Thank you, dear listeners, this is the Arutluk Index cultural podcast show.
My name is Jeldám Rimony, and my guest is Remo Andrássyk, the director of the Örema music program, one of the leaders of the Hangszert a kézbe program, with whom we are currently going to talk about the support of young Hungarian performers, about what opportunities there are for an emerging band performer.
Greetings to the listeners and to you too.
Let's start right away with the closing of this year's Happy Music, the Happy Music of the year 2023-2024.
More than 20 places have gathered the young musicians, we are talking about about a thousand musicians who have appeared, applied and measured themselves for the awards.
How do you see this year's performance compared to previous years, as a basic question?
I don't think there's much of a change.I'd say that bands are becoming more and more daring, and more and more open to all kinds of fusion stuff.
A lot of people are becoming more and more daring, and more prepared to become talent-seekers than they were in previous years.
And I see that this is where the biggest development is, in the fact that they are more learned, more conscious, and more daring.
Maybe something that would highlight a little bit, I don't know, maybe what the young listeners can pay attention to, if they listen to our conversation, what they should pay more attention to, which is even a little bit sensitive, a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek, maybe it can be improved.
Actually, by the way, in popular music, and this includes everything that today's contemporary pop music, because pop music is not really a good word, but we rather call it popular music, there are a lot of possibilities that are still unexplored.
And I would definitely encourage them to listen to a lot of music, with a very open mind, and really be even braver in music than they are now.
There is no real education for popular music, and that's why we always learn to suck in the musicality and musical knowledge of our ancestors. We dig it up, we dig it up. and then we try to create our own from it.
Well, in this creation of our own, we have to be braver so that the individuality, the uniqueness, can flourish much more.I still feel many times with bands that they play a little bit back.So they come, they're perfectly professional.
At the same time, we can find very few simple and unique motifs in their music. Many times they are more focused on trends, or they really play back their favorite things a little bit mixed.
And I think that Hungarian musicians are really successful, even in the world, if they take a part of their own musical roots back to it.Today, they do this even less, although I add the year, just like that.
It is clear from this that there is a perspective in it.So there is a future in the fact that if one can merge music in such a way that it actually goes back as far as possible to its own Hungarian roots or Hungarian folk music.
and he starts to fuse those with the modern musical influences, which obviously reach the young people. If someone can do this in a unique way, and now I call him the floater,
They won the talent search because they approached it in a very unique way.Not in the way that I described in words, what I see as a big perspective. Then a certain music appears in front of you.
And when you listen to the traveler, you have to be surprised that no, they did it completely differently.Everything is there from the creative elements that I talked about, but what you hear is unexpected.
And I think this is a really good way to go. By the way, in my opinion, this is not only the case with the Hungarian folk musical roots, but generally with Central European roots, and with those musical worlds that originate from antiquity.
They know little, but in the 1200s, there were talent researchers in Europe. all kinds of artistic, cultural talent seekers.
And, for example, you have to imagine that there were the same system of values, for example, in the jury, as in today's music judgment, but there was a very important thing, the spiritual content.
And for the spiritual content, in the 1200s, you could get as many points as for all other content. lyrics, musical knowledge, presentation, presentation, etc. They all have the same meaning as the spiritual content.
So the spiritual content is an incredibly important thing, because let's not forget that music is the nourishment of the soul. And if we approach this in this way, then we will probably have a very honest attitude and very honest music.
which, in my opinion, finds its audience in every case.So when something comes from the heart, it can be much more successful than the learned figures. And I think that this search is what I actually recommend to all young musicians.
So that they play music as honestly as possible, in the most innermost future.Because that's the plus content that I think is today's technocrat in the world, because the world of musicians has become quite technocratic.
I don't know, 11-year-old little girls play the guitar like they're crying.
But in fact, there is no background content that is not just about him practicing something at home with a lot of time and putting a lot of energy into it, which, of course, is depressing, but it's actually more of a technocrat.
It's interesting that you say that, because the other day I was talking to an acquaintance of mine,
Where are the boundaries between instinctive art and conscious art?Where is it that instinctive art becomes a shock?
Because we have these eccentric artists, whom we love very much, because they have a unique and creative consciousness, which few people have.
But at the same time, it's very difficult to work together, to be in the same space, because we have so much of this special genre, so to speak.
And on the other hand, there are very conscious performers, even in modern pop music, you can meet a Taylor Swift who designs everything perfectly in advance, even her music.
But at the same time, she doesn't have that kind of elemental power, which, I don't know, there was an old Watt Punk performer who said that he goes on stage and just what is so out of his soul, he pulls it out.
But at the same time, there is no such thing, not even the extreme.Because of that, people don't listen.
