The Rocketeer "Using the stolen rocket-pack for the first time, racing pilot Cliff Secord has taken to the skies - in a desperate bid to save the life of a fellow flyer!" - from the opening of chapter 2, on page 19 That breathless style of narration and the accompanying first-rate illustrations (to wit: just look at that striking action hero pose adorning the cover . . . which is incredibly misleading, because his pistol-packing scenes last for a single scant page) ought to help in making The Rocketeer - possibly best remembered these days from the very good 1991 live-action film version by Disney, done in the vein of the Indiana Jones series - a sky-blazing success. However, I was disappointed by this book - it's one of those rare cases where the movie inspired by it is much better! The titular character is a dork who usually lucks into being heroic rather than, you know, actually being solid hero material. The two stories were subpar (they were supposed to be connected, but the second one confusingly heads off in another direction after an obligatory origin tale) and the so-called humor seemed forced most of the time. The sole saving grace? Said 'hero's girlfriend was drawn to resemble the real-life pin-up queen Bettie Page. However, a pretty face was not enough to save the day in this case.

Who on earth is Dick Grayson? In an attempt to answer this very question, I'm joined by the wonderful Heath Fodor! Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Dick first appeared in comic books in April 1940, Detective Comics #38. He quickly became the very first Robin, assisting Batman in his crime-fighting adventures. Dick has become a fan favourite, with a generation of comic book readers identifying with the young man's struggles to find his own path in life. A YOUNG OBI-WAN MUST FEND FOR HIMSELF ON A STRANGE NEW WORLD! This week Mike embarks on a book review for Padawan by Kiersten White; a novel centred around a young Obi-Wan Kenobi shortly after being taken on as a padawan by Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan travels to a new world, after being guided by a Jedi from the High Republic, he meets a group of children who seem to have strange force abilities, but there is more than meets the eye, as this mystery unravels around Obi-Wan all while he questions where his place is in the galaxy. As per all of Mike’s book reviews, it starts with his spoiler-free thoughts, then he gives plenty of warning before delving into his spoiler-filled thoughts, giving an overview of the book’s plot, some connections to other content and more! Make sure you go back and listen to episode 28 of SWCIC (from October 2020) to hear Mike’s review of Claudia Gray’s Master & Apprentice and Mike’s review of Mike Chen’s Brotherhood in June 2021. Two seasoned players, two new players and one invested observer gather round a battered, blood stained table to discuss one of the greatest video games ever made, The Last of Us. In this epic discussion they talk about the impact of the game on them as players, representations of violence and why Joel and Ellie make such interesting protagonists. The Last of Us was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony in 2013. It was written by Neil Druckmann and directed by Bruce Stanley and Neil Druckmann. The soundtrack is mind blowing, the original score was composed and performed by Gustavo Santaolalla. Paranoid Review by Steve Huey Paranoid was not only Black Sabbath's most popular record (it was a number one smash in the U.K., and "Paranoid" and "Iron Man" both scraped the U.S. charts despite virtually nonexistent radio play), it also stands as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time. Paranoid refined Black Sabbath's signature sound -- crushingly loud, minor-key dirges loosely based on heavy blues-rock -- and applied it to a newly consistent set of songs with utterly memorable riffs, most of which now rank as all-time metal classics. Where the extended, multi-sectioned songs on the debut sometimes felt like aimless jams, their counterparts on Paranoid have been given focus and direction, lending an epic drama to now-standards like "War Pigs" and "Iron Man" (which sports one of the most immediately identifiable riffs in metal history). The subject matter is unrelentingly, obsessively dark, covering both supernatural/sci-fi horrors and the real-life traumas of death, war, nuclear annihilation, mental illness, drug hallucinations, and narcotic abuse. Yet Sabbath make it totally convincing, thanks to the crawling, muddled bleakness and bad-trip depression evoked so frighteningly well by their music. Even the qualities that made critics deplore the album (and the group) for years increase the overall effect -- the technical simplicity of Ozzy Osbourne's vocals and Tony Iommi's lead guitar vocabulary, the spots when the lyrics sink into melodrama or awkwardness, the lack of subtlety, and the infrequent dynamic contrast. Everything adds up to more than the sum of its parts, as though the anxieties behind the music simply demanded that the band achieve catharsis by steamrolling everything in their path, including their own limitations. Monolithic and primally powerful, Paranoid defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history.
