Philip Muscatello - Australian Investor Education
We're all investors in the share market, either directly or through our superannuation. We're handing over management of our assets to financial advisors and fund managers. The best will look after our interests and make us wealthier. But how can we know for sure? Where do you go if you're completely new but want to start learning about investing in the markets yourself. The jargon is dense and it can feel like we're being kept deliberately in the dark. In Shares for Beginners, you'll hear from people in the finance industry and together we'll explain key concepts of investing in the ASX, the NASDAQ, S&P500, FTSE and Dow. More importantly, they have insights that allow us to look under the hood of the stock market, explaining how it works and what to look out for. We have to be smart. We have to be diversified and we have to have good risk management strategies if we want to invest for the long term. For more Information go to: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/How is your superannuation linked to the Australian & US stock markets? It's crucial to understand the fundamentals of stocks and shares, and recommend reading "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham.I explore the basics - what a share is and how to buy one, and delve into the world of value investing, exploring strategies to identify undervalued stocks. I cover key terms like ASX (Australian Securities Exchange), CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange), ASX200 (Australian Securities Exchange 200 Index), ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), LICs (Listed Investment Companies), Managed Funds, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), as well as the difference between passive and active investing. There are many traps for beginner investors and it's good to be aware of the role and risks of options, warrants, CFDs (Contracts for Difference), day trading, bonds, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the difference between fundamental and technical analysis.Tracking your investments is essential, and it's important to know about watchlists, understand dividends and dividend reinvestment plans (DRPs), while exploring robo-investing, fixed income, index funds, and micro-investing.I cover topics like trading and buying shares, making money from shares, and understanding the Australian stock exchange. What is the role of stockbrokers and online brokers and how to buy and sell shares.I've interviewed industry experts and collaborated with Superhero, Stockspot, Caleb Silver Investopedia, Spencer Jakab from The Wall Street Journal, Pearler, Sharesight, Magellan, Saxo, Morningstar, QAV, Equity Mates, Owen Rask, Strawman, Motley Fool, Stockopedia, Betashares, Vanguard, Van Eck, Roger Montgomery, Tony Kynaston, Gemma Dale, Betsy Westcott, Molly Benjamin, Liz Tian, Andrew Baxter, Simon Ree, Wisr, Ladies Finance Club, Strong Money Australia, Captain Fi, Fred Schebesta, Kylie Purcell, Australian Shareholders' Association, Jessica Amir, Jordan Eliseo, Shani Jayamanne, Vic Jokovic, Scott Phillips, Mark Monfort, Andrew Page, and Claude Walker.Shares for Beginners is a production of Finpods Pty Ltd. Kenny Polcari - The Global Financial Crisis
“Post the Global Financial Crisis it was exhausting because every day was just another down day. It was another pressurized day. A lot of people lost a lot of money. Some people couldn't take it anymore. Suicide rates in this country and this industry went up, it was tough. I mean, it was very, very difficult to come to work every day and try to focus on what was positive because every day it was just negative news. There was nothing positive for a good four years or so. There was just nothing positive about what was happening in the financial markets.”Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Remembering 9/11 with Kenny Polcari
"The fear was that the New York Stock Exchange was next, because when you think about America and you think about developed nations and developed markets, the New York Stock Exchange is a symbol. If nothing else, it's a symbol of America. It's a symbol of freedom. It's a symbol of capitalism. It's a symbol of the free world. Because if somebody really wanted to make a statement, I mean, they made a statement, but had they flown a plane into the Exchange, they would have brought this country and really the global financial markets to a standstill."THIS EPISODE CONTAINS GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS OF THE EVENTS OF 9/11 THAT SOME LISTENERS MAY FIND DISTRESSINGShares for Beginners is for information and educational purposes only. Emma Kirk – Magellan Group
