Rev. Dr.Susan K Smith is a writer, musician, and ordained minister in the United Church of Christ who is currently the Director of the Office of Clergy and Leadership Resource Development for the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, Inc.A graduate of Occidental College, Dr. Smith earned her M.Div. at Yale Divinity School and her D. Min at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. While at Yale, she was the first African American woman to serve as president of the student body and won the prestigious Wolcott Preaching Prize.
Following graduation from Yale, she served as an associate minister at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois under the mentorship of the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr, who was the pastor of Trinity at that time.She served asthe pastor of Advent United Church of Christ in Columbus, Ohio for 22 years before resigning that position to form a non-profit, Crazy Faith Ministries in 2013. She leads the organization in her understanding that church is not where you go, but what you do.
She is interested in the intersection of race, religion, and politics, and has been an activist in Columbus since 2013. She has studied the history of the Christian church and its practice of racism. Her most recent book, With Liberty and Justice for Some: The Bible, the Constitution, and Race in America earned literary awards.Before entering the ministry she was a reporter for the Port Arthur News and wrote free-lance for the Houston Chronicle. She now writes regularly for her blog, Candid Observations on which she examines issues of religion and racism.
She has written regularly for the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, the Dallas Examiner, and the Wilmington Journal.She is the author of several books, including Carla and Annie, Forgive WHO?
