Ep #073 Blackfish with Books And Rhymes, Post Colonial Child, and Book Shy Books from Not Another Book Podcast
It’s Episode 73 and it’s a special edition! For this episode we have THREE guests! Not Another Book Podcast join us to review the 2013 documentary Blackfish, the choice of Post Colonial Child. If you haven’t seen this heartbreaking and shocking documentary - stop reading and head straight to Netflix. A modern day tragedy for human and mammals, Blackfish is the true story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale responsible for the death of three people. It’s focus is the tragic death of Dawn Branchau, an experienced and dedicated SeaWorld trainer and the incidents of abuse to the whale that killed her leading up to the violent incident. Barely making a ripple at the box office the legacy of Blackfish is still being felt, John Lassiter and Andrew Stanton changed the story of Finding Nemo after watching this and SeaWorld faced an 84% drop in profits in 2015.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='75'] Its impossible not to be moved or shocked by this well directed and captive documentary and it’s power is reflected in the scores from Flixwatcher and guests. Blackfish scores overall a strong 4.19, especially for a documentary- recommended. What do you guys think? Have you seen Blackfish? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #072 Annihilation with John and Harry from the Beyond the Box Set podcast
It’s Episode 72! Beyond the Boxset’s Harry and John return for Harry’s choice the 2018 science fiction fantasy from genius Alex Garland, Annihilation. Annihilation was not intended to be a straight to Netflix release and this is evident is the vast cinema landscape the film inhabitants but it’s is cinemas loss and Netflix’s gain. Rare for a science fiction film the main ensemble is all female, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Tuva Novotn (Oscar Issac and Benedict Wong are minor characters) are on a part rescue, part exploration and part suicide mission into a mysterious shimmer with freaky bears and crazy DNA. Ex Machina part 2 this is not and it largely divided critics and audiences equally on its release - this is not your conventional film.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='74'] Annihilation scores particularly high on recommendability but lower on the small screen score (not surprising) and overall a very respectable 4.04. What do you guys think? Have you seen Annihilation? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #071 Gattaca with Ben From Top Film Tip and George from Retro Ramble Podcast
Welcome to Episode 71! Our guests are George (Retro Ramble Podcast) and Ben (@topfilmtip on Twitter) and we’re reviewing George’s choice the 1997 high concept sci fi Gattaca. Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law star in this criminally overlooked film set in a futuristic society driven by eugenics where Hawke fights to claim his space at Gattaca Aerospace Corporation and travel in space despite his genetic disadvantages. Despite the terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE film posters Gattaca is just shy of brilliant. One reason why the film doesn’t feel dated is its focus on script and feel, from the building design to lack of technology to the crisp suits it means the acting tells the story. All the leads are great, even if Uma is a big underused and there are a few delights in the supporting roles.
Scores [supsystic-tables id=73]Gattaca was a big hit and welcome rewatch from Flixwatcher and guests and scores very highly on recommendability but loses points on the small screen score. Scoring a very strong 3.91 overall Gattaca is highly recommended. What do you guys think? Have you seen Gattaca? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #070 Tucker and Dave vs Evil with John Dorney and Tom Salinsky from Best Pick Podcast
This is Episode 70! Tom and John from Best Pick Podcast return for John’s choice Tucker and Dave vs Evil. Tucker and Dale vs Evil is the cabin in the woods, hillbilly in reverse 2010 comedy horror, the always watchable Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are the hillbillies who inadvertently become mixed up with a murderous teen and a series of unfortunately grisly (but hilarious) methods of death.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='72'] With a run time of 89 minutes this comedy horror nips along on its rather thin premise. There isn’t much to dislike here, while it’s not quite as clever as it thinks it is it does deliver on gags and grossness. Tucker and Dale scores reasonably well in small screen and engagement (that’ll be the 89 minutes!) and overall comes in at 3.54, if this is your thing enjoy! What do you guys think? Have you seen Tucker and Dale vs Evil? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #069 Ibiza, with Elizabeth Sankey from Summer Camp band and Eleanor McDowall from Radio Atlas
Everyone yells and falls down a lot, it’s Episode 69 🍌! Elizabeth (Summercamp & film fan) and Eleanor (Award Winning Short Cuts and Radio Atlas) McDowall join us for Elizabeth’s choice Ibiza. Ibiza is a 2018 film from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay in producer will a plot that is as thin and flimsy as bikinis you’d expect to find in Ibiza. Gillian Jacobs is Harper on a PR trip to Barcelona with her two friends tagging along who meets “empty vessel” DJ and romance doesn’t really happen but there is sex. Ibiza is a rom com lacking in the com and the rom, despite Elizabeth’s staunch defending there is very little to say about Ibiza.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='71'] Unsurprisingly Ibiza does not score highly, it manages 2.09 overall. I’m fact the film is so bad the island of Ibiza is potentially bringing a lawsuit against Netflix for depicting the island in such an awful way. What do you guys think? Have you seen Ibiza? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #068 Network, with Liam from Spocklight and Eleanor Parker from Bygones
You’ve reached Episode 68! Returning guests Liam (Spocklight) and Eleanor (Bygones) are back for Liam’s choice, Network. Network is the 1976 Sidney Lumet film starring Faye Dunaway, William Holder and Peter Finch, winning four Oscars and influencing much of modern film and tv (Aaron Sorkin and Black Mirror for example). Network is a black comedy and satire, although set in television it can be applied largely to all media. Watching with 2018 it is probably as absurd as it was to 1976 viewers, in that what was outrageous and far fetched then and the reality now. It practically invented reality tv. In Network the news becomes a programmed reality show to boost ratings, sound familiar??!!
Scores [supsystic-tables id=70] Network was generally well received by Flixwatcher and guests, points it dropped on repeat viewing it picks up on small screen score, overall it scores 3.95, just below the highly recommended but still worth a watch if you’re curious.

