Ep 230: Invisible Hands - trusting instinct and flow when logic says no
'Invisible Hands' was a term American writer and professor Joseph Campbell used to describe the sense of flow in the right direction when creating purely, when following our bliss.I've become fascinated by it, and explore the idea in this episode. Logic is often king in our frightened brains, but when we commit to what instinct and the wellspring of our being suggest is right for us, and create accordingly, it's amazing how doors open, and people who can help us emerge in our lives.Sponsored as ever by https://illustrationx.com who have a superb new quarterly illustration trends report here: https://www.illustrationx.com/uk/news/5992/trendx_-_april_2024and the Ukrainian Institute https://ui.org.uahttps://mkgeeknight.co.uk/Hosted by Ben Tallon https://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com/shop for The Creative Condition bookhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/https://baycroftpublishing.wixsite.com/baycrofthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s28rwnz18j4

AI TERMS EMERGENCY
Seemingly overnight, Meta, Adobe, and Squarespace, among others, have issued robust terms to users that would see creative industry professionals surrender their work to train Artificial Intelligence models. This is a ramble from a confused illustrator who would rather not hit the big red button on Instagram, and would rather not have to quit Photoshop for the last time. But what does it mean to accept such an invasion of privacy, and how do we all feel? It's a worrying precedent and a corporate play that suggests the tightening of the net in late-stage capitalism. Here are some thoughts that might move the discussion forward between designers, artists, illustrators, photographers and many more visual communicators.Sponsored as ever by https://illustrationx.com who have a superb new quarterly illustration trends report here: https://www.illustrationx.com/uk/news/5992/trendx_-_april_2024and the Ukrainian Institute https://ui.org.uahttps://hbr.org/2023/04/generative-ai-has-an-intellectual-property-problemhttps://www.creativeboom.com/resources/everyones-talking-about-cara-but-is-it-any-good/The AI Artist Audit: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/ep-194-the-artist-ai-audit-art-automation-is-here/id1038442077?i=1000618735470Hosted by Ben Tallon https://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com/shop for The Creative Condition bookhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/

Ep 228: The problem with perfectionism in a creative environment with University of Chicago professor & author of 'Flawed' Greg Chasson
Perfectionism can be extremely damaging to creativity. We live in the age of data, in which the bottom line creates a culture of fear. Here uncertainty is the enemy, and algorithmic creativity is causing a dramatic level rise in the sea of same. In the creative industry, this could be a death sentence, so I spoke to Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, and author of 'Flawed' Greg Chasson at length about the neuroscience and effects of perfectionism. As a man with a career built on imperfection, it was a joy to hear it so expertly articulated by Greg.Sponsored as ever by https://illustrationx.com who have a superb new quarterly illustration trends report here: https://www.illustrationx.com/uk/news/5992/trendx_-_april_2024and the Ukrainian Institute https://ui.org.uaFlawed book: https://www.flawedbook.com/https://psychiatry.uchicago.edu/faculty/gregory-chasson-phdhttps://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com/shop for The Creative Condition bookhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/

Ep 227: DRAMA! A conversation with drama teacher Abby Lucas about the untapped mental health & education fuel
Abby Lucas teaches drama and English at secondary/high school level in the midst of a growing mental health crisis. She sees the the positive impact it has on young people, their wellbeing, their communication skills, their learning, and their ability to take control of their lives. But she is only able to teach it within the curriculum for one hour each week.We discuss the tragic educational and wellbeing omission that is drama, the benefits of expanding its presence in the curriculum, and our frustrations in depth.Sponsored as ever by https://illustrationx.com who have a superb new quarterly illustration trends report here: https://www.illustrationx.com/uk/news/5992/trendx_-_april_2024and the Ukrainian Institute https://ui.org.uahttps://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com/shop for The Creative Condition bookhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/

