It's a bright, bold color, like that teal going on. Yeah.Uh, it's one of those trucks that like, if it was going down the road, it would immediately like, you would just like break your neck.Just trying to look at it passing by.
This isn't a, like, if I saw that color, I probably wouldn't pick it.But now that I see it on a truck with that set up, it is, it stands out.
Very unique.Yeah.Very cool picture.I love, I always loved the harvest pictures out in the field, like doing, doing work.Yeah.North Carolina.So we had a really cool pick.
You said he was the son of Adam Beeson.Yep.And the grandson to who? Okay, I thought you were gonna start talking some kind of lineage.He's a descendant of so-and-so, but cool.Well, thank you for this truck picture.

And one of the companies, Earl Martin, they had a truck similar to this, the same color.But yeah, this last week, as I always do, got to travel the countryside.
I was in 717 area, which is now known, I didn't realize this, but known for their sharp rigs like this.A lot of really customized show trucks, but I'll have Garrett throw some of these pictures up.
But man, probably visited six or seven accounts, but Earl Martin, we did a video shoot with them. which will probably air by the end of this year.Joe's got them pretty stacked up, but really excited about that one.
Randy Martin with Peachy Transport, they came to our conference last year, but went to go visit them and their transload facility, which was really cool.
Bruce Garman went to his farm and got to see what they're doing and then ended it with Ryan Garber, GFI Transport.But I have to say this, and I just want to put a plug, that area, number one, I was just overwhelmed with the
generosity and hospitality of the people.These farms up there were immaculate.Every truck you saw, there was just, it was blatantly, obviously like this area, like just the, the rigs up there were super cool.
And I didn't realize it, but like people are known for like, like they know they call them 717 trucks that they know that they're very cool.So I just wanted to kind of plug that on there.
But, uh, those videos will be coming out towards the end of the year.Really excited for you to get ahold of that.Speaking of though, I love this traveling.I get so filled up when I'm out there meeting these people and learning more about them.

Perfect.So speaking of Pennsylvania when we were up there a lot of these companies talked about that They haul a lot for Lackawanna products and today's podcast.
I'm gonna bring Randy Hobbs on with Lackawanna products Randy was Really one of our very first shipper posters and posted a lot in the very beginning which really helped us get on the map for a posting board.
And, you know, with load boards, it takes loads and it takes trucks and it takes, you gotta get loads posted so trucks can get on there.
And I can always remember Randy Hobbs as one of the first ones to really use the site, really post a lot of loads out there to really get us going.So, oh, a lot of gratitude to him for doing that.
But Randy, when I was up there at the Barnhart and went and visited Randy and then later on asked him, I was like, I got to get you on the show.He finally agreed.
But yeah, Randy Hobbs, longtime veteran in the industry, man, he's been with Lackawanna really since the beginning, three decades and has seen the company grow from a couple employees to now I think close over 80 employees.
but wanted to just showcase that.We know a lot of our listeners, they know Lackawanna or have hauled for them.They haul all over the place.
They have a big presence throughout the Eastern side, but even in Midwest, and I think even now branching into the West and even Canada.So a lot of people know them just from all the places they move, and we want to share them with you.
So with that said, here is my conversation with Randy Hobbs of Lackawanna Products. Randy, thanks for joining us.
Yeah.Well, I had the pleasure to visit you all, I think last month and, uh, man was just excited to finally, after 13 years, meet you and shake your hand.
And, uh, you graciously showed us around the office and, uh, got to experience beef on WEC for the first time and true Buffalo wings.Um, so, man, thank you so much.Uh, first and foremost for the hospitality up there.
Hey, you know what, you guys help us out immensely with our company.So it's a showing the gracious style right back to you.
Yeah.Well, going back to the beginning, you guys really were one of the first ones to really help us launch bulk loads, um, by being a contributor on the shipping side, posting loads to really create that ecosystem.
