Hey, this is Annie. And Samantha. And welcome to Stuff I Never Told You, a production of iHeartRadio. And welcome to another edition of Happy Hour.As always, if you're choosing to drink or whatever you're choosing to do, please do so responsibly.
Samantha, are you sipping on anything?I am.
And this is not a sponsor. Just FYI, but I decided, because I couldn't find my usual diet sodas, and I do have some diet sodas that I drink every now and again, that I found the 7-Up Shirley Temple Zero One.
Yeah, so they just recently came out with this. And so I was like, I'm gonna taste, I'm gonna try it out.And I think maybe it's because it's the zero sugar one that I got, that maybe it's not as good as I would hope.
But I think I just, what I discovered is I like tart drinks, so fruity drinks. And this is a little sweeter for being a zero sugar one, but like, you know, cause it has that vanilla kind of ish flavoring.
But anyway, so yeah, that's what I'm sipping on.What about you?Throwing it back old school, the Shirley Temples.
That is interesting.I am drinking some red wine. But I have to say, for this episode, I was going to try to make a cocktail for a very specific reason. And that is because our good friend of the show, good friend in real life, Holly Frey,
has a new book called Killer Cocktails, Dangerous Drinks Inspired by History's Most Nefarious Criminals, also by her co-host Maria. And we went to a little book signing that they did.And it was really, really fun.
A passage was read and a cocktail was made. And then just good times were had.But I was flipping through this because I thought, you know,
We've had Holly on before as a guest around Halloween about cocktails, and we made a cocktail that time, and we are trying to get her and her co-host from Criminalia to come on and talk about the book.
So I was flipping through, and I was trying to decide what cocktail I would make. There are a lot of cocktails in this book.Yeah. It is so many cocktails, so many amazing stories. The artwork is great.
So I just highly recommend, they don't know we're doing this, by the way, this is also not, this is just a genuine review. And there are so many things I do want to try that are in here. But I didn't have time to get things together.
Because I know you're probably tired of hearing about it now, but we've been running around.
Well, no, but it also, like, you have to prep.Like, we, the last time Holly was on, which was a long time ago, a lot longer than I had originally thought, because we actually had this conversation during the book reading, and I was like, oh, really?
Has it been that long?We were talking about the fact that we needed, because for her cocktail that she served for the reading, needed pumpkin spice.
simple syrup and I could not find it because that she needed that for our show so we were like oh no so we were like scurrying about and I could not find it so I had to make my own which I did successfully but like getting these ingredients kit is it is an endeavor you have to be very thoughtful and like try to pick out
specific ingredients because they do and she does because the cocktail she does these the creations and she does a great job in making really diverse different types of drinks and some of them are very like niche ingredients for cocktails because she's really like she has her own cantina
in her house.Very fancy. That is fully stocked and whenever we go to see her, it has a menu, has a theme, and when we go to see her, she goes all out in her cocktailing abilities. She is gifted in this craft. So it is.
Not all the recipes are like that because she does reuse a lot of the same things. But sometimes it's just like, okay, we have to get this, this, and this for those who are not gifted in the cocktail making. endeavors.
Yeah.Yeah.And I there are plenty of like all types of cocktails in here.So there are some that are like two ingredient three ingredient really easy. There's also mocktails.Yeah.I love that for them. But Holly does create these.
And I guess even though I knew it was a premise of the show that in their episodes they have a cocktail or a mocktail both. I didn't realize how many things she's had to come up with for that.
I was just so blown away that I had so many options to choose from. But yeah, it is out now.You can get it wherever you get your books. It's great for Halloween, which by the way, happy Halloween if you're listening to this when it comes out.
It comes out on Halloween. which Holly and I both love.We talked about that last time she was here.
Uh, and it's got just so many great historical notes, many of them, uh, of interest, of a Venn diagram of people who like this would like that because it's about, like, women who poisoned people or women pirates.
Yes, they did the reading on the woman pilot who was the last or maybe the first We actually did an episode too.I was really excited.I love when we have crossovers because, of course, we talk about some badass women, so do they.So we were like, yeah.
So it was even more fitting because we kind of knew the tales.