Ep 226: Shoplifting Ian Wright. What my Woolworth's ban taught me about creativity
It took me a long time to acknowledge the shame of being caught shoplifting. At age 13, I stole an Ian Wright football figurine and got caught, earning me a UK-wide ban from Woolworth's department store. It took years to own this one, but when I did, I saw so many lessons in the importance of the shadow self, what such missteps can teach us about our personality, and its value in our creativity.Sponsored as ever by https://illustrationx.com who have a superb new quarterly illustration trends report here: https://www.illustrationx.com/uk/news/5992/trendx_-_april_2024and the Ukrainian Institute https://ui.org.uahttps://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com/shop for The Creative Condition bookhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/

They join me in conversation about the dangers of (conscious or unconscious) gatekeeping, which underpins 'More Than One Seat', their new project created to encourage collaboration, and not the kind of gatekeeping Steph became aware of while working in the advertising industry. This a great example of the joys of being a champion for another, in encouraging growth, and collaborative play, which leads to great ideas and optimal creativity. You can find out more about 'More Than One Seat' here: https://www.morethanoneseat.com/and follow Abi: https://www.studioeverett.com/aboutand Steph: https://stuffstudio.net/On socials: https://www.instagram.com/evergooood/https://www.instagram.com/stuffcreativestudioSponsored as ever by https://illustrationx.com who have a superb new quarterly illustration trends report here: https://www.illustrationx.com/uk/news/5992/trendx_-_april_2024and the Ukrainian Institute https://ui.org.uahttps://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com/shop for The Creative Condition bookhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/

I had to explain to my kids why manageable jeopardy is good for them on this morning's nursery run. This tested my understanding and articulation of it. Ep 206: Murugiah, interdimensional artist *not* talking h0rseshit about ever-evolving creativity
In 2018 I met Murugiah for episode 102 of The Creative Condition Podcast. He had results, and he was freelancing successfully as an illustrator and artist, but there was a fragility about him. The earliest seeds of his current, flourishing art style were starting to flower, but they were mere dots in the soil.In 2020, on 'Cabin Cast 5', bright green buds had emerged, and spots of colour were trying to push out.Now as we stare down both barrels of 2024, he returns and things are in full bloom. And yet, he says he's been talking utter h0rseshit this entire time. Ep 204: GUTS. The vital role of gut health in creativity with microbiologist Zuzanna Karwowska
We hear it all the time, 'You are what you eat!' - but how seriously do we take our diet when it comes to our mental health? For the longest time, for me, the answer was 'not very.'We identify a raft of other aggressors when it comes to our moods, but we are living organisms and we require constant good nutrition to operate at our best.As part of the November mental health special episodes, following on from Kimberley Wilson on ep 202, I'm joined by microbiologist Zuzanna Karwowska. Zuzanna works with machine learning to study the gut microbiome. She lays out just how critical gut health is to our mood, our brain health, and therefore, our creativity, and gives us a snapshot of the life of a microbiologist! As ever, the show is supported by the founding sponsor, illustration and animation agency, and b-corp Illustration X. https://illustrationx.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/zuzanna-karwowska-768967a5/To back 'The Creative Condition' book Kickstarter, head here. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/creativecondition/the-creative-condition-bookhttps://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com

Ep 202: Nutrition, whole body mental health & creativity with psychologist Kimberley Wilson
We all know - on some level at least - the importance of good nutrition for good health. But how many of us equate it to effective creativity? It took me the longest time to start eating, every day, to fuel a firing brain, and positive mood, to give myself the best chance of hitting my optimal performance zone. It's been a revelation, and that was in part to do with Kimberley Wilson. Kimberley is a psychologist specialising in nutrition, who educates about 'whole body mental health.'Kimberley's life-altering book, 'Unprocessed: How the Food We Eat is Fuelling the Mental Health Crisis' paints an equal part frightening, and revelatory picture of how severe the lack of nutritional education is, and what it means for all of us.We discuss many of the topics, and what we can do to improve our health for better creativity.https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/unprocessed-how-the-food-we-eat-is-fuelling-our-mental-health-crisis-kimberley-wilson/7073333?ean=9780753559741https://www.kimberleywilson.co/aboutThe show is supported by founding sponsor and B-Corp, Illustration X: https://illustrationx.comhttps://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/