The Australian share market is only 2.4% of the world. You’re missing out on lots of companies if you only invest here. Emma Kirk is Key Account Manager – Listed Funds at Magellan Financial Group.“We're only about 2.4% of global markets. And I think that's the thing. We very much have a home bias. We love our Aussie stocks. We love our franking credits and there's nothing wrong with that, and it's a great way grow your wealth over time. But what you're missing out on is exposure to particular sectors that Australia just doesn't have. These are the likes of technology and consumer staples. The Australian market's dominated by resources and banks. And so you're missing out on different types of businesses that are growing exponentially.” - Emma KirkPortfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Lelde Smits is a Director of The Australian Shareholders’ Association, co-founder of The Capital Network, and has been ranked as one Australia's Top 100 Entrepreneurs. She has reported breaking news from thousands of listed companies and interviewed hundreds of executives and investors around the world. Here's the link to watch: https://youtu.be/qDt_lhDZYIk More information in the blog post here https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/lelde "Almost 45 million US households will transfer a total of 68 trillion US dollars in wealth in the next 25 years. And millennials are really going to be the primary beneficiary of these transfer. So by 2050, they're expected to replace the baby boomers as the generation with the greatest wealth and online share trading platform. NABtrade says in Australia, millennials will inherit around three and a half trillion dollars from baby boomers over the next 20 years. And then of course, when we look at millennials coming into investment, it's also important to understand, well, what is important to millennials and Morgan Stanley says that 86% of millennials are interested in sustainable investing and twice as likely as the overall population to invest in companies targeting ESG goals." – Lelde Smits Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Kyle Macintyre - Does Oil Have a Future?
As more people resume travel following the pandemic, demand for oil is expected to rise. The world will need more oil from the same companies currently being told to limit spending, as many investors shun the fossil-fuel industry. Today my guest is talking about the price of oil and what it all means. Kyle Macintyre from Firetrail Investments believes in spite of the move to green energy and electric vehicles, and the pressures of ESG investing, that the price of oil is heading upwards.More information in the blog post here https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/oil "Where things start to get really interesting, that I mentioned before, is that history shows that, you know, the prices of commodities are set by the supply and oils are a really unique commodity in that it's actually driven by pressure and you actually get declines in supply when you don't have continued investment in oil." – Kyle MacintyreKyle is an Investment Director at Firetrail Investments. His primary responsibility is providing investment and portfolio insights to professional investors. Kyle is also member of the Firetrail Investment and Management Committees. Scott Hudson - how do you know you own your shares?
When you made your first purchase of a share or ETF you would have received a welcome letter from a share registry. What's this for?More information in the blog post here https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/computershare "What is a share registry? I think probably the easiest way to, to answer that is to use some other analogies. When you've got your license and you go to Vic roads or the RTA and they record who the license holders are, or you go to the land titles office and they register who the owners of properties are, a share registry records the ownership of companies. So who are the shareholders? What are their names? What are their addresses of the companies? And we primarily focus on ASX listed companies here in Australia" - Scott HudsonA share registry like Computershare recordsYour mailing addressYour email addressYour Tax File NumberYour bank account details As General Manager of Market Liaison, Scott is responsible for Computershare’s engagement with the market and leading strategic projects. I can feel the phones ringing. I can feel the tension in the, in the place. It was really, it was unbelievable. It was unbelievable. Kenny Polcari - A Brief History of the NYSE Pt I 1980 - 1987
So, I’m searching around for my next guest and I come across this guy, Kenny Polcari. I’m looking at this guy and I’m thinking – he’s been on the New York Stock Exchange for like 40 years. He might know a thing or two. I normally try and keep interviews to 30 minutes but after 30 minutes we hadn’t even reached 1987. I love war stories and Kenny’s been there on the frontline on a bayonet charge through the markets. We’ve decided to record 4 episodes to chronicle this extraordinary story. Next episode will be about the Black Monday Crash of 1987 through to the tech boom, Y2K bug and the year 2000. After that episode we'll take a little break and then come back with 2 more. By the way the movie our failing memories was trying to recall was Wall Street with Kirk Douglas and Charlie Sheen. “Greed is Good”. Here’s some clips: https://youtu.be/-TLCaDbBv_s"I was completely enamoured by what I experienced at the New York Stock Exchange. You have to remember in 1980 there were no computers, nothing, zero. There