From 8 till 10, it's Phil Troll on Big L International.
Hello there, having a bit of technical trouble tonight?MUSIC! Right, so here I am, just about, I think.Let's turn the echo on, that's better. So, what have we got on today's show, then?Too much echo for a start.Let's turn that down.
Yes, we had a few technical problems. We hope we've overcome them now.We couldn't get one of the mini-discs to work.Never mind, not to worry.Let's tell you what we've got.
We've got about 10 advance requests tonight, and we're going to do the Beat the Intro, so have a listen, see if you know what it is.
So that's the competition, let's play it again. Contact Big L Radio now!Phone 01 255 808 113 Email studio at biglradio.co.uk Come and join Phil Troll and the team Big L International!
So, we've done our competition, and we'll have our first request then.
From 8 till 10, it's Phil Troll on Big L International.
It's Rafferty's motorcar from Valdunican, and it's especially for Ron over there in Dulwich.
Now Denny O'Rafferty's motorcar is the greatest I declare It's made up of bits and pieces that he picked up here and there The engine must be ages old but it's still got lots of power With a gallon of stout and a petrol tank it does 90 miles an hour What a wonderful motorcar, it's the greatest ever seen It used to be black as me father's hat, now it's 40 shades of green On TV and the radio and in every public bar The burning question of the day is Rafferty's motorcar
Now two of the wheels are triangular and the third one's off a pram The fourth is the last remaining wheel from off a Dublin tram The number plate's in Gaelic and the plugs won't even spark And the chassis came off of a tinker's car that collapsed in Phoenix Park Now go for a ride in the motor car and you'll end up with the shakes The road from Cork to Dublin is a vale of pains and aches When traffic lights turn red the hedge, at best, jump out the door
that Denny treads on the brakes, his foot'll go through the floor.Oh, what a wonderful motorcar, it's the greatest ever seen.It used to be black as me father's hat, now it's forty shades of green.
On TV and the radio and in every public bar, the burning question of the day is Rafferty's motorcar.
Now if you could see the upholstery, your eyes would start to pop It's nothing but empty beer crates with a load of sacks on top The windscreen's gone to Lord knows where and there's mud balls in the horn And I reckon he'd only get half a quid if he took it to the pawn Now Denny was driving around last week when the engine did the splits
It went up in smoke and nearly blew O'Connell Street in bits They searched around for Denny and found he'd landed up by heck Away up on top of the GPO with his LPS round his neck Oh, what a wonderful motorcar, it's the greatest ever seen It used to be black as me father's hat, now it's forty shades of green On TV and the radio and in every public bar The burning question of the day is Rafferty's motor
Well, I haven't had a chance to look at the emails yet, but I know we got one from Patricia, so a very good evening to you.And we'll have a look at the emails in a moment.
Well, that's the next request for Ron, but before that, we've got a commercial break. We'll be back after the commercial break.
Hello, Mike Marwick here, inviting you to join me here on Big L International every Saturday night at 10 for two hours of rock'n'roll from the 50s and 60s, plus some vintage Motown and soul.
We call it Rock'n'Roll Saturday, bringing back the golden years of rock'n'roll.Join me Saturdays at 10 here on Big L International.
Drip off and snuggle up with Kev Reid for Big Love, Big L International, midnight, Monday through Friday.
The Harvest Show, Saturday and Sunday mornings, from 6 until 8am.Isn't that a bit early?Yeah. With the music, you don't hear anywhere else anymore.Thank God.
So, we're back with you.So, our second request then for Ron, it's Boz Skaggs and one entitled Hollywood.
I'll see you You're sure there's not enough for me, no, Mary, no.No, she did, she did that. You're all the ladies' talk. Now there's not enough for you.Oh, run under, fly.The roses, holy roses. The time's set.Sparks fell from the sky. Action!
Do it again!Camera!Action!Do it again! Do it again!
So I was just listening to Charles over there in Wanstead.I couldn't finish your message because the record's run out on me.Anita was first in with the correct competition entry and I was just about to listen to Charles and the record finished.
But never mind, not to worry.I've got a bit of a crackly mixer tonight. Oh dear, oh dear. Now, what are we going to do next then?Let's have a look. We've got a couple more records coming up for you.
The next one is for Bernie in Pearlie, and we're going to play that for you next.
It's The Supremes, Under Four Tops.River Deep, Marion High.
When you were a young girl, did you have a quiet dream?
And I love you, baby, like a flower loves a spring. And I love you, baby, like a rhyme I love to sing.
And I love you, baby, like a schoolgirl loves a pie, yeah. And I love you, baby, river deep in my heart.