Ep #067 The Young Offenders with Tiernan Douieb and Jason Reed from the Partly Political Broadcast and Stop and Search Podcast
It’s Episode 67! Tiernan (Partly Political Broadcast) and Jason (Stop and Search) join Kobi and Helen for Tiernan’s choice the 2017 Irish comedy The Young Offenders. Jock and Connor are two best buddies on a mission to find a bale of washed up cocaine on the West Cork coast, on stolen bikes. Their paths cross with an over zealous police officer and genuinely terrifying psychopaths whilst also being a journey of friendship and sort of maturity. It’s easy to compare this with the likes of Twin Town, but The Young Offenders has lots of heart and resists the urge to go full on gross out and it makes it all the more relatable and enjoyable.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='69'] The Young Offenders scores an amazing 4.85 on engagement and overall a very strong 4.25. Highly recommended! What do you guys think? Have you seen The Young Offenders? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #066 Love and Friendship, with Sara Mae and Ruby from The Sugar Baby Confessionals
Welcome to Episode 66! Sugar Baby Confessionals Ruby and Sarah Mae return for Ruby’s choice Love and Friendship. A 2016 film based on a lesser non Jane Austen short, Lady Susan, starring Kate Beckinsale and directed by Whit (Last Days of Disco) Stillman. In true Austen style it follows Lady Susan’s quest to secure a wealthy husband for her daughter and herself with wonderful period costume and witty ripostes. If that’s your thing then this will be for you - if it’s not it’s an hour and a half of someone trying to find a husband might not do it for you - your choice!
Scores [supsystic-tables id='68'] Austen and period costume fans Ruby and Sarah Mae were more generous in their scoring than Flixwatcher and this reflected in the overall scores. Love and Friendship scores 3.82 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Love and Friendship? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #065 Casting JonBenét with Hannah and Suruthi from true crime podcast "RedHanded"
We’ve arrived at episode 65! From true crime podcast "RedHanded" podcast Hannah and Suruthi join us for Hannah’s choice, the Kitty Green documentary/audition reel "Casting JonBenét". Fun fact - the murder of JonBenét was responsible for the creation of RedHanded - yet to be covered in their podcast but you can hear their verdict on this episode! It’s important to note this is not a documentary and it doesn’t shed any new light or offer and closure to one of the most famous and fascinating unsolved crimes. So what is it? It is a short of extended audition reel and imagined reenactment of what happened on the night of 26 December 1996. The end result is a collection of weirdos aiming for their five minutes of fame and beautiful cinematography - with creepy potentially pedophile Santa. If you’re looking for answers there is a two-part CBS documentary that can satisfy that if you’re looking for a insight into small town Americana and dark humour this is your biscuit. Scores [supsystic-tables id='67'] Casting JonBenét is obviously going to lose points on repeat viewing - but scores generally well on recommendability and scores overall 3.57 - strong for a documentary film! What do you guys think? Have you seen Casting JonBenét? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #064 Gods Own Country with John and Harry from the Beyond the Box Set podcast
It’s Episode 64! John and Harry from the Beyond the Box Set podcast join us to review John’s choice Gods Own Country. This 2017 film set in Yorkshire (get it?!) is a modern love story between a young disillusioned, laddish young farm Johnny and Gheorghe, a Romanian migrant hired to help out on the farm during lambing season. Cruelly overshadowed by the success and acclaim of Call Me By Your Name despite the critical acclaim Gods Own Country didn’t have the same reach or audience - this is criminal. Starring the beautiful rolling hills of Yorkshire and wonderful performances from its two stars Josh O’Connor and Alec Secarean Gods Own Country is an earthy, slow burning film about passion, family, things unspoken and intimacy. It’s also a fascinating portrait of modern rural life in England.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='66']Unsurprisingly Gods Own Country scores highly across the categories (near perfect in recommendability 5,5,5 and Kobi’s 4.5!). Only let down by repeat viewing and that we wish we’d had the chance to see it on the big screen. Overall a very strong 4.15. Highly recommended. What do you guys think? Ep #063 District 9 with Annabel Bligh and Gemma Ware from The Anthill Podcast
Welcome to Episode 63! We welcome Gemma and Annabel from the Anthill Podcast back to Flixwatcher to review Gemma’s choice the 2009 Neill Blomkamp film District 9. Billed as a Peter Jackson presents District 9 was the breakout film for Sharlto Copley. Filmed and set in Johannesburg it mixes (fake) found footage and documentary styles and is was inspired by the true life events of District Six from the apartheid era. The film, despite providing some genuine comic moments, addresses themes of racism, xenophobia, bureaucracy and refugees and immigrants while moving between sci fi, body horror and action genres. District 9 has aged pretty well and it’s themes are still relevant today and it’s all held together by Copley’s performance and interaction with the ‘prawns’.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='65']Our guests and Flixwatcher scored District 9 highly across most categories bringing the overall score to 4.1 (despite Kobi’s low score for repeat viewing!). Highly recommended What do you guys think? Have you seen District 9? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #062 Midnight Run with John Dorney and Tom Salinsky from Best Pick Pod
It’s Episode 62! John and Tom from Best Pick Pod join us to review the 1988 action comedy Midnight Run starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin.
Midnight Run is essentially Planes, Trains and Automobiles played Beverly Hills Cop style, meaning swearing, guns and exploding helicopters! Not surprising as it’s from Martin (Beverly Hills Cop) Brest and made in 1988.
