Going LIT with the Live Item Tag
In this episode, hosts Daniel J. Lewis and Dave Jackson explore the concept of "live item tagging" and its potential to revolutionize podcasting. Join them as they discuss the technical intricacies of incorporating live streaming into podcast episodes, the future integration of live experiences into podcast apps, and the implications of the "live item tag" for both podcasters and listeners. Your Hosts Find Dave at schoolofpodcasting.com Find Daniel at theaudacitytopodcast.com Mentioned In This Episode The Audacity to Podcast School of Podcasting Radiolize Code For Live Item Alby Why is it called the Live Item? The term "Live Item Tag" in the podcasting world, also known as "lit," represents an innovation that aims to integrate the live experience from platforms like YouTube into podcast apps. This feature allows listeners to seamlessly tap and jump to listen or watch live content while a podcast is being recorded, effectively bringing the live experience directly to the podcast app. What It Does The Live Item Tag replaces the traditional "item" tag in an RSS feed and utilizes attributes such as "pending," "live," or "ended" to notify podcast apps of the live status of an episode. Essentially, it bridges the gap between live streaming platforms and podcast apps, enabling a smoother and more integrated experience for both podcasters and listeners. Status Options When using the Live Item Tag, podcasters can update the status of their episodes as "pending," "live," or "ended," providing real-time information to listeners about the live status of a particular episode. This functionality enhances engagement and allows for a more dynamic and interactive podcast experience within the app. Do We Need To Worry About This? Considering the future progression of podcasting technology, integrating live streaming experiences into podcast apps seems to be a natural evolution. While the current implementation may have its complexities, future tools and platforms are expected to simplify the process, making it more accessible to podcasters. Coding 2.0 In Libsyn 4 You can add code in Libsyn Four. If you don't know what you're doing, we do not recommend this. Show or Episode Level The use of the Live Item Tag can be implemented at both the show and episode levels, providing flexibility for podcasters to enhance their content with live streaming. This granularity enables precise control over which episodes are presented as live, offering a tailored approach to audience engagement. What Apps Support This? Several podcast apps, including True Fans, Podverse, and Podcast Guru, are embracing the Live Item Tag feature, acknowledging its potential to transform the podcast listening experience. This reflects a growing interest and demand for integrating live streaming functionalities within podcast platforms. Alternate Enclosures Deep Dive

Thanks to alternate enclosures, creators can offer both formats to cater to different preferences. The ability to provide a seamless experience across various media types is a game-changer for podcasters aiming to reach a wider audience. The question of whether the average podcaster cares about alternate enclosures is a valid one. While not every podcaster may have the resources or desire to produce different media formats, it's essential to acknowledge the diverse needs of listeners. Deplatforming Does Not Always Equal Censorship
Deplatforming has become a buzzword that often sparks debates about censorship. The recent case of Glenn Beck, a popular conservative radio and podcast host, being removed from Apple Podcasts raised questions about the extent of free speech and the role of centralized platforms. However "deplatforming" incidents are not always rooted in censorship. In this episode, we delve into the complexities behind podcast removals, exploring the Glenn Beck Program case, communication issues with Apple Podcasts, and the need for improved strategies within the podcasting community. The Glenn Beck Program Removed from Apple Podcasts: Glenn Beck's removal from Apple Podcasts garnered significant attention due to its knee-jerk association with censorship concerns. However, it is important to differentiate between removal due to potential violations and outright censorship. While the details of the violation were not uncovered until later, it highlights the complexity surrounding podcast removals and the need to respect trademark and copyright laws. Was it a Technical Issue? Initially, it was speculated that the removal of the Glenn Beck Program was a technical glitch because there were certainly technical problems with his podcast RSS feed. These included the size (11.5 MB, which led to stability issues), redundant data, and a large cover art file size. We were surprised it actually wasn't a technical issue after all and that his show even worked before this takedown! A Trademark Violation was to Blame In the case of the Glenn Beck Program, it was the trademark rights holder who complained to Apple (after not getting the demanded action from Glenn Beck's team), prompting the removal. While this action can be seen as an appropriate response to a trademark violation, it also raises questions about whether podcast hosting providers should be the central point for addressing trademark issues rather than relying solely on the platforms, like Apple Podcasts. Apple Doesn't Always Communicate Well One recurring issue surrounding podcast removals, in general, is the lack of effective communication from Apple Podcasts. The lack of specific details regarding technical issues or policy violations has led to confusion and panic within the podcasting community. Improved communication channels and transparency would be beneficial in addressing concerns and avoiding the spread of fear, accusations, and misunderstandings. Deplatforming: Centralized versus Decentralized The Beck incident highlights the debate between centralized and decentralized podcasting platforms. While centralized platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify offer the benefit of potential notifications for issues, they also hold the power to remove content without clear guidelines or explanations. This raises concerns about potential censorship when the content is the least bit controversial (no matter which political direction it leans). On the other hand, decentralized catalogs like Podcast Index offer more freedom and less likelihood of corporate- or government-driven censorship. Podcast-Hosting Providers Need to Handle Problems Better To mitigate the risks of sudden removals, podcast-hosting providers should play a more proactive role in addressing issues. They should be monitoring feeds for potential problems or even disallowing problematic stuff to be uploaded in the first place, such as large images or invalid HTML or RSS. Any of these, and more technical errors, can lead to removals or performance problems on major podcast apps and directories. Additionally, hosting providers should take the lead in resolving trademark or copyright concerns and ensure ample communication with podcasters to avoid unnecessary panic. Make Yourself Easy to Contact! Podcasters need to be easily reachable when issues arise. Including contact information within podcast feeds and ensuring...

