Hey, you guys, how are you doing today?Great. How are you?Absolutely fantastic.
I got to tell you right here from the very beginning, I'm going to put you in a time capsule and we're going to go back to my younger years because I didn't have Greek mythology like this.
Okay. All right.I love this.I love time capsules. We're all about this.
Because you make it so fun and you know, it's the kind of fun that you remember and it creates conversations outside of your family circle.
Oh, man, thank you so much for saying that.I mean, that's kind of what we really want to do.I mean, you know, Gillian and I are father and daughter, so it starts with storytelling and conversation that we have together.
But the idea that we can tell a story and then a kid can read the story or listen to the podcast and then they own it and they try to retell it to a friend or to a parent, that's what really gets me excited about what we do.I love that.
I want to see how many young adults are going to grab this story, Three Scary Old Ladies and a Dirty Eyeball. That had my attention right from the beginning.
That's one of my favorites. It's a good hook. It's a good hook. That was all Jillian, yes.
Well, let's talk about that title, because I've been one of those people that has been afraid to title things in my books, and the reason why is because I think people judge a book by its title.
that yet well i think that i mean it's not on the story is about i have a really deep and one day i bought uh... but yeah i love the story because it uh... center around her fear who is that famous hero that ultimately killed uh... that gorgon medusa cut off her head uh... but in order to do that he had to figure out where medusa is and
He hears that Medusa's three older sisters, the three old ladies, live in this isolated island in a cave and they're They are in the possession of one eyeball between the three of them.
And they also have one tooth. And the illustrator, Javier Esbilla, really brings these old ladies to life.
But it was so fun to write because it's just a lot of humor about them fighting over the eyeball and needing their tooth to eat and things like that. But yeah, Perseus ends up tricking them.
by stealing the eyeball, their precious eyeball, in order to find the location of Medusa. So it's a fun story.
And for the titles, we're always trying to find a way to make the editors laugh. We had two editors that worked on this book. They were both named Kate or Katie. So if they liked it and they laughed, they're like, OK, that's going in.
But we went past the line a few times and had to have more normal titles.
You know you bring up Medusa and here's the thing right away I'm taken back to that childhood I had and it was all black and white movies that would take Medusa and make her scary and and it was evil but I never got it in the colorful way that you guys have with the illustration and with the fun loving way of writing.
Yes, yes.I mean, Javier, the art illustrator at Spia, he does such a great job with these illustrations.
And it really, I think it must be really cool for people like you that have heard of these characters and have an image in your mind and then seeing it, you know, come to life in color in a fun way.
It, you know, he really does a great job of taking these characters, especially these famous ones like Medusa and just portraying it in a different way, in a different light.
And there's a lot I can say about Medusa, but I like Javier's interpretation of her.
There's a lot to be done. You can really take these artists, these characters, and it's hard to make something so intense, cool, and fun at the same time. And that, I think, is the genius of our illustrator, Javier. He did a great job.
So I was very shocked and surprised to see that the world's most perfect animal, really?I didn't know this.
Well, that's one of my favorite stories that Gillian wrote.
Heroes and Olympians, this second book, we do a deeper dive into the characters and the gods, and each story focuses around one god or one hero trying to get through something, and in this case,
Poseidon is trying to impress a girl, another goddess, Demeter. And he's trying to create an animal that she will love. And I didn't realize that Poseidon is actually the god that created the horse.
Even as much of a mythology nerd as I was, I somehow missed this critical piece of information. It's a really great story about him trying to impress her and coming up with all of these other animals along the way.
It might be my favorite story in the new book.
How come I've never heard of Tantalus?
I don't know.Tantalizing is a word we all use.Tantalus is where it comes from. But yeah, he, uh, yeah.Never disrespect the gods. It's a bad idea.If you have to go to Olympus for dinner, it's a bad idea to volunteer to cook in general.
I just think you're putting yourself out there.Don't cook for the gods.
It doesn't end well.Yeah.We don't want to give it away, but he insults the gods and he gets a pretty, uh, pretty bad punishment as a result.Really bad.
If Hercules were here today, what would his fashion be and what kind of music would he be listening to?
Heracles, well, yeah, Heracles, that's the Greek way to call it.Geez, I'll let you do the music.I think he would probably be like a tracksuit guy.I think soft pants would be key for Heracles. He's not gonna wear heavy jeans.
He's always gonna wanna be able to move around and be comfortable.Maybe those joggers that look like khakis but aren't.I could see Heracles rockin' some of those.
Have I seen him listen to some cheesy 80s music?Yeah, like some,
I want listeners to understand that the fun that we're having here today is exactly what you guys also do on your podcast, that this is something they can pop on while they're in the car, while they're at home or in the office, and it's not just for kids.
I mean, I'm entertained by your podcast.
Thank you.It is so much fun to do.The ultimate compliment, especially. We're both parents. We try to cater. We know the parents are listening to the kids' stuff, so we try to slide some humor, some adult jokes in there for them as well. That means a lot.
And you even get kind of serious in the book in the way that I didn't even know this even took place. The pirates kidnapping a god?How is that possible?
Yeah, well, and who does that?Dionysus, this is another god that I don't think there are enough stories about. He might be my favorite god, and he was one of the most popular deities in ancient Greece, because he was like the
the olympian of the people you know i mean he really liked hanging out with humans that's like like he would like his hobby so much so that he would transform into a human and that's why they thought he was just a random dude well they thought he was a prince that's why they they kidnapped him
but didn't realize he was a god. They did, they did shortly thereafter, but not when they picked him up.
Yeah, never cook for the gods, never choose that for the gods. You're just keeping track, Errol, these are your two tips.
You also bring some realism to the book in the way of showing us the ancient architecture.I always love this kind of stuff because it sets my imagination free.
Yeah, I mean, that's what's great about National Geographic, right?I mean, they have the access to all of this expert content that they can help us with.
We have experts that do curriculum consulting for the podcast and for the stories, but they also help us do all this research and fact-check our research about things that actually happened in the world in which these stories were being told.
And I think that really helps kids put the stories in context, but also brings a little dose of, okay, that was pretend, this is real to the reading.
Wow.Where can people go to find out more about everything that you guys are doing?
Well, Greeking Out, the podcast, season 11 is on the way.You can find it wherever you get your favorite flavor of podcasts right now, but yeah, stay tuned to National Geographic Kids for more information about season 11. coming very soon.
And then of course the books are available wherever you get your book.Yeah.
I love it.Please come back to this show anytime in the future. The door is going to be open for the two of you guys. You're the man, Arrow.Thank you so much.Be brilliant today, okay? You too.