But I really want to talk about, um, Lackawanna products and you're all's company just from the beginning.You've been there.How many years now?
I just turned from 9-9-91.It was 33 years, September 9th.I actually started off working in accounting in our department, and things just changed where I ended up working in traffic after that.
We were a company in a lot smaller building where I started, and we have grown about three times in size since I started in 91. Our company started back around 82 and we have been growing ever since.
Right now we have over 90 people employed with our company.
It was interesting because you know we deal with
commodity shipping companies, trading companies all over the country and just the different commodities you trade, but you all had a wall and we're going to throw this picture up for our viewers to see, but just of all the different commodities that you all trade.
But yeah, talk about that.Just, you don't have to list all the ones, but man, you guys are really dabbling in all different types of specialty grains and commodities, but talk about some of those.
Well, we do get a lot into the organics.We've also have diversify where we'll even work on feed grade fertilizers as well, where some of these animal byproduct customers will use that stuff. So they do trade that stuff into them from time to time.
You know, we get into the basics through wheat mids and the soil pellets and, you know, your regular grains.But there is such a diversity of different commodities that we get into that, you know, is all feed related.
And we've even moved sand products as well.You know, anything that's non-hazardous that leads to more opportunities where our traders can prosper and also keep the trucks moving.
Yeah.And what I thought was interesting because the company Lackawanna, your office now is in Buffalo, right?Clarence, New York.Or Clarence, New York.I'm sorry.But you all have an actual mill in Lackawanna, right?
We actually have a storage facility in Eden, New York.
So and that's where we store like we'll bring in rail cars at different commodities.And then we ship like corn gluten meal out of there.And we have blood meal in the past have done that as well.
You know, just any commodities we bring in their distillers.We've done that before in the past.You know, it's our rail site facility has been there as long as I've been with Lackawanna. And, you know, just moving.
We move a lot of the product up in the northeast with that transfer location.But we also have transfer locations all around the country as well.
Talk about, because again, you've been there really since its humble beginnings and businesses and companies, they don't just naturally grow.There's got to be intentionality and steps along the way.
But what, man, if you can kind of really think back, what's led to some of that growth or changes over the years to really where you guys are today?Because you showed me around.
I mean, you guys have how many traders now that are trading different commodities?
I would say between our U.S.location, which you were a part of and we went through, and we also have a Canadian trading company as well, I would say probably at least 20 traders.
I would say about that, and we're consistently always trying to grow, whether it's in that aspect of our company or in another department, such as logistics.
And logistics is a branch of our trading that we started off doing logistics for customers probably back in the mid-90s.
So really what, I mean, if you kind of sum it up, like what led to all that growth?I mean, the expansion of the company, the expansion of the logistics company.
I mean, who really had that growth mindset to get you guys where you guys are moving thousands of truckloads now every year?
We established a lot of personnel who have, a lot of them had retired, but were the backbone of Lackawanna Products.
And it starts with our boss, Tony Murchie, and he was bringing in some people from Pillsbury and brought in some people from the railroad with great experience.
We had a couple Canadian guys that were in our office as well that we were able to trade internationally very frequently. I had very great knowledge about that.We live and learn from that.
My mentor, Pete Halos, is who I learned a lot of the commodities end and also logistics as time went on.And he taught me immensely to where I am today.
And so that is a lot of strong growth that we have, you know, continually want to grow on from where them people started this company and help grow it to where it is today.

Thank you very much, God bless. That's awesome.The logistics piece, Lackawanna Logistics, I mean, that's really just grown in the past, what, 10 years, I believe?Yes, yes.
We have, you know, we started out, of course, smaller just like anybody else, but we saw an opportunity for growth in that department
whether it was bulk commodities or we established starting moving palletized, which of course you have flat loads with your other business there.And we just saw a growth of that business right there that has expanded.
And what helps is a lot of our bulk customers that we haul for, we do palletize for as well.So that has helped very diversify our structure and moving commodities and loads all the time.