So our next record then from 65.And I thought it was supposed to be queued up, but it wasn't.
It's The Beatles with Day Tripper.
This one's especially for Peter in Plymouth.
She's a big teaser She took me half the way there She's a big teaser She took me half the way there now She was a day trip up One way ticket, yeah It took me so long to find out She only played one night stand.Tried to please her.
She only played one night stand. She was a day-tripper, Sunday driver, yeah.It took me so long.
So that's the fabulous Beatles there for Peter and he'd like another Beatles record coming up very shortly. And don't forget we've got our Beatles show on Thursday nights from 9pm until 10pm.We'll be back after the commercial break.
It was the first online 60s radio show anywhere in the UK and now the live version has come to Big L. My Generation from 8 to 10am every Sunday morning on Big L International with back to fronts, hits, b-sides and rarities and hopefully your interaction.
That's My Generation every Sunday morning with yours truly Gary Jackson.8 till 10am and don't hog the duvet.

Stop prodding me while I'm trying to do women emails.Music.Alicia Dixon laugh.
And competitions.Answer the postcard, darling, answer the postcard.Join in the fun.10 till 12.Every Sunday morning.
Hi, this is Keith Mardown, inviting you to join me here on Big L International every Sunday evening between 6pm and 8pm UK time. We'll share some musical memories with a bit of this, a bit of that, and a bit of the other.
And what more could you ask for on a Sunday?
Right, so Anita was first in with the correct answer, then we had Charles over there in Wanchett who's also got it right as well. And a very good evening to Dean, Beverly and Rochelle who's with you.So I hope you're all enjoying the show.
John in Hammersmith hasn't got a clue what it is.Patricia over there in Munich knows what it is.And who else have we got here? Hang on a minute.Oh yeah, Bruce in Oregon, new to me.Hi there Bruce, welcome along to the show.
Not heard from you before, but delighted to hear from you.And he's telling me that Bobby Bear also did a version of the song.Yeah, so you've obviously got the right answer then. Okay, who else have we got here?Otto.
You've got the right song, and the right artist, but the title you said isn't quite right. It's not called what you said. But I'll, well, give you one and a half points for that there, Otto.
If you want to try and get the correct title to get yourself absolutely right, then that's fine by me.So that's what we've got on the competition so far.Let me see, we're doing the competition again.
So, John would like a few clues.Well, here's a Welsh boy who's singing and it's all about the name of a place
in Michigan, and it's quite near to where Motown started off, so that's a clue for the name of the song.Right, what have we got next then? We'll be back after the commercial break. We've done that one. We've done the commercial break.
What's the matter with this machine this morning?Right, another one from the Beatles then for our friend Peter. This is Yellow Submarine, so we're going to go underwater for this one.
Down where I was born lived a man who sailed to sea.And he told us of his life in the land of submarines. So we sailed on to the sun.
In our yellow submarine We all live in a yellow submarine Yellow submarine, yellow submarine We all live in a yellow submarine Yellow submarine, yellow submarine And our friends are all aboard Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play We all live in a yellow submarine Yellow submarine, yellow submarine We all live in a yellow submarine Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
a life of ease.Every one of us has all we need.Sky of blue and sea of green in our yellow submarine.
We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine.
From the LP of the same name that's the fabulous five fabulous for the Beatles and one entitled yellow submarine and Yeah, hope you enjoyed that one So that was especially for Peter in Plymouth. Now we're going to say hi to Tina in Plymouth.
And this time, Tina would like to hear I Think of You.And it's by the Merseybeats.
When the night is cold and my arms want someone to hold, I think of you. When the rain is falling, I hear you calling to me.I think of you.
I lie awake each lonely night I think of you, yeah, that day You walked away and out of sight But now my arms just long to hold you Like they used to do before I'm a broken man, now you don't love me
Now the night is cold And my arms want someone to hold I think of you Now the rain is falling I hear you calling to me I think of you I think of you every minute I lie awake each lonely night Now you don't love me anymore
When the night is cold and my arms want someone to hold, I think of you. When the rain is falling, I hear you calling to me.I think of you.I think of you.
So that was the Merseybeats with I Think of You and we've got one coming up next from the Merseys.I think they're similar.I think maybe the different people changed slightly but... We're gonna get it uptight.
Everything is gonna be alright.Got to have a good time now.
That's the station where you are right now.And I'm here right up until 10 o'clock this evening. If you're listening to the Thursday repeat, don't bother to enter the competition because we'll all be asleep.
You're listening to a recording of Saturday night. And if you're listening live on Saturday, well, you can have a go.And we'll give the answers about 10 minutes before we go off the air to make way for Mike Marwick's Rock and Roll Saturday.