Ep 200 part 2: Why I'm fighting for creativity & The Creative Condition book Kickstarter!
After 2 years of writing, 10 years of study and research, a lifetime of observation and lived experience, and 200 podcast episodes, 'The Creative Condition' book is ready, and I need your help!Creativity has been an infinite joy in my life. It has become my calling. It brings together communities, energises societies, empowers individuals, and has enabled the continued survival of our species. And yet it continues to be lumped in the same basket as artistry and marginalised at every level of education. Here is what creativity means to me, what I'd like to change, why I've chosen to write another book on the subject, and why I'm asking for your support as the book Kickstarter launches.https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/creativecondition/Supported by the brilliant Illustration X, founding sponsor of The Creative Condition podcast. Ep 200: The sensitivity special with Jenn Granneman
Have you ever been told, or thought you need to toughen up? Or that you're a weakling for feeling more hurt than others at the hands of events in your surroundings? Or wondered if you're strange for feeling more joy than other people seem to when times are good? It's likely you're a highly sensitive person. For the 200th episode of The Creative Condition Podcast, I'm joined by sensitivity and introvert expert Jenn Granneman, co-author (with Andre Sólo) of 'Sensitive: the Power of a Thoughtful Mind in an Overwhelming World to discuss sensitivity in depth. We live at a time when conversations around the mind and well-being are at an all-time high, and people like Jenn are playing a huge role in providing us with more tools to map out our own creativity. Hopefully, this one will add great value!Supported by the brilliant Illustration X, founding sponsor of The Creative Condition podcast. Ep 199: Stefan Sagmeister on why now is better, long-term thinking & optimism
Somewhere in those big hardback books of collected design that we had around the studios in which I studied, or perhaps it was in the 'Handwritten' book of collected hand lettering, I found the work of Stefan Sagmeister - the infamous talk poster for which he'd carved the information into his own torso. His reputation as a great designer is more than earned. Since 1993, working out of New York, he has created work for The Rolling Stones, HBO, Lou Reed, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum through Sagmeister Inc.His new book, 'Now is Better', out on October 4th with Phaidon is a tonic to the doom and gloom spirit of 24-hour news cycles and social media. It's a thing of visual beauty, but also promotes long-term thinking and perspective, so we can be better, happier, and more creative people to address the problems we face.We discuss these themes and more. The book will remain on my coffee table for the days when I get the blues!Photograph by James Braund.Supported by the brilliant Illustration X, founding sponsor of The Creative Condition podcast. Ep 195: METAL & DVST founder, Kelly Korzun on art, Marc Chagall, Chicago, the shadow & the universe
Kelly Korzun made the decision not to make money from her art. The purity of it meant too much to her, and we get into that, along with the twinned journey with Marc Chagall she grew aware of.How did her artist interview and feature project, 'METAL & DVST' originate, and why is it essential to embrace your 'shadow' self for mental wellbeing. We get onto the unlikely, but interesting topic of pornography. As ever supported by founding sponsor and b-corp Illustration X - https://illustrationx.comhttps://www.metalndvst.com/https://www.instagram.com/metalndvst/?hl=en-gbhttps://bentallon.comhttps://bentallonwriter.com

Ep 194: The Artist AI Audit: Art automation is here. What does it mean for your practice and career?
Automation is here. At first subconsciously, then consciously, I found myself factoring AI into my decision-making - the work I chose to create, the direction I chose to push forward in, and the broader value of each of my skills. As an artist, illustrator, letterer, podcaster, writer, and speaker, each of my disciplines came under the lens of this new technology.Like all tech before it, much good and bad will come of it. So where do we, as independent artists, illustrators, designers, and writers fit into the conversation? I chose to conduct an audit of my practice and share it with you in the hope it might encourage similar audits and introspections. We are already late, and if we are to thrive moving forward, we have to understand the role of AI in our industry, what it might enhance, and of course, what it might eradicate. The show is supported by Illustration X, a certified B Corp representing the world's best illustrators, animators and artists. https://illustrationx.comhttps://bentallon.comhttps://theaoi.comhttps://bentallonwriter.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-tallon-a822a725/