Yeah, it was cool.It was really cool. But yeah, we went out to the reading and we saw some people we hadn't seen for a while and hung out.And it was just, it was really nice. And I have, she signed, they signed our books.
And she signed mine, of course, with the Star Wars note, which I really appreciate. As is appropriate.Of course, what else? but yeah i did want to do i was i kept running around about what i wanted to talk about for this happy hour because
It's just a lot of stuff going on and I've been struggling with sadness. But I wanted to do something happy because I think a lot of us are dealing with that right now.And it is Halloween and Halloween is my favorite holiday.
So I just want to do a quick light thing about some of the other reasons I love Halloween that we didn't talk about in the episode with Holly.
because we did holly and i really went into why we like halloween but it also speaking of crossover does relate to your it was a samantha inspired episode on soup
It does relate, because one of the things I do love about Halloween is, as I've said, fall is my favorite time. It's my favorite, like the weather, I love the leaves, I love like a good like chilly wind.
And because of that, I do love soups, soups always, but it's nice when it's like cold outside. But I also love sweaters. And Samantha was kind of teasing me before this because I've been wearing Halloween sweaters, really bad Halloween sweaters.
No, no.So I was more confused.I was like, who is gifting you Halloween sweaters?Because like this is
We don't see each other often when we're getting busy, but of course we have to see each other at least twice, if not three times, sometimes a week via Skype. But this is the second one.I was like, it's a different sweater.Like, wait, how many?
Me too.We usually don't change clothes that often. To be clear. So when I was like, wait, this is a different sweater. It's like, oh, who is buying you these lovely Halloween sweaters?
She changed a sweater.Yes.So I purchased these myself. Because I do love sweaters and I just really wanted like the Halloween equivalent of the ugly Christmas sweater and so I purchased two.So you've seen them both.
It hasn't we talked about this in the soup episode It got cold for a minute and it hasn't really really been that cold and I'm a cold natured person And I just haven't had the excuse to wear these sweaters.
So I'm wearing them when I can And they do make me feel I like them they bring me joy They're goofy and I like sweaters. They look good on you.I But yeah, it's it hasn't been cool enough to wear them since I've gotten them.
So I but I like that I like sweater weather, I guess. Also, I think I was thinking about this. I feel that Halloween has seasonal food that for me, I wouldn't eat at another time.
I feel like a lot of other holidays or just times of year, whether I should or not, if it's in season or not, I will eat whatever. But Halloween has a very specific vibe for me of like, I only get this at Halloween. That is it.
I don't have it the rest of the year. And it makes it feel really special. It makes it feel really nice. And given the, like, the weather and I love the, the lights of like jack-o'-lanterns and I just love the whole thing.
It all comes together for me for a very specific feeling of this is Halloween.Christmas food I can get whenever like I just feel like it's a to me. a very specific feeling.
And I know that's not true for everyone, because some people will eat a pumpkin all year round, or will do whatever, and that's cool. But for me, it is very specific to Halloween.
Also, there are just things you can't do, like haunted houses, although they are starting to expand. There's a Valentine's Day haunted house I know of, and a Christmas one I know of, yes.
Well, it's usually haunted, it's Halloween haunted houses that are now doing also, which makes sense to me.
But I did want to say, because we didn't do the whole thing this year, but I think Universal, the Halloween haunted nights in Universal Orlando did an all women monsters haunted house this year. And I heard it was really good.
But they were talking about what we talked about in the issues of women in haunted houses and representation, but also in the people who are running them and the people who are going. So it was really interesting. But yeah, it sounded cool.
If anyone went, please let us know.
In July 1881, a man walked into a train station, pulled out a gun, and shot the President of the United States.James Garfield's assassination horrified the American people, and they wanted his killer, Charles Guiteau, punished.
But Guiteau, many experts believed, was insane. What had seemed like a black and white case was now much grayer.Could the justice system truly deliver justice in a situation like this?Guiteau's trial was extraordinary, but not unique.
Important trials have always raised questions and made us reflect on the world we live in.I'm Mira Hayward, and I'm exploring the stories of these trials in my new podcast, History on Trial.
Every episode will cover a different trial from American history and reveal how the legal battles of the past have shaped our present.

