lori Mihalich-Levin Get in touch with Lori Mihalich-Levin:Website: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/ Book: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mindfulreturn Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 309. HyperDraft for Next Level Document Generation with Sean Greaney
309. HyperDraft for Next Level Document Generation with Sean Greaney
Starting your own practice isn’t something they teach in law school. Join me as I sit down with legal professionals to hear firsthand accounts of just how they did it. Today my guest is Sean Greaney. Sean is in-house counsel for a company called HyperDraft, also the name of the product that they produce, which is a document preparation system for use by attorneys. What sets it apart from most others is its use of artificial intelligence, and a form-based system such that you can dictate how you want the product to look and appear as an output in real-time. I am really excited about this platform. Stick around to the end, to take advantage of a free trial offer that they're extending to all of our listeners. So if you are intrigued by this product, as we've described it on the recording here, give them a call, go on to their website, schedule a demo. And if you mentioned that you heard about them on The Law Entrepreneur, they will offer you a free trial experience! In this episode, Neil and Sean discuss:Sean’s journey through every facet of law in his career and how he ended up with HyperDraft.Taking opportunities even if you aren’t looking for them. How HyperDraft can help your firm with document generation. Allowing your documentation creation system to learn with you. Key Takeaways:Be willing to go to the coffees and lunches, you never know what will come out of those meetings. HyperDraft was created by lawyers for lawyers. Being efficient is always better for law firm financials, regardless of the size of your firm. "Doc generation is a must these days, in my opinion, especially when you're in the solo or small practices, because you can benefit off efficiencies in ways that I don't think big law can go apples to apples on." — Sean GreaneyGet in touch with Sean GreaneyWebsite: https://hyperdraft.ai/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-greaney-b822a13/ Go to hyperdraft.ai to get your free demo! Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 308. A Veteran Manager Starting a Law Firm with Charles Vega
On today’s episode, I interviewed Charles Vega. Charles is an attorney in Daytona Beach, Florida. It’s a bit strange, but we have almost the exact same story. Both Charles and I were in business for multiple years and law is our 3rd or 4th career. We both went to school late in life, started a solo practice, and even right down to the fact that we are both practicing martial artists as well. I almost feel like I’m interviewing myself! You are going to hear how Charles started his solo firm and has since grown it to be the size he wants it to be as he continues to enjoy the ride and go for as long as he can. I am delighted to present to you Charles Vega. In this episode, Neil and Charles discuss:Being an older law student and beginning your law career with a robust work history. Growing a remote law firm.Utilizing past experience to hire the right team members. Enjoying both life and work. Key Takeaways:Seasoned veterans bring their own networks to law firms. Hiring the right talent is important. You are only as strong as the people who work for you. As a lawyer, it is important to know what you want your exit strategy to be and build that in from the beginning. Enjoy where you are now and embrace this time of your life. "Even though I came late in practice, I've known a lot of people and people that know I'm a professional, call me because even though they know I've not been doing it a long time, they'll know that because of my reputation, I'll take care of them and help them resolve their problem." — Charles Vega Get in touch with Charles VegaPhone: 1-800-975-0529Website: https://charlesvegapa.com/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 307. Time Management in Life Coaching and Law with Wendy Meadows
307. Time Management in Life Coaching and Law with Wendy Meadows
Today my guest is Wendy Meadows. And Wendy is, as I like to call her, a reformed family law litigator. That is to say, she practiced family law for quite some time at a medium sized law firm before going out on her own, and then decided that litigation was something that she needed to move away from. She's still doing family law, but focusing on the non-litigation aspects such as mediation, and helping develop parenting plans, and the like. At the same time, she's also a wellness and life coach, helping to move them from difficult positions that they've arrived at as a result of life circumstances and the legal practice, and helps get them unstuck and moving forward. We talk about how those two things, life coaching and wellness coaching and her family law practice, are integrated together and starting to see some synergy between the two. Join us for a really fascinating discussion, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Wendy discuss:The language you use with your client can change the resolution. Building a solo firm. Managing expectations from both the lawyer and the support staff. Time management tools for success. Key Takeaways:Nobody knows what kind of work you are looking for if you never talk about it. Be willing to take a chance on your dreams and where your heart lies. It will often tie in with your firm even if it doesn’t seem to at first. If you don’t take care of yourself, how can you take care