And cause you took me down just to your team, uh, the logistics piece.And yeah, I mean, you guys have quite a few, and I was going to say just ballpark, I mean, eight to 10 people that are just on the logistics side, right.
That are handling the transportation of your own commodities, but then also brokering those loads for your customers as well.
Well, in our logistics division, which is separate from the trading side, our logistics division, we build a lot of customers, but we also interact next door with the feed side as well on a daily basis.
And we have between our Canadian office and logistics department that's here in the US, we have now 19 people in our department. separate from the trading side of the commodities.And, you know, our boss wants us to keep growing.
And in this type of, you know, business and type of year you run into with inflation and everything else and companies, you know, downsizing and, you know, just economics in general, you know, that's a big plus.
Randy, if you don't mind sharing, talk about, um, really how, cause again, I look at you with a lot of wisdom now over the last, you know, um, years that you've been involved in the trading industry, but like talk about how it's really changed, but even.
um, how you all have utilized technology.And, uh, uh, I'm going to give a selfish plug.
I loved how much you were, you know, we walked around your office and, and all the logistics professionals, but even the traders, a lot of them, you pointed like, Hey, look, they got bulk loads up right now.
They're using it and they're using it and they're using it.But like talk about how you've used, you know, technology in general, but even bulk loads, um, to, to help grow your business.Okay.
Bulk loads has been a boon to our business.It has opened us up to so many more carriers out there that have never heard of our company that, you know, have never heard of us.
And it still happens to this day because you always have new signups almost every day from different parts of the country.You know, and they don't know about us.
You know, you might get somebody that lives all the way out in Texas that's never heard of us before. or California or somewhere like that.But we do trade commodities, you know, that far out.
You know, we do have our stronger suits where we're strong in certain parts of the country, but, you know, I mean, all depends on how the market works with trading the commodities going from point A to point B. Yeah.
You, um, You guys are always looking for opportunities, always looking to grow.Talk about just for some of our listeners on this podcast that maybe have heard of y'all, maybe not had heard of y'all.
Were you guys constantly moving regions of freight that people might be interested to know that could reach out to you?Were you guys strong, always looking for trucks to move y'all's commodities?
Um, I would say if I on a strong suit, even though we do trade 48 states, like I did mention that here a little bit ago, you were strong in the Midwest and East Coast for sure.
Uh, you know, we just a lot of the market, just the way the trading goes on.Um, you know, we trade a lot of stuff from the south from the north down to the south and we go from the west to the east.
You know, we have a lot of customers, say, in Pennsylvania, North Carolina.We're starting to grow down in the southeast more and more.
We have a salvage facility down all the way in Louisiana, where we have grown on that over the years, which is great.You know, that's part of our rail division. And, you know, I mean, it gets your various areas where we used to be.And we still do.
We do trade some stuff up in the upper Midwest, you know, Dakotas.And we're very strong out in Western Canada.One of our senior, our most senior trader,
who used to be a Buffalo Sabre back in the day, has really put a stronghold on the Western Canadian market.
And without his wisdom and his smarts and the background of being in the farming business before, without him, he has just been very essential and people look up to him as the senior trader with a lot of experience and expertise.
I know this just from seeing your postings on there, but a lot of the freight that you guys post and move, obviously hopper bottom freight, but you guys utilize all different types of bulk types of equipment with the commodities.
Talk about just that, like what types of equipment that you guys are looking for or all the types of equipment that you all handle through the commodities that you all trade.
Well, for instance, with the bulk, predominantly you have your dumps.And a lot of times I always ask, with the coal chutes on it because that's essential for a lot of customers.They need them for unloading into their systems.
And a lot of people don't always ask that question because they just take it for granted that these trucks always have it.
Then, of course, your hopper bottoms, which, you know, they're running all over the place, but, you know, always in the Midwest is very strong about that.Walking floors and belt trailers, which is similar to walking floors, but it's, um,
a little bit smaller in diameter than a walk-in floor we use.We do a little bit of tanker work, you know, not on the strong side on that, but we do have dabbled that in the past.And then, you know, we do use, you know, a palletized side.