De Niro and Grodin made a perfect odd couple on the run from the FBI and the mob making their road trip via ever decreasing levels of comfort in transportation. Considering it’s age, seen through 2018 eyes it still holds up pretty well, it’s as cheesy as it was in the day but De Niro is genuinely enjoyable and it’s a lot of fun.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='64'] Midnight Run scores fairly high across all categories and overall comes in at 4.33. Warmly recommend by Flixwatcher and guests. What do you guys think? Have you seen Midnight Run? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #061 All About Eve with David K Barnes and Beth Eyre from Wooden Overcoats!
Beth and David from Wooden Overcoats (your premiere comedy drama podcast about rival funeral directors), join Kobi and Helen to review the 1950 Betty Davis classic All About Eve.
Scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, All About Eve is a bona fide Hollywood classic. Nominated for 14 Oscars it won six. It is the only film in Oscar history to receive four best actress nominations though winning non and features an early Marilyn Monroe performance. The story is the classic starlet stealing The limelight from the ageing, but admired star, despite its years it still remains dazzling, hilarious and a masterclass in acting from the whole cast.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='63'] There was a lot of love - if slightly lukewarm from Kobi - for All About Eve and it scores 4.46 overall (not enough to knock WWDITS off the leaderboard) an extremely high Flixwatcher score indeed. Ep #060 In Bruges with Hannah Dunleavy and Jen Offord from Standard Issue
OMG! Episode 60! Hannah and Jen from Standard Issue (a podcast by women for women BOOM!) return for Hannah’s choice In Bruges. Where to start with In Bruges? It’s a 2008 film from Martin McDonagh starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hitmen attempting to lay low in Bruges. What follows includes a batshit awesome performance from Ralph Finnes, a coke fueled racist rant from a dwarf actor and enclaves. It’s a comedy in case you were wondering. In the arc of Colin Farrell this is brilliant and hilarious, the chemistry between him and Gleeson is genuine and completely convincing. New comer to In Bruges Jen found it “well bleak” and not the “bantz-a-fucking-rama” she was led to believe - and rightly so. Definitely not up there for her like Bugsy Malone or Kindergarten Cop. It is bleak, spoilers there is a LOT of death but it is also really, really funny. Definitely an acquired taste is required and if you’re into it then you’ll be rewarded, if you’re not, maybe give it another try?
Scores [supsystic-tables id='62']Generally, this film comes recommended with MASSIVE CAVEATS, it’s violent, it’s bloody, it’s very sweary, it’s pretty weird and it’s fucking bleak, so you have been warned. Overall Flixwatcher and guests award In Bruges 3.58 (so nearly a 4) - a second watch from Jen (with less sleeping) might have bumped it up to a 4, which was generally how Twitter felt too. What do you guys think? Have you seen In Bruges? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #059 Nebraska with Chris Smith and Will Roe from Lord's Cricket Ground
Will and Chris return for Episode 59 and we’re reviewing Will’s choice Nebraska. Not a documentary on the Bruce Springsteen classic album but the 2013 Alexander Payne comedy drama starring Bruce Dern. Part road trip, part snapshot of Middle America and part portrait of dementia, shot in black and white Nebraska is funny, poignant and a fantastic vignette of a dysfunctional extended family. Interestingly this was the first film Payne wasn’t directly involved in writing, yet it feels very much like he could have. It’s very hard not to love this film, the cinematography is beautiful, the whole cast is superb, it’s very, very funny, warm and moves along at a lovely gentle pace. We also discover the most watched films by Chris and Will are Mrs Doubtfire and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid respectively.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='61']Overall Nebraska scores a very deserving 4.28 from Flixwatcher and guests and there was a lot of love for it from Twitter too. Highly recommended. What do you guys think? Have you seen Nebraska? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #058 Fargo, with Tom Salinsky and Ned Sedgwick from Global Pillage and GrownupLand podcasts
Welcome to Episode 58! Our guests are Ned from Global Pillage and Grownup Land and stepping in last minute to save the show Tom from all of the podcasts (Global Pillage, Grownup Land, The Guilty Feminist and Best Pick) and we’re reviewing the Coen Brothers classic Fargo. What is there to say about Fargo? It’s the kidnapping gone wrong ‘fake’ true story set in snowy Minnesota with a stellar cast of William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare. Oscar winner and genuine modern classic, crossing the line between thriller and dark comedy, largely regarded as one of their finest.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='60']Bringing back dating memories for Tom unsurprisingly Fargo scores highly across all the categories, not good enough to take the crown from What We Do In The Shadows but coming close with 4.47 overall. Ep #057 The Magdalene Sisters, with Liam from Spocklight and Eleanor Parker from Bygones
It’s Episode 57! Liam from Spocklight and Eleanor from Bygones join Kobi and Helen to review The Magdalene Sisters, Eleanor’s choice. The Magdalene Sisters is a 2002 film from Peter Mullan that follows the experiences of three young girls sent to the Magdalene ‘laundry’ in 1960s Ireland for their sexual promiscuity. A period in Irish history the Catholic Church would probably not want to celebrate, the laundries became slave houses and the women there suffered horrendous crimes against them. Based on true stories you can probably get the idea that this won’t be a fun film - but it is an incredibly important film and the stories deserve a voice. Knowing this you’ll go in much better prepared than Kobi!
