Spencer Merk is a Cincinnati-based* trombonist that plays until he is blue in the face. Literally. He is also a composer, arranger, and educator. Last year (2022) was a big year for Spencer. Not only did he win the International Trombone Association’s J.J. Johnson Competition for Jazz trombonists under the age of 25, but he also released his debut album, Last Place in a Bear Race, in November of 2022 — a body of work that I believe is the beginning of an impressive catalog. *Spencer has since relocated to Baltimore to pursue his master's degree. On a Limb is one of the many bands that have pushed the Cincinnati jazz scene forward. They graced this city with their unique trio for years, but started a new adventure in Brooklyn in 2021. Of course, it was sad to see them go, but it’s amazing to see bands from our city follow their dreams and reach new heights. Ernie Johnson From Detroit is a vibrant big band based in Cincinnati. They refuse to stay in one lane with their expansive music that blends funk, afrobeat, rock, and jazz. Their genre-bending sound is not the only thing that sets them apart though. Their matching jumpsuits have been known to turn heads as well. They definitely have my vote for the best dressed band in Cincinnati.