So where can you find what is now represented by the winning band, that there is that wholeness, there is that special side of creation, but at the same time, the whole thing is conscious, not just a broken thing on the stage.
Yes, it's terribly difficult to find a balance, and if there is no Patika measurement, there is no recipe for this. If there were, then it would be possible to produce stars. We can see the practice for this.
There is an industry, especially in the United States and in the English-speaking regions, which is a pop star. There are a lot of very good professionals there who probably really understand their work brutally.I think they are there for hours.
Obviously, here too, it is an important question of how much they can write down a talent's talent.
And when they put various tools behind it, these are primarily material tools for material things, so such a studio, such a video clip, such a team, such a marketing, a complete star factory, which I think we can't even imagine at home.
In fact, perhaps the reliability of this is that after a while, the feeling of obvious money-making and profit-making has passed, that, by the way, let's say, that young man, young entrepreneur,
This is how it is, this is the world, our world has become like this.I think that in our case, the amateur music talent show, that's the beauty of it.In many cases, an amateur band can do things he can afford what a professional musician can't.
So if you talk to a professional musician, it's not about making him feel good, it's about making money, making a profit. An amateur musician still has the opportunity to really make a heart.
and because our world is so full of music that there is really nothing to lose.So there is nothing to lose for a young person, and that is why I would say that they should be extremely brave in this matter, because there is nothing to lose.
how many millions of songs a day, the sun, the moon, the sun, the moon, the sun, the moon, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun,
playing better than the previous ten, the next ten even better than them, so it has such a seemingly endless line. And in the meantime, to understand, we did an interview with Steve Lucatel not so long ago.
Steve Lucatel, the legendary Toto band, singer, guitarist, really a legend. Toto is in the U.S.for a farewell tour.
And he answered one of the questions, that yes, I also feel that the 11-year-old Chinese girl humiliated me as a guitarist, but that's not the question, but to write the next Weaver Racket, which you only play twice, once you tap a few notes, or the next Africa, or the next...
I don't know, a song that entertains people for decades and attracts their attention. The song means something, it fills you with soul.If I'm sad, I can listen to it, if I'm happy, I can listen to another song like this.
So that's the real question, and I'm always looking for that in bands, where is that little plus that makes it a plus-spirit.
It's very interesting that you say that, because I've often met performers who I really listen to as a singer or a guitarist, and yet there, as a talent, and not just knowledge or practice, but that there is something that no one else can achieve on stage, but that the next VIVI can achieve.
Not every talent has the ability to write songs, because that's a completely different talent line.
You know, more than a thousand bands have appeared at the Eurovision Song Contest this year, and how do you feel about the fact that this type of music will be famous in the future? How rare is this?
How rare is it that not only talented musicians come together, who can even make good compositions musically,
but somehow they feel the vibration of the present age of the audience, and somehow they made a song that you were humming to yourself in three days, and it stuck in my head.
Yes, well, I notice that, by the way, I've been doing this for about 32 years.
with talent research, that in 3-5 year cycles, amazing talents appear. But to become a well-known musician from a talent, you need to have a lot of experience.
So it's not necessarily that someone is, let's say, a terrible product and can really create, has talent and writes great songs.
That doesn't mean that he's reached the audience yet, because no one knows what the chemical sign is, what we are, what age we become a truly loved musician. even the greatest musicians.Because it's simply not possible.
You have to meet the taste of the audience somewhere.I've seen bands appear and then disappear.I thought that in the next 10-15 years they will be defining bands.
Hungary, and I saw bands that I didn't feel their talent or their creativity, and yet they are there, and they work, they prosper, and many people love them.
So the situation is that after so many decades of these experiences, you become more and more careful in this matter, because I face the fact that I think about something, about a band, and then something completely different happens.
And this factor, which we can't really influence, can be played by many factors. So the luck that at the right moment there was an audience,
or maybe the profession made it so that it rose and made it great, or all of these, or the lack of all of these can cause a given band to become successful, known, recognized, or the opposite of this, which, by the way, is not out of their knowledge, so if, for example,
A band like this doesn't become a famous band from one day to the next. It's not allowed to hurt their feelings.Because we shouldn't forget one thing, when we start playing music, we should do it for ourselves first.
Obviously, there's a thought in the back of your mind, that it would be good to become famous with this.
But basically, in my experience, it all starts in friendly communities, that we make a band, we make music together, which then raises this friendly community even more, connects it even better, they start working together on a given thing, working together.
and this really raises them over the years. And I know a number of bands who, for 30-35 years, have actually been unsuccessful as a band, but they work together as an incredibly successful friendly company and are perfectly in tune.
with themselves, with the world, happy.
