Indie Comics Spotlight: A chat (albeit with some minor technical glitches and booze) with Kyle Stück
Tony invited Kyle on to talk craft and writing and they drank a little (Burbon for Kyle and Vodka for Tony) and had some technical glitches, which were left in to preserve authenticity. It is a gloriously fun show. Please listen and buy Kyle's work.

TV & Movie Reviews: Doctor Mordrid (1992)
TV & Movie Reviews: Doctor Mordrid (1992)
TV & Movie Reviews: Doctor Mordrid (1992) After a long stretch of time off from the TV&Movies, we're Chris and Dave are back to tackle the totally-not-ripped-off-Doctor-Strange movie, "Doctor Mordrid". This 1992 film is like a magical cocktail mixed with a hint of Marvel confusion and a splash of supernatural sorcery. It's as if Doctor Strange decided to take a vacation but got stuck in copyright limbo and had to go by a different name. Picture this: You've got Jeffrey Combs, who's basically the lovechild of Sherlock Holmes and Merlin, playing Doctor Mordrid. He's like your friendly neighborhood sorcerer, but with an impressive collection of mystical artifacts instead of web shooters. Now, let's meet Kabal, our villain. He's got that classic bad guy look with the evil laugh to match. He's trying to bring chaos and darkness to the world, but he probably missed the memo that says "no capes," because he's rocking some serious villain attire. But wait, here's the twist – "Doctor Mordrid" wasn't allowed to throw the Marvel name around, so they had to get creative with their own sorcerer-in-chief. It's like they had to change his name from "Steve Magicpants" at the last minute. The film's got mystical battles, sorcery showdowns, and more spells than a Harry Potter marathon. It's a low-budget, straight-to-video extravaganza that's part superhero flick, part fantasy, and all-around charming in its B-movie glory. So, buckle up for a magical mystery tour with "Doctor Mordrid," where mystical artifacts, cheesy effects, and a dash of confusion combine to create a cult classic that's pure enchantment... or something like that. Plot Summary: Doctor Mordrid is like if Doctor Strange decided to take a break from saving the world and started moonlighting as a magical landlord. Meet Doctor Mordrid, the sorcerer-next-door who's here to fix mystical plumbing issues and keep supernatural pests in check. He's like the ultimate tenant, but instead of paying rent, he's battling ancient evil and taking out the magical trash. Think of him as the Martha Stewart of the mystical realm – he's got spells for redecorating and warding off interdimensional pests. But wait, trouble's brewing in the mystical condo complex! Kabal, the neighborhood villain, is trying to unleash chaos. It's like the equivalent of a bad neighbor cranking up their stereo at 3 a.m. but with more fireballs and dark magic. Doctor Mordrid doesn't just use a plunger; he's armed with spells, incantations, and a cape that rivals Batman's. And yes, he probably has a magical "no soliciting" sign somewhere. In a world where sorcery meets suburbia, get ready for a rollercoaster of supernatural shenanigans, magical mishaps, and the most enchanting eviction notice you've ever seen. "Doctor Mordrid" – because every neighborhood needs a sorcerer on speed dial! www.twitter.com/comicsinmotionp [email protected]

Mandatory Music and CD-Misplaced Childhood by Marillion
Mandatory Music and CD-Misplaced Childhood by Marillion
Misplaced Childhood Review by John Franck After the album-tour-album cycle of Script for a Jester's Tear, Fugazi, and the subsequent Euro-only release of Real to Reel, Marillion retreated to Berlin's Hansa Ton Studios with Rolling Stones producer Chris Kimsey to work on their next opus. Armed with a handful of lyrics born out of a self-confessed acid trip, Fish came up with the elaborate concept for 1985's Misplaced Childhood. Touching upon his early childhood experiences and his inability to deal with a slew of bad breakups exacerbated by a never-ending series of rock star-type "indulgences," Misplaced Childhood would prove to be not only the band's most accomplished release to date, but also its most streamlined. Initial record company skepticism over the band's decision to forge ahead with a '70s-style prog rock opus split into two halves (sides one and two) quickly evaporated as Marillion delivered its two most commercial singles ever: "Kayleigh" and "Lavender." With its lush production and punchy mix, the album went on to become the band's greatest commercial triumph, especially in Europe where they would rise from theater attraction to bona fide stadium royalty. The subsequent U.S. success of "Kayleigh" would also see Marillion returning to the States for a difficult tour as Rush's support act.  [-]