You got your bands, you got your flatbeds and conestogas.And we've done some hot shots or LTL moves as well, periodically come up. just any opportunity that we can use the right equipment on.
Yeah.Nice.Um, talk about, especially we kind of right now, kind of what's going on in a harvest and all that.I would say that you guys probably are moving quite a bit of freight this time of the year, fall time of the year.
Yep.Yep.Um, typically your September through December tends to be our strongest time of the season for moving commodities with the way the, um, markets are and people are harvesting and ginning, you know, with new stuff and trying to move it.
And, you know, but also on the other end, it becomes very difficult to get trucking done.And that's the time when sometimes you might see escalating rates go up. And it's a case-by-case situation.
We always talk about that internally as well, where there's times you do have to pay up on the freight rates, you know, because of the need of the customer.
But the markets have changed so much with the commodities that something you might have seen that was moving greatly last year might not be moving this year, you know, and it's just
you know, especially like in the farmers, they don't, they use different commodities that change all the time.One year they might use cottonseed, the next year they might use soybean meal instead or a different type of filler.
Yeah, yeah.Going back to Lackawanna products, your logistics group, what really separates you guys?Cause you guys move a lot of freight.It seems like, I mean, you guys are always dabbling, looking for those opportunities.
What, what would you say are key characteristics that separate you all apart really from other businesses out there that are doing the same thing?Cause man, it seems like a lot of people gravitate to haul for you all.
Um, you guys are, you're onboarding different carriers all the time, but what are those key factors that you all provide that really can differentiate you all from, from others out there in the industry?
Well, I think the team aspect is huge.Communications, you know, you have your traders that are always continually working together to, you know, put the best trades together, but also coordinating with their freight coordinators.
And it goes all the way down to the service assistants and, you know, trying to consistently and not being complacent. In this business, if you get complacent, you're not going anywhere.You got to always have an aggressive mind.
Because some people like to just go through the motions and then you end up, that opportunity might go by the wayside and somebody else is going to move it.And it's a lost opportunity for Lackawanna Products or LPC Logistics.
And then there's times when we can potentially tie loads in from one place to the next.And that happens all the time where you keep a truck moving. And I was always a big proponent of doing that.
Yeah.I've noticed like now you're, you're leading now a team of other logistics professionals working with traders and all that.But what I love about it, you're still very hands-on.
I mean, you, you work in the bullpen with the other, uh, other logistics professionals.It seems like you really have a pulse on the market, but I really admired that.
But I think that some, sometimes maybe as companies grow, people kind of move up the hierarchy, but like, I guess. you really keep an eye on what's going on on a daily basis.
I mean, still talking with clients, still booking loads, working with vendors, shipping companies and all that.Why is that?
I just always like to keep a hands-on approach with what's currently moving, what I'm competing against.
I always send out a diesel price report every week to everybody to let them know what the market's doing and how the truckers are adapting to the fuel prices and the freight rates.I always want to know how things are going within our department.
and, you know, seeing how freight rates are continuously and how, you know, trucking reliability is and customers, you know, trying to keep our business up there.
I always tell them, let's see what we did from years past and see if we don't lose this business or find out why what's going on.
Yeah, that's really good.Well, yeah, I just kind of have a few last kind of questions just to kind of end this conversation.But yeah, this has been really insightful.
And I think this has been, again, really more hands-on approach talking with you and kind of how you all run the business and really showing you to our clients.
But talk about where do you see Lackawanna here in the next five, 10 years as far as growth goes?
Our boss continuously wants us to grow in the right aggressive manner.We want workers, we want people that are going to contribute.
We're starting to run into a few people, and I'm sure you see this yourself, where they start getting into that retirement talk at times.But we want to go from 90 people to 110 people.
you know, we want to keep the seats filled and we want to do that smartly.And, you know, we're constantly interviewing people trying to, you know, get keep the right mix in with our company.