And I think that, by the way, one of the most important messages of music is that you don't have to achieve huge successes to have a happy little community, who, let's say, may only have 500 or 1,000 fans all over the country, but they love to do this and their life
It is necessarily better that they dedicate their free time to this, and they live and travel the country, meet their friends, or those who like them, always give them tasks, goals, which I think is extremely important, that there are goals.
Today's young people are less able to define their non-weekly goals.A week should be relatively easy. I don't know, a good ketchup, an expensive Italian sports car, good hours, good clothes, a few beers, and a relaxed life.
But in most of our cases, these goals, these times, meet reality, and reality is not precise. But, for example, in music, you can set real goals.
That we're making another album, we're writing a song, we're making a music video, we'd like to go on a tour. And this is not only the success of rock music.Because, in fact, if a person works and makes music and is not a dog-eater,
what he does, then these are indeed achievable goals. And I think that it is important to pass on these knowledge to the young people.
And at the Eurovision Song Contest, Eurovision is a bit different than other contests, because we try to talk to the young people about these things correctly.
On the one hand, we can give advice on the obvious professional issues, but on the other hand, there is a world-view question, and that is, we musicians, how do we stand up to the world? And how does the world treat us?
As a musician, and in this interaction, how can it be so long-term, that it is not a kind of sad origin, but the joy of music itself, which I can always carry on, forever, as long as I have the affinity and desire to deal with music.
Let's talk a little bit about that, because you mentioned it now, but I'm curious about your opinion, that you said that if someone is very talented, but doesn't find the time, or a lot of things are missing, or all of it is success, or predestinates failure to some extent, let's say someone is good at what he does, good at what he writes, good at presenting, and can even work in time, but you also said that there are a million things a day that interest this little dog,
I don't know, he doesn't move in the middle, he doesn't have any acquaintances or friends, he posts on Facebook, but now the algorithm doesn't work that way, he sees five people, so there are so many walls and barriers, you can fight against it in any way, so that not only luck is the factor, that you don't be like, oh my God, now I've reached 30, now I'm getting old, I'm going to be a rock star.
Look, I'm a guy from Miskolc. When I was 14 years old, there was a band playing in every cellar in Miskolc. The opportunities we're talking about now didn't exist at all.
Still, I think, if I think back to my career, when I was relatively famous as a musician in the band, as a musician, or later when I was an organizer, my happiest moments were still those.
Obviously, a young man has dreams, and that's probably part of it.
that you were still dreaming about such a beautiful world there, and I did everything for my dreams, and this actually created such interactions with my own contemporaries that I really had a very happy time, and most of my friendships were in that period.
So, in my opinion, it's not a good kind of goal-oriented attitude that I'm going to be a well-known star in Hungary in a year. It's possible, I've seen it, and some people have succeeded, but it's really not because of that.
So, I would try to suggest that if this is not the goal, but a companion, then it's quite the opposite.
You have to start, in my opinion, not with the goal of becoming a famous performer, but with the goal of conveying good thoughts, both musically and in the message of the lyrics, or in the whole.Meanwhile,
to live my life in a way that can't be done any other way.Because a musician has the opportunity to live in the world in a very special way.
I don't want to go into this now, but I'm thinking about the positive meaning, so not that I'm always talking about but in a completely different way.
Usually musicians are quite sensitive people, and they can experience a lot of things, which, if you manage to put it into songs, then you can live a very special life. And if this meets the taste of the audience, then that's the cake.
if not, then it should be noted that the cake itself is that we can live such a life.So I'm coming from this story, so I couldn't tell anyone that, I don't know, you're cheating.
Of course, there are a lot of disappointments, especially when you put a lot of energy into something. But these disappointments, in my opinion, are much easier to live with if, for example, these acquaintances,
I don't see such things as a goal, but I accept that it can be accompanied by what I do.If I do this well, then there is a good chance that that this will happen as well.
But in fact, it is important that this is not the goal, but the goal is to create something.
Let's make a plan for ourselves, which we carry out together, and then suddenly you realize that in fact, yes, the path is what is more important in many cases than the goal itself. It's like money.
If someone's goal is money, then there are often terrible human questions. But if money is just a tool to achieve your goals, then you usually learn to be a normal person. foreign
but the goal is to create extremely good things, and by creation I don't just mean the songs.
It's also creation when a community is created, a band is created, a band is surrounded by friends, relatives, acquaintances, perhaps co-workers, videographers,
journalists, graphic designers, other artists, and all of a sudden you find yourself in such a wonderful community, which I think is much more noble and a much greater goal.
And then, if I say it again, if you do it well enough, then I think that you will inevitably achieve the results that others may have deliberately achieved.
