188: Lean Mass vs Fat Mass
Lean Mass is the sum weight of your skeletal muscle, organs, skin, bones and body water. Fat Mass is the amount of fat in your body. As we age (which, sadly, starts in our 30’s) we begin to lose muscle mass. The less muscle we have, the worse our metabolism works. Muscle is one of our greatest metabolic assets because it serves as a storage tank for carbs. The less muscle we have to store glucose, the more quickly it turns to fat. Thus, we start conceding more lean mass over to fat mass which is a major metabolic nightmare!I recently had a body composition scan to assess my lean mass versus fat mass (scale weight doesn’t give you any insight into this important ratio). In this week’s episode, Gin Stephens and I talk about her book Clean(ish) which is an informative guide about cleaning up your food and home environment without becoming overly dogmatic or fixated on an unattainable level of perfection. The more we can minimize the toxins that we put in and on our body, the less it has to struggle to stay healthy and maintain optimal weight. Most people don’t realize how modern toxins (things our ancestors didn’t have to deal with) interfere with our hormones and promote fat accumulation. 😱It can be overwhelming to try and remove the overload of toxins we’re exposed to on a daily basis, but each little change you make can add up to a big difference: a hand soap here, a cleaning product there, a new, upgraded lip gloss when you run out of your old. 180: Fat & Carb Energy Toxicity
If you want to be metabolically fit, it’s important to understand the way your body burns carbohydrates and fats as energy. It generally focuses on one fuel source at a time and, because carbs turn to sugar, it’s the metabolic priority. You can’t have too much sugar circulating so the body has to deal with it first. The problem is, if you’re keeping your body too busy burning sugar, it doesn’t have the opportunity to burn fat. This leads to fat accumulation and, over time, a less efficient metabolism. In this week’s episode, we’re talking about how to avoid energy toxicity so that your body can burn both carbs and fats effectively. We use strategies like the carb/fat seesaw, fasting and exercise in order to stay metabolically fit. 173: The Electron Diet
Each day our body attempts to maintain a negative charge by gaining electrons and excreting excess protons. We do this through secretions like sweat, urine, poop and tears - which are all positively charged. Turns out, a huge foundation of health hinges on our body having a “net negative charge” - being more negative than positive - which happens when we have more electrons than protons. We typically associate negative with bad, but in the case of our body - negative is good! Too many protons and not enough electrons is an equation for inflammation. People often ask me what is or isn’t allowed during a fast. Does lemon water break my fast? Does creamer in my coffee break my fast? Does stevia break my fast? Do supplements break my fast? I’m much more feasty in the summertime. I eat more carbs; I don’t fast as long; I drink more wine. Tis the season of longer days, looser schedules, less regiment, lots of social activity and lots of Heck Yeahs. I definitely ate, drank and was merry! The purpose of the journal is not to give you a shining blueprint of how to eat, but to be real and transparent about how I eat. 168: From Chaos to Order
Poor health comes from disorder in the body. When there is disorder, there is disease. It is being out of alignment with the way God made us. Everything we need for good health is revealed to us in Genesis in the Creation story when God established order from chaos. He took unformed, barren space and spoke structure and harmony into existence. We witness God’s orderly approach in each step of Creation, knitting together the universe with purpose and intention. That includes the way He made us! The way He deliberately ordered the foundation of the universe mirrors the foundational needs of our bodies. I’ve noticed it from several angles and realized that the stress of some of it has pushed me to the brink of crashing. In this week’s podcast we’re talking about having awareness around times you feel “icky” about yourself and how that can affect your health spiritually, mentally and physically. I gained five pounds and teetered on the edge of emotional breakdown until I made a decision to step back and give myself some space.