A successful podcaster (who we suspect is John Lee Dumas of EoFire fame) is looking to sell his show for 15.5 Million. In-Depth on Captivate's New Podcasting 2.0 Features
Media Host Captivate released a list of new features that are part of the Podcasting 2.0 specifications. We hear phrases like "medium," and "value" but what are they? What can I do with them? Who are they for? New Features From Captivate The new features they introduced are: podcast:episode – this tag represents your podcast’s episode number. podcast:season – used for seasonal podcasts to show which episodes are part of which season. podcast:guid – a unique identifier globally recognized number (36 characters) for each podcast RSS feed by the Podcast Index. podcast:locked – you can set this to yes or no. The purpose is to tell other platforms whether they can import this feed. podcast:funding – podcast can tag lists for donation and funding e.g. you can point to Patreon, Buy Me A Coffee, or even PayPal. Integrates with your Captivate donation link. podcast:license – this tag allows podcasters to point to a URL where license terms of a podcast live. podcast:medium – tells the application what the content contained within the feed IS, as opposed to what the content is ABOUT in the case of a category. podcast:txt – this element holds free-form text and is modeled after the DNS “TXT” record. It’s meant to allow for usages that might be niche or otherwise not rise to the level of needing a dedicated tag. podcast:value – used to enable Value4Value crypto payments. podcast:location – use this tag to describe the location of what the podcast is about. It’s NOT the podcaster’s physical address or location. If it’s a podcast about sightseeing in London recorded by someone in LA, the tag would set this as London. New Top of the Leader Board Dave Jones of Podcasting 2.0 is now on top of our value board. Thanks Dave! Mentioned In This Episode Captivate (Dave's Link, Daniels Link). Thinking Outside the Box A Deep Dive into the Fountain Podcast App
I watched a video featuring the creators of Toy Story reflecting on the movie ten years later. They had a set of rules to not do any of the cliche things you saw in animation. This meant: No songs No "I want." No happy village No love story No Villain And Disney brought in someone who said all of the above were missing and they should add the missing elements. By ignoring the notes from Disney, they not only created a great movie, but created a franchise. The film placed first in the weekend's box office with $29.1 million[3] and maintained the number-one position at the domestic box office for the next two weekends. Toy Story went on to become the highest-grossing domestic film of 1995. In this instance, I feel like Disney. In my last episode, I stated I look for the following in a podcast app: The ability to program settings per show - nope The ability to set streaming amounts per show - nope Speed control per show Playlists - Kind of but not really In a nutshell, Fountain.fm doesn't do many of the things I'm looking for. Does this mean it's a bad app? No. It means it's a bad app for me. Who Is This App For? The Fountain app is for the listener who fully embraces the streaming satoshi part of the Podcasting 2.0 feature set. Here are the satoshi-related products from their front page You can earn satoshis for listening. You can stream, boost, and like satoshis to your favorite shows You can see Baller Boosts in the Hot on Fountain Chart OTHER FEATURES Hot On Fountain can be found under search (Charts). Many of these are bitcoin-related New lIghting Podcasts (many of these were in Spanish and other languages) The ability to fill your wallet from within the app* Discover section showing clips, boosts and more. Make clips - much improved - just drag and drop. Chapters Carplay Sleep Timer How to Use Tags To Organize Your Episodes/Shows in Fountain.fm Click on podcasts at the bottom. Click on Shows Click on the show and click on the tag icon. Click on the "+" and enter a tag. Then click on the tag. Now every new episode will have this tag Now when you click on Podcasts at the bottom and click on the episodes or shows tab and you will see the tag. The bad news is fountain stops playing after the first episode in your tagged list is over. This is awful for people in the shower or out riding their bike. Filling Your Wallet I am excited that you can fill your wallet from within the app using a service called Moonpay. That is the good news. The hurdle you will need to overcome is your bank may flag this as suspicious. The first time I attempted to put $30 in my wallet, my bank stopped it and sent me a text asking me if I wanted to do that. I said I did, waited about a minute and tried again, and it worked. My New Podcast App Wishlist
