Being a mom and building a business is no easy task. It's very difficult to give all your attention to your business and then turn around and give 100% to your little ones who call you mom. They both seem to need all your attention all the time.How does one balance work and family life? I see people asking this question all the time. In today's episode, Ashley Lopez of The Luxury Lash Studio, shares her story how she got into the lash industry and how she kept pressing forward while have 4 kids in a relatively short period of time. Over the years, she has had to deal with a lot of difficult challenges... infertility issues, postpartum depression, miscarriages, starting a lash line that ended up not wanting to do...and so much more. In today's episode, we are excited to have Sam Waters, Lashie Award winner, talk about her lash journey. She shares about the challenges she has faced being in a province in Canada where they are regulated as well as the difficulties in finding supplies and tools in her province. We also talk about her attempts to mentor lash artists in her community and how some push back when she offers to help. On top of this Sam talks about 911 and how the town of Gander, Newfoundland is the only 2nd city in the world with a 9/11 memorial. When 9/11 happened, 37 planes landed in this small town and the city doubled in size in 24 hours. There is a Broadway musical called "Come From Away" that tells this amazing story of a small town rising up to the challenge of caring for strangers they have never met. Sam shares how this event changed her and how she lives her life. A few years ago we saw Shannon Sin on Instagram making a lot of noise for a lash brand in a good way. Her Reels and videos were just so much fun to watch. We see on Instagram all the time trainers and lash companies tell lash artists to never settle for anything less than the best trainings and products. Sounds like good advice...but it falls a little short. Most of them assume my products and training are the best, so buy them...but often they don't explain why theirs is the best. The 3rd Annual Lashie Awards are here, and this is the year you are going to apply! Over the last two years, we've had a few hundred lash artists apply, and out of that group, 47 lash artists have brought home a Lashie Award Trophy. We started this award program because we saw so many competitions that awarded lash artists for great lash work, but no one recognized great lash business operators. Since LASHCON is all about teaching lash artists about business, we decided to start an awards program that also celebrated the best and the brightest business minds in the lash industry. On June 25th Deb Bazzle, owner of Lash Story Studios, lost her whole business in just a few hours to a fire. What would you do if this happened to you? This last week was interesting. We made a post saying that we feel it's okay to lash clients who have a stye. We had some very loving and kind lash artists contact us and inform us that they thought this was bad advice. At first, we doubled down and said that we didn't see what was wrong with lashing someone with a stye. It's been a while since we've given this issue some thought, and when we went back to our medical sources (and did some reading on the subject), we discovered we were wrong. For most of us, it's very easy to talk about our great plans, but if you are like me, it's difficult to make those plans a reality. We met Nikki Murphy of NK Beauty Bar & Academy at LashFest in London this spring and were blown away by her presentation. Her talk was on being more inclusive in our trainings which is a very important topic, but then she took us for a turn we did not see coming during her talk. She shared how we need to be more inclusive in the way we teach so people who are neurodivergent can feel welcomed to our lash trainings. We had never even thought about how someone who is dyslexic or autistic might struggle in huge ways with our standard trainings. It was such an honor to meet Nikki, hear her story, and see how she's using her past struggles to help neurodivergent lash artists have better access to lash trainings. We attended Shelby Tarleton's Lash Boss Summit back in April and had a fantastic time connecting with lash artists from all over the country. Welcome to episode #300! Our first episode aired on January 29, 2018, while we spoke at the ISSE show. We thought we'd launch it that weekend so we could promote it in our classes and hopefully get a big launch. I think we got 30 plays that first week, and I'm sure 20 of them were just me listening to myself. The show did not take off as we hoped, but over time it has found its audience. A couple of weeks ago, we posted a video on Instagram where Tussanee shared how she liked to use artificial tears to keep her client's eyes happy. That didn't go over well with some lash artists and they reached out to us concerned about our best practice. We love it when lash artists disagree with us as it helps us to really think about what we do and make sure what we do is right. Having someone disagree with us is not upsetting...if anything we see it helping us to solidify our ideas or adjust them where we are wrong. In today's episode, both of these things happened. While we still recommend that you take care of your clients with saline and artificial tears, we did learn some new things about insurance that was very interesting. We love it when you reach out and ask us questions and today we answer 2 questions that were asked of us. First, we discuss how to deal with client lash expectations. Often a client will ask for one thing and then later say it's not what they want. lol. Tussanee shares how she deals with clients who can sometimes be difficult to please.
