It’s based on the true story of systemic serial murder that happened some time after the Osage tribe found oil on some land they were shoved on to. Nothing draws in white men better than their money. We’re feeling a little melancholy, not unlike Christopher Lee’s Dracula, because this will be the last Hammer Film Dracula movie we will discuss for HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST. Christopher Lee appears in three more Hammer Films as Dracula but Peter Sasdy’s 1970 film “TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA” will be our last for the season and perhaps that’s for the best because some of Dracula’s choices seem a little unlike what we’ve come to appreciate from our gothic fuckboy. It’s been a weird week in this final full week of HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST. It’s been some pretty crazed haunts and Michael J. Commercial director Nobukiko Obayashi was tapped by Toho Films to make whatever their own version of JAWS should be. After a little industry hot potato and some wild ass ideas from the mind of a little girl, the 1977 film “HOUSE’ was born. A cult classic by western standards but a hit in Japan in its day. Seven girls go to their Aunt’s house who is actually an enraged spirit who is so angry about World War II that her, and the house, will eat these girls and consume their essence with one remaining to carry on for the tortured spirit in physical form. HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST stays humpin’ and this mid-week sub theme is “ghosts, spirits, and haunts” and we go for a bit lighter spooky fare with Peter Jackson’s 1996 comedy-horror “The Frighteners” starring Michael J. We’re returning for our penultimate Hammer Films Dracula feature this month and we aren’t with Terence Fisher this week, instead we check out an early director work by the acclaimed cinematogrpaher, Freddie Francis. Last we saw Dracula, his sad-ass fell into some ice. How does he get out of that pickle? Well, a sadder-ass priest slips on some rocks right outside of the castle and bleeds into cracks in the ice which happens to be right over Dracula’s mouth. We’re continuing our weekly vintage reviews of some Hammer Horror of the vampiric kind and we miss out on Christopher Lee’s Dracula this week because, well, he died at the the of “Horror of Dracula” but his cult lives on as Peter Cushing’s Van Helsing comes across a strange case of a weird little Baron and his mother who keeps him chained up until a little French hottie sets him free. The Baron Meister is a vampire, of course, and he’s got a couple of hungry baddies our there under his thrall. Terence Fisher directs another in “The Brides of Dracula” from 1960 and Christopher Lee wouldn’t return to his role for another six years. The Baron is a bit of a twerp. I don’t think Dracula would respect his game. Dracula would have never gotten caught in the shadow of a windmill cross. The character of Greta is amazing, though. Today’s discussion is a resonating sleeper hit from 2014 directed by David Robert Mitchell in which a young girl finds herself constantly pursued by something after sleeping with a boy. We’re in our last week for our month’s theme of ASSHOLES ON FILM and we had to hit up a flick with our Asshole Theme Mascot, John Wayne. Why not hit up one of the most beloved John Ford/John Wayne westerns ever. Yep, we’re talking about the 1956 classic “The Searchers” starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles and a young Natalie Wood. The character of Ethan Edwards is quite the racist so you know John Wayne didn’t have to “act” too hard. His racism doesn’t ebb when a particular Comanche tribe kills his family and abducts his nieces. He doesn’t even like the guy who is helping him look for his family throughout the movie because he’s 1/8th Cherokee. He’s a cunt and he will probably kill his niece when he finds her because she’s probably too integrated within the tribe. Also this is Charlie McCorrey’s movie and we’re all just along for the ride. We’re finishing up our viewing of Sergio Leone’s Man With No Name/Dollars Trilogy for our month’s theme of ASSHOLES ON FILM and we’ve already established that Clint Eastwood’s character of The Man With No Name is a little over the middle of the asshole scale. Bounty hunting and senseless egg yolk breaking make him a contender but probably the least assholey of all the assholes featured in our selections. But this movie is more than just a “Clint Eastwood” movie. This movie is pretty much stolen by Eli Wallach’s depiction of Tuco Pacifico and Tuco is the asshole we’re concentrating on for the 1966 Sergio Leone classic “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. Fantastic characters and Incredible moments that are a little bit cluttered amongst the backdrop of the U.S. Civil War which has, perhaps, moved vaguely more west than we might have originally known. This month is ASSHOLES ON FILM for our theme and we’re keeping