In this episode, I share my opinion on what I look for in a New Podcast App. There are a ton of new features being designed, and I share what and why I look forward to using these features. I started using Apple Podcasts App back in 2005 until it broke (and stayed broken for about a week). Then I switched to Overcast, and if Marco (the developer) added streaming sats to the app, I wouldn't be talking about testing other apps. In the past, I've tried fountain and Podverse, but that was a while ago. Both had their pros and cons. I'm currently using Castamatic. Why? Because it acts and feels just like Overcast. My Wish List Playlists that automatically update when an episode from a specific show download. So I can have a playlist where I add show A, Show B, and Show C, and as soon as any of those shows publish an episode, it's in a specific playlist (Health, Money, Podcasting, Friends). I will also need to sort these by date. Playback Settings Playback speed Silence trimming Satoshi streaming (setting a level per minute for each show. Some are more valuable than others) Starting and ending points (cause some shows to take forever to get to the good stuff and/or take too long to say goodbye. Keep X amount of episodes. Delete after listening. Respect anything labeled as serial Sorting oldest to newest While we Are At It If I could get a search function that works. A functional web-based version that is synchronized so I can pick up right where I left off when I pick up my phone. The ability to upload a file and have it downloaded into the app. I would love it if it worked with Alexa from Amazon. Be sure to charge me, so you stay in business. Full list at website. MAKE IT EASY TO PROMOTE I want to point people to MY show on YOUR app. The easier it is to do this, the more likely I am to do it. Is 2023 The Year of Adoption?
I struggle sometimes to explain Podcasting 2.0 (where they are enhancing the RSS Spec), and then I remembered HD Radio. When I had a new car, the radio in the car picked up additional advertising-free stations that were good. One dear vs. car crash later, and my car doesn't have HD radio. Many of you may not even know about HD radio. For a while, radio stations were promoting it trying to get people to listen, but aside from cars, I'm not sure how many people are buying new radios today (I had to order one off of Amazon to listen to Football games that weren't shown on TV). HD Radio Video Demo In the same way that HD is cool (from what I remember, a better "Deep cut" selection of music, actual DJs talking about the music, and zero ads), many of the new features being added to Podcasting are amazing. One feature called the Live Item Tag will alert you when your favorite podcasts go live to record. Currently, only Podverse has this feature enabled, but others will add it soon. Currently, the "Mainstream / Legacy" Apps like Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon do not support any new features. Amazon has mentioned adding transcripts, but instead of using the ALREADY CREATED tag for transcripts, they are going to make their own. If you want to see apps that use some of these new features, go to New Podcast Apps WE WANT A DIFFERENT TYPE OF HISTORY While HD Radio has been around since 2002. I know many stations announced it, but nobody was talking about it. There was almost zero word of mouth where I live. None of my friends rushed out and bought HD radios. There is no "radio community" to pester Sony and other companies to "Make an HD radio receiver for my house." Are you listening to the radio in your house? If I'm listening, it is to a podcast. So this show is to keep you informed and to alert you that one day you will hear the call to "Rally the troops" and make an organized and concerted effort to approach apps, and media hosts to adopt these new features. NEW NAME ON THE WAY I put this show together in somewhat of a hurry. I skipped one of my own rules. If you need to explain your show's name, you picked a bad name. Consequently, I want to talk about the new features coming into Podcasting 2.0 along with other non-crypto, super technical subjects around the future of podcasting. So, for now, I'm leaning toward calling the show "The Future of Podcasting." This will also give me room to step outside the Podcasting 2.0 space. I'm not sure what the schedule will be (or if it will be on an "I record when I find something" schedule). So don't freak out when you see the artwork change or the name change. I love this space and want to be more involved (without having to build a server for the helipad software). Stay tuned...