Also like when you're thinking about if you're a listener, there's just so many things that Halloween like checks my boxes.Horror movies, obviously. And I do want to come back because I've seen a lot of new ones I've never seen before.
And of course, I've got thoughts about them. But I was doing kind of a run through of some of my classics. And I feel a lot of my classics are about sisterhood, whether you're related or not.
It's like sisterhood and friendship between women or competition between women, but like usually It's some kind of women coming together element. And we've talked about witches so much and like the history of that and what it represents.
But I did notice that when I was watching a lot of them in a row.I was like, oh, sisters.Yeah, sisters.Yeah.Which I do.I do really, really love. Yeah, I'll have to come back and talk about some of the new things I've seen.Yeah.
Costumes, obviously another box to check off for me.I love wearing costumes. And when I was growing up, I felt like this was probably the only time of year where everyone did it and it was cool. And when you get older,
And they're not always Halloween parties you wanna go to, because they can be a little, like... fraternity feeling or I don't know, like college feeling and that's not what I want.
But like, that's why one of the reasons I love conventions like Dragon Con is I get to wear a costume. So I feel like that makes sense that I would really love that. And I love seeing all the different costumes people make.
I love seeing the creative stuff kids make.Sometimes it doesn't make any sense and I love it when they explain it to me and I'm like, it's so creative and I don't get it, but I love it. And like I said, I do really like, like the lights of it.
I'm a big light person.I know that sounds weird, but I love like Christmas lights.I love Jack-o'-lantern light.I just love those kind of, something my brain likes that. But also it feels
It does feel very specific because the leaves are changing, you get your pumpkin, get your apples, you get your goofy food, you listen to silly songs, and there aren't that many Halloween songs.I like how it feels old and weird.
Like, it feels bizarre, so many parts of it.And when you know the history of it, it's strange that we still like bob for apples or knock on people's doors in costumes and ask for candy.
It's just thinking about the history of how that goes back to BCE.We're still doing it.And yes, we've made it really modern and made it very commercialized.
But it's just really interesting to me when I'm carving out my pumpkin and making a scary face in it.This feels pretty metal. Like, this is strange, but I like it.
It's also, it feels to me, it's like the last holiday in a string of holidays that I've mostly made my own.Like, Thanksgiving is a mess, Christmas is so intense, New Year's we've talked about before, and then Valentine's Day, oh my goodness.
But Halloween, It feels kind of like a funnier, darker, weirder Christmas to me.It doesn't have the same weight. If I don't do anything, that's fine.Like, I'll watch my horror movies and have my lights.
Even if I don't carve my pumpkin, which I might not, because... I got a lot going on.But I have a pumpkin.I don't know if I'll carve it.But I have pumpkin lights, nonetheless. It just feels... like something more mine, I guess.
And it doesn't feel as, it doesn't feel like I'm more obligated to anyone else to do something for it.Although, I mean, people know I love it.So I, and I say this with love, I do get invited to a lot of things.
So, you know, there is that, but it doesn't have the like high stakes of Christmas to me.And yeah, I just, I really enjoy it.I really, really, really like it.It feels like the last breath before all of this other stuff happens.
And I get to do a bunch of things that I personally really like. But it's a shifting. It's a shifting of seasons. That's part of the reason why Halloween exists.
So, I hope everyone listening, whether you celebrate Halloween or not, you're doing well, because it is a stressful time.
And if you have any traditions you would like to share, any recipes, I do love like a good goofy Halloween recipe, or any horror movies, always, always, always,
or books, because again, you can check out Killer Cocktails, the Criminalia book, really good.
And it's also been interesting because I feel like you and I are the opposite sides of a spectrum in terms of holidays, where you're always trying to like, make these traditions. And I'm always like, trapped in my tradition sometimes.
So this year I've been pretty good about, you know what, that movie doesn't do it for me anymore.I don't have to watch it.It used to be my tradition and now don't need to.So I feel like I've made some good steps.I like it.Yeah.
Yeah.Yeah.Decluttering your traditions.I do need to declutter my traditions.Sounds like you're doing it.
Yeah, but I still keep the ones that I really like. So yeah, I would love to hear from you listeners.Happy Halloween or just happy day, whatever you're doing.Happy last October.Happy last day of October.