Scores [supsystic-tables id='59'] Scoring strongly on recommendability and unsurprisingly low on repeat viewing The Magdalene Sisters scores a 4 overall. A powerful piece of historical cinema that deserves a bigger audience. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Magdalene Sisters? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #056 Their Finest, with Sara Mae and Ruby from The Sugar Baby Confessionals
Episode 56 sees The Sugar Baby Confessionals Sara Mae and Ruby join Flixwatcher to review Their Finest, the choice of Sara Mae. Their Finest (and occasionally Their Finest Hour) is a 2016 film from Lone Scherfig (One Day, An Education) starring the wonderfully on form Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy. Based on the 2009 novel ‘Their Finest Hour and a Half’ it tells the story of the making a moral boosting Ministry of Information film about Dunkirk during The Blitz. You wait until 2016 for a film about Dunkirk and then you get three at once, except only one of them really pays any attention to the role women played during the war. Despite feeling at times very much like a made for TV film and suffering from some heavy-handed moments in the plot, Their Finest is an inoffensive, very charming and well-acted film looking at the (often) hidden roles women played during the war. Scores [supsystic-tables id='58'] Unsurprisingly Their Finest scores high on the small screen score but low on repeat viewing, overall (despite Sara Mae’s enthusiasm and Kobi’s post Easter chocolate coma!) scores a fair 3.4. What do you guys think? Have you seen Their Finest? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #055 Grandma with Jen and Dave from The Family Tree Podcast
Jen and Dave from The Family Tree return for Episode 55 where we review Grandma, a 2015 comedy drama starring the awesome Lily Tomlin. The grandma (lesbian, widow and poet) in this film doesn’t conform to the usual granny stereotype, this film is part road trip for an abortion and part exploration of grief. Grandma benefits from a strong supporting cast in the form of gravelly Sam Elliot, Judy Greer, Marcia Gay Harden and the fabulous Laverne Cox.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='57'] At 79 minutes this is a spectacularly short film and anyone with even the slightest interest in a bad tempered, lesbian Lily Tomlin should definitely check it out. Scoring a very respectable 4.13 overall (Helen and Kobi scoring the same for the first time!) we recommend Grandma. What do you guys think? Have you seen Grandma? What did you think? Ep #054 One of Us with Natalie Nethers and Imriel Host of the ‘Wanna Be’ Podcast
It’s Episode 54! Imrie and Natalie return for the documentary One of Us. This 2017 documentary follows the lives of three people who have chosen to leave the environment of Hasidic Judaism. Did you know Hasidic Jews fear the internet? If the answer is no and you’re curious why you might find this challenging documentary of interest. A sort of expose and sort of suspense thriller this film looks at the treatment of three different people who try to leave their communities. All three stories are sad, depressing and scary, there really isn’t much positivity to take from their experiences.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='56'] While the stories of the individuals here are all important and should be be heard One of Us lacks in resolution or any kind of positivism the film lacks balance or perspective - scoring low on repeat viewing (as do most documentaries) overall we score it at 3.32 - worth an investigation. Ep #053 City of God with Adam from ‘Little White Lies’ and Chris from ‘Easy Rider Raging Podcast’
Welcome to Episode 53, returning guests Chris (Easy Riders, Raging Podcast) and Adam (Truth and Movies - Little White Lies) are back to review Chris’s choice City of God (Cidade de Deus). The 2002 Brazilian drama from Fernando Meirelles is based on a novel by the same name that was loosely based on real events and depicts organised crime in the favelas from the end of 1960s and the beginning of the 1980s. City of God is a dazzling piece of cinema, mixing almost documentary style story telling with disco, drug dealing, photography and revenge - often violent but also frequently sharp and funny. If you haven’t seen it don’t be put off by the two hours run time or subtitles - it breezes by. Scores [supsystic-tables id='55'] City of God scores 3.73 overall - let down by the small screen score - but still respectable and received a lot of love from Twitter too. What do you guys think? Ep #052 Bernie with Chris Smith and Will Roe
Its Episode 52! Kobi and Helen are joined by Chris and Will to review Bernie (Chris’ choice), the 2011 black comedy from Richard Linklater starring Jack Black. The bizarre true story of mortician Bernie Tiede (Black) who amongst making the dead look glamorous also has a penchant for elderly widows and ends up becoming an unlikely companion for a very rich widow, Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine) and SPOILER ends up killing her. The film is a mix of straightforward filmmaking and mockumentary with talking heads from real life people from Carthage, Texas and sort of played straight and then sort of played for comedy by Black. The film was strongly received in American after its release but seems to have barely been seen or heard of by UK audiences - and there is good reason why. Its weird - given that it is a true story - about murder - the comedy feels weird and doesn’t achieve what it presumably intends to do and because the comedy is so weird it doesn’t work as dramatisation. One really for Jack Black completists only.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='54'] Unsurprisingly Bernie doesn’t score highly in any category, scoring 2.9 by Flixwatcher but more love was given from Twitter. Seen it? Ep #051 Mudbound with Annabel Bligh and Gemma Ware from The Anthill Podcast
Its Episode 51, Annabel and Gemma from the Anthill podcast join us to review Annabel’s choice, the Oscar nominated 2017 film Mudbound. A 2017 American period drama directed by Dee Rees based on the novel of the same name by Hillary Jordan. Mudbound was acquired by Netflix following its Sundance Film Festival premiere and it earned itself four Oscar nominations, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song for Mary J. Blige, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography - making Rachel Morrison the first woman ever nominated in the category and Blige became the first person to ever be nominated for an acting and song award during the same year. YES, thats Mary J. Blige, in case you were wondering and she is pretty excellent playing the matriarch of the black family. Featured alongside a lot of actual mud is a strong supporting cast including Carey Mulligan, Garett Hedlund, Jason Clarke, Jonathan Banks and Jason Mitchell that all give solid performances, with both families being affected by the aftermath of war against the backdrop of the deep racist Ku Klux Klan.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='53'] Mudbound scores low on repeat viewing - it is not an easy watch - not necessarily rewarding but historically interesting and relevant. Overall it scores 3.25, high on recommendability but not so high on repeat viewing, if its on your list move it to the top now. What do you guys think? Have you seen Mudbound? What did you think? Ep #050 You Can Count On Me with Sam and Simon from “Picturehouse Podcast “
Halfway to 100 it is Episode 50! Simon and Sam from the Picturehouse Podcast return for Simon's choice, the 2000 Kenneth (K-Lo) Lonergan drama You Can Count on Me staring the wonderful Mark Ruffalo and Laura Linney. Don't be fooled by the TERRIBLE promotional posters for this film, it isn't a romantic backpacker comedy one of the posters would imply or a grimacing laughter fest either - it is a complex and carefully observed film about family and grief. Both Linney and Ruffle are terrific in what were both breakthrough performances then, supported by a young Rory Culkin and the greatest performance by a moth in the history of cinema (Best Supporting Moth is yours little guy!).
