We explored the importance of education in black and brown communities by dramatically reducing barriers to entry and participation. And we also explored the importance of the lessons of freedom from Juneteenth as context for the broader conversation of economic empowerment.  In this time around, we decided to capture our real time reflections on the bipartisan compromise to a crypto tax provision in the Senate’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill after a vote on Monday, August 9th.  U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) announced the compromise involving Democrats, Republicans and the Treasury Department earlier in the day, saying it would exempt crypto transaction validators from a broadened definition of “broker.”  One Senator stood in the way and blocked unanimous consent over an unrelated topic. We cover the NFT beef between Dame Dash and Roc-a-fella Records (RAF). On June 18th, RAF filed a complaint in federal district court in New York against Dash  to prevent him from auctioning an NFT of the copyright in Jay-Z’s iconic album, Reasonable Doubt via a little-known minting and farming platform, SuperFarm. This case involves NFTs and copyrights but it’s mostly a corporate law case. On July 1, Inner City Press live tweeted the Show Cause hearing where Dash's lawyer asked that the preliminary injunction be limited to the album, not a hologram of his corp. interest. In 2018, they launched a four-city accelerator program in Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia, and London. Specifically, we talk about Nigeria as a case study for how distrust in a political and financial system can lead to a shift where citizens opt-out to adopt other self-custody value transfer options. For example, esusus (informal lending groups) are a popular means to create and protect wealth based on familial relationships or affinity groups, create a community of trust and honor that is “off the books”  In the case of esusus, they are not digitized. They are IRL cultural norms. But if they were digitized … perhaps they’d look A LOT like blockchain communities.