For ep 131, Mike delves the first 6 issues, which contain 2 story arcs; the first set during the High Republic era where he goes to the planet Turrak to help Scalvi natives, while the second is set before The Phantom Menace, where Yoda asks Dooku to help train some initiates, but when a Wookiee has a vision about a Trandoshian initiate, tensions rise, especially with Yoda & Dooku’s conflicting views on such matters. Mike gives information on Dooku, Dagobah, Coruscant and more! Yoda 1 was released Nov 23rd 2022, issue 6 was released April 19th 2023 and the trade paperback collection is due for release late 2023. Yoda issues 1-3 were written by Cavan Scott, with Nico Leon as artist and Dono Sanchéz-Almara as colour artist. Issues 4-6 were written by Jody Houser with artist Luke Ross and Nolan Woodard as colour artist. For more Yoda content, check out ep 33 of SWCIC for the Yoda’s Secret War arc, or check ep 47 for a short story of Yoda on Dagobah. You can also check ep 86 to hear why Yoda isn’t present for most of phase 1 of The High Republic. For the Age Of Resistance story where Kylo Ren goes to the dark side cave on Dagobah, check ep 52 and to hear more about Dooku’s backstory, check episode 26. Previously was another High Republic book review, with Lydia Kang’s Cataclysm from Phase 2, Wave 2 where tensions raise even higher with E’ronoh & Eiram, while Axel Greylark is in prison! In this sequel to Convergence, the tensions between E’ronoh & Eiram worsen as The Path Of The Open Hand become more aggressive, all while Axel Greylark is imprisoned, leading to the devastating Night Of Sorrow – Mike provides his spoiler-free thoughts, before providing plot and character information! As live-action Star Wars shows have paused for the moment, our trio of rebels have continued with their review of Star Wars: Rebels with season 2! This is Maff’s first time watching too, so hearing his reactions is very interesting! In more detail, this episode is a sequel to the first season of Rebels and the trio’s first RR episode, so make sure you go back and listen to that if you haven’t already, but in this episode, they discuss how season 2 feels different from season 1, it’s comparisons to Andor and the best & worst parts of the show (including sound design). Maff then notes how he’s been consuming far more Star Wars content than he expected, Dave talks about The Clone Wars and then they discuss Hondo Ohnaka and the purrgils. The trio then delve into Ahsoka’s character and of course, the finale; Twilight Of The Apprentice! Mandatory Music and CD: The Real Thing by Faith No More
Mandatory Music and CD: The Real Thing by Faith No More
The Real Thing Review by Ned Raggett [-] Starting with the careening "From Out of Nowhere" driven by Roddy Bottum's doomy, energetic keyboards, Faith No More rebounded excellently on The Real Thing after Chuck Mosley's was fired. Given that the band had nearly finished recording the music and Mike Patton was a last minute recruit, he adjusts to the proceedings well. His insane, wide-ranging musical interests would have to wait for the next album for their proper integration, but the band already showed enough of that to make it an inspired combination. Bottum, in particular, remains the wild card, coloring Jim Martin's nuclear-strength riffs and the Bill Gould/Mike Bordin rhythm slams with everything from quirky hooks to pristine synth sheen. It's not quite early Brian Eno-joins-Led Zeppelin-and-Funkadelic, but it's closer than one might think, based on the nutty lounge vibes of "Edge of the World" and the Arabic melodies and feedback of "Woodpeckers from Mars." "Falling to Pieces," a fractured anthem with a delicious delivery from Patton, should have been a bigger single that it was, while "Surprise! You're Dead!" and the title track stuff riffs down the listener's throat. The best-known song remains the appropriately titled "Epic," which lives up to its name, from the bombastic opening to the concluding piano and the crunching, stomping funk metal in between. The inclusion of a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" amusingly backfired on the band -- at the time, Sabbath's hipness level was nonexistent, making it a great screw-you to the supposed cutting-edge types. However, all the metalheads took the song to heart so much that, as a result, the quintet dropped it from their sets to play "Easy" by the Commodores instead!

