Al Bayan Radio presents Reviving the Prophetic Sunnah Presented by Nidal Ayyubi Bismillah, alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasulillah wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa man wala Assalamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters and welcome back to our series Reviving the Prophetic Sunnah.
Today we have reached the 8th of the month of Jumada al-Ula and our topic is drinking while sitting.
My dear brothers and sisters, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH wished for his Ummah to have distinct characteristics, even in matters that people might consider as habits, such as matters relating to eating, drinking, clothing, speaking, and other matters that the Western world calls etiquettes.
Sadly, my dear brothers and sisters, some Muslims might practice the Western etiquettes and abandon the rules and etiquettes the Prophet ﷺ taught his Ummah. One of these etiquettes is to drink while sitting, not standing.
Anas ibn Malik radiallahu anhu said, anna nabiyya sallallahu alayhi wa sallam zajra ani shurbi qaimah. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam disapproved the drinking of ghura while standing. He was asked radiallahu anhu, what about eating?
Thereupon he said, thaka asharru aw akhbaf. That is even worse and more detestable. And both these reports are found in Sahih Muslim.
Also in Sahih Muslim, my dear brothers and sisters, Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, none of you should drink while standing, and if anyone forgets, he must vomit.
And in another narration found in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad and others, he ﷺ said, if the person who drank while standing knew what was in his stomach, he would vomit it out.
And this hadith was declared sahih by Shaykh al-Albani in as-silsila tul ahadith as-sahihah.
However, my dear brothers and sisters, in Sahih Bukhari, Ali came to the gate of the courtyard of the masjid and drank water while he was standing and then said, some people dislike to drink while standing but I saw the Prophet ﷺ doing when he was drinking water
as you have seen me doing now.My dear brothers and sisters, O alama, the scholars reconciled between these hadith by stating that the prohibition or the forbidding mentioned in these hadith do not mean that it's prohibited.
Rather, it is to be understood as advice and that it is better to drink while sitting. And the hadith which described the Prophet ﷺ drinking while standing indicate that it is permissible to do so.
Imam Nawawi said, There is no contradiction in these hadith, praise be to Allah, and none of them are inauthentic, rather they are all authentic.
The correct view is that the forbidding mention in them is to be understood as meaning that it is disliked. The fact that the Prophet ﷺ drank while standing indicates that it's permissible to do so.This is all that needs to be said on the matter.
So my dear brothers and sisters, what is better is to drink while sitting and this is the sunnah. But drinking while standing is permissible but disliked. In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ gave a reason why it is disliked to drink while standing.
Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet ﷺ saw a person drinking while standing and he said to him, throw up.The man asked, Why?The Prophet ﷺ replied, Would you be pleased if a cat drinks with you?The man said, No.
He ﷺ then said, Something worse than the cat has drunk with you, the devil.
And this hadith, my dear brothers and sisters, is found in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad and has been declared as being Sahih by Shaykh al-Albani in his Silsila al-Ahadith al-Sahihah.
My dear brothers and sisters, Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned in Zad al-Ma'ad some of the negative effects of drinking while standing and the importance of drinking while sitting. He said, drinking while standing has numerous negative effects.
one of which is that it does not fully quench the thirst and does not settle in the stomach so that the liver can distribute the nutrients to the other parts of the body rather it comes to the stomach with speed and force and there is the fear that it will cause a chill or disturbance and may pass quickly to the lower parts of the body without moving gradually all of that is harmful to the drinker but if he does it occasionally or in the case of need it will not harm him
So my dear brothers and sisters, to conclude, let us be keen to drink while sitting as much as possible because it is the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ.
