Freelancer To Law Firm Owner: Challenging The Traditional Legal Mentality
Imagine having no salary, no clients, no savings to fall back on and jumping completely into the unknown. But what if the only way to change your life is to do the things that some aren't willing to do?Running a business in the legal world isn't easy and growing one is even harder. The traditional legal models can feel restrictive, stuck and outdated in parts.Today I'm talking with Hannah Strawbridge founder of Han Law and we have a really frank conversation about what it takes to thrive in the changing legal world. Hannah started out as a freelancer and then built a successful employment law business. Han Law was created to be a disruptor to the legal industry. Can You Truly Prioritize Health in a Culture Obsessed with Hustle?
We’re often Type A, perfectionists, driven to succeed. But at what cost? The legal world rewards the grind.Long hours, back-to-back meetings, endless emails. We push ourselves because we think that’s what it takes. But here's the thing – are we burning out without even realizing it?When you’re always running at 100%, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. I used to think I could power through it. But now, I see the cracks. The constant stress, the lack of balance… it catches up with you. Here’s what I’ve learned: prioritizing health isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. If we keep ignoring it, we’ll pay the price. What if we stopped glorifying the hustle? What if we made room for well-being?Because in the end, a burned-out lawyer isn’t a successful one.Today I'm talking with Grace Williams, ex solicitor turned Health & Nutrition coach working with ambitious women to create more energy, balance and success in both their health & work, focusing on nutrition and lifestyle tools to manage stress and improve their gut health. In this episode, find out as a lawyer to prioritise health in a culture that thrives on grinding. This conversation has transformed the way I think about commercial awareness. I always thought it was a barrier to getting training contracts and solicitor jobs. But in actual fact, understanding what is going on in the news and applying it to law and your firm/ prospective firm is one of the most underrated and successful ways you can stand out and be seen in your firm even as a junior or in an application process. This episode is vital for you if you want to build a successful career in law. Noone is talking about how you can leverage commercial awareness in your career. We talk about how the commercial awareness requirement in applications can be a barrier for many people. And, how many lawyers can use it to their advantage.Today I'm chatting with Idin Sabahipour, founder of LittleLaw.What is LittleLaw?LittleLaw is a platform designed to make business news more accessible for aspiring lawyers. Brainwashed By The Billable Hour: The Impact On Self-Worth
Digital nomad life isn't about sipping margaritas on a beach in Bali whilst answering your emails. It's about mindset, discipline and focus. You have to almost forget the mindset you adopted when you were a lawyer working in an office. This includes the billable hour. In this episode, I chat with Brian Dixon about the impact that billable hour has on self-worth. Do you calculate the cost of personal activities based on how long it will take you to bill? When you become fixated on trading your time for money, you can begin to devalue yourself and your work. Is the billable hour outdated? As a digital nomad, working based on the billable hour can almost conflict with your lifestyle. You have to start thinking in a value-based way. Why Imposter Syndrome Is Rife In Law: Class, Culture & Childhood
We see lawyers as these highly confident, unstoppable machines. But in reality, many of them are struggling to keep their head above water. That's what Harley Street performance and anxiety specialist Olivia tells me. Most partners and senior lawyers say they have had imposter syndrome at some point, especially women. In this episode, we get to the science and psychology behind imposter syndrome, why lawyers get it and how to combat it. What's interesting is that imposter syndrome can actually lead to people working longer hours to try and improve themselves, not being comfortable to ask questions, being afraid to stand up for themselves, and staying in toxic work cultures because they don't feel they're good enough to work anywhere else. I'm sure that this will resonate with many lawyers. Olivia James specializes in helping legal professionals overcome performance anxiety. We talk about the science behind why we can get hot and flustered and lose the ability to talk and think whilst in important meetings, pitches or presentations and how our stress levels can be linked to our ability to speak in a courtroom or in a meeting.Get in touch with Olivia James here. In this episode, I'm talking with Emma Roche. She is a practicing Legal 500 lawyer with a side business as a philosophical life coach. She is proof that you can continue in your legal role (if you love it) whilst also living your purpose and doing what you're passionate about, if it isn't law.Emma is a Certified Integrative Coach having completed an evidence based Accredited Certificate in Integrative Coaching with the School of Positive Transformation. She is also trained as a philosophically informed life coach. Visit Emma's website here: https://www.emma-roche.com/Emma is also of counsel (Commercial Real Estate) at BDB Pitmans."Aristotle talks about eudaimonia and flourishing, and what we have to do to flourish. "Flourishing" being a kind of happiness where you are just constantly growing."Background:Emma has had a lifelong passion for philosophy that began in school. Driven by her enthusiasm, she successfully campaigned to have philosophy added to the A-level syllabus. This early dedication led her to pursue a degree in philosophy at university. Now, she's come full circle, using philosophy as a practical tool for seeking clarity and understanding in her own life and in helping others.-------------------------------------------------------Podcast LaunchIgnite your podcast journey with a resounding launch that resonates and captivates your audience. My comprehensive podcast launch package not only crafts your initial five episodes, but sets the stage for building authority and influence right from the start. For more information go to my website here.Connect with me on LinkedIn Podcasting from scratch free courseMy free 5-day email course: Podcasting from scratch.