Mandatory Music and CD: Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses
Mandatory Music and CD: Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses
Appetite for Destruction Review  by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Guns N' Roses' debut, Appetite for Destruction was a turning point for hard rock in the late '80s -- it was a dirty, dangerous, and mean record in a time when heavy metal meant nothing but a good time. On the surface, Guns N' Roses may appear to celebrate the same things as their peers -- namely, sex, liquor, drugs, and rock & roll -- but there is a nasty edge to their songs, since Axl Rose doesn't see much fun in the urban sprawl of L.A. and its parade of heavy metal thugs, cheap women, booze, and crime. The music is as nasty as the lyrics, wallowing in a bluesy, metallic hard rock borrowed from Aerosmith, AC/DC, and countless faceless hard rock bands of the early '80s. It's a primal, sleazy sound that adds grit to already grim tales. It also makes Rose's misogyny, fear, and anger hard to dismiss as merely an artistic statement; this is music that sounds lived-in. And that's exactly why Appetite for Destruction is such a powerful record -- not only does Rose have fears, but he also is vulnerable, particularly on the power ballad "Sweet Child O' Mine." He also has a talent for conveying the fears and horrors of the decaying inner city, whether it's on the charging "Welcome to the Jungle," the heroin ode "Mr. Brownstone," or "Paradise City," which simply wants out. But as good as Rose's lyrics and screeching vocals are, they wouldn't be nearly as effective without the twin-guitar interplay of Slash and Izzy Stradlin, who spit out riffs and solos better than any band since the Rolling Stones, and that's what makes Appetite for Destruction the best metal record of the late '80s.   [-]

Indie Comics Spotlight: Creator Corner with Matt Kindt
Indie Comics Spotlight: Creator Corner with Matt Kindt
Flux House, a new boutique imprint at Dark Horse that features the writing (and sometimes art) of bestselling cartoonist Matt Kindt, with crime, science fiction, and humor stories, all told and presented in startling and untraditional ways. Kindt has been writing and illustrating espionage and action-fueled comics like BRZRKR (with Keanu Reeves), Apache Delivery Service, BANG! Dept. H, Ether, Fear Case, MIND MGMT, Folklords, Revolver, 3 Story, Super Spy, and Pistolwhip for the last two decades. And it’s safe to say that he is having a moment this spring... (More details below.) This year brings: The publication of his new series, Spy Suburb. This 3 part mini-series from Dark Horse Comics and Flex Books launched on January 11. This comic is the funniest thing Kindt has ever written. As Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson said, “If you close your eyes and imagine John Wick being dropped into a Wes Anderson film, you’ll have a sense of the world of SPY SUPERB.” The release of Mind MGMT: Bootleg in hardcover (February 15, comic shop date; February 28, bookstore date). The latest series in the conspiracy-laden and mind-twisting universe of MIND MGMT, MIND MGMT: BOOTLEG marks the first time the series has been illustrated by an artist other than Kindt, featuring the work of Farel Dalrymple, Jill Thompson, David Rubín, and Matt Lesniewski. In MIND MGMT, a covert government agency of psychic super spies fell into oblivion after one of their top agents went rogue. What looked like the end was only the beginning as a former leader of MIND MGMT explores the darkest parts of the world and recruits a team of forgotten agents to rebuild the organization, bend reality, and go to war with a competing agency.   Mister Mammoth is the world’s greatest detective. The only mystery he can’t seem to solve? How, exactly, he became the world’s greatest detective… This spring, Dark Horse will publish the clever existential noir MISTER MAMMOTH, the first-ever original graphic novel from bestselling cartoonist Matt Kindt's all-new imprint, Flux House. Writer Matt Kindt will be joined on MISTER MAMMOTH by internationally acclaimed artist Jean-Denis Pendanx in his U.S. debut. Also in March, BOOM! Studios will publish the final issue of BRZRKR the 12-part comic book series co-created and co-written by movie star Keanu Reeves. The issue is co-written by Reeves and Kindt, and features artist Ron Garney, colorist Bill Crabtree and letterer Clem Robins.  In April Flux House and Dark Horse will publish Hairball by Kindt and artist Tyler Jenkins with colors by Hilary Jenkins. In this supernatural thriller from the Eisner-nominated creators of Fear Case and Apache Delivery Service, a dysfunctional family’s mounting problems may or may not be caused by an unlikely culprit: the family’s cat.  Upcoming Flux House publications will take many forms and formats, with each release having a distinct presentation including unique trim-sizes with two publications to be magazine-sized and special print features (like die-cut and fur) and a punch-card dust jacket that reveals a secret message. These publications are personally designed by Kindt to be both books and art objects. Today's episode is brought to you by Reburn.  Please, treat yourself and get a copy of this brilliant indie comic.
