Ep 156 - Tania Malkin on Capturing Australia's Beauty Through Aerial Landscape Photography
Tania Malkin's passion for photography began early, collecting travel postcards on family camping trips around Western Australia and receiving her first SLR camera at seven. Inspired by the Australian outback's colors and the Australian Impressionist art movement, Tania's interest in photography and art has been a significant part of her life journey. Initially studying fine art and art history, she used photographic images as references for her paintings. However, landscape photography, particularly aerial photography, took precedence in the late '90s. Living and working in remote locations has given Tania the opportunity to explore and capture stunning landscapes, creating artworks across various mediums, including photography, painting, and ceramics. Tania describes aerial images as illustrations of the landscape in a completely different way, offering a journey through the history of a landscape that oscillates between the surreal and reality.. Tania's work is renowned for its unique perspectives and storytelling through images, capturing the essence of the landscapes she explores. She continues to shape her approach to landscape photography, offering a glimpse into the future of the art form. Ep 153 - Exploration and Imagination in Aerial Photography Featuring Tim Wrate
Ep 153 - Exploration and Imagination in Aerial Photography Featuring Tim Wrate
Tim Wrate's childhood passion for drawing fantastical landscapes evolved into a love for photography during a 2001 expedition to Mount Kenya. However, it wasn't until 2008, after completing his academic pursuits, that he fully embraced photography. Inspired by medium format panoramic photographers, he adopted a medium format slide film camera in 2010, dedicating himself to mastering its nuances and the discipline required for film photography. In 2018, on a family holiday in Western Australia, a chartered flight over Hutt Lagoon revealed stunning textures and colors, igniting his fascination with the aerial perspective. This new pursuit led him to travel across Australia, capturing diverse landscapes, from cloud inversions in Kosciuszko National Park to dramatic tidal ranges in the Kimberley. Aerial photography, though challenging, offered unique rewards. From the open windows of light aircraft and doorless helicopters, Tim navigated wind buffeting, engine vibrations, and shifting perspectives to capture powerful images. Collaborating closely with skilled pilots, he revealed the hidden beauties of the landscapes. Tim's work transcends the obvious, offering fresh insights and a harmonious blend of geography and art. In this episode, Tim outlines his journey from childhood fascinations to his adult explorations of Australia's diverse terrains from the air.  Highlighting his transition from film to digital photography and the strategic adoption of medium format cameras for panoramic vistas, he emphasizes the importance of finding a unique photographic voice.  Additionally, we discuss the challenges and rewards of sharing art in the digital age, offering advice to aspiring aerial photographers and stressing the unending allure of discovery through the camera lens. Ep 135 - Nature Photographers Network with David Kingham & Cody Shultz
In this episode, my guests are David Kingham, the owner of the Nature Photographers Network and Exploring Exposure and Cody Schultz, editor of Nature Vision magazine. We cover what the community and magazine are about, how you can contribute to both and how you could benefit from the constructive criticism which is a feature of the community.  Both reveal how experiencing nature has enriched their lives and has allowed them to express their individual creativity. Cody shares how photography has helped him address mental health issues, while David touches on his transition from astro to landscape photography and the challenges he encountered.  We talk about their approach to photography, which involves capturing their personal experiences in nature more than striving for an 'epic shot'. A key theme resonates through the conversation: the value of personal expression and enjoyment of nature, making art that matters to you, and the vitality of honesty in one's work.