it vintage this midweek as we explore a Samurai classic that was actually considered a big flop and all production of a follow up ceased after it’s release. Perhaps the Japanese film goers at the time didn’t appreciate Kihachi Okamoto’s interpretation of a popular serialized story but the tale of the stone cold killer, Ryonusuke, stood the test of time as one of the Samurai genre’s most compelling features. We’re talking the 1966 classic “THE SWORD OF DOOM” starring Tatsuya Nakadai, Michiyo Aratama & Toshiro Mifune. Truly the character of Joker really makes actors go for it. We’re talking the 2005 film “Oliver Twist” and it’s not directed by Kenneth Branagh like we so confidently, and blindly, assumed. No, this perfectly fine and well executed film was directed by Roman “Meet me in Jack’s hot tub” Polanski. Yep, the infamous and influential director that can’t come back tot he United States unless he gets arrested for statutory rape. His victim forgave him a long time ago, but there is no “did he or did he not” hear. It’s pretty well acknowledged. You could say that Roman Polanski “artfully dodged” his ass to Europe to get away from these charges. That said, how does Polanski’s “Oliver Twist” stand out from the other many interpretations of the story? Ben Kingsley is pretty good, at least. Also starring our boy Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains and Olivia de Havilland. A very mirthful and iconic take of the Robin Hood mythos done in bold Technicolor. It can’t be overstated how much of a pop culture phenomenon Tim Burton’s 1989 “Batman” movie was. People were losing their bat-obsessed mind. The skepticism of the Michael Keaton casting quickly fell off. Jack Nicholson entrenched himself as a cinema icon. Airbrush T-shirt shops were popping up in strip malls hocking any article of clothing with the Batman logo on it. We couldn’t get enough. Unless you were my grandmother who, very quickly, had enough. For this month’s theme of ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY we’re spending our Mondays looking at the film roots of today’s ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY and the character of Zorro is a fine place to start. Dual identities, protector of everyday citizens, son of wealth. Hey, Zorro sounds like he might be kind of influential to that one guy in Gotham City with the ears. The sword on sword action goes pleasantly hard in Rouban Mamoulian’s 1940 adventure film “The Mark of Zorro” starring the super hunk Tyrone Power and the sneering swag of Basil Rathbone. Seriously, this movie might have the best sword fight we’ve ever seen. Week one of our theme, ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY, ends with an obvious follow up to last Wednesday’s episode with “Superman II” but not just any Superman II. After Richard Donner got fired during production of Superman II, they brought in Richard Lester to reshoot some stuff and finish it off leading to the classic theatrical release of the movie. Twenty six years later, Richard Donner was backed up by a horde of demanding nerds on the internet and given the green light to recut Superman II into a movie that was as close to Richard Donner’s original vision as they could get. We’re doing this version to maintain the “Donner-ness” but some Lester shots and scenes were still used. There’s less “Superman and Lois in France” and more “Lois jumps out of a window and pulls out guns.”. A little less “flag waving” and a little more quick “shots of a crowd that is not from 1980”. We’re watching some of the earliest Superman movies for week one of our ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY theme and we felt comfort but got all melancholy watching Richard Donner’s 1978 smash hit adaptation of the comic book icon, “Superman” starring the late Christopher Reeve and the late Margot Kidder. Hell, Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando are dead too. I guess Brando would definitely be gone by now. Mortality, man. Shit is heavy. If only we could fly off and turn back time. August’s theme is “ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY” which means we’re FINALLY getting to a Superhero movie theme, but we ain’t gonna be watching some “Age of Ultron” shit yet because we’re getting to the godfathers of where we’re at today as well as adventure film influences from even earlier times. It’s Superman week and we’re revisiting the classics and starting with the first ever Superman feature film outside of a serialized format. The iconic George Reeves dons the cape in the 1951 feature “Superman and the Mole Men” which led directly into the popular 50s TV show. Clark Kent and Lois Lane go to write up a story about the world’s deepest oil rig and it becomes a real story when little Mole Men pop out of a hatch and go peeping in windows and pissing off the townsfolk. Can Superman save these little dudes from a frothing mob? Nah. He fails actually. Then Superman gets murdered.
