Hey everybody, welcome back.It's another Bourbon Pursuit, and we're gonna be venturing down Whiskey Row because it's the only place you can probably find this bottle.Yeah, hopping on our bird scooter, you know, hopping around Main Street.
Wing, wing, exactly.And so we're talking about Old Forester's 117 Series, and this is their Rum Finished Bourbon. So, as Old Forrester does, they age everything for about four years, but then they finish these in particular rum casks.
They didn't say exactly where the rum came from or anything like that.Their heat cycle, too, so four years is really like 18 years.Oh, is that what it is?I'm kidding.Is that how the math works?Yeah.
You've been hanging out with Chris Morris for a while.Oh, no, that's right.That's how it is.But it is at 95 proof, and then a 375 ml bottle is $65. Okay.Yeah.
Rum finishes, you know, cause typically rum is like been in an ex bourbon cast and rum, and then they use the rum barrels multiple times.You really have to like let them sit for a long time to get that influence.Any influence whatsoever.
And we're going in blind with this.So we haven't even really tried.Well, we did try this at the Derby.
We did try at the Derby. But the tough part was, is we just came off like the, you know, the, whatever it was, $15,000 bottle.That was amazing.It was.That was where they air dried it in the middle of the winter circle.
And you're just like, come on guys, really?And you tried it and you go.
And so this is, we got to have a chance to try it, but now this is from the actual bottling, and this is the 117 rum finish.So here we go.I'm with a nose.Very light on rum, if I had to say, but it's still kind of there.
Yeah, has that banana runt, strawberry runt kind of nose.Yeah, I'd say the strawberry is definitely there on the run side. Yeah, it's like that, you know, the candy at your grandmother's.
Candy on the, you know, at your grandmother's that looks like a strawberry with the red wrapper.
I love those by the way, because then you try them and then the strawberry liquid just oozes out of the middle, but you can't overdo it and then put it to the back of your jaw and bite down into it.You ruin the whole experience.
That's what it is.All right, on with the taste. So it's very like, I mean, very tropical.I get like pineapple, a little bit of mango.Mango?Yeah.
I'm getting like kind of summer frozen drinks, like a pina colada kind of flavor profile on the front palette.And then there's a hint of like molasses on the back end.But, um,
Yeah, it's it's very fruity tropical in the front end, but it is Like rums are they're very light, you know, so very light tropical furt and a little bit of hint of molasses on the end I would say if you're looking for something that is gonna completely take your taste buds for a left-hand turn This is probably gonna be it Because I look at it and I'm just like well
It has some qualities of the bourbon, but then there's also like a bitterness, I think, that the rum brings into it that I'm not there all the way.
And then when you dive into it and you say mangoes and stuff, it's like, yeah, but I got to really dig in.
And the only thing that makes me think of mangoes is when you go to Costco and you have those dried mangoes that come in that massive pack, I can kind of get that.I haven't had those.Oh, you're missing out.
But I'm just saying like in a dried fruit perspective, there's a little bit of hint there, but again, it's, it's just a little bit out of left field for me on that one though. Yep.Well, let's go ahead and let's rate this.
So on the nose, where are you at?I'm sideways.I mean, it's pretty light, delicate.I was trying to pull for flavors and whatnot.I agree.And the taste?I am torn.There's things I like about it.
I like those tropical fruit notes, but it's still just overall very light.You know, it's just light.So like three quarters thumbs.Three quarters.Okay.All right.We'll give it three quarters.And the finish?
Sideways there's just not a ton on the finish.It's You know it it's easy, but there's I'm just searching for something more.I I don't know what did you say the proof on this?If I said 108 would you be it's 95 95 9 gotcha
Yeah, I could see this benefiting from being a little higher proof, give it more body texture on this one.But I get it.We're our pals have been punished.Yeah, it's the point.
And the reason they probably do this is because now you have a 117 series that is probably going to last quite a while in the gift shop that people want to go and find and be able to take home for themselves.