of others? Self-care looks different for everyone (and is more than just bubble baths). With time management, look at where you are struggling and look to see where others can help take tasks off of your plate to free up more of your time. "The best work I can do in a case is really listening to my client and seeing them have their own transformation through the divorce process. So they actually come out of the divorce process, stronger, better healed, more powerful, and have a positive outlook on life." — Wendy Meadows Get in touch with Wendy MeadowsWebsite: https://wendysmeadows.com/ Email: [email protected]: https://www.instagram.com/wendy_s_meadows/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Wendy-S-Meadows-Life-Coach-100523765698021 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendy-sare-meadows-ba80285/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 306. Finding Financial Clarity with Ryan Kimler
306. Finding Financial Clarity with Ryan Kimler
Today, my guest is Ryan Kimler. Ryan owns an accounting and finance firm, called Financial Clarity LLC, and they principally support attorneys. Ryan and I got together to discuss what are the important financial analysis functions that solo and small firm practitioners need to get into place in order to grow their law firms. If you’re like most people, you might have a bookkeeper that helps you get the data into your accounting package, but in many cases, that is the extent to which your financial support extends. Ryan's company, Financial Clarity, LLC, takes it to the next step by adding accounting functions, as well as fractional CFOs. It's an interesting concept to consider. So if you're like me, this is going to be an important episode to pay attention to. In this episode, Neil and Ryan discuss:Finding someone you can trust to help with your firm’s numbers. Getting a good bookkeeper and accountant as a lawyer (and what the difference between them is). The dangers behind bank-balance accounting. Lesser-known values you can get from your financial services. Key Takeaways:Any hours you spend doing the books are hours you could have used on billable hours.Building your firm with your accountant from the beginning will allow them to scale with you rather than your books becoming a costly expense down the road. If you don’t know what your numbers are, you don’t know if you are winning or losing as a company. A CFO’s job is to do the analysis of the reports from the accountant for you. "Having a specialist can really pay off and give you peace of mind that things are getting done correctly, and they're handled properly. And they're going to keep you out of trouble with the IRS or other regulatory agencies as well." — Ryan Kimler Get in touch with Ryan Kimler:Website: https://www.financialclarityllc.com Email: [email protected] Call for Free Financial Assessment: https://go.oncehub.com/rightfit Free Financial Clarity Dashboard: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RmVWV-gXUJNJGNbAYqeHfFrAfPsZE8op/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=102338040678523759655&rtpof=true&sd=true Blog: https://financialclarityllc.blogspot.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rkimler LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryankfinancialclarityllc/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiLyqCOvxvnnlr3_6BOGqww?view_as=subscriber Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one...

305. Being More than What is Expected with Kirk Simoneau
Today, my guest is Kirk Simoneau. Kirk is an attorney up in New Hampshire, and is this fascinating story of how he went from law school to a fairly sizable firm and within a very short period of time, became the managing partner at a very young age for a venerable firm that had been around for a long time. And it's a really interesting story that then segues to the creation of his own solo practice, Red Sneaker Law. And there's some really interesting stories about how Red Sneaker Law came to be about and how he has positioned himself and branded himself in a very unique way. In this episode, Neil and Kirk discuss:Making yourself invaluable (without being asked). Creating your firm to serve the people and connect with the average person. Taking a different approach to branding your law practice. Standing out and holding firm to your brand and succeeding in your solo firm. Key Takeaways:The reality of the law and the books of the law are two entirely separate things, especially if you have a trial practice. Your story is unique to you and to your practice. Own it. Find the efficiencies in your day by figuring out your ebb and flow and making it work to the best of your ability. If you want to be successful, you don’t chase - you hunt. "The number one key to what makes my practice work is the way I schedule my day. 304. Growing from a Solo Practice with Eric Pines