Scores [supsystic-tables id='51'] Scoring a very respectable 4.1 overall this is definitely worth a watch if only for the moth, JOKES! The film is great, go watch. Ep #049 The Meyerowitz Stories with Gail Porter and Boyd Hilton
For Episode 49 we break the no Adam Sandler rule to review the 2017 Noah (Bumbag) Baumbach film The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). Joining us are returning guests Gail Porter and Heat's Boyd Hilton. If you're a fan of dysfunctional family comedy dramas set in New York you'll be in for a treat with Baumbach stepping in to fill the neurotic void now it’s no longer okay to watch Woody Allen films. Anti Sandler enthusiasts Gail and Helen had different reactions - Gail didn't bother to watch the film but Helen enjoyed the film and would consider re-watching Punch Drunk Love as a result. Starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Marvel and Emma Thompson, it’s a fantastic ensemble cast and although re-treads some familiar Baumbach territory (difficulty in parking in New York) and isn't his best (see Frances Ha, The Squid and the Whale...) it's funny in places and recommended for completists.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='51'] Scoring 3.85 overall, brought down massively by Gail not having seen it - not a challenger to our highest Flixwatcher rated film What We Do In The Shadows ·but worth a watch. Ep #048 The Babadook with Dave Pickering and Jen Adamthwaite from from Getting Better Acquainted and The Family Tree
"It’s Episode 48! We welcome back guests Dave and Jen from Getting Better Acquainted and The Family Tree to discuss The Babadook, Dave’s choice.
The Babadook is a 2014 Australian psychological horror mother and son film, directed by Jennifer Kent, and a firm favourite of Mark Kermode.
Part nightmarish fairytale, part exploration of grief, part creaky house horror The Babadook is a terrifying beautiful journey into madness making one of the most intriguing horror films of recent times.
What it lacks in gore and blood it makes up for in tension and fear, think Don’t Look Now and The Shining, at times genuinely terrifying!
Scores [supsystic-tables id='50']
Overall The Babadook scores 4.1 - pretty high and strongly recommended by Flixwatcher and Dave and Jen, rather surprising was that less love was shown from Twitter. Potentially a bit of a Marmite film.

Ep #047 Pride and Prejudice and Zombies with David K Barnes and Beth Eyre from Wooden Overcoats!
On the eve of their latest season Beth Eyre and David K Barnes came into the Flixwatcher Pod Studio to talk about “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ for Episode 47! P&P&Z, as it will now be called, was chosen by David who wanted to see if this film would satisfy his desire to be the only person sitting in the center of the venn diagram of horror films, comedy films and Jane Austen adaptations. It turns out he might well be the only person! The full weight of the concept of P&P&Z is bourne wholly on the title and unfortunately suffers the same burden as many high concept films. The premise has a great idea, but the execution does not see the film all the way through to the end. The Flixwatcher Crew ranged from apprehensive and reluctant to excited to watch the film and all feelings prior to watching were justified. P&P&Z started off better than most of the crew expected and surprised most the the guys sitting round the table, but that “high” start ebbed away and by the 3rd act there was a lack of interest.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='49'] David admirably defends P&P&Z and gave it a 3 across the board. It picked up it’s highest rating of 3.5 in the Small screen Score category and but there was very little appetite to watch it again! What do you guys think? Ep #046 Creed with Hannah Dunleavy and Jen Offord
Its Episode 46! We’re reviewing Creed with Jen and Hannah from Standard Issue! The 2015 sort of spin-off, sort of sequel sequel in the Rocky film series. Michael B. Jordan is the son of Apollo Creed and Sylvester (‘sentient piece of corn beef’) Stallone returns as Rocky. If you have a vague interest in the Rocky series and can get over the fact the main character is called ADONIS Creed then this film is for you. If you have no interest in the Rocky series, or boxing and think a main character called ADONIS Creed is ridiculous then step out of the ring! Scores [supsystic-tables id='48'] Creed scores a respectable score overall of 3.1, considering Helen’s low scoring. If you’re a fan of Rocky and boxing (or The Wire for that matter) you’ll enjoy this - if you don’t then probably don’t bother, unless you have a spare two hours and 13 minutes and no other plans, knock yourself out! Ep #045 Hurricane Bianca with Iszi Lawrence and Tom Gilliford
The forecast for Episode 45 is for a hurricane - Hurricane Bianca to be precise! Bake (2016) Off Tom and Izi from The British Museum Membercast return to Flixwatcher to review Tom’s choice, a sort of spin-off from RuPaul’s Drag Race starring the one and only Bianca Del Rio. Hurricane Bianca is a sort of school revenge, gross out comedy, with drag. Tom’s description of the film is much, much better than the actual film, it is sort of well-meaning but the delivery (crass, loud and offensive) doesn’t work, generally, women (not in drag) do not fare well either. It doesn’t even feature a realistic representation of a rat. There are much better films that explore drag and LBGT identity that are much better (we reviewed Paris is Burning recently - check that out instead of this) but if you are particularly invested in RuPaul’s Drag Race you might find something to enjoy here.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='47'] Unsurprisingly Hurricane Bianca doesn’t score highly, across any category. Scoring a Flixwatcher first of a total of 0 from everyone - for repeat viewing. NO ONE wanted to watch this again. Scoring 2.1, it's not great, do let us know @Flixwatcherpod if you braved the forecast and actually enjoyed it! What do you guys think? Ep #044 Birdman w Gemma and Susan from “Hayley and Ruth: Two Stars”
Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it Batman? No its Episode 44! Susan and Gemma from Hayley and Ruth: Two Star return to review Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Award-winning 2014 black comedy starring everyone’s favourite Batman, Michael Keaton. Birdman is the other film about drumming that came out in 2014 (the other was Whiplash), well it features drumming and filmed to appear as one sequence. If the prospect of Michael Keaton wondering around Times Square in his tight whiteys doesn’t get you interested, we honestly don’t know what will! Featuring a performance from Keaton that balances comedy with sadness so perfectly its a tragedy in itself it didn’t win the Oscar. Supported by fantastic performances from Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Amy Ryan and Edward Norton (in his pants), more comedy please Ed. Scores The recommendability was really really high and overall Birdman scores 4.1. Its no Tootsie but we still recommend it, despite the lack of love from Twitter. It would have been higher but Kobi gave it a 2 for small screen score. Boooooooo! [supsystic-tables id='46'] What do you guys think? Have you seen Birdman? What did you think? #Ep 43 Adam Buxton and Zoë Jeyes talking about “The Squid and the Whale”
In episode 43 Adam Buxton and Zoe Jeyes return to review Zoe’s choice The Squid and the Whale. The 2005 semi-autobiographical comedy-drama written and directed by Noah Baumbach with Wes Anderson producing. Now if that doesn’t float your boat you probably won’t enjoy this as much as Zoe and Helen! Set in Brooklyn in the late 80s it tells the story of two boys and their different reactions to their parent's divorce. Walt idolises their father Bernard who happens to be a total douchebag and Frank sides with his mother. Its a film about pretentiously over analysing things and features a memorable performance from Billy Baldwin (everyone’s second favorite Baldwin).
Scores [supsystic-tables id='45'] At 81 mins runtime this film is a breeze and if you’re a fan of either Bumbag or Wes Anderson you should definitely watch this. Scoring a 4 overall from Flixwatcher and guests and 4 squids from Twitter we highly recommend it! What do you guys think? Have you seen The Squid and the Whale? What did you think? Forget what you think you know about voguing, fishy realness and drag queens - this is the ultimate history in drag culture. 80s New York City was a changing time, this documentary follows the different ‘houses’ (LaBeija, Xtravagnza, Ninja), voguing and living their, often dangerous, lives on the streets. The end result is a complex performance of race, gender, class among the African-American and Latino communities and their different identities. The documentary offers an insight into this vibrant, underground world, never judging or making assumptions about its queens.
Scores [supsystic-tables id=44] Scoring overall 4.2 - a very high score for a documentary (despite low repeat viewing score) and there was a LOT of love for it from the Twitter reviewers. Highly recommended - even for the drag-phobics! What do you guys think? Have you seen Paris is Burning? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #41 Diary of a Teenage Girl with Eleanor Rushton and Jenny Redmond from Story Etc Podcast
Welcome to episode 41! Eleanor and Jenny from Story Etc return for The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Eleanor’s choice. A 2015 coming-of-age comedy-drama set in the late 70s San Francisco starring Kirsten Wiig and Bel Powley in a breakout role. It follows Minnie’s sexual awakening and creative growth as an artist. Surprisingly explicit it tackles inappropriate relationships in a refreshing, non-judgemental and unapologetic way and features great performances by all the leads. Don’t be fooled by its cover, there is humour but it’s not a quirky indie comedy, in a reversal of the manic pixie dream girl Minnie isn’t defined by saving a lost middle-aged man and she is in control of the sexual situations.
Scores [supsystic-tables id=43] There was a lot of love for this from the guests and hosts and The Diary of a Teenage Girl scores 4.2, not quite on the Rolodex of watches but recommended! #Ep35 Serpico w Adam from 'Little White Lies' and Chris from 'Easy Rider Raging Podcast'
Its Episode 35 and Kobi and Helen are joined by Chris (Easy Riders, Raging Podcasts) and Adam (Little White Lies/LWL Truth & Movies) and we’re reviewing the Al Pacino classic, Serpico, Adam’s choice. Frank Serpico is a honest, by the book New York City cop in the 1970’s not content with fighting crime on the streets he turns his attention to bringing down corrupt cops. Largely considered a classic, this Sidney Lumet film marks the beginning of what would become the defining period in his career, he earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for this and went on to make The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon and And Justice for All (which all earned other Oscar nominations). Serpico himself is a loner, aloof and a bit odd, subject to regular outbursts of anger its a perfect vehicle for the what we know now as the trademark Pacino performance and New York is the gritty, shady backdrop and supporting character.