No need to go out Saturday night as the entertainment's right here with the Phil Troll extravaganza.
so sad about you i think it's called oh no so sad about us the merseys that's coming up next for tina
So sad, my love So sad, my love Sad, I've got some new desires now Sad, this boy just can't turn back So bad about us So bad about us Bad, never meant to break up Bad, now we'll never make up
Apologies mean nothing when the damage is done But I can't switch off my lovin' like you can't switch off the sun So sad about us So sad about us We never meant to break up And now we never make up
Well, that's the Merseys, and one I've not heard before.I'll tell you, well, you had the right song beforehand. What you've just said now is wrong. But you had the right song, it just didn't have the right title, that's all.
And you did have the right artist, of course, as well. So there we are, Otto, and John in Hammersmith's got it right. So let's go through who we've got again.
We've got Anita in Epsom, we've got Charles in Wanstead, John in Hammersmith who's got it right now, Petrita, So everybody's got it right now so far, I think, except for Otto just hasn't quite got the right title. But never mind.
Bruce in Oregon knows what it is.Clever clogs. He knows who else covered the song as well.Well done, Bruce.Otto, as I say, struggling a little bit with it.John's got it right now.Ron in Dulwich has just come in with the correct answer.
Cousin Margaret, good evening to you.Margaret doesn't know what it is.Well, it's a Welsh boy, you know, it's a Welsh boy.All right, so that's a clue for you.And that's how far we've got with it.So we'll carry on from there, shall we?
We'll be back after the commercial break.

I was on a land-based pirate station in the beginning of 1979 and I made a jingle and it went something like this.
You're listening to Radio Amy on 221 and then about two months or so after that this record came out so I reckon he nicked my jingle as an idea for a song but of course it wasn't copyrighted so I couldn't do anything about it And he's made millions!
I'm so jealous. But never mind, a great musician nevertheless. And that was especially for Patricia.Sorry we didn't get the one you wanted, but well, we hope you like that one anyway. If you like Dire Straits, I'm sure you would have liked that one.
And I know you like Toto very much. And again, I haven't got the particular one you wanted, but I have got this one called Africa. Which is a wonderful, wonderful record.I hope you enjoy this one, Patricia.
And we'll try and get those other ones for you next week.
I hear the drums echoing tonight And she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in 1230 flights The moonlit wings reflect the stars That guide her toward salvation I stopped an old man along the way Hoping to find some old forgotten words Or ancient melodies He turned to me as if to say Hurry boy, it's waiting after you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I guess the rain's down in Africa We're gonna take some time to do the things we never did
The wild dogs cry out in the night As they grow restless longing for some solitary company I know that I must do what's right As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside Frightened of this thing that I've become Gonna take your life and drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
truly wonderful that record and Toto of course they were a bunch of session musicians and they played on hundreds and hundreds of records for other people but then they eventually decided to get together and form the group Toto and wow just so glad they did because they made so many absolutely wonderful records so Patricia I hope you enjoyed that one as much as I did um competition again then do you know what this is you haven't got too long now

You think you know me pretty well But how can you tell? You'll never get inside my head
The times we talk, we never speak We play hide and seek So many things are left unsaid Why can't you see What's on the other side of me The side of me That reaches out to you
Sweet thoughts and dreams Like drops of rain on rippling streams That wind and bend Rivers with no end Flowing on the other side of me
It seems I always get unstrung I trip on my tongue With words that come out something else I'm so afraid the things I say Might chase you away I have to hide behind myself Why can't you see what's on the other side of me?
The side of me that reaches out to you.Why must I hide these feelings that have been denied?Only you can set me free.See what's on the other side of me.
La la la la la la la la la.
Why can't you see what's on the other side of me inside? Why must I hide these feelings that have been denied?
Only you can set me free See what's on the other side of me On the other side of me On the other side
No, not Cliff Richard, what am I talking about?Neil Siddhartha with a great song there, The Other Side of Me.This is A Taste of Bitter Love from Gladys Snyder and the Pips.

Well that particular track starts off in the left channel and then it comes in on the right channel. It's a bit strange the mix really on that one.So back to the 50s then.
1855 Here's Lonnie Donegan with the Rock Island Line
Now this here's a story about the Rock Island Line. The Rock Island Line, she runs down into New Orleans. And just outside of New Orleans, there's a big toll gate.
And all the trains that go through the toll gate, well, they gotta pay the man some money. But of course, if you've got certain things on board, you're okay. You don't have to pay a man nothing.