But let's go back to the beginning of the year, to the beginning of the new year.
If we look at it from this point of view, the new year is coming, now we are talking about a full-fledged travel series that can be looked back on a decade ago, and basically, what is the goal of the music of joy in the new year, and what is the path that goes with it?
The thing is, this is our 17th year, we have a very good team, Erőm a Zene has 24-25 talent.
There are 20 Hungarian talent researchers in 19 counties, one in each county, plus one in the capital, and there are talent researchers in three municipalities, one in Vajdaság and one in Felvidék.
Our small company has been working together for 17 years now, which does not mean that there are no older talent researchers, because we have three talent researchers who are already 30 years old.
There are those who have been with us for 10 years, and there are also those who joined us in the past year.So it's not a completely homogeneous system.Yes, there is dynamics in it, so it moves.
However, in the last eight years, since the voice-over program has supported us, we have tried to unify a lot of things in the list of talent researchers. We go to all talent researchers according to a similar approval system.
The same scoring and evaluation points work.If someone appears for example, in Zala county, then in Szabolcs-Szatmár, he gets almost the same complexity.
So it's a little bit like at the fast food chains, that there is such an expected minimum, which we have learned so beautifully today and we carry it well.So in this year, we set it on fire.
ourselves, that despite these, everyone's own unique face is a little bit better covered. So it's not such a completely stereotypical story.
It is completely different to step on stage in an agora than in a smoky club or on a large open-air stage, or in a theater.
in a completely different environment, for example, in a movie, which shows that there are differences everywhere, and we would like to address these as well, and by doing so, give the bands the opportunity to try themselves in the most diverse environments possible.
So that it's not just that it's always the same, So in this year, our goal is to show a little bit of these uniquenesses as well. What kind of changes do you expect to see compared to last year? Actually, I don't think there is any change.
Our system is pretty much the same.We are working under the program that supports voice-over start-ups.So we have the end result. On the one hand, the Eromazene series has a lot of money.
which has a separate prize, but in reality, most of them come because 10 of our bands automatically get into the big listening of the sound-occupying, starting-up-subsidies-supporting A-program, where they can be re-measured, and that already has a serious price, because the one who finally gets to the support, beyond the fact that he can see a considerable amount,
as a sponsor, they can get that amount for a whole year, even with such a sponsored status, where they get a mentor, where they organize the life of the band, the steps, they get them to the steps, or they can make a video clip, they make an album, so really, for a whole year, almost without a problem,
What is your experience as a band that came here to win, to finish this year? How much can they stand on their own feet, how much can they keep this success that they got with support? It's not an easy task.
No, it's not an easy task and not everyone can do it.
It would be a shame to say that you won on a system like this. and then became a well-known band from everyone. But in the past 16 years, we have made a list to see how many bands have started from the music of Öröm, and today the first, second,
in the third line, we managed to count nearly 40 bands. So I think that where there is perfection, there are these huge movements.Of course, there are several bands that we are very sorry about, but with the young people,
It is very difficult to judge, because we are people, and people have conflicting situations that they are not sure they can solve. It is no different with world stars.
If you follow a little bit of pop culture, you can see that bands have disbanded and re-formed.In many cases, after the disbandment, 3-4 much better bands came into existence, so it does not even support that they should not disband.
because you're looking for ways, and when you're looking for ways, sometimes that's part of it, too.
But the way I see it, the past, let's say, I think it's the ninth year that you've been in the music business, so it's a very successful support system. You know great bands. You can get into a lot of good bands from us, too.
And, by the way, they give you all the opportunities there. Obviously, what comes next is up to the band. But they got the opportunity to live a little, a full year, as a band should normally prosper.
So there it is, there is the opportunity, and from then on, It is up to them to live in the future with this or not, so that they try to keep their bands at a higher level or at least at the level they have reached.
As a closing remark, what would you say to the listeners, especially those who are listening to us, who want to apply for the music of joy, what advice would you give to the new applicants, what should they pay attention to, if they get into the music of joy talent search and measure their work ahead of you?
Rock'n'roll is not a dance, you have to pay attention to this.Rock'n'roll is a way of life. All right, thank you for being here with us, thank you to the listeners for being with us.
I had András Sükremó as a guest, I had Érrimai Ádám, and this is the Arútluk, the Index cultural podcast show.Goodbye to everyone.
This is the end of this episode.Listen to the advertisement.Did you know that the lemon swims in the water, but the lime sinks? That Gustave Eiffel designed a tower in Barcelona, but the city didn't ask for it?
And did you know that if you advertise with us, then you reach people who really listen to what you want to say to them? If you have a product or service that you would recommend to them, let us know.