Scores [supsystic-tables id=37] It doesn’t quite live up to its classic status for Helen and Chris but still scores slightly over a respectable 3, boosted by Adam and Kobi’s more favourable points. It does however feature some outstanding fashion statements from Pacino and solid dog performance, so if you’re into THAT this film is for you. What do you guys think? Have you seen Serpico? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

#Ep34 The Breakfast Club with Iszi Lawrence and Tom Gilliford
Iszi and ‘Bake Off’ Tom join Helen and Kobi for Episode 34! We’re reviewing the John Hughes 80’s classic and Iszi’s choice The Breakfast Club. All the school cliques (the princess, the jock, the brain, the weirdo and the rebel) turn up for detention on a Saturday morning and we spend two hours with them as they attempt to break down the stereotypes and maybe/maybe not become friends. Do you remember the sexual assault scene? Chances are you don’t, you remember the song and the dancing and probably some of the quotes but this uncomfortable moment seems to have been left out of the nostalgia surrounding the film. It still standouts out as one of the more interesting teen films from the 80s, but its fair to say it's not aged particularly well in places. If you haven’t seen it and are curious to see what the hype is about then you should watch this to make your own mind up, if you’ve seen it before and vaguely remember it you may want to revisit it and see how you feel about it now.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='25'] Tom HATED this film (it's like childbirth) and this is reflected clearly in his scores and it scores just over a 3 - not as high as the Flixwatcher team would probably have predicted. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Breakfast Club? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

#Ep33 Okja with Gail Porter and Boyd Hilton
In this episode of Flixwatcher podcast we are joined by the lovely Gail Porter and the lovelier Boyd Hilton and we will be discussing the Netflix original film Okja. Okja is Gail's choice and she chose it as it was recommended by her daughter. It was directed by Korean director Bong joon-ho and written by Jon Ronson. It is a story set in the alternative present-day where the Mirando Corporation as lead by Tilda Swinton's character seeks to solve the problem of feeding the world by producing genetically modified super pigs. One such super pig, the eponymous Okja, is raised by a young girl called Mija who lives with her grandfather on a farm in Korea. Mija finds out that are Okja has to be taken away and goes on an adventure to save her best friend. Episode 33 crew found it quite difficult to assign a genre to Okja but that doesn't necessarily seem like a problem. Everyone enjoyed the cast and the overall theme and vibe of the film.
Scores Okja scored a slightly disappointing 3.5. It scored highly on recommendability and engagement whilst watching but scored lower on repeat viewing and small screen score. It was a shame that many people didn't get the opportunity to see Okja at the cinema, however, it is great that films like this can get as wide a release as possible via Netflix What do you guys think? Have you seen Okja? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

#Ep32 The Prophecy w Adam from Fixer International and Michelle from Tempus Magazine
It’s Episode 32 and angelic Adam and Michelle return for The Prophecy, the Christopher Walken fantasy thriller about evil angels. It’s Adam’s (Fixer International) choice and Michelle (Tempus Magazine) joins Helen and Kobi to review “the best angel film made” (quote Adam) in the war against heaven and hell. Featuring an early Viggo Mortensen appearance and Elias Koteas with hair, it’s also a favourite of Simon (Bigger Boat Film Quiz). It’s almost a cult classic but fails to win new fans with Helen and Kobi. Released in 1995 it looks and feels much older - the SFX are, well, a bit naff. Horror sceptic Kobi remains sceptic of the horror genre and Helen, a horror fanatic (and Elias Koteas fan) wasn’t impressed! The plot is too incoherent, it’s so slow and over indulgent and the acting is hammy, it neither works as a horror nor a fantasy.
Scores Unsurprisingly it doesn’t score highly, scoring 2.4, there will be fans of this out there but not Flixwatcher! If you do decide to give it a go - do not go for the big screen experience!! There are other films about angels, most of them much better, send us your favourites!

#Ep 31 Sing Street with Jenny and Eleanor from “Story Etc“
In Episode 31 we are joined by Jenny and Eleanor from Story Etc to review the awesome Sing Street! Set in Dublin in the 1980s it follows the musical adventures of the band Sing Street - taking influences from Duran Duran and The Cure - it’s part musical part coming of age film. Driven by love at first sight the front man Connor convinces Raphina to star in his bands video for The Riddle of the Model, from there the band and friendships grow. Sing Street is a super sweet film that’s funny and magical and has its heart wholly in the right place. It celebrates friendships and first love and soundtracks with catchy and quirky tunes. Don’t put off by the musicals tag, it’s a film with songs in - it’s not La La Land or Les Mis - we promise you’ll be warmly rewarded with this gem of a film.
Scores Sing Street scored very high across recommendability and generally well for repeat viewing, small screen and engagement (especially from Helen!) - overall a very high 4.2. A lot of love on Twitter too. Not seen it yet? What ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!?????

#Ep 30 Hunt for the Wilderpeople with Will and Joe from “Exploding Helicopter“
It's the big THREE OHHH! Episode 30 sees Will and Joe return from Exploding Helicopter - your premier podcast for exploding helicopters. BOOM! This time we’re reviewing Joe’s choice Taika (THOR. RAGNAROK) Waitit’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople There’s no hiding that Flixwatcher are BIG Taika Waititi fans, currently our highest scoring Flixwatcher film is his comedy horror What We Do In the Shadows, so we were pretty happy to review this. The plot is pretty simple, Ricky Baker is a pretty bad egg and ends up on the run with his adopted Uncle Hec - the whole film works because of Waititi’s warm, sweet and daft humour and performances from Julian Dennison and Sam Neill. There are some moments where, quote Will it feels like it’s “trying too hard for quirk”, but its hard not to fall for the films charm, silliness and Kiwi humour.
Scores It doesn’t beat What We Do In The Shadows - honestly though what will? - but scores full marks on the recommendability and overall scores a very respectable 4.1. A charming pick me up from the weird, uncertain reality we’re living in today. What do you guys think? Have you seen Hunt for the Wilderpeople? What did you think? #Ep 29 The Edge w Sam and Simon from “Picturehouse Podcast “
In this episode (#29) Sam and Simon from The Picturehouse Podcast will be talking about the film "The Edge" starring Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin, Elle MacPherson, Harold Perrineau and, of course, Bart The Bear. This film can be seen to be a pallet cleanser from the multi-award-winning film The Revenant. What is not as well revered as The Revenant it seems to have a very strong following amongst those that have seen in, with many people claiming that it is this their favourite film! The edge tells the story of multi-billionaire Charles (mentioned over 140 times) and his companions as they fight to survive after suffering a plane crash. The survival is ended as they soon find out that they are being tracked by a kodiak bear who soon kills one of the party leaving two of the team in the wilderness.