Today, my guest is Eric Pines. Eric is an attorney who now operates a medium-sized law firm of about 30 employees and they're spread across multiple locations, as is often the standard these days. I wanted to have Eric on board because he could speak to the growth from a solo practice, that he started in his garage, hiring a few friends to help him run his business and has now moved on to have this medium-sized practice We talked about all the lessons learned, things he did right, things he did wrong, things he wish he had done differently, and he's got great insight into a lot of that. In this episode, Neil and Eric discuss:Starting a small firm in your home and growing to a 20+ employee firm. The evolution of marketing and lead generation. When and how to staff your law firm. Dealing, objectively, with people’s personalities and your business. Key Takeaways:Read a lot. Read about more than just being a lawyer. As an entrepreneur, you need to understand where your weaknesses lie and when it is better to hand something off to someone else. Being able to select the right people and the right technology can make a big difference in the growth of your firm (and where you are able to grow). By pairing the right employee with the right client you can make a difference in your client’s lives and best support your internal employees. "As a solo, and as a small firm, you always want to control things yourself, but the reality is, there are certain things you have to hand to other people because you don't have the time or the expertise. What makes for a good law firm attorney entrepreneur is to be able to find the correct experts who can assist you and know when to trust them." — Eric PinesGet in touch with Eric PinesWebsite: https://www.pinesfederal.com/ & https://toughinjurylawyers.com/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. 303. Building a Modern, Profitable Law Practice with Lauren Lester & Jessica Bednarz
Today I have two guests - Lauren Lester and Jessica Bednarz. Lauren is an attorney operating outside of Denver, Colorado, and has a client based law firm focusing on Family Law principally. It's really interesting how she structured her law firm to be client centered and to take full advantage of the limited scope opportunities and productize the packaging of legal services to meet her client needs. Jessica has formerly worked with the Chicago Bar Association, and then went on to work for the Chicago Bar Foundation. She now works in the incubation program leading that program for CBF and helps to turn out new law firms that get away from the billable hour model and are doing a similar thing to what Lauren was doing with her practice in Colorado. Now they've teamed up, and amongst other things, are offering some services and resources known as on purpose legal services. I think it's a fascinating mixture of the two. And I hope you enjoy hearing about it as much as I did learning. In this episode, Neil, Lauren, and Jessica discuss:Reasons you may decide to go into your own law firm. Looking outside of the law field to see what you like when designing your business or pricing structure. Client-centered communication and guides. Creating modern, profitable law firms. Key Takeaways:Build a business that you would want to be a client of. Have open dialogue with clear language when communicating with your clients regarding payment and expectations. Be open to opportunities as they come up, taking care of clients is not a risk. D "What we're trying to do is create resources for lawyers, so that they can create modern practices that are client-centric, profitable, and, at the same time, also support their well being. 301. Legal Business Development Isn’t Rocket Science with Steve Fretzin
301. Legal Business Development Isn’t Rocket Science with Steve Fretzin
Today my guest is Steve Fretzin. Steve is one of the giants in the legal marketing and business development space. I wanted to have Steve on today for a couple of different reasons, principally because he's got a new book called Legal Business Development Isn't Rocket Science. And isn't that the truth? It summarizes some of the things written in the earlier books and adds some new material. It's very broad in terms of his treatment of the things that a budding law entrepreneur would want to know in terms of legal business development. We also talk about the whole process of writing a book and why that is useful, and how one might go about doing that if you're an attorney. So if you're an attorney, with a blog post and had a whole bunch of articles already written, and you want to reuse that content, how would you go about formatting that into a book or creating a book out of it? What are some of the important concepts with respect to publishing a book? This will be a great topic to start off the new year. In this episode, Neil and Steve discuss:Being a resource to attorneys interested in growth. Getting in front of people and directing them back to your website. Putting your toe in the water and being consistent in content production. Creating your book out of your previous content. Key Takeaways:It is pointless to create content for one thing then begin with something new. You can repurpose content 3, 4, 5+ times in order to get everything out of your strategic content. You cannot do everything on all social media channels. Look at your audience and see where you want to be. Repurposing content, especially older content, involves looking at what you have and understanding what you want to put out. It is all about efficiency and time in your business. Whatever you can do right the first or second time, will save you time on the back end. "There is process, there's methodology, there's language, there are things that need to be learned, but none of it is anywhere near as complicated as building a rocket ship." — Steve FretzinGet in touch with Steve FretzinWebsite: https://fretzin.com/ Podcast: https://fretzin.com/podcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevefretzin/ Books: https://fretzin.com/about/books/ Previous Episode: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/266-master-the-art-of-business-development-with-steve-fretzin/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to callruby.com/lawentrepreneur or call 844.895.7829Get in touch with Neil:Website: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/Twitter: <a href="https://twitter.com/lawentrepreneur" rel="noopener noreferrer"...