And just now we see a train, she's coming down the line And when she come up near the toll gate, the driver, he shout down to the man, he say I got pigs, I got horses, I got cows, I got sheep I got all livestock, I got all livestock, I got all livestock
And the man said, well, you all right, boy?Just get on through. You don't have to pay me nothing. And the train go through. And when he go through the toll gate, the train got up a little bit of steam and a little bit of speed.
And when the driver think he's safely on the other side, he shout back down the line to the man.He said, I fooled you.I fooled you.I got the pig iron.I got the pig iron.I got old pig iron.
Now tell you where I'm going boy down the Rock Island line, she's a mighty good road the Rock Island line is the road to ride Yes, the Rock Island line is a mighty good road And if you own the ride, you got to ride it like you're fine to get your ticket at the station on the Rock Island line I may be right, I may be wrong, you know you're gonna miss me

ABC, W, X, Y, Z. Cat's on the cover but he don't see me.Now I'm a rock on the line.She's a mighty good road.A rock on the line is a road to ride.Yeah, it's a rock on the line.She's a mighty good road.
And if you want to ride, you got to ride it like you find it.Get your ticket at the station on a rock on the line.Rock on the line. She's a mighty good road.Rock on the line is a road to ride.Yeah, it's a rock on the line. She's a mighty good road.

We've got Gary Lewis next.
They say that you're a runner-on lover Though you say it isn't so But if you put me down for another I'll know, believe me, I'll know Cause the night has a thousand eyes And a thousand eyes can't help but see
If you aren't true to me So remember when you tell those little white lies That the night has a thousand eyes You say that you're at home when you phone me And how much you really care
Though you keep telling me that you're lonely I'll know if someone is there Cause the night has a thousand eyes And a thousand eyes can't help but see If you are true to me
So remember when you tell those little white lies That the night has a thousand eyes One of these days you're gonna be crying Because your game I'm gonna play And you'll find out without really trying
Each time that my kisses stray Cause the night has a thousand eyes And a thousand eyes will see me too
And no matter what I do I could never disguise all my little white lies Cause the night has a thousand eyes So remember when you tell those little white lies That the night has a thousand eyes
Well, I've not heard that version before.Quite used to the Bobby V version, but that was Gary Lewis with The Knight Has A Thousand Eyes.Fiddle Troll is not as goofy as he sounds.
So, we've got a little record now from Helen Reddy, and it's one entitled Delta Lady.
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?And did I hear you say, he wasn't meeting you here today?
To take you to his mansion in the sky She's 41 and her daddy still calls her baby All the folks around Brownsville say she's crazy Cause she walks downtown with her suitcase in her hand Looking for a mysterious dark-haired man
They called her nil to dawn.Prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on.Then a man of love to Greece stood by her side.Promised her he'd take her for his bride. You hear the day Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?And did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today to take you to his mansion in the sky?
The pain that grows from days gone by And did I hear you say He was the reason you're here today
OK, so the competition then, Anita in Epsom got it right, so did Charles in Wanstead, with all his friends as well.John in Hammersmith eventually got it right, so did Patricia in Munich. Then we had Bruce in Oregon, a new listener to me.
Well done, Bruce.Otto nearly got it right.John in Derbyshire also got it.Ron in Dulwich.Yes, you got it.Margaret wasn't too sure. And we had Lee, another new listener to me.Yes, you got it right as well.So... That's the competition.
I bet you want to guess what it is then, don't you?Well, it was Tom Jonesboyer with Detroit City.
And now, look alive! And everything lights up, and it makes you want to shout.Talk about happiness, that's what we're talking about. Now money won't bring you happiness, but we know it will.Wow!Come on now, get a smile, get happy.Wow!
Here we go then with Tom Jones. The right hand channel will come in very shortly. This starts a bit funny this one.Detroit City.Come on then, suck it to me.
Last night I went to sleep in Detroit City. I dreamed about them cotton fields and home.I dreamed about my mother, dear old Pappy, sister and brother. And I dreamed about the girl who's been waiting for so long.I want to go home.
I wanna go home Oh, how I wanna go home Home folks think I'm big in Detroit City From the letters that I write They think I'm just fine, yes they do But by day I make the calls And by night I make the bars If only they could read between the lines
Cause you know I rode a freight train north to Detroit City And after all these years I find I've just been wasting my time You know what I'm gonna do?I'm gonna take my foolish pride Get it on a southbound freight and let it ride
I'm gonna go back to the loved ones The ones I left waiting so far behind I wanna go home Yeah, I wanna go home Oh, how I wanna go home Can't you hear me?I wanna go home
Oh, baby, I wanna go home Oh, how I wanna go home Somebody help me, I wanna go home, yeah