wasn't even a calculator. There was no television, no radio. There certainly wasn't any internet Yahoo and LinkedIn and Twitter, none of that stuff existed. And when you were on the floor, you were really in a cocoon. You couldn't get information about what was happening in the outside world, because there were no outside sources. I walked into a building that had 5,000 Type A personalities running around screaming and yelling, buying, selling, bidding, offering all of these stocks. I was completely mesmerized from the minute I walked through that door." - Kenny Polcari· https://www.kacecapitaladvisors.com/ (Company Website)· https://www.kennypolcari.com/ (Personal Website)Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Certainly as a stock trader you have to research and understand what you're putting your money in even if it's not a huge amount you want to understand what it is and from that you form an opinion as to why you think it's a good investment. And we encourage the same sort of thing in this space so a big part of what we're looking to do is help people understand what all the different coins are. Mark Mitchell - Generating Income in Your Portfolio
Mark Mitchell is a Director of Daintree Capital, a boutique investment management company specialising in building fixed income credit portfolios. I know that I go on about this, but it's really important to understand that there are different kinds of asset classes that you can invest in. Shares are not the only way. Mark explains everything about bonds. They are loans to governments or corporations. Depending on your circumstances they could be considered as part of your portfolio.More information in the blog post here: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/mitchell "When you think about investing in a bond, there are a number of risk factors that you look at, but the one most people focus most heavily on, you know, is the default risk, the risk that you're not going to get your money back."Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Tony Kynaston - Know Yourself
Tony's been on the podcast several times and I always enjoy our chats. We started this discussion with one of my rants about how before doing anything, beginners need to understand who they are. Learning how to become an expert stock picker is not something that happens overnight. It takes years of learning, expensive experience when you will be making costly mistakes, managing risk, and dealing the emotions that are inevitably attached to money. Many beginners think that it's just a matter of being given the right "tips". It simply doesn't work that way. As Tony says: "We're trying to teach people how to fish, not give them a fish dinner every night."Episode Blog Post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/tkTONY KYNASTON is a multi-millionaire professional investor. Thanks to the checklist system he developed, the average return on his portfolio over the last 20 years has been 19.5% pa. Tony's knowledge and calm analysis takes the guesswork (and trauma) out of share market investing. Quick Tip - Buying Your First Share
A Quick Tip from Doug Morris from Sharesight about making your first share purchase and using it as part of your learning experience. Only invest a small amount and then read everything you can about the company. The companies he mentions are all US stocks but the same lessons go for companies on the ASX."Look for a company you're familiar with, that you use on a daily basis. Is there a statement from a trained analyst saying the value of this company is x and the shares ought to be trading at y? That might be a company you should consider investing in."Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time. Ted Richards - Six Park Online Financial Advice
Ted was a guest on one of my first episodes. I wanted to chat again. In these days of DIY investing it's easy to forget that financial advice is now within the reach of smaller investors. It may not be the cheapest option but it could fast-track your investing knowledge. We discussed this in the context of recent market mania about meme stocks and "stonks".Episode Blog Post: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/ted"Stonks are popular companies that are mostly traded by retail investors, not institutional investors. They're often companies that you and I may use a lot. They get these huge share price increases, and often without any fundamental business catalyst behind why the share price is spiked so sometimes they're referred to meme stocks, even story stocks. And there's a lot of money, that has been flooding into these and to be honest, I think a lot of the biggest reason for it is a bit of FOMO, you know, their brands or people understand share prices going up. So people fight into it and the likes of Elon Musk and Dave Portnoy have been tweeting specifically about the word stonks and that's even fueled this even more and kind of made this investing approach and I use the word investing approach loosely."Portfolio tracker Sharesight tracks your trades, shows your true performance, and saves you time and money at tax time.