Scores Scores from the guests in the episode are actually very high. Helen and Kobi dragged the scores down somewhat. Particularly in the repeat viewings category. Overall The Edge scored a respectable 3.4. Our Twitter followers seem to side with Sam and Simon with a plethora of four and five stars! What do you guys think? Have you seen The Edge? #Ep 28 Dallas Buyers Club w James Barr and Dan Hudson from "@gaynongay "
Dan and James from A Gay & a Nongay join us for Episode 28 and we’re reviewing Dallas Buyers Club, Dan’s choice. This 2013 biographical drama swept up the all the acting awards for its two leads Matthew McConaughey (riding the wave of the Mcconaissance) and Jared Leto. It tells the story of cowboy asshole Ron Woodruff who gambles, sleeps with prostitutes, takes all the party drugs available, rides bulls, a wildly stereotypical Texan hustler and finds out he has AIDS after a freak accident hospital trip. After initially being in denial and being a massive homophobe he gets a change of heart and decides to set up an (illegal) Buyers Club where patients can buy into his cocktail of unlicensed and imported from Mexico drugs. Leto plays Rayon (a fictional character added into the real-life elements), a trans woman with HIV, who helps Ron get patients for his Buyers Club and give the film a much-needed warmth and sensitivity.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='28'] Scoring highly on recommendability but low on repeat viewings - standard for anything either based on real life or a documentary - and surprisingly on the engagement from Kobi, overall Dallas Buyers Club scores 3.7 (so nearly a 4). #Ep 27 Adam Buxton and Zoë Jeyes talking about "What Happened, Miss Simone"
Hello from Episode 27! We’re joined by Dr Buckles himself Adam Buxton and Zoë Jeyes (producer of the London Podcast Festival) we review Adam’s choice the 2015 Netflix documentary What Happened Miss Simone? Where we and our guests also reveal our favourite music documentaries. The documentary combines previously unreleased archival footage and interviews with Simone's daughter and friends. While its a pretty standard documentary in terms of format, starting with her discovery and mentoring through to her early successes with I Loves You, Porgy and then her decline in the 1970s following her involvement in the civil rights movement. Scores [supsystic-tables id='29'] Scoring highly on recommendability but less so on the repeat viewing, overall it still scores a very respectable 3.8 (that’s really a 4!) If you’ve always liked Nina Simone, but don't really know much about her life or her lesser know songs - this is definitely for you. Filled with spellbinding performances, honest first-hand accounts the film charts the continuous problems and torment that seems to plague such talented artists without melodrama and cliches. #Ep 26 Turbo Kid w Ben and Ed from "@TopFilmTip"
Its Episode 26! Turbo Kid is the choice of Ben and he joined by Ed and they are Shabbos Rollers quizzers, cinephiles and awesome friends. Without the Shabbos Rollers there would be no Flixwatcher podcast. Turbo Kid is a post-apocalyptic, 80s infused, ultra violent, comedy gore fest. THIS IS NOT A FILM SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN! Think Mad Max meets Peter Jackson’s Braindead, in this particular future there is no water and mad bastard overlord Zeus is grinding up people to make his own supply. Turbo Kid and Apple (get it?!) end up on the run from Zeus and survive Zeus warrior henchmen. Featuring triple stack torsos and an particularly inventive bicycle torture scene this is not for the squeamish. If this is your thing then jump right in. Among the piss and gore is fantastic performance from Laurence Leboeuf as Apple, a manic pixie dream girl on overdrive and its glorious.
Scores [supsystic-tables id='25']Scoring 3.9 - practically a 4 isn’t it, a high score for a relatively unknown (and short - 95 minutes!) film. All the makings of a cult classic. What do you guys think? Have you seen Turbo Kid? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #025 Eega Maakhi aka "The Fly" w Helen Zaltzman from "The Allusionist" and Matthew Crosby from “Pappy's”
Episode 25 sees Helen (The Allusionist, Answer Me This) Zaltzman (the first lady of podcasting) and Matthew (Pappy’s) Crosby return for Helen’s choice Eega/Maakhi (The Fly). Badly dubbed mish mash of genres served up Bollywood style. We can only assume the delirium felt by Helen after a traumatic house move affected her decision to revisit this terrible film. The hero of Eega is murdered by a jealous rival and reincarnated as a fly, who then takes revenge to save his love interest. Thats it - for over two hours. Featuring a fly weight lifting and other ridiculous overly long predictable scenarios, unmemorable songs and terrible cgi - not fun for all the family. f you’re after an emotionless mess of crazy fly revenge antics with characters devoid of personality - with songs then this is definitely for you!
Scores [supsystic-tables id='25'] Despite Helen Z’s best efforts Helen S still thought this film is terrible - scoring 2.9 - which is fairly good considering. Please send us your scores! What do you guys think? Have you seen Eega? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!

Ep #024 Young Frankenstein w Gemma and Susan from "Hayley and Ruth: Two Stars"
We're back! It's Episode 24 and we’re in with a classic! Susan from Hayley and Ruth: Two Stars choose Young Frankenstein which was the second film that director Mel Brooks released in 1974 (The first was Blazing Saddles). Young Frankenstein follows Gene Wilder's Dr Frankenstein (Pronounced "FRONKENSTEEN") a talented american based neurosurgeon that whats to maintain a distance between himself and his grandfather the madcap Victor Von Frankenstein. This was until he inherits his grandfather's fortune and then heads to live in his inherited castle with Igor, Frau Blucher and Inga
Scores [supsystic-tables id='25'] Young Frankenstein was a delight for all around the table! Kobi had never seen it before whilst the others had done but not recently. It's a classic that still looks great and benefits from being shot on the initial set and, of course, Mel Brooks' awesomeness and the excellent cast! Scoring 4.14 - A high score as expected!