Yeah, that's awesome.Well, Randy, man, I can't thank you enough for, uh, being just a long-term supporter of bulk loads.
Uh, I remember just when it was just myself in the office, uh, having one-on-one conversations with you, you've given us a lot of insight and advice on ways that we can make our service better.
So I love how we've kind of grown together over the years.
Yeah, you and I have a lot of that going on together.
Yeah, yeah, I can just always remember, yeah.
Yeah, we're having great conversations and I can tell that your heart and passion is for this industry and all the professionals in it, whether it's shipping companies, of course, our carrier members as well.
And I think you've always had the best intentions of really making sure that it's a win-win opportunity.So man, thank you so much always for your support and wisdom and growing with us on Bulk Loads.Really appreciate it.

Tyler, the one thing about Randy after meeting him in person and then shooting this podcast, this guy is mission focused for the company.Yeah.
And you can hear it in, I mean, the way he talks, the way he breathes it, but obviously he's been with that company for a long time, but man, he has put his heart and soul into building this company.
Yeah.And I think that he's going to continue doing that.Um, he loves it until he gets out of, yeah.
And you can tell that in the podcast, um, and he's been there for so long, but yeah, one of the things that you guys are talking about that was cool, a couple of things, um, just how diverse they are in their commodity trading, um, and, and everything.
And that's what I keep hearing more and more as you go and visit these companies.And something that we always talk about is the guys that are experiencing that massive growth.It's because, you know, they're getting diverse and they're thinking, you
outside the box and they're they're really diversifying their company.You know maybe opening carriers are opening up brokerages or you know like Lackawanna is opening up a logistics division that they've had going.
So really just diversifying yourself in that.
I've been telling you about some of these crazy ideas, names that I've had, but the more I go on these visits, the more I take a deeper dive learning about these companies, I realize it's more than just hauling bulk.
And there's just so many other ways to build a business and be diversified.We do that at Bulk Loads.I mean, we have five different companies that we run.
Again, it's to serve the needs of our customers, but it's also to diversify ourselves out in the market spot because you don't know when something may happen or something may be slower and something may be busier.
but it's an encouragement to see that they're doing this.And again, every company that I see, the ones that are successful.
And again, we said it earlier, but some of these company visits you're going to see, and I want you to watch, I mean, Barnhart was one of them.
We got another one coming out here soon with, uh, uh, the Idaho potato harvest, but these companies that are crushing it, they're doing more than just the hauling.
And I think it's an encouragement for me and for you out there that the opportunities are out there.You just gotta keep an open eye on where they might lie.
Yeah.And I think that's going to be not to, not to jump too, too into it.
Uh, but I think that's going to be a common theme at our conference in 2025 is we're going to really touch and dive into a lot of that about teaching these guys, Hey, if you want to grow, you know, some guys don't want to grow.
They're happy where they are, but if you really want to grow and go get to the next level, how can you diversify your operation?
Whether it's, you know, adapting to different kind of trailers and general freight whenever bulk slows down or, you know, taking on a whole nother operation like a truck wash or something like that.
Yeah.Ryan Garber, when we were up there just last week, they had these big poultry houses and they took the poultry houses and convert them into RV storage and it's taken off.
Again, nothing bulk related whatsoever, but they saw an opportunity there within a couple hours of the Bay Area up there.And now those storage spaces are just chock full of RVs and all that.So just, yeah, one idea.
It just made me think of that top of the head.So man, the opportunities are out there.You said it, but bulk freight conference 2025 is coming up.We're going to be talking about that so much more.You don't want to miss it.
Ryan Garber told me he's already got his tickets and some others out there.So we want to see you there.
This thing will sell out and are not saying that to get you to buy the tickets right now, but get the tickets plan right now because this thing is getting a lot of momentum and this thing will sell out fast.We want you there.