299 & 300. Reverse Goal Setting with Stacey Brown Randall
299 & 300. Reverse Goal Setting with Stacey Brown Randall
Every year this at this time of year, December, Stacey Brown Randall devotes the month to goal setting. And what you're going to hear on this episode is me admitting that I'm an utterly terrible person at setting goals. I'm the poster boy for why goal setting is important, and I have demonstrated ample ability to foil my own progress by not setting the goals in a way that they're achievable, or sustainable, or maintaining the momentum to realize them. So I thought, hey, let's get Stacey on. We'll summarize her approach to goal setting, reverse goal setting. And we will do that for episode 300. It's a great way to kick off January, and I couldn't be happier to have my friend Stacy Brown Randall on with us again today. In this episode, Neil and Stacey discuss:Setting, and finishing, your goals. Reversing yourself into this year’s goal by thinking further out (such as using the 5-3-1 method). Being specific and SMART about setting your goals, and tools for helping you achieve them. Categories of goals and how to accomplish each type. Key Takeaways:The worst thing you can do when setting goals, is ask yourself what goals you want to set for this year (in the singular). Understanding where you want to be in 5 years, will allow you to figure out what you need to do now to get to those desires. There are three categories of goals: habit based, activity based, and project based. All are tracked differently. Don’t allow past failures to hold you back. Bless it, release it, and be willing to move forward with a clean slate. "The setting of your goals is typically the easy part. Actually finishing your goals, that's the hard part. Starting your own practice isn’t something they teach in law school. Join me as I sit down with legal professionals to hear firsthand accounts of just how they did it. Today, my guest is Laurie Gilbertson. Laurie has a very interesting career. She started off as a district attorney in the Queens County, New York office. From there she transitioned to being a fixture on Court TV along with other New York media outlets commenting on cases in the news and developing her communication skills and honing that skill set to the point where she was able to provide counseling and training to help attorneys develop those skills. Now she's started her own practice, called Tribeca Blue Consulting, that provides training and education to attorneys and other professional services on the nuances and importance of communication, particularly as a form of leadership. In this episode, Neil and Laurie discuss:The theater of communication. Honing your public speaking and other communication skills. Refining your skill sets in places other than the courtroom. Communication in building your solo firm. Key Takeaways:Preparation and self awareness is what really makes communication shine.Lawyers, overall, are often resistant to change. We need to open ourselves up to learn.Learning is a mindset change. The best lawyers are those who are open to it. When giving any presentation, you’ve got to know what's going to come out of your mouth in the first 30 seconds.Be more interested than interesting. "Communication is really all about connection. Starting your own practice isn’t something they teach in law school. Join me as I sit down with legal professionals to hear firsthand accounts of just how they did it. Today, my guest is Laura Frederick. Laura is a solo practitioner and entrepreneur. She comes out of big law and out of the commercial world, with most recently stopped at Tesla, of all great places to work. She started her practice to deal with contract law and writing contracts in a way that's a little more achievable or understandable to clients. Along those lines, she has a hugely active LinkedIn community, has written a book that's available on Amazon, and, more importantly, has started a platform called How to Contract where one can hone in on the practical applications of contract writing and development, and make that a resource available to attorneys, to law firms, to businesses, and to vendors in particular. In this episode, Neil and Laura discuss:The intersection of contract law and entrepreneurship. Understanding what you want out of your career. Listening to feedback from your social media audience to understand what they are looking for as you connect. Creating genuine content for your social media marketing and platforms. Key Takeaways:Regular jobs can be riskier than controlling your own career. It’s all in your hands when it is all yours and the eggs are no longer in one client basket. Understanding your niche and where you can expand can change how you look at your business.Showing people you are an authority will help to bring in the type of clients that you are looking for. Repurposing your social media content into a book is a great way to give yourself immediate authority, even to those who haven’t read the book. "Whenever it's all about you, you get all your paranoia and all your fears mixed in and stop that creative cycle. Join me as I sit down with legal professionals to hear firsthand accounts of just how they did it. Today, my guest is Kelsey Johnson. Kelsey is a product marketing manager for AWeber, which is an email marketing platform that quite frankly, I use and have used for years and years. Aweber is a perfect platform and they have enough robust capabilities and complexities, and technical skills that you can grow with that platform to do just about anything that a solo or small firm practitioner would ever want of their email platform. It is a delightful conversation with Kelsey, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Kelsey discuss:The value of having a platform, such as AWeber, for email marketing to small and solo law firms. The benefits of email marketing, not just utilizing social media for your marketing. Email marketing beyond the monthly newsletter. Unique opportunities to build relationships with marketing. Key Takeaways:Email marketing is like a QR code - it has been around for decades, but it isn’t going to go anywhere. There is value in owning your audience. Each person you communicate with holds enormous potential value. The communication and connection is what makes the biggest difference in your email list. There are benefits to having landing pages that aren’t just your website's homepage, in part because they can be directly built for your target audience. You can learn from your competitors and how they market and apply those lessons (without plagiarizing) in your own marketing. "That's really the best way that you do marketing, is by trying to reach everybody on the platform that they prefer." — Kelsey JohnsonResources:Try AWeber today! https://www.aweber.com/Email: [email protected] Twitter: https://twitter.com/KelseyColorado Join Lawyer Club FREE, where lawyers and law firm owners come to reclaim control of their firms and their lives!
